What is Nanotechnology• Nanotechnology
focuses on characterization, fabrication and manipulation of biological and non-biological structures smaller than 100 nm.
Nano food technology
• Nano food technology is considered as one of the most promising area of scientific research and applications.
• "Nano food technology is here to stay and already forms the basis of a number of commercially available products" (IFST, 2006).

Potential Applications of Nanotechnology in Food
Industry• It is expected that
nanotchnology shall find uses in Food industry in the near future through several direct and indirect applications.
• As for indirect applications, the Food industry shall benefit from progress in other areas such as microelectronics, packaging materials and nano-biosensors.

• Marked progress has been achieved in nano-biosensors for the detection of different pathogens and some of them offer the possibility for detecting several pathogens in the same time.
• Several studies have showed the validity of these sensors in detecting pathogens and their toxins in Food products.
• This area will be one of the major areas in
nanotechnology applications in dairy industry in the near future.
• Several developments have been achieved in food packaging, particularly plastics containing oxygen barrier of nano-sized clay (Brody, 2006).
• These materials can be used in packaging of Food products especially those with long shelf-life.
