Human resource management in today’s businesses
Human resource management is the function within an organisation that concentrates
on recruitment, management and providing direction for the people who work within
an organisation. It is an interdisciplinary subject drawing on economics, law, sociology,
psychology, political science and history. It provides an organisational function that deals
with issues related to people such as reward and remuneration, recruitment, personal
development, performance management, organisational development, safety, health,
benefits, employee motivation and communication.
This discipline is a strategic and comprehensive approach to managing people and
the workplace culture and environment. Effective HRM enables employees to contribute
effectively and productively to the overall company direction and the accomplishment of
the organisation’s goals and objectives.
As a function in today’s businesses across the globe, HRM is seen as increasingly
important within organisations, shifting from a traditional personnel and administrative role
to a more strategic and directional role within an organisation adding value to its most
important asset – its employees.
The work of all managers in today’s working environment, not just in HR departments,
requires people management skills and knowledge, which makes our MSc Human
Resource Management programme of key value to both current and potential managers.

We welcome and encourage you to visit
our campuses and specialist
postgraduate centres. The University
holds a number of organised events, such
as Open Days at our Canterbury campus,
where all potential students
(undergraduate and postgraduate) are
welcome, and specific postgraduate
events on the Canterbury campus. Please
see www.kent.ac.uk/opendays or contactEnrolment Management Services for
further details.
Even if you are not able to attend one of
these planned events, the campus at
Canterbury is open to the public, so you
can visit at any time and take a self-guided
tour for which we can provide maps and
documentation. You may also be able to
combine this with a visit to your potential
supervisor or if you are invited to attend
an interview. For students from outside
the UK, the European and International
Offices are open all year round and are
happy to organise individual tours –
please contact them in advance.
International students
The University has many local
representatives around the world. If you
wish to speak to a representative in your
own country, please contact the
International Development Office or see
the website below. We hold interview and
guidance sessions at representatives’
offices if you would like the chance to
meet with a member of staff. See
www.kent.ac.uk/internationalstudent/representation for details.
Staff from the University of Kent visit many
countries throughout the world, often at
higher education fairs, giving you the
opportunity to speak directly to someone
who can answer your questions about all
aspects of life at Kent. We also hold pre-
departure events in-country for new
students. For further information, see
