Many have come, manyhave gone, but weManipuris remain how

we were 30 or 40 years back—nochange, no development. “Manypolitical parties have come up withvaried promises which were neverfulfilled,” is the general tone ofManipuris in the City.

With the Assembly electionround the corner, all the politicalparties of the state have come upwith their own election mani-festoes with various promises, theysay about the impending Assemblyelection in their home state.

“During every election thescenario is the same: develop-ment and change. But we are

wiser now and know better,” said,Bipin Phongam, Ph.d studentfrom University of Hyderabad. Heclearly harbours disbelief inpolitical parties.

“The blockade in Manipur hasunleashed corruption in a big way.An LPG cylinder costs arou nd`2000. A litre of petrol costsaround `200 in the black market.

How can anyone afford a cylinderat such prices? Whatever the issueis, it’s always the common manwho suffers,” he laments. Bipin isreferring to the ethnic str ifes fre-quent between Kukis and Nagasthat often lead to highway block-ades and consequent shortage ofessential goods. The state isextremely backward as compared

to other states. There are no prop-er roads, and there is shortage ofdrinking water and electricity. Many important roads are filledwith dust he said, emphasisingthat vast changes are the need ofthe hour. “A common platform isrequired for different communi-ties to come forward, talk andexpress their differences to bringpeace in the state.” he says.

It’s not just Bipin but otheryouths from the state are of thesame view. Anguished by thepoor state of affairs in their homestate youngsters have started anonline campaign on a social net-working site ‘People’s Campaignfor Assembly Election 2012:Deciding Our Destiny’. Manypeople are networking onlineand offline in a bid to bring abouta popular platform that wouldlead to development of the state.

“The scenario in Manipur has

forced many of us to stay awayfrom our homeland. It’s like a mil-itary rule in Manipur, no matterwhich government comes in topower, nothing is going tochange. The candidates shouldrealise that people are not askingfor the moon or the stars; theyjust want basic necessities likefood, water and electricity. It’s nota matter of who promises what, but it’s a matter of how the peoplejudge their promises,” said HitlerMaibam, employee of MahindraSatyam and chief coordinator,Hyderabad Manipuri Society.

“I am not going to Manipur tocast my vote as it’s a long journeyfrom Hyderabad. Moreover noone takes the election seriouslybecause no matter whicheverparty comes to power the situa-tion will remain same in thestate,” he adds.

The police are on their toesthese days at theShamshabad airport. No, not

looking for International gangstersor terrorists but for African pas-sengers coming with Khatsaplings, which when chewed canintoxicate a person. The police areespecially alert when it comes tothose innocuous-looking visitorscoming from South Africa who arebelieved to be staying mostly inthe Tolichowki area, peddling Khatleaves. As part of the Republic Dayalert, the police who were search-ing baggage along with customsofficials were asked to specificallycheck for saplings, leaves or rootsof this plant.

Of late some Africans havebeen coming into the City withthese saplings that are otherwisebanned in countries like the USand UK. According to reports thisis the next addictive drug that hasbeen doing the rounds in the Citysince Cocaine and LSD are expen-sive. The stems and leaves of thisplant are chewed for a “kick”, andis said to have an exhilaratingsmell. The police say, that the Khatis like any other banned drug witha narcotic effect.

The leaves and stems of theseplants that are popularly known asKhat or Khata Khat are now beingsold in Hyderabad. Although it is

not used like brown sugar, it ischewed on like a pan leaf withoutany masala.

The cost of the Khat sapling

ranges from `100 to `500, which ismuch less than the price of othernarcotics.

Though the saplings were

brought in earlier as well, theywere passed off as just someexotic saplings that were beingbrought in for greenery. eventu-ally though, the police learntabout its intoxicating effects andhave now begun scanning for-eigners and other tourists at theairport for possession of Khat. The police themselves are under-going classes on this so that theycan identify the saplings. Sincethe leaves and stem do not havean aroma they are difficult toidentify this drug.

Indian artists have managed to make amark in the international art market inthe past. The rapidly growing Indian art

market is giving these creative minds animpetus as is seen in the Indian art fairthat kickstarted on January 25 in NewDelhi. This is the fourth time India is host-ing artists of international repute.

The art fair has galleries fromAustralia, Spain, France, UK and Italyamong others exhibiting works of theirartists. For art lovers, it’s a treat with theworks of Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali,Damien Hirst and others on display. Thefair will also offer a perfect platform toIndian artists to showcase their works.Curator of Muse art gallery, Kali Sudheerwho was at the opening ceremony of thefair, said, “With recession, the art sectorhad taken a beating. But this fair willbreathe a new life into it. The influx of for-eign buyers is increasing. The displays thistime are fabulous and I am trying todecide which ones I will pick up.”

Hyderabad is still at a nascent stage

when it comes to art. Yet it has its share ofart lovers like Avani Rao, curator andowner of Iconart gallery, who will be at thefair on January 28. “The quality of workthis time is excellent and for an artist it isvery satisfying to receive appreciation.Hyderabad is still very conventional, though. People are unable to appreciatethe different forms of art and are not curi-ous to learn more which we are trying tobreak here by displaying varied pieces ofart,” she said.

Sudheer agrees saying, “Hyderabad ishardly on the art scene. It is going to takeus at least a decade to reach whereMumbai or Delhi are in terms of art. Wedon’t have a very huge section of art loversor artists in Hyderabad.”

For city-based artist Laxman Aele, thisis the perfect opportunity to showcase hiswork. A three-foot tall painting by himusing 24,000 crayons has been lauded. Hesaid, “This is a great platform for artists. With European galleries investing inIndian art work, it’s a good opportunity toshowcase our work in the Western marketas well. Besides, the paintings on displayare very inspirational.”

“We used to con-sume waterdirectly fromthis lake about

10 years ago. In fact, wheneverpeople ran out of water, they usedto fill a bucket from the lake anduse it. Now the lake is so pollutedthat the water can’t be used foranything,” said Sideshwar Goud, member, Save Our Urban Lake(SOUL) who was born in the areaand continues to live here. TheNGO has been crying hoarseabout the deteriorating conditionof Kamuni Cheruvu, a lake nearthe Shamshabad Airport.

