VOLKIES / GIMMIES – die twee woorde wat jaarliks alle Potchefstromers opgewonde, senuweeagtig en uitgesproke maak. Albei skole het deeglik voorberei vir hierdie spesiale dag. Die kompetisie gaan, soos gewoonlik, baie straf wees. Ons besef dat ons hierdie tradisie, van ‘n jaarlikse wintersportdag, moet koester. Goeie vriende van die veld af, dog gerekende opponent op die veld! Vir elke leerder, afrigter en ouers is dit mos die sporthoogtepunt van die jaar – geniet die geleentheid!
Volkskool wil graag elke persoon en instansie wat ‘n bydrae gelewer het om van hierdie sportdag ‘n besondere en aangename geleentheid te maak, bedank. Aan die personeel van FNB, wat hierdie pragtige reeks van “Classic Clashes” reël en finansieël ondersteun, baie welkom hier by Volkies. Ons het ook groot waardering vir Volkies se Beheerliggaam, personeel, leerders en ouers wat baie tyd en moeite agter die skerms insit om hierdie geleentheid kleur te gee en vlot te laat verloop.
Gedurende hierdie sportuidaging, waar die kompetisie straf gaan wees en emosies hoog gaan loop, wil ek aan elkeen teenwoordig ‘n aangename Volkie-Gimmienaweek toewens! Ek sluit af met die woorde van die tennislegende, Arthur Ashe.: “Die manier waarop jy sukses behaal, is dikwels belangriker as die sukses self.”

Elke jaar teen die einde Mei is daar ‘n besondere atmosfeer in Potchefstroom – dit is weer tyd vir Gimmie-Volkie naweek. Ons ding mee in ‘n verskeidenheid sporte met meer as dertig spanne.
Vir beide skole se leerders, personeel en ouers is dit belangrik om hulle beste te gee aangesien hierdie kompetisie reeds langer as 80 jaar bestaan. Verskeie oudleerders kom deel in die gebeure.
Die Saterdagaand word daar ook by beide skole in vleis- of wildsfees gehou om alles af te sluit.
Baie dankie aan Mnr Swart en sy personeel vir al die reëlings waar hulle vanjaar die gasheer is. Dankie aan al die borge, ondersteuners, skeidsregters, noodhulp, afrigters en spelers vir hulle bydrae.

“Dit is baie belangrik om kinders reeds van jongs af fisiek aktief te kry,” sê prof Monyeki. “Nie net ter wille van gebalanseerde liggaamlike ontwikkeling nie, maar ook om bepaalde gesondheidsrisiko’s te minimaliseer.
In dié opsig het navorsing uitgewys dat sommige ‘volwasse’ siektes reeds by kinders jonger as tien jaar kan begin ontwikkel. Chroniese hartsiektes is ’n voorbeeld hiervan.” Prof Monyeki beklemtoon die belangrikheid van sportdeelname reeds van jongs af. “Sport is belangrik vir ’n gesonde leefstyl,” sê hy. “En dit het nie net met die handhaaf van ’n gesonde gewig te doen nie, maar ook met die ontwikkeling van gesonde bene en spiere. Sportdeelname bevorder ook die kinders se selfbeeld en help hulle om die wêreld rondom hulle te ontdek.
“Dit skep dus op vele vlakke probleme as die gemiddelde kind sowat drie ure per dag voor die televisie deurbring. Dinge word ook nie makliker gemaak deur die gebrek aan fisieke aktiwiteite en sportdeelname op skoolvlak nie.
“Dit is ook bewys dat ’n onaktiewe leefstyl by ’n kind na sy volwasse jare
sal oorspoel. Daarby het ’n ongesonde leefstyl ’n ekonomiese impak – vir sowel die individu as die staat.”
Professor Monyeki sê dat dit belangrik is om deur voortgesette navorsing ’n bewustheid van ’n gesonde, aktiewe leefstyl by veral kinders te skep.
Ouers moet ook in dié opsig ’n voorbeeld stel. Die beste manier waarop ’n kind leer, is immers deur die ouers se voorbeeld.
Maak jou kinders aktief groot!Televisie, die internet, slimfone en al die ander tegnologiese wonders is van die grootste redes
waarom ’n groot aantal kinders deesdae vroeg-vroeg met gesondheidsprobleme worstel.Volgens prof andries monyeki van die Skool vir Biokinetika, Rekreasie en Sportwetenskap op die Potchefstroomkampus van die Noordwes-Universiteit (NWU), bevind die meeste Suid-Afrikaanse kinders hulle tans in “’n gevaarlike stadium van onaktiwiteit”. Volgens hom is kinders
wat minder as tienduisend meter per dag stap, meer vatbaar vir chroniese gesondheidsprobleme soos hoë bloeddruk en hoë cholesterolvlakke. En loop hulle die wesenlike gevaar om met tipe twee-diabetes gediagnoseer te word.

There’s strong scientific evidence showing that carbohydrates help athletes perform harder for longer, even if it’s for less than an hour. There have also been tests done during real rugby training sessions showing that carbohydrate consumption improves the performance of drills and skills. So your main goal before a game is to start adequately fuelled and hydrated. Not only will this help you perform on game day, but the same approach can also help you get the most out of your training.
What to Eat BEforEhand (2-4 hours BEforE)Eating before exercise tops up the body’s carbohydrate stores, known as glycogen, and helps to maintain blood sugar levels which can improve performance. Your pre-event meal should be eaten 2 to 4 hours beforehand, so experiment with what works best for you. It should contain between 1to 200 grams of carbohydrates, depending on your size and how hard you work on the pitch. This pre-match meal should be low in protein, fibre and fat to minimise the risk of gastro-intestinal discomfort, which occurs due to the food being slowly digested.
What to drink BEforEhand (2-4 hours BEforE)Starting a game dehydrated can impair your performance. Here are some tips to make sure this doesn’t happen:
Ask yourself these questions in the hours leading up to exercise:• Am I thirsty?• Is my urine dark in colour?• Is my body weight noticeably lower than yesterday?
Answering “yes” to any of these questions may indicate inadequate hydration. here are some tips to ensure you start exercise hydrated:1. Slowly drink 5-7 ml fluid per kg of your body weight.2. Consuming foods or drinks that contain sodium (salt) will also help to stimulate thirst and retain the consumed fluids.3. Monitor your urine colour and volume as a simple indicator of hydration status – if your urine is dark in colour and low in volume you need to drink more water.
15 minutEs BEforE thE matchAs opportunities to consume energy and fluid are restricted to breaks in play, consuming carbohydrates shortly before exercise will start to meet the fuelling demands of the match.
The science doesn’t lie, and research has proved it: preparing before exercise can have a big impact on your performance. Simply put: the better you prepare, the better you’ll perform.
