MORAL VALUES

Page 2: Possible Question 2009

Loyalty

Paragraphs Contents Items 1 Based on the novel Prisoner of Zenda by

Anthony Hope, the moral values that I have learnt is loyalty.

Novel of your choice

The moral value2 Josef, the servant showed his loyalty to King

Rudolf Fifth by guarding him in the cellar with his life. Unfortunately, he died because he tried to protect the king from being kidnapped. Sapt and Fritz were also loyal to the king. They kept the king in the cellar to save him from Black Michael. They also found a perfect person to impersonate the real king to prevent Black Michael from taking the crown.

Reason 1 Evidence

3 Besides that, Rudolf Rassendyll was also loyal to his leadership. Before he went to Ruritania, he worked with Her Majesty, Queen Victoria. Nobody knew about it except Sapt and Fritz. The Famous Six were also loyal to their leaderships, Black Michael. Three of them followed Black Michael to Strelsau and the rest guarded the real king in Zenda.

Reason 2 Evidence

4 Lastly, Rudolf Rassendyll did not reveal the big secret of his impersonation of the king to another person until the end. We could see his loyalty on his friendship. He knew that if he revealed the secret to another person, Sapt and Fritz would be in danger. Sapt and Fritz too never betrayed the king’s secrets. They could do that but they did not want to.

Reason 3 Evidence

5 Briefly, loyalty is very important. This moral value was very good and meaningful to my life

Friendship

Paragraphs Contents Items 1 There are several moral values highlighted in

The Potato People by Angela Wright. In the novel, we can find value related to relationship. This is shown by Patrick and Marie.

Novel of your choice

2 First and foremost, it can be seen in the novel when Patrick shared bread with Marie. Through that event, Patrick knew that Marie was a gipsy girl. However, he was never afraid to befriend with her.

Reason 1 Evidence

3 Besides that, the author was trying to convey the friendship message through Marie’s action. What I meant is when Marie showed the big house that served many luxurious, delicious and appetizer food for the party. Since they did not find any food for three days, they ate the food to their heart’s content. This could be described as a friend in need is a friend indeed.

Reason 2 Evidence

4 Last but not least, Marie also taught Patrick how to protect themselves from the cannibals in the forest. Marie asked Patrick to pick the stick and protect himself from them. It showed that Marie was a sharing and intelligent girl. Besides that, Patrick also helped Marie to climb up the iron gate to enter the lighthouse. Although Marie was so strong, as a man, Patrick still helped Marie. They cooperated and helped each other for their own benefits.

Reason 3 Evidence

5 In a nutshell, we should have a good relationship and friendship with our friends in our daily life.

Courage

Paragraph Contents Items 1 Based on the novel Prisoner of Zenda by

Anthony Hope, I have learned the moral value, courage from several characters.

Novel of your choice

Moral value2 First and foremost, I had learned it from

Rassendyll. He was willing to take risk to save the king and the throne. Rassendyll met King Rudolf the Fifth in the jungle. Both of them were equally surprised at their physical resemblance. The king invited Rassendyll to wine and dines at the lodge. The king drank a bottle of wine from Black Michael. On the coronation morning, Sapt could not wake up the king. He was drugged by Black Michael. To prevent Black Michael from taking the king’s throne, Rassendyll willingly pretend as the king.

Reason 1 Evidence

3 The moral value of courage also showed when Rassendyll rode the horse alone. On the coronation, Rassendyll had to pass New Town and Old Town to go to the castle. The Old Town people loved Duke Michael to be the king. When he passed the old Town, he ordered his servants to not follow him too close. This showed that he had some courage to face the risk if the Old Town people attacked him.

Reason 2 Evidence

4 Lastly, Rassendyll fought against Duke Michael’s men in the forest. After the coronation, Rassendyll and Sapt left for Zenda. At the lodge, they found the old woman was missing and Josef died. The king was missing too. Soon, the saw a group of eight horsemen arriving at the lodge with spades to bury Josef and to hide the evidence of Duke Michael’s crime. To avenge Josef’s death, Rudolf and Sapt killed three of them before escaping.

Reason 3 Evidence

5 As conclusion, the moral value of courage can be seen through this novel as Rassendyll was willingly take risk to save the king and the throne, rode the horses alone and fought against Duke Michael’s man in the forest.

Trustworthy

Paragraphs Contents Items 1 I learnt the value of trustworthy from

various characters throughout the novel, Prisoner of Zenda by Anthony Hope Hawkins.