Kamuni Cheruvu is a 25 acrelake, that until 10 years ago, wasthe pride of the residents whoused this lake extensively. Thelake is now polluted, and what’sworse is that it has beenencroached even by the AndhraPradesh Cental Power Distri -bution Company Limited(APCPDCL) sub-station.

The APCPDCL sub-station isliterally in the middle of the lake, blatantly ignoring the Full TankLevel (FTL) limit, says JasveenJairath, member of SOUL. “It issurprising how the governmenthas chosen to ignore the sub-sta-tion when it is clearly violatinglake rules. The sub-station extendsonto the waters so much so that, part of the water seeps into theboundary. In fact, there are electri-cal poles inside this water body,”pointed out Jasveen.

The assistant engineer of thesub-station on Kamuni Cheruvu ,however, remained unavailablefor comment.

Jasveen added that the FTL,marked by stones, is wronglymarked. “If they are marked cor-rectly, the water should not crossthe FTL stones, but the watercrosses the stones. How does thisindicate the full tank level?” ques-tions Jasveen.

Misused by residentsThe proprietor of a leading

jewellery store has allegedly

encroached eight acres of landnear the lake where even theboundary wall extends onto thelake. Sideshwar said that thesepeople are well-known and hav-ing great political contacts andthat is why no one, not even thegovernment, can question them.

Apart from the seweragewater that is channeled into thelake, residents also freely throwgarbage into the water. “There arefour major restaurants in thearea. They dispose their wasteinto the lake throughout the dayand add to the pollution. All theserestaurants have dedicated sew-

erage lines which empty in thewater body. We have tried to stopthese restaurants, but they refuseto comply,” said Sideshwar.

The irrigation departmenthad sent a notice to the fourrestaurants for disposing wasteinto the lake in September, 2011.“But that hasn’t deterred them. They continue as they please,”said Sideshwar. To the naked eye,the water in Kamuni Cheruvu willappear green and infected withsolid waste floating around.

Postnoon encountered a manwho came on a scooter to dumpwaste and another who relieved

himself into the lake. Advamma, who has been living

here since age 7, said that the air-port’s proximity to the lake wasresponsible for its degradation.“No one had even heard of this lakebefore the airport was set up. It wasonly after Shamshabad came intothe limelight during the realtyboom that people started cominghere. This has proved to be a bane. The lake is in a neglected state. Itneeds to be restored immediately,”she opined. Despite repeatedattempts, the officials of the LakeConservation, HMDA, remainedunavailable for comment.

With the Budget Sessi -on fast approa chingand the Jagan-sup-porting MLAs not

res p onding to the speaker’s sum-mons to answer his queries ontheir resignation, pressure ismounting on the political bossesto show them the door, it is learnt.

In this context, Speaker NManohar’s recent remark isindicative of the official mood.Asked why MLAs are either ignor-ing or slow to respond to his sum-mons, he said, “Replying to anotice by the speaker is the discre-tion of the MLAs, but the speakerneed not wait until the responsecame from a member.”

It is learnt that the ChiefMinister Kiran Kumar Reddy and

PCC chief Botsa Satyanar ayanahave come to a conclusion thatall the MLAs who have defiedtheir party whip must be disqual-ified. The decision was also con-veyed to the AP in-charge for theCongress affairs, Ghulam NabiAzad. The speaker would act justbefore the Budget Session so thatthey may not come in the waywhile the Bill is getting passed. Itmay be noted that some of theMLAs supporting Jagan wantedto go to Court for getting disqual-ified. Taking all these into consid-eration there is every scope thatthey might be expelled.

Disqualification petitions arepending aga inst 17 MLAs, who vio-lated the pa r ty whip during therecent vote of confidence on thefloor of the ho use. Sixteen areCongress MLAs and one from PRP,all loyal to Kadapa MP YS JaganMohan Reddy, violated the whipduring the trust vote against thegovernment recently.

They were there, lined upneatly, shipshape and shiny. The golden rays that filtered

in through the tree leaves madethem more beautiful. Men whowere on the premises were lost inadmiration for this bevy of metal-lic beauties. If they forget theirflames for a while, they may be for-given, for they were in the pres-ence of beauty that withers notwith age. And curiously, there werenot many of the fairer sex on thespot: perhaps they may haveforseen the situation.

There were 30 vintage carsand 70 vintage bikes on displayon Thursday at Lumbini Park aspart of the Vintage Car and BikeRally that is held on Republic

Day and Independence Dayevery year.

Owners stood by their ‘babies’well-dressed flashing smiles. When someone came up to themand asked about their prized ones, some seemed like they were intro-ducing a supermodel girlfriend;few almost flew into a rage whenadmirers accidently touched theirbeloveds while posing and gettingphotos clicked.

The rank of bikes boasted oflegends such as BSA, Norton,Triumph, Royal Enfield and Jawa.In cars, there were Austins, Hin -dustans, and Fiats. Apart from thisthere were Willys jeeps and a cou-ple of parachute cycles — thosefrom the days of World Wars — too.

One would say it’s a costlyaffair keeping these vehicles ship-shape. It’s a given that for many

owners of vintage cars, money isno object. They would go to anyextent to keep their babes hale andhearty. But many owners disagreethat maintenance is a problem. Infact, most of them retain thesevehicles because it’s zero mainte-

nance. “I just change the oil, refuelthe tank and check the tyres —that’s it. My BSA (1938 model) hasnever let me down,” said Mir HadiHussain. “And I use it daily.” Thisbike is so sophisticated that it hassuspension regulators: a rider maychange the level of suspensiondepending upon how good or badthe road is — something which amodern bike can rarely boast of.

“If my grandfather or myfather had been alive, they wouldbe taking medicine daily,” saidHussain, who also owns a vintagecar that dates back to 1919. “Butmy machines… never.”

But aren’t getting spares a bittough? “Yes, but these machinesare engineered so well that goingspare-hunting does not happenthat often,” said Ram Karan, exec-utive committee member of theDeccan Heritage Automobile

Association, which started thisevent 10 years ago.

The rally came into being aftersome of the organisers who hadbeen abroad were inspired by vin-tage vehicle museums in foreigncountries. Hyderabad is yet tohave one. The organisers havebeen trying for it.

