Called by the New York Times one of the “unlikely rock stars of the American food

scene,” he’s a “cultural revivalist,” which is a clever way of defining a food activist who writes

about changing the American food system by recovering the lost art of fermentation.

The CHC’s Honored Author Series presents

Mary Szybist“I have always done my best work in long, uninterrupted spaces where I can listen, really listen, to the line I have just written; it is in stretches of silence that I can hear what comes next.”

Mary Szybist is Assistant Professor of English at Lewis & Clark College, and received her MFA from the Iowa

Writer’s Workshop. She is the author of Granted (2003), a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. She recently received a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, and is one of two recipients of the 2009 Witter Brynner Award, selected by Poet Laureate Kay Ryan for the Library of Congress.

The first ten students to sign up on the board outside the library to attend the event will receive a FREE copy of Syzbist’s Granted
