biodiversity

• Biodiversity refers to the variety of life. It is seen in the number of species in an ecosystem or on the entire Earth. Biodiversity gets used as a measure of the health of biological systems, and to see if there is a danger that too many species become extinct.

• It is an essential component of nature and it ensures the survival of human species by providing food, fuel, shelter, medicines and other resources to mankind.

• The richness of biodiversity depends on the climatic conditions and area of the region. All species of plants taken together are known as flora and about 70,000 species of plants are known till date. All species of animals taken together are known as fauna which includes birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, insects, crustaceans, molluscs, etc.

After floodBecause of the historic rain on the month

December there was a big threat to the lake .As

there was continuous rain the level of water was

raising alarmingly.

(1)Finally it led to an outflow of water unto the

city .This resulted in entry of water into the

houses and blockage of roads.

(2)This was due to the lack of proper height

risement of the lake.

During flood..overflow of water

from porur palke.

• Lakes opened, residential localities marooned

• Monday, 23 November 2015 Srinivasa N V

• Chennai: Due to continuous rainfall over the weekend, authorities have released water from four lakes near Chennai, leading to inundation of areas around it.

• Water was released from Chembarambakkam, Porur, Puzhal (picture) and Madurantakam lakes and officials have cautioned people living in low-lying areas. This could flood localities such as Porur, Moulivakkam, Bharaniputhur, Manapakkam, Mudichur, Perungalathur and Pammal.

• Kanchipuram Collector R Gajalakshmi said, "We have to discharge at least the inflow. We do not expect any major impact.“

• According to authorities, nearly 12,000 people have already been evacuated from low-lying areas and have been given shelter in marriage halls and schools.

• After the Porur lake was opened, Moulivakkam, Bharaniputhur and Telliagaram were the first to get flooded. As water levels rose, low-lying areas in Mugalivakkam, Manapakkam and Kolapakkam started to go under a sheet water. An earth-mover was to be used to create a canal in Moulivakkam for the water to flow out.

• Residents of Moulivakkam have expressed anguish. "We have to wade through knee deep water and it is getting worse with more rainfall forecast," said Ramesh. Some even took to social media to express their displeasure with one saying, "Even though the rains have reduced, I have to wade through knee deep water on a bright Monday morning."