“We have talked with thetourism department and theyseem to be keen,” said Anirudh, secretary, DHAA. “Mayor Moham -med Majid Hussain also seemedpositive about the need for a placeto showcase these classics,” headded. The mayor looked verypleased when he was takenaround shown these beauties onwheels. “This is my first time I haveever been to a show like this,” heconfessed. “It’s amazing.”

Would he like to collect one?“Sure.”

Sudeshna [email protected]

The City is growing geographi-cally and demographically, but the roads are in a shame-ful state, thanks to the

authorities who allow shoppingcomplexes and other commercialestablishments freedom to misusepublic road for obvious reasons.

Most of the City’s well knownshopping complexes do not have anyparking space, and these are all well-known brands. The City’s famous

shopping areas like Himayat Nagar,Patny, Begumpet, Trimul ghe rry,Banjara Hills Road number 1 and 2,Jubliee Hills Road number 36, KBRPark stretch and Swanaplok com-plex, which host big brands, do nothave any parking arrangements.

Due to lack of proper parkingfacilities, the customers are facinghuge problems. They are compelledto park on the road meant for trafficand this result in traffic jam andsometimes their vehicles gettingtowed away. It’s now a common sightto see that shoppers come with somehelping hand to sit in the vehicle toprevent their vehicles ending up inthe traffic police station.

“All these big stores in the Citydon’t have parking facilities. We haveto park our vehicle on the road. Till Ifinished shopping, I was tensed asour car was not in a safe place,” saysS Nair, a mass communication stu-dent. These stores ask the first cus-tomers to park in the little spaceavailable and the remainder is asked

to park on the road. Compoundingthe problem, the GHMC has recentlytaken over some roadside parkingslots and charge customers for park-ing. However, this has been a remedyworse than the problem becausenow the authority itself is blockingroad meant for traffic. But, the sameGHMC did not insist on the commer-cial establishment to provide parking

space. Why? All agree on this thing:corruption.

“As the parking woesincreased we collaborated

with the traffic police andmade a little portion of

the roads as GHMC parking area. Weconverted some area into parkingspace,” says Santos, estate officer,GHMC. There are in all 170 parkinglots in the City.

Big brand managers say they arebranching out to buildings com-pletely owned by them and once thathappen they could use the basementfor customers’ parking. The rentedpremises do not allow them muchleeway, managers say.

“We have a basement, but othersuse it, so we ask our customers topark on the road. Very soon we willbe moving out to the opposite build-ing which has parking space for carsand also we can use the basement,”said manager Feroz Mohmmed, gen-eral manager, Pantaloons BegumpetBranch.

Prudhvi Raju [email protected]

It is election time in the US of A.The ‘state of the union’ speechof Barrack Obama had its dose

of antipathy to American compa-nies outsourcing jobs.

India Inc. asserted that theywere creating jobs and not usurp-ing them – refer the observationsof Vineet Nayar of HCL, AzimPremji of Wipro at WorldEconomic Forum (WEF) at Davosand even Mahindra Satyam.

Elections are slated forNovember.

The major concern is his callfor immediate enactment of thetax plan. The City has aroundthree lakh employees who aredirectly dependent on the IT andITES industries. These industriesalso created employment for ninelakh people such as securityguards, taxi drivers, catering, etc.

Would these jobs be at stakewith Obama’s proposed policy?Nobody is sure, but industry feelsit wouldn’t affect much. Butemployees have their owndoubts. Skilled staffers are willingto go abroad to work, though.

Dependence on outsourcingdiffers from company to the com-pany. However, on an average 60per cent of their business is beingoutsourced from USA. The indus-try gradually reduced this num-ber from 90 per cent in last fiveyears by moving over to countrieslike Russia, Europe and SouthAmerica after recession; said KHarikumar, Executive Director, ITand ITES Industry Association ofAP (ITsAP).

Even though, there is an 8.5per cent of unemployment, thereis a dearth of skilled human reso -urces in USA for IT and ITES jobs.

Education is also extremelyexpensive to create adequate hu -m an resources. India adds valueto the business by providingskilled manpower, low salaries, and 24-hour work cycle in differ-ent shifts.

The companies also want to

be with the consumers forresearch and development andalso create appropriate servicesto the local people, he said.

Talking about Obama’s state-ment, Harikumar said it would hitthe American companies likeIBM, Accenture and Microsoftoperating here.

However, Obama’s statementis politically motivated and didnot have any details on how

much tax would be levied on theprofits of the companies. “It is tooearly to comment, but I believeeven after tax, the costs of operat-ing would be lower in India. Theyare already discouraging Indianemployees to work for Indiansoftware companies in USA byvisa rejections and delay,” he said.

There is an enormous costbenefit for software companiesby operating from India. Startingsalaries for high-end jobs in ITindustry would be anywherebetween $30,000 (`15 lakhs) to$50,000 (`25 lakhs) in the USA.

The same professional’ssalary ranges from `1.5 lakhs-`9lakhs in India. On top of the CTC,the healthcare benefits are alsohugely expensive in USA, whichranges from 20- 25 per cent ofthe salary. But it is five per cent ofthe salary in India. It can comedown to three per cent with anincrease in salary. The cost ofhuman resource is six timeshigher in USA compared toIndia, said JA Chowdary, co-Chairman, FICCI, AndhraPradesh State Council.

“Obama cannot control theindustry. It is the cost benefit ratio

that decides to drive outsourcingbusiness to India or not. There isalso need to provide tax incenti -ves by the government based onthe tax breaks provided by USA tonullify the effect,” Chowdaryadded. The IT employees are con-fident in the city. Obama issued asimilar statement two years agobut industry continued to grow.IT industry in the City is strongwith a lot of openings from vari-ous major IT companies, said ChRaghurama Raju, SeniorConsultant, Hitachi Consulting.

The costs to produce a qualityapplication with research anddevelopment (R&D) of productand give 24/7 support servicewould be several times higher inthe USA than in India, saidHarshitha, a consultant in Oil andGas practice in a big IT firm.

