There are many pet food diets to choose from but I have found that “grain-free” diets keep our pets the

healthiest. By reducing the amount of carbohydrates (especially simple carbohydrates like wheat and corn) pets have less issues with weight gain, allergies, and maintain a better overall health status. Most pets (even people) LOVE the taste of grains. Who doesn’t love pasta and bread? But unfortunately, though they taste good, they are not as good nutritionally as other complex carbohydrates like potatoes or peas. I recommend a good quality protein source, a complex carbohydrate source, many vege-tables, no preservatives (natural ones are ok) and no dyes. When you are selecting a brand make sure you read the la-bel and chose one that does NOT contain any grain (grains are wheat, corn, rice, barley, oatmeal, etc.) You may notice that grain free nutrition costs a little more than non-grain free. The reason for this is that there is much less

“filler” in the food and it is much more calorie dense so you will feed less. Typically, you will feed 1/3 less on grain free food than you do with grain diets. So by feeding less and spending a little more on the bag, you typically spend the same amount of money on the bag of food. In the long run, because pets become so much healthier on grain free food, you will have less medical issues and therefore save money in the long run by feeding grain free. If your pet has been eating a food that has the first ingredient as wheat or corn, they may not like grain free nutrition. Your pet may be addic-ted to the wheat and corn (much like we are to pastas, bread and Doritos! They taste good!) So it may take a couple of weeks to transition them to grain free nutrition. FOR CATS: I recommend feeding exclusively canned grain free food. This is optimal. Cats only drink when they are dehydrated so many cats are in a constant state of dehydra-tion if eating only dry food. Studies have shown that cats that eat wet food only have less urinary issues. Also, wet food helps fat cats lose weight-

Feeding wet food allows us to portion control cat’s food and by doing this we feed the proper amount and cats cannot overeat.

The study published in the journal Sleep Medicine also said that single and mar-ried people sleep better than

those who are widowed, separated or divorced. That being said, how do we make where we sleep a relaxing and enjoyable space? I asked two design experts for their tips, Bonnie Dewkett and Lisa Jensen. Bonnie Dewkett is the owner of The Joyful Company, based in Connecticut. She’s also an organizing expert, author, motivational speaker, and Internet radio personality. Her company tackles topics such as family and personal time ma-nagement, work/life balance, stress reduction, child study skills, and room-by-room home organization. Dewkett travels to customers to help organize their homes. She also works with them via email, phone or Skype.

POSITIVE MOMS | 8

Here are Bonnie’s bedroom tips:

1.  Set a timer for 20 minutes at a time. Pick up clothing on the floor and hang it up or put it in the laundry.

2.  Presort laundry into darks, lights and delicates.  This gives you a head start on the laundry when sorting AND two smaller baskets are easier to hide and place in your bedroom than one large one.

3.   Use the back of the door to store shoes, accessories or even jewelry.  This keeps the items off the floor.

4.  Under bed totes are a great way to store lesser used or out of season items.  Get ones with rollers that are easy to move.  Add bed risers for ex-tra space.

5.  Add lights to the inside of your clo-set so you can easily see inside.  Often we don’t wear things just because we don’t see them.

6.  Add lamps to your room. The over head light is harsh and setting the mood can be done with small lamps or even candles.

7.  If you only keep one place clean in the bedroom go with the night table.  It’s the last thing you see before you go to sleep and the first thing you see in the morning.

By Lisa Estall

Last year a study from Cambridge University was published revealing that the average woman spends 8 hours 47 minutes in bed, 15 minutes more than the typical male. However women experience more broken sleep because of stresses and strains of managing the work/life balance.

Lisa Jensen of Lisa Jensen Interior Design in Newburyport, Ma Says: When I design bedrooms for my clients my goal is to minimize visual clutter in order to create a serene atmosphere. I often use a 3-drawer chest or a cabinet as a bedside table which will function to conceal common bedside items like tissues, magazines, reading glasses and sleep masks.»

She adds, «Another item that I gravitate toward when designing bedrooms is a storage bench or ottoman. These items have a dual function in that he client has a place to sit down to remove their shoes and they also have a place to hide extra mis-matched blankets inside.»

