    Filler conceals the gap thatmay exist between the faceof a panel and the back of a27"H pedestal. Fillers arealso used to provide stabilityfor pedestal andworksurface configurationsthat are not panel-wrapped. Tip: Fillers for proud frontpedestals conceal a 1⁄2" gap. Fillers for flush frontpedestals conceal a 13⁄8"gap.

    Product Details

    Beams are interchange-able for use in overhead orfence applications. Beamsconnect at desk height orstanding height to form fenceapplications. Fence applica-tions require the beam to beinverted from an overheadapplication prior to connec-tion with a post. T-slotsshould be oriented at thebottom of the beam whenused in overhead applica-tions. They should be ori-ented at the top of the beamwhen used in fence applica-tions. Beams can beattached to any location onthe post. Maximum loadrules vary by location.

    Overall height of postand beam is 931⁄2" withthe leveling mechanism inthe lowest position. Clear -ance from floor to undersideof beam is 85"H.

    Post and Beam

    All power and commu-nication distribution is external to the posts andbeams. A series of verticalcable tubes work in conjunc-tion with horizontal troughsto route power and cables.

    Cable management for technology hubs issupported by vertical tubesin two positions: desk height(33") or standing height(401⁄2"). Hubs may be installedat any height, but verticaltubes must be field cut.

    Vertical post tubesmust be used to concealpower harnesses and com-munication cables routed totechnology hubs. The heightof the vertical tube is dictatedby the location of the hub.Branch ing harness-to-harnessconnectors do not fit in vertical tubes.

    Horizontal fence tubesprovide horizontal powerand cable management atfence beam locations.Specify tube to match widthof fence beam. The bottomof the fence tube is 63⁄4"below the bottom of thebeam.Tip: Remember to order ver-tical post tube (BXPTHF11or BYPTHF11) to managecables between a horizontalfence tube and a hub.

    Cord/cable managerclips are available for low-capacity cable managementunder a fence-height beam.Maximum capacity of theclips is two standard powercords and two standarddata cables.

    Horizontal overheadbeam troughs providehorizontal power and cablemanagement at the over-head beam location. Over-head beam troughs mustalways connect to a cornertrough on each end.

    Corner troughs attach tooverhead beams at intersec-tions to provide a smoothvisual transition for cablesand power harnesses.

    Beam filler troughs are used to manage cableswhere cross beams are notpresent.

    Cable capacity fortroughs is 30 category 5cables with two power har-nesses or 50 category 5cables with one harness.Cable capacity for fencetubes and vertical post tubesis 30 category 5 cables withone power harness or 50category 5 cables with noharness.

The faceplatesmust be installed by thecommunications contractor.A hub can house three face-plates if power and cablingis routed into the top of thehub—or four faceplates if no power and cabling isrouted into the top of thehub. The number of jacks(two or three) per faceplatevaries by manufacturer.

    Decora mountingstrap-style faceplatesare typically used for appli-cation within an electricaljunction box and coveredwith Decora style electricalfaceplates.

    Post and Beam requiresa minimum of an L-configu-ration (90° or 120°) for sta-bility, consisting of threeposts and two beams.

    If your usage is knownin advance:Add up the amperage usedby each piece of equipmentin the workstation. When -ever you reach 60 amps (20 amps times 3 circuits) or80 amps (20 amps times 4circuits) from items that arelikely to be used at the sametime, you have reached thelimit for a single power-in.Specify another power-inand continue until all equip -ment is powered.

    If the circuits will normallybe subject to a continuousload (three or more hours ofcontinuous use, such aslights or computers), theNEC requires that circuitcapacity be “de-rated” by 20 percent. Therefore, treatcircuits used for continuousloads as if they were ratedat 16 amps instead of theregular 20 amps.

    Try to anticipate futureincreases in power require -ments and build someexcess capacity into yourplan.cSee table at right for typi-cal and actual amperageusages for components.

    To calculate amperage whenthe wattage of a device isknown, divide watts by 120.

    Some appliances, such aslarge copiers, coffee makers,or space heaters requiremost of the current avail-able on a 20-amp circuit. Itis recommended that suchdevices be supplied withtheir own receptacle/circuit,directly from the building.This leaves the capacity ofthe furniture circuits avail -able for the more dynamicrequirements of the officeequipment.

    If your usage is notknown in advance: The National ElectricalCode (NEC) allows a maxi -mum of 10 receptacles oneach 15-amp circuit. Thisprovides up to 30 recepta clesfor each 3-circuit power-inand 40 receptacles for each4-circuit power-in.

    Implementing Post and Beam requirescareful planning. To ensure you have the mosteffective installation, with the appropriate length ofharnesses, follow the steps outlined below.

    1First, you’ll need a drawing that shows the layoutof the Post and Beam components with accuratedimensions of individual posts, beams, and fencesand the locations of any hubs.

    2Find the fixed points in your layout—thepoints you’re trying to connect. In this example,the infeed from the building and the two hubs arefixed points.

    10The longest harness length available is12' (144"). For longer runs, you can link multipleharnesses together. As a general rule, you’ll wantto minimize connections. Remember that you’llneed to specify and use harness-to-harness con-nectors to make these links. The harness-to-har-ness connector has no effect on the length of theharness you’ll need.

    4Determine overall strategy.To minimize the distance harnesses must travel to bring power to the hubs, try to run harnessesfrom the infeed point to hubs near the center ofyour installation, then use branching connectors to allow harnesses to reach outlying hubs.

    In this example, the infeed point is near hub 1,which is toward the center of the installation. Hub1 should be a pass-through hub to allow thepower run to continue. Then, to minimize cost, youshould take harness run 2 down the center beamas far as possible and then use a branching con-nector to create two separate runs—one from thebranching connector to hub 2 and the other in theopposite direction to hub 3. If you avoid branchingtoo soon, a branching connector can help youminimize redundant harnesses. Hubs 2 and 3 canbe termination hubs.

    5Calculate harness run 1.To reach hub 1, the first harness run must be 174" (48" + 96" + 30" = beam + beam + verticaldistance) to reach the 27" hub harness. Combineany number of harnesses that add up to this num-ber or slightly greater. Example: 12' (144") harness+ 32" harness = 176". You will need two harness-to-harness connectors. The first harness-to-har-ness connector joins the two harnesses, and theother connector connects to the 27" hub harness. cSee Dimensions for Harnesses, page 17

    6Calculate harness run 2.Harness run 2 is a special calculation. Ideally, this harness would run from hub 1 to the branching point (B), then split to run in oppositedirections to the remaining hubs. That ideal path would require a 16' (192") harness (24" + 168" = vertical distance + beam), but nomodular harness is that long. Instead, use a 12'(144") harness and a 50" harness followed by abranching harness-to-harness connector. A con-nector is needed between the 33" hub harnessand the 12' harness and another between the 12' harness and the 50" harness.cSee Dimensions for Harnesses, page 17