The costs of software applica-tions would be many times high-er than what they are now byoperating in USA. If such a thinghappens, that will not only affectthe IT industry but all the indus-tries that are dependent on IT,said Arif, a project manager ontelecom practice with an ITmajor.

We are invincible: IT crowd

n Companies will not get the35 per cent tax deductionsfor moving their operationsabroad.

n Companies moving theiroperations back to the USwill get a tax rebate of 20per cent. This lures the com-panies back.

n Make companies pay a mini-mum tax for profits and jobsoverseas (quantum not spec-ified)

n The proceeds of such taxeswill be spent on manufactur-ing in USA.

Shortage of vehicleparksI fully empathise with vehicle owners of the

city on their grouse over parking facili-ties. While the number of vehicleskeeps increasing, space to park themis shrinking. Is it not the duty of theadministration of the city to ensurethis basic facility? Don’t their advis-ers enlighten them on the need forspace for vehicle owners to park

these ever increasing tax earners? Or isthe government only too happy to create asituation from which it can milk even morerevenue in the form of fines? Prevent, deartraffic police, and not capitalise on disorder.

Parking problemsI read your story on how park-ing has turned out to bea major cause of concernfor car owners and busi-nessmen across the city.Leave along parking spaces, what this city really needs isan elaborate plan to regulatethe traffic conditions at differ-ent points of time. Every evening, the entireblock from Secunderabad to Hi-Tech City getschoked with traffic and I can’t imagine the sit-uation in crowded areas like Koti andAmeerpet. It’s quite sad that infrastructure, required to accommodate the ever growingnumber of vehicles in the city, is pathetic.

Somewhere in Malaysia, a family weepswith relief. In Haditha in Iraq, citizenscry out for justice. In the hallways ofpower in Ankara and Paris bureaucrats

haggle over what constitutes genocide. Theone common strain that ties the above threescenes is the fact that all the victims wereinnocent. They were not soldiers fighting awar; they were not insurgents resisting occu-pying forces; they were parents and children, husbands and wives, sons and daughters.

On Tuesday, Staff Sergeant Frank Wuterichwas told he would serve no time behind barsfor his part in the 2005 massacre of 24 civil-ians in the Iraqi town of Haditha. He was theonly soldier accused in the horrific incident. As this paper reported on Wednesday, the USarmed forces have a rather chequered recordwhen it comes to killing civilians in battle (MyLai was the most infamous before Hadithaand Mamoudhiya), but then again, can anyarmy say that their collateral damage did notinclude children and the elderly?

On Wednesday the British governmentfinally allowed relatives of the 24 unarmedMalays killed in 1948 by British forces inBatang Kali, access to hitherto confidentialinvestigation papers into the killing describedas the ‘British My Lai’. It’s a small step, but forfamilies that need closure, it is a gigantic one.

There are wars being fought all across theglobe. We know of the big ones; the ones thatget the TV coverage; the ones where anchorsin flak jackets shout above the perceived dinof an artillery barrage. On these ‘reality war’fronts the skies are filled with state-of-the-artcombat aircraft and drones, the seas feel thewake of guided-missile destroyers and aircraftcarriers, and the tanks that rumble across theground were built in the last 20 years.

But there are other theatres of battlewhere the protagonists wield machetes, notguns; where the fear of rape and torture over-rides any sense of doom inspired by thesound of creaky artillery and Cold Warweaponry. There are no TV crews here, noAnderson Coopers and John Simpsons, all

that resides here is the blood of innocents.Spreading fear and panic through a local

population has been a vital tool in warfarefrom the days of the ancients: From theVikings berserker rage and a conquistador’slethal cross, to the firebombing of Dresden, and the atomic bombs over Japan; war isabout terror, inasmuch as terrorism is.

There have been those in military circleswho had enough, who went against theirtraining and defied superiors, either directlyor through a covert operation. Field Marshal

Erwin Rommel was forced to consume poisonbecause he attempted to stop Hitler and a warhe knew his beloved country could never win;Bradley Manning faces the full brunt of theAmerican military legal system for Wikileaks. All they wanted was to stop the killing.

Will Sergeant Wuterich dream of the facesof the dead as he sleeps the sleep of the free?He might. But the families he destroyed willlive the nightmare every waking hour.

In an Armistice Day speech in 1948, USGeneral Omar Bradley said: “The world hasachieved brilliance without conscience. Oursis a world of nuclear giants and ethicalinfants. We know more about war than weknow about peace, more about killing than weknow about living.”

In the 64 years since then, the world’smilitaries have continued to kill innocentpeople without so much as a backwardglance at the human debris. The world haschanged, but our lust for carnage never will. Our one constant is bloody, and that is thehuman condition.

Neonataljaundice iscommon

Dr Kiran Krishnamurti

My sister delivered a baby girl threedays ago and she has been havingjaundice for the last 2 days. I haveheard that jaundice in the newbornbaby happens because of a differ-ence in the mother’s and baby’sblood groups. However, my sisterand her baby are both opposition.Right now her jaundice level is 14and we have been giving her pho-totherapy. Is there any cause forworry? Do we need to change thediet of the mother? Will it affect thebrain?Neonatal jaundice is a fairly com-mon occurrence. Yes, it is true thatit happens because of an incompat-ibility of the blood groups of moth-ers and child. However there arefactors other than that.

Rh(+ or-) and ABO that need tomatch. Neonatal jaundice can becaused by an incompatibility ofthese and it is likely to be milder. Alevel of 14mg% Serum Bilirubin atDay 3 is no cause for worry. It willsettle down. There is absolutely nothreat of brain damage with thislevel. Kernicterus (ie bilirubin dis-coloring and damaging brain cells)happens at a level above 20-22mg%.

There is no connection betweenthe mother’s diet and the baby’sjaundice. She should be breast fedas often as possible and fed withmaybe a few teaspoons of boiledand cooled water when she is onphototherapy.

Sprains can occur due tomany reasons such as askid or slip on a wetfloor, a fall on your wrist,

jamming a finger or while play-ing various sports such as foot-ball, basketball, gymnasticsand volleyball.

Is it a sprain or atear?

