IET gives presentation at CapulaThe Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) delivered a presentation to a large audience of engineers

at Capula this week as the company moved to increase the number of Chartered and Incorporated Engineers

at the company.

The presentation concentrated specifically on the benefits of Professional Registration and how to achieve

it, but also covered the basics of membership and the networks, events and community structures that are

provided by the IET.

"Capula's reputation is largely built on the quality of our delivery, and as such we are developing closer links

with the IET by fostering and supporting a comprehensive programme towards achieving Professional

Registration status for a greater number of our staff," said HRManager Miles Kitchener, "Further to this, we're

PREFERRED BIDDER FOR HINKLEY POINT

A joint venture between Bouygues and Laing O'Rourke has

been selected by EDF Energy as the preferred bidder for the

contract for civil works to construct the planned new plant at

the existing Hinkley Point site in southwest England. A final

investment decision on the project has yet to be made.

EDF Energy announced that it had chosen a joint venture

between French construction group Bouygues and Laing

O'Rourke - the largest privately-owned construction

company in the UK - as the preferred bidder for the contract

to build the Hinkley Point C plant. A consortium between the

UK's Balfour Beatty and France's Vinci had also been vying

for the contract.

The contract - worth some £2.0 billion ($3.1 billion) -

includes the construction of the main civil works for the

nuclear island, the conventional island and supporting

structures. The work is subject to planning consent and EDF

Energy taking its final investment decision at the end of this

year.

AMBITIOUS ROSATOM LOOKS TO 'AMBITIOUS' UK

Russia's state atomic energy corporation Rosatom is

interested in entering the UK nuclear market and is

beginning preliminary work to do so, officials said at

AtomExpo.

A press conference at AtomExpo in Moscow on 5 June 2012

saw deputy head of Rosatom Kirill Komarov give a run-down

of the company's nuclear new build projects in its domestic

market as well as in India, Turkey and Vietnam. "Rosatom is

interested in nuclear programs everywhere in the world," he

said, "there is no country in which we will not be interested to

build a plant. We are quite ambitious in this respect."

"We are monitoring the development of the British

program closely and we will probably take part," said

Komarov. "Great Britain has the most ambitious program in

Europe and we are of course interested in this market as a

company that can provide the technology and also the funds...

but to progress we need to do a lot of preliminary work,

including licensing."

He said Rosatom was consulting various stakeholders

but it was "premature" to talk of it joining any of the UK's

current new build consortia, rejecting any link with EOn and

RWE's joint venture Horizon which is entering a sale process.

EU NUCLEAR SECURITY ON TRACK

A review of nuclear security across the European Union (EU)

has identified an extensive set of good practices and has

urged member states to continue their efforts and

co-operate both within the EU and further afield.

The EU's technical response to the Fukushima accident of

March 2011 took two tracks: The first tackled safety through

the program of stress tests performed on a plant-by-plant

basis; The second dealt with security in relation to "theft,

sabotage, unauthorised access, unauthorised movement of

nuclear material or other malicious act."

This was carried out by the Ad-Hoc Group on Nuclear

Security (AHGNS), whose report has now been published. It

is focused on methods for security evaluation, preventive

measures and protection of nuclear power plants with the aim

of sharing good practices and improving general security

principles.

CAPULA CONTROLS FOR IRONBRIDGE BIOMASS

Capula has been awarded a significant contract for a new

control system at E.ON’s Ironbridge power station.

In line with recent Government incentives for renewable

energy obligations, E.ON has taken the decision to convert

the power station’s two 500MW generating units to operate

through the co-firing of coal and wood pellets.

Capula has been engaged via the main contractor (AJS

Contracts Ltd, part of the Hargreaves Group of companies) to

provide the control system for the new fuel handling plant,

responsible for the following plant: rail receipt & unloading,

coal conveying, new & converted wood pellet material

conveyors, new fuel store and bunker filling conveyors.

CAPULA'S ACHILLES SCORES UP ON 2011

Capula has recorded excellent results in its annual Category

B2 Assessment by Achilles, outscoring last year’s figures in

the process.

Capula Chief Executive Roger Turner said: “Achieving this

accreditation from Achilles illustrates Capula’s commitment to

high standards in safety, health, environmental and quality

practices and procedures.”

CAPULA SUPPORT RENEWED BY RUGELEY

Capula is pleased to announce that International Power has

recently extended our support arrangements for Rugeley

power station until 2013. The support covers control desk

equipment for two units and the control desk for the flue gas

desulphurisation plant previously implemented by Capula.

As part of the agreement, Capula will provide 24/7/365

telephone support and will respond to site within four hours

if required. Rugeley power station will also have access to

skilled engineers for consultancy and enhancement works.

SCADA UPGRADE FOR DRAX POWER STATION

Capula has been contracted by Drax Power Limited (Drax) to

upgrade the control system of a key area of plant at the power

station to support their ongoing business strategy.

Upgrading the Materials Handling plant control room

SCADA will provide improved system performance.

Expansion of the system capacity will also allow Drax to take

advantage of additional client numbers, accommodating

increased demand on the SCADA.

CONTROL SOLUTION FOR THAMES WATER

Capula has been awarded a key contract to update the

control system at Thames Water's Ashford Water Treatment

Works. The site supplies clean water resource to several

hundred thousand customers across Thames Water’s

network.

Having identified a need to upgrade their site’s Power

Management System in line with an increase in site capacity,

Thames Water engaged Capula to replace the PLC & SCADA

hardware and control functions. Capula’s scope of work will

provide additional site monitoring, control and resilience, while

a nine-metre mosaic mimic panel will be installed for manual

control of the Generators and Circuit breakers.

CONDENSATE POLISHING PLANT REFURBISHMENT

Capula has been engaged by Scottish Power (part of the

Iberdrola Group) to carry out a contract for the refurbishment

and modernisation of the Condensate Polishing Plant on the

four 600MW generating units at Longannet power station.

The Condensate Polishing Plant is used to regenerate the

water used in the boiler cycle to minimise plant corrosion

which can happen as a result of chemical properties in the

demineralised water degrading over time.

Capula's scope of work will cover the complete

refurbishment of the control and instrumentation systems,

including the replacement of valves and orifice plates,

installation of new electrical actuators, modifications to plant

pipework and improvements to the plant drainage systems. In

addition, Capula will also carry out civil works, installation of

electrical cabling and network integration.
