ADVANCING WORLD-CLASS EDUCATION
POST SECONDARY C.A.N
AUGUST 3, 2017 MEETING MINUTES
CAN Goal: Communitywide data will reflect evidence of continuous improvement annually in the percentage of high
school graduates who enter a post-secondary career path including, but not limited to, a two or four-year degree
program, military or civic service, training or apprenticeship leading to certification in a desired field.
Indicators:
1. Increasing the number of students competing the FAFSA process will help improve outcomes toward the
CAN goal.
2. Increasing the number of students enrolling and completing Dual Enrolment (DE) courses while in in high
school will improve outcomes toward the CAN goal.
Attendance: Dave Dirksen, Sacha Siskonen, Jane Gaun, Ari Wilder, Scott Pettitt, Brent Neilson, Veronica Hippolito,
Marny Babbitt, Rusty Saunders, Paul Kulpinski
Paul gave an update on status of the idea of the high school counselors to convene a community presentation on
cell-phone and social media technology and its impact on the student day. He reported that there was a loss of
momentum from the group around this and that his focus will be on folding the counselors into the conversation
of the Post-Secondary CAN and allow for another opportunity for the idea to arise at another time. Paul will reach
out to HS principals to get re-commitment for counselors for existing meeting time.
One of the concerns that the counselors had was whether all teachers and even if the community recognized that
college and career readiness is the responsibility of everyone, not just counselors. Brent reminded the CAN that
the Arizona A-F indicators are now required by state statue which will help to drive the culture in schools for
broader, shared accountability for student success. We must shift the culture that we are all responsible for
college and career readiness.
Brent spoke to the FAFSA indicator for moving the broad goal of the CAN. Donna Lyons (CHS) and Diane Sorden
(FHS) are working on a FAFSA drive with promotion and resources made available. When this happens we will help
to share and promote the information. Below are the dates that have been set at CHS:
9/21 CHS College and Career Readiness Night
10/26 CHS All School College Fair
10/31 CHS College Application Day
11/2 CHS FAFSA Night
1/31 CHS FAFSA Day
The way CHS coordinates their drive is that evening events usually run 5:30 – 7 PM. College Fair usually runs 1 –
2:30 PM. FAFSA Day is all day, seniors are called down to the library computer labs to complete their FAFSA. FHS
Calendar is attached after this document. Brent will follow up with Diane and Donna to see if these events are
open to all area high school students, or even if other counselors, administrators, teachers could observe their
process so they can replicate it in their own school.
ADVANCING WORLD-CLASS EDUCATION
Brent added that Roxanne will make FAFSA trainings available to counselors. Goal is to identify what the
deliverables will be. Roxanne will convene the counselors with Brent on a date to be determined.
Financial literacy is also planned to be part of the FAFSA conversation.
The discussion turned to the Dual Enrollment indicator. CCC is the organization that grants the dual enrollment
credit. Veronica updated the CAN that CCC has hired Gonzalo Perez who has experience with DE and will be
responsible for this along with Alex Purchase. CCC was also awarded an Americorps grant and will hire another
positon to support this effort. A LAMP grant (STEM) was awarded to CCC for additional support. A plan is in the
process of being formed, in particular to how CCC can expand DE to include charter schools and others. One
challenge is credentialing teachers (through higher learning commission) which is a bigger barrier now with recent
changes in state law. Addressing this may require a legislative change. Credentialing is a bigger problem for math,
English, rather than CTE. Silos have developed between AP, DE, and IB programs which has created barriers for
collaboration between teachers across these programs.
Data needed: A-F report with “how did they achieve this score” (Source: FUSD); Gap in instructors certified for DE
(Source: CCC Alex Purchase); Data sharing agreement with FUSD, CCC; Course alignment – AP, DE, IB where is there
potential for overlap and coordination (source: FUSD); DE student enrollment numbers from before and after
change in tuition/fee payee process (Source: CCC); How many kids actually accomplish their goal from their ECAP
(is this available? Lynette at FUSD contacts all graduates and interviews them but would require someone to
compare this with their ECAP) Paul will work on initiating the accumulation of this data.
Paul will formalize a data sharing agreement between LAUNCH and FUSD and CCC.