A common confusionamong many of us isbetween a sprain and atear. Ask anyone what thedifference is and we usu-ally get a confused reply.A sprain in simple termsis an injury to the liga-ment. Ligament is a bandwhich connects the differentjoints in the body. Ligamentsoccur in all parts of the body.

According to Dr M HariSharma, consultantorthopaedic surgeon, ApolloHospital, Hyderguda, “Sprain isa non-medical term. A sprainoccurs when a ligament isinjured. The tear is placedunder three grades. A mildinjury which is usually a spraincomes under grade 1, a slighttear is grade 2. When the liga-ment is completely torn it iscalled grade 3.”

The most common liga-ment injuries occur in theankle (commonly known

“twisted ankle”) or the knee.Extreme pressure on

the ligament orstretching of theligament may bethe cause of theinjury.

A ligament tear ora fracture?

“In the early stages peoplewith both a ligament tear and afracture have immense pain. But a ligament tear usually

recedes within a few days. Incase of a fracture, a clickingsound is heard at the time ofthe injury,” mentions DrSharma. Dr Sharma advisesthat a person should visit adoctor after an injury so that hecan assess whether it is a sim-ple sprain or a more serioustear or fracture.

Sports-related tearsand sprains

Ligament injuries are alsovery common in sports people. The first kind is very commonin footballers. It is known asthe anterior cruciate ligamenttear in which the ligamentinside the knee is torn andbecomes unstable.

This may require physio-therapy and in some seriouscases surgery. The second is acommon injury among crick-eters and tennis players. It isknown as tennis elbow. BothSania Mirza and SachinTendulkar have been in thenews for having suffered from a

tennis elbow. It occurs due tothe strenuous overuse of theelbow. It is commonly associat-ed with playing who play tennisand other racquet sports, though it can happen to almostanyone. It makes it difficult for aperson to even fold or move hisor her elbow. For a tennis elbowthe person undergoes physio-therapy and is given pain killers. In certain cases injections aregiven or a surgery may beadvised.

TreatmentThe best treatment for a

sprain or a tear is rest. “Restwill help the tear or sprainsheal. Crepe bandage or Plasterof Paris (POP) bandage may beused around the injured area toimmobilize the sprain and pro-vide support. For a mild spraina regular bandage is used butin severe cases a POP bandageis used.” Ice or cold compresswraps can be used to provideinstant pain relief.

Asthma is aform of allergy

Postnoon News

“Asthma is a form of allergy inwhich a person’s immunesystem recognises non-

infectious parts like dust, pollen asallergens and causes the airway tonarrow down. While there are no spe-cific studies, nearly 10 in 10,000 peo-ple are affected by asthma,” says Dr YGopi Krishna, consultant pulmonolo-gist at Mythri Hospital.

Since factors like dust, pollen andpollution are triggers for asthma, theincidence of the ailment has been ris-ing with the increase in pollution lev-els in our cities. “Also people’s immu-nity levels are coming down due tovarious lifestyle factors, poor foodhabits and poor exposure duringchildhood. It is no wonder then thatthe incidence of asthma is on the risethese days,” says Dr Krishna, adding,“While it can’t be cured it can certainlybe controlled and prevented. The twomainstays of treatment are coun-selling on the precaution to be takenand inhalers.”

Inhalers, says the doctor, are thefirst line of treatment for asthma.“Besides these are better than tabletsand other forms of oral medicationsince the dosage is very low comparedto them. So even inhalers withsteroids and bronchodilators are per-fectly safe as they are administered invery low doses. Alternately there arealso tablets and injections availablefor treatment of asthma,” he says.

Monitoring lung function isessential for asthma patients to effec-tively control the ailment. “They canuse a peak flow meter either at thehospital or at home regularly or get aspirometry done at the hospital oncea year to determine how well thelungs are functioning. Doctors canalter treatment based on these read-ings,” says Dr Krishna.

“Asthma during pregnancy can berather tricky as if it is not managed itcan lead to complications like growthretardation. But inhalers are a greatway to handle asthma in pregnantwomen since the dosage is so low andthe drugs don’t cross the placentalbarrier,” he says.

risk withfood

fried inolive oil

No cardiac

Food fried in olive or sun-flower oil is not linked toheart disease or prematuredeath, but the same is not

true of solid or reused oils. Whileeating lots of fried food canincrease some heart disease riskfactors such as high blood pres-sure, high cholesterol and obesity,a link between fried food andheart disease has not been fullyinvestigated.

So the study authors, led by

Pilar Guallar-Castillon professorat the Autonomous University ofMadrid, Spain, surveyed thecooking methods of 40,757adults aged 29 to 69 years overan 11-year period. None of themhad heart disease when the studybegan, the journal bmj.comreports.

Trained interviewers askedparticipants about their diet andcooking methods. Fried food wasdefined as food for which frying

was the only cooking methodused. Questions were also askedabout whether food was fried, battered, crumbed or sauteed, according to an Autonomousstatement.

The participants’ diet wasdivided into ranges of fried foodconsumption, the first quarterrelated to the lowest amount offried food consumed and thefourth indicated the highestamount. During the follow-up

there were 606 events linked toheart disease and 1,134 deaths.

The authors conclude, “In aMediterranean country whereolive and sunflower oils are themost commonly used fats for fry-ing, and where large amounts offried foods are consumed both atand away from home, no associa-tion was observed between friedfood consumption and the risk ofcoronary heart disease or death.”

Not all bakery products are healthy

Dr Suneetha Sapur

I have a weakness for freshlybaked biscuits that are avail-able in bakeries in Hyderabad. However, I’ve been advised toavoid them as they are not veryhealthy. But I don’t understandwhy? Are these biscuits high infat?

Unfortunately, the fooditems that are tasty are notalways very healthy. Yes bakery

biscuits have a high fat contentand are also prepared withmaida and sugar. If you look atit 95 per cent of it contains onlycalories and no other nutrient ispresent in significant amounts. So it is not healthy and excesseating can lead to weight gain.

