THERMOFORMING

My journey has taken me from someone who use to Draw and tinker with stuff & thought Design to be it, till the one Who want to bring about essential contribution to the Design Era. Since 2009 When I Got into Srishti School Of Art & Design I was keen to build something, During First Year I got my first opportunity to get my hands dirty on a life size sculpture as a group activity. The process was rigorous but it was the sparingly first moment when I felt attached to my work. Later in 2nd year I came across similar courses as Furniture design,Producta Day, Interaction stuff that helped me narrowing down to one discipline by the end of the year that was Product design. It has turned out to be a great choice but a challenging one too.

About My self

NIF (WashINg MachINe Nodd-e)

This project in collaboration with National Innovation Foundation (Ahmedabad) and Srishti School of Art Design & Technology (Bangalore)

The concept of Seesaw washing machine(Nodd-E) is an attempt to make the often laborious experience of washing more fun by combining it with activities that involve human energy yet in a less strenuous fun filled way.

Year - 2011 (6 month Project)

Group Members - 4

Contribution - Leading Designer

INItIal IteratIoNs

The initial form exploration of the washing machine was done keeping in mind the geometrical shape of the bucket, and the possible mechanism that could be worked out in a sturdy frame.

This phase also involved gathering information about the different mechanism as traditional butter churning, pulley & rope mechanism and taking inspiration from them.

study Model

Scaled down prototypes were made to understand how the machine will work, and identify problems. High Impact Plastic (HIP) was used to make these models.

The agitator bulky design could lead to excess material usage and increased production cost.

The oscillating motion of the agitator design does not generate enough force required for washing clothes.

Too less seating space arising from the shape of the agitator.

study Model (AnAlysis)Problems that were identified in the initial concept

VIrtual ModelINg

Technical drawings were used during modeling stage to realize the right proportions of the washing machine.

MaNuFacturINg Process

The prototype (Scale - 1:1) body frame was made from square, elliptical and circular metal pipes of different thickness. Nylons parts (Pulleys) were machined and plastic buckets was used for the main washing unit.

Individual Project

Year - 2012 /6 month

tuPPerWare (Water Storage)

The brief was to design a water dispenser fit for Indian Cluttered kitchens, after studying the user behaviour,& activities followed around drinking water storage system in Indian kitchens.

Individual Project

Year - 2012/ 6 month project

research

Interviews were taken of variety of families, from traditional to modern, and their behaviour was observed as to what all activities they do, while storing drinking water, Like (Cleaning , Filling , Refilling etc).Problems found were categorized and Design Interventions were listed in each category which further helped in concept development stage.

exPloratory Phase

Intense sketching was done during this phase keeping in mind the tupperware design language.Plenty of concepts were thought of and visualized few were chosen for further development. Details of the product was explored through cross sectional drawing , so to better understand the product functionality and integration of design.Water pumping mechanisms were also studied during this phase.

As the modern age designs moves forward, it has unheeded the cultural practices and objects of values, there has been a huge gap,Like if we see the modern water dispenser they do not have much connection to our cultural practices.

The G Dispenser is an effort to keep the age old tradition to store drinking water in copper vessel alive and fuse them with modern water dispenser systems, that make water healthy naturally.

user sceNarIo (graVIty dIsPeNser)

The dispenser can be easily filled with an attached pipe from aquaguard

Caster wheels at the bottom allow easy movement.

The container can be easily detached ,from the main stand, with the ring.

Convenient height allows the user to fill bottles and jugs

Lower Dispenser tap can beunscrewed ,which allows easy cleaning.

Detachable copper dispenser.allow the user to wash it properly.

Puchuk dIsPeNser

The Puchuk dispenser was designed keeping in mind the user (Working Bachelors) with migratory habit, People who also buy mineral water cans for safe water solutions.

The name of the dispenser comes from the sound which the dispenser pump makes when pressed. The design language was kept around tupperware storage boxes.

user sceNarIo (graVIty dIsPeNser)

The Dispenser pump can be set in two positions ,this one make the bottles and jug fit below the tap.

This position allows the top lid to be utilized as a small platform to fill water in glass or lota etc.

The user can also mount the same pump on a Mineral Water Can.

The user can also serve water on the tray provided.

keNWoodYear - 2012 (6 weeks) Internship

The brief was to gather information about how a Indian citizen navigates in India(Majorly Bangalore), what different problems they face while navigating and build a navigation device or system, for 4 wheel drivers, or 2 wheel drivers (Motorcycle in this case)

research

Plenty of problems were identified on two wheel driver while navigtion. Some important ones are shown as below :-

INFOHUBS , like Autorikshaw driver, Betel Leaf Vendor, Bakery Vendors, Traffic police they are major source of information of routes ,landmark, and directions.

“Landmarks “ opposite, behind, next to,by,across from, above are India’s very own longitude and latitude figures.