Novel of your choice

Moral value

2 Fritz von Tarlenheim is a good friend of Rudolf Rassendyll. That is why he is trust by Rassendyll and Princess Flavia to deliver their secret love messages. Fritz is also trust by his friend Sapt. When he is ask by Sapt to guard the King Rudolf’s room, he obeys. Fritz stays there until the next morning without changing his uniform

Reason 1 Evidence

3 Another character that can be greatly trust is Antoinette de Mauban, the French widow. After finding out she is telling the truth at the summer house, Rassendyll immedietly trusts Antoinette. He even tells her the king’s rescue plan and she is part of it. Though the plan shall ruin her beloved Duke Michael, Antoinette never says a word about it to the king’s brother. Besides that, at the end of the novel she sent a letter to Rudolf Rassendyll saying no one shall know about the Prisoner of Zenda. This proves Antoinette is of trustworthy material.

Reason 2 Evidence

4 Lastly, the most untrustworthy character in the novel is Rupert of Hentzau. At Tarlenheim Castle, he visits Rassendyll to tell him that his master, Duke Michael has offered a proposal. Rassendyll refuses the proposal which include a large sum of money. Rupert then offer to shake hands as friends. When Rassendyll refuses again by putting his hands behind his back, Rupert suddenly stab him with a dagger. Thankfully the injury is not serious.

Reason 3 Evidence

5 In a nut shell, the value of trustworthy is very much alive in the novel. It is an essential part of a friend and an impossible trait in an enemy.

A character that you would like to be

Paragraphs Contents Items 1 The novel I have chosen to write about is

Prisoner of Zenda by Anthony Hope. The character that l would like to be is Rudolf Rassendyll. These were because of a few reasons.

Novel of your choice

Character

2 First and foremost, Rudolf Rassendyll was an intelligent and handsome young man who went to Ruritania to see the Coronation in Strelsau. Before going there, he had entered the German University and he could speak many languages such as English, French, and German. Besides that, he was impersonating the real king to save the throne from Black Michael. He came up with good plans to save King Rudolf Fifth that was detained by Black Michael at Zenda’s Castle. These were enough to show that he was an intelligent and suitable person to impersonate the real king.

Reason 1 Evidence

3 Moreover, he was also a brave and good fighter. He rode alone in the Old Town during the Coronation ceremony to show that their king was a brave man. He also fought with Black Michael’s men in the forest and with the Famous Six in the castle.

Reason 2 Evidence

4 Lastly, Rudolf Rassendyll also showed his loyalty to his country by working with Her Majesty, Queen Victoria. Only Sapt and Fritz knew about it. He was loyal to the king. He did best so that people would not realise that he was not the real king. As an example, he signed the important papers even though he had a wounded hand. He also fought in his mission to save the king until he was injured.

Reason 3 Evidence

5 As conclusion, I would like to be like Rudolf Rassendyll was very brave, loyal, and intelligent.

Conclusion Your opinion

A character that has influenced you

Paragraphs Contents Items 1 The novel I have chosen is The Potato People

by Angela Wright. There are several characters that the author trying to convey in the novel. The character that most influenced me is Rudolf Rassendyll.

Novel of your choice.

Character

2 I think that Rassendyll is the most responsible person in this novel. He loves Princess Flavia but he does not let it get in the way of his duty and responsibility towards the King. He sacrifices his love for the sake of the king and the country. Besides that, as a responsible ‘king’, he also signed the important files and documents.

Reason 1 Evidence

3 Rassendyll is also a very brave man. He willingly impersonates the king, who is drugged and kidnapped by Duke Michael. He does not run away from dangerous missions and is not afraid to fight to save the king’s throne and life. Besides that, he also rides the white horse bravely without the guards near him in Old Town. As we know, in Old Town, they did not welcome King Rudolf as the people there wanted Duke Michael as king.

Reason 2 Evidence

4 Lastly, he influenced me a lot because he is the most honourable character in this novel. As proof, he did not accept when Duke Michael offered a hundred thousand pounds for him to leave Ruritania. He also gave back the king’s ring to the rightful owner. The most important is Rudolf would not be the king although he has the golden opportunity to overthrow him and marry Princess Flavia.

Reason 3 Evidence

5 In a nutshell, I am very proud with Rudolf Rassendyll and I want to be just like him.

Conclusion Your opinion

A character that has taught you about life

Paragraphs Contents Items 1 Based on the novel Potato People written by

Angela Wright, I have found a character that has taught me about life that is Marie

Novel of your choice

Character2 Marie, a cheerful Gypsy girl, lives alone before she

meets Patrick. Even though so, she has never been miserable. She still remains cheerful although nobody wants to talk or befriend her. Marie is always full of life despite the suffering around her.