Apart from high fat contentand empty calories most of thebakery biscuits are preparedwith vanaspati. Vanaspati isprepared by hydrogenation ofvegetable oils. During hydro-genation, the liquid oilsbecome solid because themono and polyunsaturatedfatty acids are converted, into

saturated fatty acids and iso-mers called fatty acids. iegroundnut oil or sunflower oilare hydrogenated so that theybecome solid like ghee or but-ter. Vanspati is used as a substi-tute for ghee in cooking and thepreparation of bakery products, sweets and snacks. The hydro-genation process producestrans fatty acids, which are notgood for health and it may leadto heart diseases and varioushealth problems. Therefore, itis essential to limit the intakeof bakery biscuits. Ideally, the intake of trans fattyacids should not exceed 2per cent of energy intake.

Big girl’sdon’t cry

Women should not cry atwork, could have wellbeen one of the Ten

Commandments. It's almost liketelling a man 'pink is not hiscolour'. The moment your well-kept guard drops at work and themoment the tear gates open, thereyou are — you can kiss your careeradvancement goodbye.

These rules go for almost allwomen, unless the woman inquestion is an actor and she earnsher career advancement throughemotions.

A recent incident at the work-place forced me to think about thispredicament. The feeling of shameat being caught with your guarddown is so overpowering that mostwomen when they want to cry atwork run for the nearest rest roomor a secluded spot to release theflood gates. Way out of the reach ofa male colleague.

Strong declarations made bywomen all over, come floodingback to me. We believe in being thealpha woman; she is strong, inde-pendent and is able to tackle anyand every problem at work. Is thisthe reason why women should notcry at work?

People scrutinise a woman'sbehaviour in male-dominatedenvironments, searching for anysign of weakness. Given thedemands of such workplaces, anysort of emotional display can sug-gest weakness and therefore, women are advised to avoid cryingwhen upset.

Showing emotions at workother than the occasional smile orlaugh is taboo. Blow your top andthere you are, branded as rude andmoody, and if you cry — then forthe next two days, office corridorgossip will echo with only your actof weakness and then every otherstatement will end like 'I hope youare not going to cry, if I tell youthis'.

So now take to tearing up, ifyou must, it still shows your abilityto control your emotions. If it hasto, let it be a trickle, not a flood.

incident that made her thesaviour of hundreds of needyfolk, “One day, a woman walksup to me and says, ‘Oh Amma! You have asked us so manyquestions and we haveanswered them. We hope itwill help someday, but rightnow what our village needs ismedical help and care, don’tyou think that will be morehelpful?’

“That was a simple thingthat struck me like a bolt oflightning and from the next daymy group put a table there for afew hours to extend whateverlittle medical help we could.

Now we have a clinic atMahbubnagar that treats over200 patients a week.”

Listening to this, we couldnot help but wonder wasn’tbeing an expat a challengehere? And pat comes the reply,“Absolutely! For some strangereason most people think it iseasy for foreigners, but it’s notthe case. There are times whenI am faced with what I like tocall ‘reverse racism’.” Shelaughs, and continues, “It wasalso a challenge because when Icame to Hyderabad 35 yearsago the caste system was verystrong. I had people ‘guiding’me to help only certain com-munities. I also had peopledoubting why a foreigner wouldwant to help the poor or down-trodden.”

To what motivates her to dothis kind of work, she says, “Istarted when I was very young, and my first job was to teachphysically challenged people toswim, and I realised how littleefforts can change many lives. So now, I provide health careservices in villages for women, children and the elderly. our Imlibund office is in dangerof closing down. Local goonsharass us, so do junior level offi-cers of the organisation who tryto extort money and havethreatened to throw us out. Weare also fighting a legal battle forthe same.” You can see thedetermination in her and it’sadmirable to see her willing togo all out to fight this selflessbattle.

JEAN PAUL GAULTIER'S

TRIBUTE TOUNIQUE AMYWINEHOUSE

PARIS: There is no mistakingthe look of the first model atJean Paul Gaultier's coutureshow on Wednesday, the bee-hive hair and thick eyeliner, black skirt and brassiere visibleunder a white top.

"Amy Winehouse was a truestyle icon," Gaultier toldreporters backstage after theshow, conceived as a tribute tothe soul singer, six monthsafter her untimely death.

"What she stands for aboveall, is uniqueness. Both in musicand the way she dressed, shemixed a great many influ-ences" to create her style, hesaid.

Playing on the late star'sstyle, rooted in the 1950s and1960s, Gaultier sent out corsets— a staple of his — as well asbustiers and layered brassieres, mixing bold colours with black.

The French designer tookcare to keep his tribute subtle— with nothing too literal —and Winehouse's voice rang outonly at the very end, blendingwith the sound of a cappellaband on stage.

Stars lined the front row, from the Grande dames ofFrench cinema CatherineDeneuve and CharlotteRampling to the US rocker BethDitto, or RnB singer Shy'm.

Top models of the momentKarlie Kloss or MilagrosSchmoll dazzled the roomwrapped in hooded capes ofbillowing chiffon, or a suitmatching asymmetric jacketand a man's pinstriped pants —tailored to a woman's curves.

Hand-crafted artistry wason ample display, like in thethousands of pieces of glitterembroidery on a violet-bluecoat, worn over a pleatedwhite skirt and plant-green topmade entirely from sequins.

Purple pearl embroideryadorned a jacket, worn over anelectric blue chiffon dress, while pointed-tipped bustierswere entirely embroideredwith stones.

After the wedding dress —a corset-gown in powder pink— the models returned withouttheir skirts, revealing thesophisticated lingerie under-neath, with a black veil overthe face like Spanish widows.

"It's not a funeral," smiledGaultier afterwards. "They arehappy brides." AFP

LEADER OF THE FREE WORLD?Come November and either Newt Gingrich or Mitt Romney could be sittingin the White House. Brigitte Dusseau profiles two contrasting characters

They hail from the same genera-tion and the same Republicanparty, but Newt Gingrich andMitt Romney provide a starkstudy in contrasts ahead of next

week’s make-or-break Florida primary. The two politicians — top contenders in

the battle to become their party’s presi-dential candidate — offer dramatically dif-ferent temperaments, campaign styles, and even in their life narratives.

Gingrich, 68, was born to a teenagemother who divorced his father while hewas still a baby and married a US service-man. Gingrich’s itinerant childhood onvarious US military bases included over-seas stints in France and Germany.

By contrast, Romney, 64, a monied scionof privilege, was the son of millionaireMormon businessman George Romney.

