INTRODUCTION

Dear Parents/Carers,

We welcome applications from students who are keen to follow the courses we offer in the ethos that

is a characteristic feature of our sixth form. We look forward to welcoming you and to working with you

on your progress.

Sixth formers work in a friendly, but work focused environment. Great importance is attached to the

relationship that the students share with both their teachers and their form tutors who monitor

progress, oversee their personal development and prepare them for the next stage of their lives,

whether that is university, college or the workplace.

The Sixth Form offers a range of courses and experiences. Alongside our A level offering we have

vocational courses to fully support students. Our sixth formers have an impressive history of gaining

outstanding results, preparing our students for a successful transition into higher education or

employment. It is a special feature of the Sixth Form that they also contribute so much to school life

along the way.

Commitment and flair by both students and teachers are two essential criteria's for academic success

and all prospective students should be very clear that at least 16 hours of study per week outside of

lesson times will be necessary for success within their courses.

Finally, I would like to assure all prospective students either from this school or from other schools that

we have an induction process to help you make realistic and appropriate choices. If you are currently

studying elsewhere, please come along and meet us. Our Sixth Formers will be glad to give you a

guided tour of the school and we will be happy to discuss all aspects of the Sixth Form with you.

Making the right choice at this very important time in your career is fundamentally important.

We look forward receiving your applications.

Mrs A Lutchi

Director of Post-16

A LEVEL ENGLISH LITERATURE (AQA)

COURSE INFORMATION

COURSE OUTLINE: The two year course is designed to encourage students to develop interest and enjoyment in literary study, through reading widely and critically. Students have the opportunity to choose some of the texts they study. What exactly will I study? Unit 1 Literary Genres: Aspects of Tragedy

40% of A level

Written paper: 2 hours 30 minutes, closed book, 75 marks. At the core of all the texts students will study is a tragic hero or heroine who is flawed in some way, who suffers and causes suffering to others. Some tragic features will be more in evidence in some texts than in others and students will need to understand how particular aspects of the tragic genre are used and how they work in the three chosen texts. The absence of an ‘aspect’ can be as significant as its presence. Texts studied: Tess of the D’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy Othello by William Shakespeare Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller Unit 2 Texts and Genres: Elements of Crime Writing

40% of A level

Written paper: 3 hours, open book, 75 marks. Some of the texts in this unit pre-date the crime fiction genre that emerged as a recognisable literary genre in the mid-19th century and with academic recognition in the 20th century. However, in all the texts a significant crime drives the narrative and the execution and consequences of the crime are fundamentally important to the way the text is structure. Text Studied: A collection of poems by George Crabbe, Robert Browning and Oscar Wilde The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie Atonement by Ian McEwan Unit 3 Theory and Independence

20% of A level

Coursework, 50 marks. This component is designed to allow students to read widely and to understand that contemporary study of literature needs to be informed by the fact that different theoretical and critical methods can be applied to the subject. This area of the course provides a challenging and wide-ranging opportunity for an introduction to different ways of reading texts and for independent study. In this component, students write about two different literary texts. One of the texts must be a poetry text and the other must be prose. Texts studied: AQA Critical Anthology Texts selected by students in consultation with class teacher

Entry Requirements? Entry Grade B or above in GCSE English/English Literature. An interest in literature and independent reading is essential.

What type of job will this subject prepare me for? A study of literature will prepare students for all sorts of careers in which analysis, interpretations and the ability to communicate effectively are involved. A Level English Literature is listed as a facilitating subject by Russell Group uni-versities.