People prefer navigating from one landmark to the other closest landmark, when they are heading towards a unknown location.

sceNarIo study

A whole scenario was studied of an employee as to what difficulties one face while heading towards an unknown destination.

solutIoN (system + Gps Device)In this system , two stake holders under a 2km radius area take information of local landmarks of that area from the INFOHUBS (Auto wala, Bakery ,Cops,Paan wala) and uploads it on kenwood server, The moment a user with a kenwood navigation device enters that 2 km range will see all local landmarks in that area, like an building , shop, tree. In return these stakeholders will be paid by kenwood and INFOHUBS would be provided with special offers on kenwood appliances

gPs deVIce India is a booming market for motorcycles, most of my interviewees had a two wheeler vehicle. They can buy the device it has a preinstalled app. for navigation, When the device is active and the moment user enter the radius of 2km of a particular area,Local landmarks in that area will pop - up on the user screen including common ones.

INteractIVe objects

The aim was to reflect on the role of any daily use object used in India in this case ‘lota’ and its family of elegant design object,we discovered their sentimental and utilitarian value with its rich symbolism as the background. It was a set of existing form with interactions inspired from cultural roots.Three concepts where developed on different lotas concentrating on the interactions ,gestures involved keeping in mind the cultural importance of the object

Year - 2010/ 1 month course

The inspiration was kalash and the way it is used for marriage rituals, that is about bondage of two individuals. The concept was named Bondage vessel that could be used in public places to initiate interaction between two unknown individuals.

coNcePt - 1

The inspiration came from the way shirodhara is used for rejuvenating therapy that eliminate toxins and mental exhaustion as well as relieve stress and any ill effects on the central nervous system. Here the idea was to utilize the droplet in such a way that it produces a focal point as the fallen droplet for concentration and to use its natural sound that could assist in creating a relaxing ambiance in a room. The user can use it as a meditative object too.

decadINe

The exercise was to take inspiration from a geometrical shape and develop a concept, product or a piece of furniture.

Year - 2012 / 2 Day Exercise

the Process

Hmm a Decagon what do I do with it ??

Wow it has a Pentagon in its Geometry.

Now I know where I am Heading with this.

ahaa : )

The exploration with the shape (Decagon) was mostly around the table,as the biggest challenge was to finish under time limit.

the thought

I went with my first thought which was to design a table with the Decagon shape, But then I had some questions, what kind of table could it be ? and how will it look?A practice that Indians do often struck my mind was that they feel comfortable on the floor while eating, something that is ingrained in our culture since ages. This Idea of eating on the floor made me design a Low Dinning table, suitable in an Indian Scenario.

M a z i (together)

The exercise was to take inspiration from nature (Mushroom in this case) and develop a concept, product or a piece of furniture.

Year - 2012 / 2 Day Exercise

While looking for inspiration from nature,Internal cell structure of plants and leaves interested me, But something caught my eye, It was an image of a sliced mushroom piece, The composition of the brown scaled structure in an umbrella type form looked really beautifull to me and I thought exploring it further would be a nice idea.

exPloratIoN

the thought

Mazi is a greek term which means together, the chair is such that it needs a partner (Kid) to balance it properly and play(Rock),It would allow one to open up and connect with other kids while playing in places like schools.Although a single kid can also play with the chair.

therMoForMINg

The brief was to design an organizer for an Indian bathroom that are tight & congested spaces as the corners, keeping the user behavior in mind with thermoforming as a major constrain.

Year - 2012 / 3 weeks course

The three key factors designing process involved were :-

Categorization - Daily use bathroom products were categorized for the organizer were Oral Hygiene, Grooming,Bathing,Toilet maintenance etc.

Dimensioning - Common products were measured that are used in bathroom as shampoo bottle, toothbrush, shaver, etc

Understanding user behaviour - A real scenario was observed with a user in an unfamiliar or new space (Bathroom).

the Process

PrototyPINg

Prototyping allowed pointing out issues with the design, Such as the last shelf which doesn’t harmonise with rest of the design.

FINal Product

This shelf utilizes the tight corner space which mostly get wasted in the bathroom. The Idea behind the design was that it should merge with the corner.

Manufacturing - This piece can be thermoformedin one shot with one plastic sheet ,and just one adittional storage unit to be made separately, which can save on manufacturing cost.

Blue Storage unit is for Toothpaste, Toothbrush, Mouthfreshner etc

The storage units are colour coded so that the user doesn’t mix grooming & oral hygiene products together.

chaIr & sculPture

This was an exercise to express the emotive qualities of the form,Which were to be centred around contrasting words, as Deception - Truth.

Year - 2011 / 2 week course

the sculPture

The concept and the form was inspired by Pitcher Plant, and My Contrasting words were Deception - Truth.

The materials explored in the process were Poly Urethane Foam (PU Foam) and HighImpact Polystyrene (HIP).

The outer shell is made to give a sense as if something is trapped.Sharp edges (Cutouts) emphasizes the harsh character of the form,That makes it look deceptive where as the inner form is smooth, gentle that conveys the purity and the truthfulness of it.

the chaIr

The Exercise was to design a furniture for Prague (Capital of Czech Republic) by capturing the sense of style & design in context of the city. The chair is inspired by the famous Romanesque Architecture in Prague

Prototype Material - Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF)

The chair is made for out door use ,in garden, street , cafes in Prague. The attempt was to integrate subtle elements as curves ,geometrical shapes from the circular arches ,towers, old building that is common in Romanesque style,to achieve a cubist & Romanesque look in the peace,Yet having a color which gives it a royal and rustic feel.
