THE APPLICATION

• Applications are submitted online and are available now!

• Print and review before submitting

• You are responsible for completing and submitting your applications

(not mom & dad!)

• Many colleges use the “Common Application”

• Know your deadlines

TYPES OF ADMISSION

• Regular Admission - Apply by a fixed date, usually after January 1st

with April decision notification

• Rolling Admission - Applications are considered as soon as all required materials are received

• Early Decision - Apply by a fixed date, usually November 1st with January decision notification

• Note: If/when accepted, you are ethically bound to attend and must withdraw all applications from other schools.

• Early Action - Apply by a fixed date, usually November 1st with December decision notification

• Note: You are not required to attend if accepted.

THE ESSAY• Not all colleges require an essay (“Optional” means use as an opportunity)

• Understand the essay topic

• Be creative (share something interesting, unique, exciting, how you were

resilient/able to overcome a challenge)

TEST SCORES

Students are responsible for sending test scores to colleges• Request to have your scores sent when you register to take the

test (for free)

OR• Have them sent after you receive your scores by logging in to your

College Board or ACT account (for a fee)

SCHOOL COUNSELORS DO NOT SEND TEST SCORES!

REQUESTING TRANSCRIPTS (FOR COLLEGE & NCAA)

STEP 1 - ONLINE REQUEST• Submit online request in Parchment

• Access code required (will be provided by the School Counseling Office)

• Submit one for request for each school

STEP 2 - FORM• Complete/submit Transcript Request form to Career Center

• One required for each school you apply to

• Due at least 15 school days before application deadline

• Located on School Counseling website or in Career Center

• Hand to Career Center Asst. DO NOT leave on desk

Includes 7th semester recalculated GPA and class rank

SECONDARY SCHOOL REPORTWHAT IS IT?A student evaluation form, includes counselor feedback about student’s academic achievement, extracurricular involvement, character, etc. Also gives counselors the opportunity to “recommend“ the student for admission.

• Most colleges require one from a counselor • BRHS uses our own LCPS form, no need to print and submit to counselor• NOTE: this will often suffice as the Counselor Recommendation, but it is the

student’s responsibility to let the counselor know if a letter of recommendation is needed or required.

• Provide what the college requests (nothing more, nothing less)

• If a teacher letter is needed:

Request in person at least 15 school days prior to the deadline

Provide information re: courses taken, grades earned in that subject, reminders of

how you went above and beyond on a project, tutored others, etc.)

Think about who you are asking:

• Who knows you best?

• Does the letter need to be focused on your area of study (ex: Engineering majors -

math or science teacher)

• Be aware of timing and deadlines - some teachers may have several requests
