Poster Research

Kidulthood’s poster is the first social realism film poster we looked at as a group. What we think made it look powerful was how the poster had a special overlay effect to it. Without it the poster looks like an image that just has random layers added on it.

This grey overlay allows the poster to look gritty and allow audiences to quickly establish that this film is possibly based on the gangster youth subculture. This is because grey can be linked with negative connotations.

So after looking at this poster, as a group we decided that we were going to put an overlay on our image that will we use in the poster to give out the obvious theme of the short film. That is the gangster youth subculture.

The next poster which is from ‘Harry Brown’, it has a more older fashioned feel about it with the older generation taking part (Brown’s character).

The use of black and white introduced shows the clear contrast between the younger and older generations. This film like the rest is about social realism. It also shows that there are reviews from big institutions on the top.

This informed us that the characters in our poster should stick to their background through Mise en scene techniques so it is then clear to the audience who the protagonist and antagonists are. Also we acknowledged that reviews are needed so therefore we wanted to introduce this into our poster.

The poster is for ‘This is England’ We see the possible main characters within the movie. Each characters personality is shown in each individual way.

Moreover this is another social realism poster in which shows the reviews on the top.

This confirms that having reviews on a social realism film poster really is a traditional convention on film posters. This therefore engages the audience to watch the film. Reviews given reasons to why people should watch a film. They may not watch it because of opposing blockbuster films, social realism films would be stereotypically B movies.

This film poster is for ‘Fish Tank’ and was the last social realism poster we looked at. The bright colours of this poster gives us the feel of a nice upbeat film, however this does not foreshadow what the film has to offer or what it is about.

The title of the film is in a bold simplistic font. This therefore allows us to relate to the poster as it can give the general simplistic feel of social realism about young teens. The use of the masthead really gives the film recognition and is therefore more reputable.

We will use this set up within our poster as we saw that it gave us inspiration to make it easier for the audience to consume. We incorporated this into our poster which is called “BLANK” as it is easy on the eye and therefore is not complicated. We also used a masthead in our poster which was “From the creators of escape” this also gave our poster recognition as it is shown that there has been previous successful productions.