Reason 1 Evidence

3 I also respect her braveness. When Marie bravely brings Patrick to the big house full of food, she asks him to climb the wall first. But, Patrick disagrees and Marie then climbs the wall without a second thought. This shows that Marie is not afraid at all to do everything to survive.

Reason 2 Evidence

4 Lastly, Marie shows me that we must be kind to everyone even strangers. This can be shown when Patrick shares his bread with Marie. Marie did not take advantage of Patrick kindness but instead she repaid him by bringing Patrick to the big house where they eat to their hearts content.

Reason 3 Evidence

5 In a nut shell, I can definitely say that Marie has taught me a lot about life. We must remain cheerful, brave and kind no matter how hard life is.

Conclusion Your opinion

Page 12: Possible Question 2009

A character that you dislike/hate

Paragraphs Contents Items 1 Based on the novel Prisoner of Zenda by

Anthony Hope, a character that I dislike is Rupert of Hentzau. This is because of a few reasons.

Novel of your choice

Character

2 First of all, he is a wicked man. He betrays and kills Duke Michael in order to get Antoinette de Mauban. In the New Castle, Rupert comes into Antoinette’s room at night. The Duke, who is in the castle, hears Antoinette’s scream and try to save her. During their fight, Rupert kills Duke Michael before jumping into the moat.

Reason 1 Evidence

3 Next, he also an insincere person. He pretends to be friendly towards Rassendyll even though he wants to kill him. Rupert of Hentzau comes to the Castle of Tarlenheim bringing Duke Michael’s message. Duke Michael wants to give him 100 thousand pounds to Rudolf if he lefts Ruritania. But, Rudolf refuses the money. Before Rupert goes back to his place, he wants to shake Rudolf’s hand but instead takes out a dagger and stabs Rudolf’s shoulder after Rudolf refuses.

Reason 2 Evidence

4 Lastly, he is also disloyal. He pretends to be friendly with Rassendyll even though he wants to kill him. As an example, he offers to shake hand with Rassendyll but stabs him instead. Though Duke Michael trusts him, Rupert turns against the Duke Michael because he wants power and money as well as Antoinette de Mauban.

Reason 3 Evidence

5 Based on the example that I have given, it is clear why I dislike Rupert of Hentzau.

Similarities and differences between two characters

Paragraphs Contents Items 1 Based on the novel Potato People by Angela

Wright, I saw great similarities and differences between Marie and Sean.

Novel of your choice

Characters2 Marie and Sean are both good friends of

Patrick. Patrick knew Sean since childhood. He was a father figure to the boy who lost his family in the Potato Blight. At the end of the novel, we could see how Sean cares for Patrick that he willing to steal for him. Even though he just met Marie, they become fast friend. Patrick shared bread with a stranger to be repaid by lifelong partner. Marie and Patrick got married and live happily together after they moved to America.

Reason 1 Evidence

3 Another similarity between these two characters was they know how to steal. Although stealing was wrong, Marie did it to survive. She and Patrick sneaked into the big house because they were hungry. Inside, there was more food to feed a whole village. While Marie stole out of forced, Sean did it out of anger. Sean used to be powerful and rich, but when Lord Egham came, everything was snatched away from him. Furious of his sudden loss, Sean took revenge by stealing Lord Egham’s money.

Reason 2 Evidence

4 Marie had the heart of gold. Despite all the wicked stories Patrick heard about gypsies, she was very kind to him. Marie may steal but only because she had to, she would ask if she could just like when he met Patrick. On the other hand, Sean was a corrupted man. Fueled by anger and resentment, he took the worst possible option. Sean killed Mr. Graystone and his two dogs then he stole Lord Egham’s money. Sean also lied about the origins of the money to Patrick.

Reason 3 Evidence

5 As conclusion, Marie and Sean were similar but also different in many ways. Both cared about Patrick and would do a lot to survive. While they both started as good people, Sean changed into a corrupted man at the

An event that has touched your heart/ sad event

Paragraphs Contents Items 1 Based on the novel Potato People written by Angela

Wright, the event that has touched my heart is when Ireland had the potato blight.

Novel of your choice

A sad event 2 Potato blight happened in Ireland and caused

properties to be destroyed. It can be highlighted in the novel when Mr. Graystone and his men destroyed the village and the villagers’ properties. Because of that, they did not have money, food and shelter any more.

