Pink- Stupid Girls

Page 3: Postmodernism theories applied to Pink-Stupid Girls

We chose to select this text as it is a good example of postmodernism. The music video, directed by

Dave Meyers, uses many postmodernism features.

The artist in the text adopts new characters of different roles throughout the music video which

represent two opposite. Pink uses Fragment identity throughout this

simulation as a whole. The audience can tell what they are watching is false reality(hyper reality) as

the video is full of ‘air heads’ ‘vain’ or ‘power heads’.

In the text the artist makes numerous references to other texts. Pink mocks: Paris Hilton-Sex TapeBeyoncé-Crazy in Love Video Jessica Simpson-Music videoMary Kate- Shopping Lindsey Lohan- Car incidentThese references were all the news and relevant to the pop culture

PARODY

In Stupid Girls the director has uses other forms of media in the text. Playing on the television is a 1950’s styled etiquette girls finishing school is shown. The bricolage is used in juxtaposition to scene where a character is shopping ,driving etc. It was used so the audience could grasp onto the concept more

BRICOLAGE

Pink has again used another form of media in her music video. Often in Cartoons the ‘shoulder angel’ is used to show the person speaking to their conscious about what to do. This adaption is respectful and within taste it doesn’t mock the doing. It was used because in the shot there is cantered a young girl- The shoulder angel can be applied to the girl because she is the audience for cartoons.

HOMAGE/BRICOLAGE

The artist has imitated a popular TV programme of the period. Pink had used the F.R.I.E.N.D.S 2003 episode and copied it.This was a pop culture reference as the many watched the comedy.

Another pop culture reference is the MeanGirls Mum which is copied at the end. Even though the actor is extreme this was used to reference movie. The actor was tanned, bleach blonde, wearing hot pink and middle aged+

In two part of the text Pink breaks the fourth wall and talks to the audience directly. She is central shot and looks directly to the camera making a relationship with the audience. This shot is used to share pinks feelings, breaking down the fourth wall makes what she is saying almost like it’s a conversation. During the shots, the audience become hyper conscious as in reality the pop star wouldn’t actually talk to them.