AL HAVE NUMEROUS ITEMS THAT WE USE ON A DAILY

BASIS WITHIN OUR BEDROOMS BUT IN ORDER TO CREATE

A CALM SPACE IT IS IMPORTANT TO FIND

WAYS TO MINIMIZE OUR CONSTANT VIEW

8.  Use Command hooks to store jewelry, scarves and belts on a wall or behind a door.

9.  If you want to refresh a space, paint it!  Use the paint from the returned pile at a home improvement store to save big bucks.

10.  Add an air freshener to your room or use essential oils.  This helps any space feel calmer.  Music can really make it special too.

«PUREWOW» A NIGHT OF EMPOWERING CONVERSATIONS...

CELEBRITY

By Lisa Estall

Last November, Bethenny Fran-kel, Alexandra Wilkis Wilson (Co-Founder of GILT and CEO of Glam Squad) and Dyllan McGee (Creator, MAKERS), participated in a panel discussion moderated by Mary Kate McGrath, Editor In Chief of Purewow.com. The ladies discussed successes, failures and pivotal moments throughout their careers. The panel discussion was part of a partnership event between Fidelity and PureWow entitled “A Night of Empowering Conversa-tions.”  I interviewed Mary Kate McGrath, Editor In Chief of PureWow, after the event. Find out what she (and Bethenny Frankel) had to say. Why did you choose Bethenny Frankel, Alexandra Wilkis Wilson and Dyllan McGee to speak on the panel? Have you met the ladies before?

More...PureWow is a digital publication dedicated to finding ways to make your life more interesting, beautiful, and mana-geable. Their motto, «Elevate the Every-day,» drives them to deliver irresistable discoveries to their readers every single day.

I’ve witnessed a lot of snoozy panels. What makes for a lively discussion is a variety of voices. When creating a panel for a PureWow event, I like to start with one person and build from there. For our recent «Empowe-ring Conversations» event with Fi-delity Investments, I knew I wanted to have Dyllan McGee on the panel from the start. I attended her MA-KERS conference this past January in southern California and I was blown away by how passionate she was about, well, every issue a woman faces. She’s a total spitfire. So I knew she would be amazing to hear her speak about women and finances. Alexandra WIlkis Wilson is a dear friend of PureWow and re-markable in every way. I mean, she’s practically brilliant. I knew our au-dience of smart, in-the-know women would drool over Alexandra’s stories about starting Gilt Groupe and then GlamSquad. So, two down, one more. I knew we needed an outlier.

She’s a moderator’s dream. She’s outspoken. She’s funny. And she was perfect.

How do you get the articles for Pure Wow? Do you have writers across the country? PureWow publishes daily on PureWow.com and within our local editions in NYC, Chicago, San Francisco, LA and Dallas. What is the difference between PureWow and WowOWow? Com-pletely separate. We are fortunate that the WowOWow women are close advisors of ours. Joni Evans is my hero.

How often do you update PureWow? Daily? Yes!

You’re a mom, how many children do you have? Their ages? Jackson, 3. Charlie, 6 months.

What other cities will you be in-cluding on the site? We get readers asking us every day when we’ll come to their hometown. I can’t reveal where we will be going next, but I will say that Boston and Miami

are very boisterous in their clamo-ring for a local PureWow edition!

Wade says that one of the ways to burn off belly fat without feeling hungry is by making sure you’re eating healthy proteins such as plant based proteins (like lentils and soybeans), fish and white meat poultry. Unrefined whole grain carbohydrates also satisfy and keep you feeling full longer. Dairy also helps you shed body fat as it is rich in whey, a protein that helps boost the metabolism. The nutritionist adds that the key to losing weight isn’t in the foods that you avoid, it’s actually in the foods you start eating. She says, “That’s right…in order to fight belly fat you need to eat more!” But don’t just eat any more of any food. Wade adds, “You want to start increasing your intake of foods and nutrients that have been proven to shrink unsightly and unhealthy belly fat.”

HERE IS HER LIST OF 5 FOODS THAT CAN FLATTEN YOUR BELLYBlueberries: Already known for its powerful anti-in-flammatory properties, blueberries may have another surprising benefit- they can shrink belly fat! A study at the University of Michigan found that when rats were fed a diet containing blueberries consistently over a three month period, they showed a significant reduction

EAT MORE FOR FLATTER ABS. YES, EAT MORE!

