TIPS TO PREPARE FOR FILING FOR FAFSA

Parents of our Senior Hawks! Remember that the FAFSA (FREE Application for Federal Student Aid) opens on January 1st. Be aware! Many Institution’s Scholarships and Grants are connected to the FAFSA application. So be sure to get your 2016 taxes filed early to insure you graduate has the best possible chance of a getting all the money available to them. Remember all institutions NOW REQUIRE all incom-ing freshmen to complete the FAFSA as part of their ap-plication process. Here are some tips to prepare and complete this process:

2016 Graduates need to have completed all universi-ty, community college, and technical school applications before submitting the completed FAFSA application or these institutions will not be able to receive the FAFSA distribution infor-mation.

Make sure to use the website to insure that you are

using the FREE Application for FAFSA as there are many sites out there that will allow you to complete what looks like the official application and then charge you at the end.

Remember the online application for 2016 graduates

does not open till January 1, 2016. You are ap-plying for the wrong year if you start the appli-cation before this date before this date.

To begin preparing NOW for this process go to the

FAFSA website above and print out the paper application under “Filing Options,” to use as a WORKSHEET.

Create FSA (Federal Student Aid) IDs. You can find

the link for these IDs on the FAFSA site one for the Graduate and one for only ONE Parent. This how the completed application will be electroni-cally signed when completed and submitted.

Begin filling in all the needed information/data on

this paper application/worksheet NOW to make your online application easier.

Starting January1, 2016 you can begin entering all

needed information/data in the online applica-tion. Use the SAVE option until the 2015 tax data is entered. WARNING do not submit this application until the tax information for 2015 (not 2014) is entered. In the past when graduates and parents have submitted using ear-lier tax information it was very difficult to get the new tax data entered and updated. It can even delay there distribution of funds you graduate qualifies for.

Once the FAFSA application is completed you will

see online an estimated amount of distributions. To get the complete information you and your graduate will need to contact each institution that has been applied.

Voters approved the passage of a $70 million bond at the Nov. 3 election. The Maricopa County Recorder’s Office reported 60.26 percent “yes” to 39.74 percent “no.” The approval allows the district to fund capital improvements at each of our nine high schools. Examples of these improvements include roof repairs, school safety upgrades, cafeteria infrastructure renova-tions, technology and equipment. We thank the GUHSD com-munity for their continued support of our schools and our stu-dents. To learn more about how the bond will be used, please click here.

DECA students from Apollo and Greenway spent a busy week-end in Cottonwood and Jerome studying marketing, travel and tourism, and hospitality concepts. Our CTE students gained first hand experience with locally owned businesses, marketing materials along the Verde Valley train, The Blazin M Ranch family, and retail establishments in Jerome. The trip was truly a customized educational experience aligned with nation-al work readiness standards. On October 22nd, the students attended a first ever private presentation by the J.W. Marriott at Desert Ridge. This was the first time the resort has given access to high school students in this professional capacity.

Fall sports wrap up Apollo’s swim team competed at state swim meet on Nov. 6-7. Competing included Kevin Kleissle swimming 200 IM, Andrew Lineweaver swimming 50 freestyle, and 100 freestyle, and a relay team the 200 M Freestyle made up of Kleissle, Lineweav-er, Gaspar Leva, Joseph Ochoa, Ryan Grimes, and Dan Geroni-mo.
