Commander’s Message
I encourage us this year to create opportunities to spend more time
together. Call up and talk to your comrade that you invited to join the
American Legion, or the comrade that asked you to join. We have
Military Training and Service in common. We have Goals and Values in
common. We all have life’s Problems and Hopes in common. Reach out
and contact your fellow legionnaires any way you can.
February is the annual presentation of the Law Enforcement Officer of the Year award
for the city of Hillsboro. The meal before the presentation will be provided by the Post and the
dessert prepared by the Auxiliary.
We will also have a ?? Surprise Menu ?? dinner on February 17 at 6 PM.
In preparation for these events we will have a general hall cleanup on February 3
beginning at 9 AM.
By the time of this newsletter we will have submitted the application to the State for a
grant to construct a monument at the Washington County Veteran’s Circle. This will symbolize
the American Legion’s 100 years of service to Washington County by all the Posts in the
county. We will be asking each county Legionnaire to contribute $1 or $2 to cover our portion
of the project. Some of the Post members have already made generous contributions to this.
We will present more information next month.
Bob Gnos- Commander
Auxiliary News
Our Auxiliary President is in Texas to attend the Memorial Service
for her Mother. Please keep her in your thoughts.
Not much went on in January, I think that we were all resting up
from the holidays. Now it is time to get back to work.
At the February and March meeting the Auxiliary will be providing the desserts for the
potluck. The Post will be honoring the Police Officer of the Year and the Firefighter of the
Year. March 17 the Auxiliary will be cooking to celebrate the Legion’s birthday. Watch the
March newsletter for more details.
I had the opportunity to tour the Veteran’s Home in Lebanon. It is a state of the art
facility and only about 4 years old. The Veterans are treated with such respect there. The
staff is great, and the Veterans love their home. If you are in the area, stop by and see if you
can get a tour. I have a list of extra things that the staff would like for the Veterans. Come to
the February and help us decide if we can send things their way.
Hope to see you at our next meeting or social event. Linda Liebenow, Unit Treasurer

POST MEMBERSHIP REPORT
Your dues were due on January 1st. If you have not yet paid your 2018 dues, you are
delinquent. Please check your card, and if you do not have a current card dated 2018, please
renew asap. Other than that membership is currently way ahead of last year and that is great.
Remember, if your Legion magazine stops showing up in your mail box, you need to renew
your membership. We are only as strong as our numbers. In twenty years we have gone from
3.3 million members to less than 2 million. We are losing 50,000 members per year due to
death and non-renewals.
I will be going to Washington DC the 24th of February along with 5 other legionnaires
from Oregon to visit our representatives and senators, to let them know the priorities The
American Legion has concerning our veterans and their families.
Rob Liebenow—Membership Chairman
Donations Needed We are looking for donations to fund the replacement of all the windows in the Post
building. Our windows are old and we need to replace them to save energy, which will save us funds on heating and cooling. The estimated cost for replacement is $10,000.00 parts and
labor. If you would like to donate please send a check or money order to: Hillsboro Post No. 6 American Legion
285 W. Main St. Hillsboro, OR 97123
To donate online through PayPal please go to: http://hillsboropost6.org/?page_id=197

Boy Scout Eagle Project!
Once again Post 6 has received a request for a project from a potential Eagle Scout. In
the past we have had our cedar fence replaced, and also completed an upgrade to the lounge
area of the Post Hall.
If any member has an idea for a Boy Scout project that can benefit not only the Scout
but also the Post by its completion, please attend the next meeting with your idea.

Weekday Evening Events
The Post is looking for ideas to encourage more participation from our members. A
“Music Monday” has been mentioned, which would be a jam session of anyone who wants to
jam on their instruments. Another proposal is “Money Monday” to teach investment strategy.
Please bring your ideas to the next meeting. Mike Marusa - E-board member at large