It’s a new year and you, along with millions of others, want to trim down for 2015. Belly Fat Diet For Dummies author Erin Palinski-Wade has offered her advice on foods that can flatten your belly. in abdominal fat. And even better- triglyceride levels

dropped and insulin sensitivity increased meaning this delicious berry may also help to fight heart disease and type 2 diabetes! Clams: Clams are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids are not only strong anti-in-flammatory nutrients, but they also help to regulate stress hormones. When stress hormones such as cortisol are elevated in your body, it causes your body to store more fat- specifically belly fat. However, a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids can help prevent cortisol levels and other stress hormones from peaking, meaning less of these hormones are circulating in your body, and therefore you start to store less belly fat. Matlaw’s New England Style Stuffed Clams are a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, and the individual waist line friendly shell provides portion control. They even come in a variety of flavors including Bacon & Cheese (80 calories and only 1g of sat fat) and Chorizo (85 calories, 0g sat fat) so you can still enjoy flavors you love and keep your belly flat.  Grapefruit: A recent study found that when obese adults consumed half a grapefruit or four ounces of 100% grapefruit juice before three main meals, they experienced a significant decrease in both body weight and waist circumference. This may be due to the high water content of the grapefruit helping these individuals to feel satisfied, helping them reduce their portions of other foods. And one extra belly-fighting benefit of grapefruit- it contains diuretic properties helping you shed unwanted water weight which can bloat your belly.

LOW FAT COTTAGE CHEESEYou’ve probably heard that “milk does a body good” but did you know dairy products can also do your belly good? Diets rich in dairy have been shown to be effec-tive in reducing body fat, especially in the midsection. These findings may be in part due to calcium’s crucial role in regulating how fat is stored and broken down by the body. Dairy products are also rich in the amino acid arginine, which has been shown to help promote fat loss and increase muscle mass. Be sure to include some dairy in your diet daily- but make sure it’s the right kind such as Daisy Brand Cottage Cheese, a great source of protein with 13 grams per half cup, which keeps you full longer and helps keep away cravings for foods that may be less than belly friendly.

CINNAMONResearch has found that the active compound methyl-hydroxy chalcone polymer (MHCP) in cinnamon makes fat cells more receptive to insulin. When cells are more receptive to insulin, they allow the insulin to transport sugar into the cells for energy, thus keeping insulin levels in the bloodstream low. High insulin levels trigger the body to store more fat, especially in your midsection. So consuming a seasoning like McCormick Ground Cinnamon that helps maintain healthy levels of insulin is a great way to combat belly fat. Try sprinkling cinnamon on everything from oatmeal to apples, and even popcorn.

WADE SAYS:

« When it comes to shedding belly fat, it isn’t all in just what you eat either. When it comes to weight loss, a lifestyle change that is customized to you and your dietary habits is the key to success. Just as we all have different personalities, we also each have a unique weight loss personality. This is why a ‘one size fits all’ approach to weight loss just doesn’t work. Tailoring a plan to your lifestyle is necessary for both weight loss, and most importantly- weight maintenance following weight loss. Consult with a registered dietitian for a personalize weight loss plan that can work for you. This not only will help you to shed belly fat, but to keep it off for good.»

Pet HealthImmediately upon waking following the surgical experience, most dogs will once again be able to see. Seeing these patients run out and find their owners in the waiting room on discharge, one day after surgery is such a fantastic experience. Hearing the stories of older dogs acting like puppies again, or young dogs having boundless energy is supportive of how great a role vision plays in the life of a dog. Those stories are also what make the job of a veterinary ophthalmologist so rewarding.

CANINE CATARACTS:AMAZING TREATMENTS

Nick Cassotis, DVM, DACVODr. Cassotis graduated from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst in 1993. He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Michigan State University in 1998. Dr. Cassotis then completed his internship at North Carolina State University and his residency in comparative ophthalmology from Michigan State University. He passed his board certification examination and is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists.

Dr. Cassotis specializes in veterinary ophthalmology. The service offers a full complement of medical and surgical options for ocular and periocular disease. His main areas of interest include the medical and surgical management of corneal disease, cataracts, and glaucoma. The service as a whole is dedicated to understanding your pet’s disease process in order to offer potential treatments for preventing vision loss. Dr. Cassotis joined Port City Veterinary Referral Hospital in September 2008.