Reason 1 Evidence

3 Beside properties being destroyed, many villagers also lose their loved ones. This can be shown when Patrick’s parents died. He felt that he lost the only people in his life. Besides that, Patrick’s friend, Donald died after eating dead dog meat which filled with worms with Patrick because they did not found any food to eat.

Reason 2 Evidence

4 Finally, because of the potato blight, many of the Irish migrated to other country to find food and shelter to survive. They had to leave their beloved home to continue living. Besides that, the people of Skullgoragh and many others were forced out of their villages by their landlord because of the blight. The cruel landlord figured that sheep had more right to live in their land than the villagers.

Reason 3 Evidence

5 As conclusion, potato blight had really brought suffering to the village and nowadays, I hope that Ireland will not suffer from it anymore.

An event that has teaches you about life/friendship/honour/determination

Paragraphs Contents Items 1 Based on The Prisoner of Zenda by Anthony

Hope, an event that had taught me about life was when Rudolf Rassendyll agreed to impersonate the real king because of a few reasons.

Novel of your choice

Event that has teaches me about life.

2 First, it taught me to be braver. Rudolf Rassendyll is brave by riding alone through Old Town. Rudolf and Sapt were brave to fight with Black Michael’s men in the forest and in the castle. Sapt and Fritz were also brave to take risk when they wanted Rudolf to take the place of the king, as there was the only way to prevent Black Michael from getting the crown.

Reason 1 Evidence

3 Secondly, it taught me to be a loyal person. As an example, Josef who was ordered by Sapt and Fritz to guard the king died because he sacrificed his life to protect the king. Besides that, the Famous Six were loyal to Black Michael. Three of them followed Black Michael to Strelsau and another three guarded the real king in Zenda. Fritz and Sapt, the loyal servicemen, showed their loyalty to the king and country of Ruritania by keeping the king in the cellar to save him from Black Michael.

Reason 2 Evidence

4 Lastly, it taught me how to help people in need in my life. Sapt helped Rudolf to kill one of the eight Black Michael’s men in the forest. Josef also helped Rudolf, Sapt, and Fritz by guarding the king with his life in the cellar. Rudolf’s brother, Robert was a helpful person when he found Rudolf an interesting job an attaché to his old friend, Sir Jacob Borrodaile who would be an ambassador in Ruritania in six month’s time.

Reason 3 Evidence

5 As conclusion, I had learnt various values from different characters including from the antagonist from this one event.

Conclusion

Page 17: Possible Question 2009

An event that has changed a character

Paragraphs Contents Items 1 The novel I would like to write about is The

Potato People by Angela Wright. Among all the events in the novel, the event that has changed a character is Potato Blight. Sean has changed a lot because of the potato blight in Ireland.

Novel of your choice

Character that has change

2 Before the Potato Blight, Sean was a rich man. He had a lot of lands, and he and his family ruled over it. Then, the British came and took over everything. Sean lost his family, his lands and also his wealth. It was also the British who brought the Blight to Ireland.

Reason 1 Evidence

3 The Potato Blight was the reason why Lord Egham wanted the people of Skullgoragh to move out of their land. After Mr. Graystone burned the village and evicted the people living there, Sean became very mad. He avenged the people by killing Mr. Graystone and his two dogs. He also stole the money for Patrick. Sean was an honourable man but his hasty decision for revenge took his honour away.

Reason 2 Evidence

4 Lastly, Sean used to be a free man but later a prisoner of Britain. The British soldier caught Sean for the crimes that he convicted. He killed Mr. Graystone and also stole Lord Egham’s money. Luckily, Patrick and Marie were not caught with him.

Reason 3 Evidence

5 In a nutshell, it is clear that the Potato Blight could change a person’s life for the better or for the worse. Unfortunately for Sean, his life took turn for the worst.

Page 19: Possible Question 2009

Do you like / dislike/ enjoy reading the story?

Paragraphs Contents Items 1 Based on the novel Potato people written by

Angela Wright, I really love the story. This is because of a few reasons.

Novel of your choice

2 Potato People is full of adventure. It has

never been a dull moment. When Patrick and Marie go to the forest, they meet with the cannibals. Marie, a gipsy girl teaches Patrick how to defend himself from being eaten alive by the hungry people. When they meet a house that is full of food, they eat to their hearts’ content and steal more food for another day. In their lives in America, we can feel the adventure where they have to do the worst job for the lowest pay and fight slavery.