The elder Romney became governor ofMichigan, US housing secretary of stateand chairman of the American MotorsCorporation.

George Romney tried and failed in hisbid to become US president, becoming atop contender for the 1968 Republicannomination before losing out to RichardNixon. Now Mitt, who was elbowed out forthe 2008 nomination by Senator JohnMcCain, gets his shot at the White House.

Gingrich, a former speaker of the Houseof Representatives who has surged to thefront of statewide polls one week before

the January 31 primary here, has a pugna-cious style, and is known to verbally pum-mel opponents into submission with arazor sharp intellect.

As an academic and college professor,Gingrich had a proclivity toward boldpolitical schemes and “big ideas” that ledhim to engineer his audacious plan for theRepublican takeover of Congress in 1994.

But in one of the frequent knocks againsthim, Gingrich is also criticised asgrandiose and overbearing, given to bom-bast and bluster.

Impulsive even as an adolescent,Gingrich decided at the age of 15 that hewould study history and politics after avisit to Verdun, France.

He followed that chosen path, trying andfailing twice in his bid to be elected to theHouse, before succeeding on the third try.

Gingrich represented his Georgia districtfor several years before being electedspeaker by his fellow lawmakers — a posthe held from January 1995 to January 1999,when he was forced out.

His fall, facing a rebellion after amidterm poll rout and ethics violations, was as spectacular as his rise had beenimpressive.

Even after his ouster, Gingrich neverreally left the world of politics, creatingand chairing several policy think-tanks,and taking on work as a highly paid con-sultant for the mortgage giant Freddie

Mac, which is seen as complicit in the USfinancial meltdown of 2008.

Where Gingrich runs hot, Romney blowscold. He is steady, patrician, even aristo-cratic. But he is often parodied as unexcit-ing and overly studied, every bit thetrained lawyer and businessman.

With his silver spoon and Ivy Leagueeducation, Romney amassed a fortune atthe head of Bain Capital during the 1980sand 1990s, and now is said to be worthabout $250 million.

That would make him one of the richestmen ever in the White House — if he getsthe nomination and defeats PresidentBarack Obama in November’s election.

Romney failed at his first attempt to gainelective office, when he tried to unseat lib-eral icon Ted Kennedy from the US Senate.

After being elected governor ofMassachusetts for a term, he tasted elec-tion defeat again, when he lost out toMcCain for the 2008 Republican presiden-tial nomination.

He now faces an unlikely challenge fromGingrich deemed by some too intemperateand controversial to get the nomination.

But Romney — from all appearances thevery picture of everything a candidateshould be, down to his graying templesand ram-rod straight bearing — is seen bymany as being too stiff, too perfect.

Taking those criticisms on board, in adeparture from four years ago, the candi-

date has taken to wearing his hair a bitmore mussed and his shirts a bit rumpled,to give himself more of the air of an aver-age guy.

There are also lingering doubts in con-servative circles that the former governorof liberal Massachusetts really shares theirviews on hot-button issues such as gaymarriage and abortion.

Another Romney vulnerability is hisMormon religion, his bedrock faith, butone which is seen by many Americans asstrange and cult-like.

Gingrich, a convert to his wife’s Catholicfaith, is the more conservative of the two, harping frequently about his adherence tothe principles of Ronald Reagan, the latepresident.

Romney is criticised as lacking coreprinciples, and has shown a willingness toadapt his views those of the electoratewhen it is convenient to do so.

There is no greater contrast between thetwo men than in how they have conductedtheir personal lives.

Romney, an irreproachable family manwho has been married for 42 years to hishigh school sweetheart, has five grownsons and 16 grandchildren.

By contrast, Gingrich is married to histhird wife, Callista, a former congressionalaide more than two decades his junior, who was his paramour while he was stillmarried to wife number two.

Shankarsticks to the original version rightfrom the word go and thanks to someinspired performances from the leadcast, the film is almost as good as the original version.

There are one toomany actors inBollywood whowould like to be cast

in the roles of that played byAmitabh Bachchan. Hebreathed an originality intothe character, the kind thatwas impossible to imitate.Comparisons are inevitableand Karan Malhotra realisedthat early on and so hedecided to take a freshapproach. With the film’stitle being retained, it is stillexclusively different.

The movie begins withthe events that lead to thedeath of the hero’s father andthe young son and pregnantmother travelling to Mumbaito find a new life. Vijay

Dinanath Chauhan (HrithikRoshan) then lives only to goback to his village inMandwa to avenge hisfather’s death from the druglord Kancha Cheena (SanjayDutt). In Mumbai, Vijaybefriends Rauf Lala (RishiKapoor) who eventuallybecomes his godfather incrime. Hrithik’s version ofVijay portrays him as calcu-lated, cold-blooded and onewithout any moralistic con-flicts. He has little dialoguesbut mainly his expressionsdo the talking. For debutantdirector, Karan Malhotra, themovie is more of a tributerather than a remake. Alongwith co-writer Ila Bedi Datta,Malhotra did away with a lot

of characters that were pre-sent in the original film likethat of Mithun Chakraborty,Goga Kapoor, Sharat Saxenaand Deepak Shirke toinevitably bend the plot tofocus more on Hrithik, Duttand Kapoor. The originaldialogues have been recreat-ed fashionably with both theepic introduction of VijayDinanath Chauhan as well asDr Harivanshrai Bachchan’spoem inspiring the film’stitle have been executed withpanache and dignity.

The background score byAjay-Atul seems to perfectlyblend in with the film’sscreenplay, with ChikniChameli and Deva ShreeGanesha making it to top of

the charts.Kaali (Priyanka Chopra),

is his best friend and loveinterest but fails to find astrong foothold in the film’sscript. Hrithik does morethan justice to Vijay and weare all glad that he didn’t tryand copy Big B. Dutt asKancha Cheena does send afew shivers with his villain-ous look and rippling mus-cles. But among all of thesecharacters, its Rishi Kapoorwho deserves a special forhis power-packed perfor-mance as Lala. Academy givesnod to onlinevoting for 2013OscarsThe Academy of

Motion Picture Artsand Sciencesannounced onWednesday that it willbegin using an ‘elec-tronic voting system’starting with the 85thAcademy Awards in2013. Until thisannouncement, theAcademy has alwayscollected ballots bymail. Those ballotswere then counted byhand by a small teamof PricewaterhouseCoopers accountants.