COD WITH COUSCOUS? Oh, yes! Check out this creative and yummy toddler-

approved recipe on page 18.

Although we often see our canine companions sniffing their way around the yard and house, they are in fact very dependent on their vision for confident navigation. Their dependence on vision becomes most evident sadly, when it is lost because of illness or trauma. The simple feeling of security derived from knowing who has entered the room, where their favorite toy is and whether another dog is a threat, is replaced by insecurity, uncertainty and fearfulness.

The causes of blindness are numerous and range from those that are reversible to those that are permanent. In the case of re-versible blindness, witnessing the happy wag of the tail and return of confidence when a dog’s sight has been returned is a wonder-ful experience. Diagnosing and treating diseases that affect vision is the job of the Ophthalmology Department here at Port City Veterinary Referral Hospital. One of the reversible vi-sion limiting diseases in dogs and cats is cataracts. Cataracts affect the intraocular lens of all species (dogs, cats, horses, humans, etc). To understand cataracts you need to know a little about the normal lens within the eye. The lens is a small, circular structure that sits behind the iris and focuses the light onto the retina. A healthy lens projects a sharply focused beam of light onto the retina that, in turn, produces clear and focused vision. The lens is a clear circular structure composed of an outer shell and an inner filling.

Fortunately cataracts can be removed to restore vision. This is a common surgery performed here at the Hospital. Keeping with the concept of an M&M candy, the surgery removes the filling of the lens and replaces it with an artificial lens implant. Although the concept is simple, the surgery itself requires a very specific fine skill set and knowledge of micro-surgical techniques. For dogs to undergo cataract surgery they must be anesthetized, unlike people who are commonly awake for their surgery. Once under anesthesia, they are moved to the operating room and positioned under an operating microscope. To access the lens which is deep within the eye and behind the iris, the surgeon must cut into the eye. A small 3mm incision is made through the cornea and into the fluid of the eye. Now the veteri-nary ophthalmologist has access to the lens. The front part of the shell is opened and a specialized technique called phacoemulsifi-cation is used to carefully remove the lens filling.

This technique leaves behind an empty lens shell/capsule. To correct vision back to normal, an artificial lens is injected into the eye and positioned within the capsule. Once positioned and secure, the surgeon sutures the incision closed. The canine patient is then moved to the ICU area where it recovers. Continued on next page.

Cont: PUREWOW Interview

Bethenny Frankel, who is now back on The Real Housewives of New York City, made the panel a very interesting one with her honest answers.

On what she looked like years ago:“I had a big Jew fro, bright red lipstick and I was tan as could be.  Did I think I would be sitting next to someone who speaks five languages? [referring to Alexandra Wilkis Wilson] All I do is drink alcohol!” “I studied psychology - you see how far that got me.”

About reaching goals:“I started with my cookie business.  I gave cookies to anyone and everyone, when I left someone’s house, when I was meeting up with people to get my name out there. No one knew if I was successful or not, but they knew…she's not lazy, this bitch is going.”

About the favorite part of her job:“No two days… no two hours are the same.”

On the Sheryl Sandberg book Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead and women in the workplace:“There’s so much conversation around the book, and the ceiling.  So many women are caught up in worrying about what men have. Be in your own lane, be the best. Housewives have helped in getting me where I am today. You see so much about other people and what other people are making, but just do your own thing.»

About mistakes:“Never assume anyone is smarter than you. You are only as smart as your client,

patient etc.  The idea is not the most important thing; the execution of the idea is the most important thing.”

About relationships with money:“Relationships with money could be a lot like your relationship with food, family…a lot of noise around it.”  “I still can’t believe I can buy some things sometimes.  I call my financial advisor all the time to ask if I can buy certain things and I’m like ‘I can buy a purse?!’”

About balance:“All we want is a good night sleep and then we can all feel like we have balance for one day.”  Frankel was also given quickfire ques-tions:

Have you cried at work?“I made my entire living on Bravo crying for 8 years.” You’re running down the street to a meeting, what song is playing in your head?"Girl On Fire, Alicia Keys"

How much money do you currently have in your wallet?"$48? $60 bucks?" You win an Academy Award, who do you thank?«Cookie, my business partner, Andy Cohen at Bravo» What are you reading right now?“I always have to finish what I start.  I’m reading some cheesy, weird kinda slutty romance novel I bought in a small town airport.”