Reason 1 Evidence

3 Besides, we can also learn many moral values from Potato People. We can see true love shown by Peter towards his adopted daughter, Mary. He loves her like his own when he carries her on his back all the way to find the doctor to treat her. Determination brings success is another moral value in this story. You can see how determine Marie and Patrick as they try to go to America to get a better life. Being gratefully to what we have is another moral value shown in this story. The story teaches me how to be grateful of food, shelter and love.

Reason 2 Evidence

4 Lastly, I also like happy ending. Potato People ends with Patrick finally married to Marie after going through a lot of hardships in their life at Skullgoragh. This shows that, all their efforts and sacrificed are worth it as they gain a happy and meaningful life in America.

Do you dislike the beginning of the story?Paragraph Contents Items 1 Based Potato People by Angela Wright, I

dislike the beginning of the story. Novel of your

choice

2 First of all, Irish people lose their main source of food. In 1840’s a deadly disease destroys the potato crop in Ireland. So, many people die because of starvation. Many of them have to leave their homes and travel to America in searching of food and jobs.

Reason 1 Evidence

3 Then, Patrick has no food to eat. He is a poor boy. When the disease destroys the potato, he does not have any food to eat. Incidentally, there is a dog. Patrick and his friend, Donald eat the dead dog meat which is full of juicy worms. A few days after that, Patrick friends die because of eating the dirty meat.

Reason 2 Evidence

4 Lastly, I dislike the beginning of the story because Mr. Graystone wants to get rid of the farmers and take over the land. He asks his men to throw out the things of the people’s homes and burns the houses although he knows that the people have nothing on that time.

Reason 3 Evidence

5 As the conclusion, the beginning of the story is too sad and I do not like it so much.

Conclusion

Page 21: Possible Question 2009

Do you like the title of the story?

1 Based on the works of Anthony Hope, I liked the title Prisoner of Zenda because of a few reasons.

Novel of your choice

2 First and foremost, it evoked curiosity. The first time I read the title, Prisoner of Zenda, I wondered who were the prisoner and what or where was Zenda. Because of that, I felt drawn to open and read the novel. I wanted to know what exactly Prisoner of Zenda was.

Reason 1 Evidence

3 Secondly, the title told the theme of the story which was adventure. The word prisoner means someone was held captive. Naturally, the prisoner wanted to be rescued. Hence, the readers could guess that the book was about an adventurous rescue mission, Rudolf Rassendyll rescuing King Rudolf from his evil brother, Duke Michael.

Reason 2 Evidence

4 Lastly, I liked the title because of its hidden meaning. After one quick read, we discovered that the king was in the Old Castle. But if you looked carefully, that you could see Rudolf Rassendyll was the prisoner mention in the title. Rudolf Rassendyll came to Ruritania to watch the coronation. But after one night with the king, his life changed as he was asked to impersonate King Rudolf. Because of his resemblance to King Rudolf, Rassendyll was forced to imprison himself in Ruritania to save the throne and the country.

Reason 3 Evidence

5 In a nutshell, I liked the title because it suite the novel wonderfully. Prisoner of Zenda had led me to a memorable adventure throughout Ruritania.

Paragraphs Contents Items 1 I learn to be brave from Rudolf

Rassendyll in the Prisoner of Zenda written by Angela Wright.

Novel of your choice

Lesson2 Ruritania is a foreign country. Even

though, Rudolf was still brave to travel to Ruritania alone. He had never visited the country and knew nothing about Ruritania. Rudolf went there because of his curiosity about his new job that was offered by an ambassador, Sir Jacob Borrodaile. He also wanted to see the Coronation of King Rudolf Fifth.

Reason 1 Evidences

3 Other than that, Rudolf Rassendyll was also brave to save the King. He impersonated the King on Sapt’s suggestion although he knew that he would risk his life. He also showed bravery in Zenda’s Castle. Rudolf went to the Zenda Castle alone even though the action would risk the King’s life being ended by Duke Michael’s men.

Reason 2 Evidences

4 Lastly, this can be seen in the novel when Rudolf chased down Rupert of Hentzau. He chased down Rupert despite being badly wounded while Rupert was fit as a fiddle. Rudolf wanted to stop Rupert from doing cruel deeds in the future.

Reason 3 Evidences

5 In a nutshell, I was happy because I had learned to be brave like Rudolf who was very brave to know new things, to protect someone important and to stop evil deeds from happening.