But now theAcademy will teamwith the firm EveryoneCounts to develop anonline voting systemfor next year’s Oscars. Over the next year, theAcademy will ‘under-take a rigorous securityand user-acceptancetesting process.’ A chiefconcern will be ensur-ing that the systemcannot be compro-mised by hackers.PricewaterhouseCoopers will still beresponsible for ulti-mately tabulating andverifying the results. The move to online willhelp speed up the vot-ing process for theOscars.

Armie Hammer,who’s currentlysaddling up to

play the title role againstJohnny Depp in TheLone Ranger, has beenarrested for marijuanapossession in Texas, according to reports.

The 25-year-oldactor, who came toprominence playing theWinklevoss twins in TheSocial Network, wasbusted in Sierra Blanca,Texas, on November 30,after police found three

cookies and one brown-ie containing medicinalmarijuana.

Which is a bummerfor Hammer — who, ironically, played law-man Clyde Tolson in lastyear’s J. Edgar — butperhaps the actor cantake consolation in thefact that he’s not alone.Hammer was arrested inthe same town whereWillie Nelson and, morerecently, Snoop Doggwere busted on potcharges.

Before Demi Moore was hos-pitalised, the actress “washaving what seemed like

“Concerned friends called911,” the source says.

The actress, 49, is being treat-ed for what her rep says is“exhaustion,” as friends privatelyexpress concerns about her

How to Play KakuroKakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is alsosuitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, wellhere are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike insudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells likein a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells willcontain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in therow or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.

Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly:In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you

will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. Thismeans that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14.Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is donethrough elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work outthe answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid com-binations, and hence the answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

MELBOURNE: Maria Sha ra -pova Thursday revealed how shefeared injury may have endedher career after her revival tookanother step forward when shereached the Australian Openfinal.

The Russian former champi-on proved she was firmly backamong the best with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 over Petra Kvitova, avengingher defeat to the Czech in lastyear’s Wimbledon final and set-ting up a title match withVictoria Azarenka.

The elated Sharapova, whoraised both arms in triumphafter the win, said it showed shecould once again compete at thehighest level after shouldersurgery in 2008 and a series oflater injuries.

The 24-year-old Russian wonthe Australian Open in 2008, the

last of her three grand slamtitles, before the operation kepther off court for nine months.

“It means so much to be backin a grand slam final, a stage Ihave been to before a few yearsago here,” Sharapova said. “It’snice to get that far again af ter los-ing quite early in the last coupleof years. It means a lot to me.

“I played someone that’s justhad really great results and hasbeaten me the last couple oftimes. I just really wanted ittoday.” And Sharapova, whocould also return to world num-ber one if she lifts the trophy onSaturday, said there were timeswhen she thought she may not

be able to make itback to the top of the sport.

“As positive as I always try tobe, you always question whatyou’re doing, obviously, becausesometimes things work out andsometimes they don’t,” she said.“And especially just with theshoulder I think it was — I knewsome examples of some peoplethat did not quite recover fromsurgery and that was a littlefrightening, but I really had nooption.” AFP

MELBOURNE: Roger Federerinsisted his dismal record againstRafael Nadal did not play on hismind Thursday after he crashedout of the Australian Open semi-finals at the hands of his long-time nemesis.

The Swiss maestro holds arecord 16 grand slam titles but theSpanish world number two has ahold over him on the biggeststage, winning eight of their 10clashes in majors.

It was the same old story onThursday as Nadal, chasing his11th slam, battled back from a setdown to grind down his rival andset up a final against either topseed Novak Djokovic or AndyMurray.

Federer, 30, denied his recordagainst Nadal played on his mindwhen he went out on court, sayinghe felt the Spaniard raised hisgame in their meetings.

“It is what it is, you know. Atthe end I care about my titles, if I’mhappy or not as a person,” he said.

“Head-to-heads for me, Imean, are not the most important. If I beat Andre (Agassi) 10 times ina row or Lleyton (Hewitt) manytimes in a row, at the end of the day

I don’t care.“I remember the matches on

that given day, that I played wellagainst them or not, and I don’tremember the head-to-head thatmuch.”

Federer has not beaten Nadalin a grand slam since Wimbledonin 2007, with his only other victoryover the Spaniard coming at the AllEngland Club the previous year.He has never come from behind tobeat Nadal at a major.

“We have had good matchesover the years. I enjoy playing him.The crowd really gets into it, whichis nice. We have a lot of respect foreach other, which is good, too, Ithink,” Federer said. “We also playwell against each other. I alwaysthink he plays a bit better againstme than against other players.”

‘It’s okay’January 16 – January 29

“IF I BEAT ANDRE (AGASSI)10 TIMES IN A ROW ORLLEYTON (HEWITT) MANYTIMES IN A ROW, AT THE ENDOF THE DAY I DON’T CARE. IREMEMBER THE MATCHES ONTHAT GIVEN DAY, THAT IPLAYED WELL AGAINST THEMOR NOT.”

INDIA VS AUSTRALIA 30

Indians set forwhitewash

n The Indians are at the point of no return once again. The tentative and defensive approach proved to betheir downfall. Australia were well on their way tocomplete a well-deserved whitewash.n The dry wicket had got harder to bat on with thebounce getting lower. But it was not alarmingly dan-gerous. Australia lost five wickets while setting a tar-get of 500. The Indian bowling was much tighter butthe usual one four-ball per over allowed Australia toget ahead easily.n Virendra Sehwag gave India some hope with ahard-hit 62 off 53 balls. His aggressive approach wasrefreshing. But once Sehwag left, the same old prodand push tactics were back on display.n Rahul Dravid never looked comfortable. SachinTendulkar seemed to have fallen into a defensivemindset once again which meant that he did not lastlong.n The Australian bowlers were relentless. SpinnerNathan Lyon was allowed to bowl well due to theIndian batsmen’s lack of initiative. It made painfulwatching the same old story unfold once again.
