PLBA WOMEN

A Nugget From My Spiritual Journey… Last month I shared how God might be specifically working in our lives on the character quality of patience vs impatience. Remember how we need to learn to let Him exercise His patience on the INSIDE of us, not just on changing our out-side behavior? That is the difference between being hypocritical and “real.” But, being truly patient is just one area of many that God wants to shape in our lives to look more like Him. Guess what? Those areas are called “sin.” I don’t call them that. God does. And sin is sin is sin. We may look at other people and whatever it is that they do which is labeled “sin” and then say, rather self-righteously, “But, I don’t do THAT!” It doesn’t matter. If it doesn’t look like God, it is sin, no matter what it is or who does it. Our nation is frantically trying to figure out why shootings keep happening and how we can prevent them. The talking points are all over the place, but very few are landing on the very real issue of the sin nature of man. In the Ten Command-ments, God gave us six simple, clear directives for living, besides the ones per-taining to honoring and worshipping Him...

... Honor thy father and thy mother

...Thou shalt not kill

...Thou shalt not commit adultery

...Thou shalt not steal

...Thou shalt not bear false witness

...Thou shalt not covet. Some people think those laws are outdated, passé, over and done with. Appar-ently. Because there is sure a lot of it going on, isn’t there? Yet, in Matthew 5:17, Jesus said, “Don’t assume that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.” Yes, He expects us to keep the Law...but how? Because He now permanently indwells each believer, bringing inside us with Him the power to keep the Law and gives us His own character for our use!!! He also said murder/killing is the product of hate, adultery is the product of lust, etc. That tells us that all actions of sin start in the attitude of the heart. So, He teaches us the fine-tuning of law-abiding—the inside/out keeping of the Law, which easily translates into the inside/out of loving our neighbors as ourselves—in every way, from being patient to respecting life itself. To be continued...

“What If You Should Suffer?” I Peter 3:13-18

We know from biblical examples, church history and contemporary reality, that genuine Christians (Christ-followers) experience various levels of suffer-ing. Jesus said, “In the world you have tribulation…” (John 16:33) and the Apostle Paul told young Pastor Timothy, “Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” (II Timothy 3:12). It is not a matter of “IF” we’ll face persecution but more a matter of “WHEN” and to “WHAT EXTENT.” So, we ask ourselves, “What if I should face harsh suffering for my faith?” What would I...should I...be prepared to do? In I Peter 3:13-18 we discover some PRE-REQUISITES for facing persecution. If suffering is going to be unavoidable, it only makes sense that we should be as prepared as possible. I. To face suffering, we must SURRENDER TO JESUS AS OUR LORD (vv.13-17).

A. When Jesus is Lord, FEAR IS DECREASED (vv.13-14) B. When Jesus is Lord, FAITH IS INCREASED (v.15) C. When Jesus is Lord, FREEDOM IS EXTENDED (v.16)

II. To face suffering, we must ACKNOWLEDGE JESUS AS THE GREATEST SUFFERER (v.18). Consider His sacrifice from five (5) vantage points: A. The PERSON who suffered (v.18a “For Christ…”)

B. The PENALTY He suffered (v.18b “...died for sins…”) C. The PERMANENCE of His suffering (v.18c “once for all…”) D. The PURPOSE for His suffering (v.18d “...the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God…”) E. The POWER over His suffering (v.18e “...having been put to

death in the flesh, but made alive in the Spirit”) We know that “all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecut-ed” (II Timothy 3:12). There are two very important actions we can take to prepare for whatever suffering that awaits us: (1) SURRENDER TO JESUS AS OUR LORD! (Have you?) (2) ACKNOWLEDGE JESUS AS THE ONE WHO SUFFERED FOR US! (Have you?)

It Might Preach!

Word of Encouragement One of the hardest questions for us Christians to answer is, “Why do bad things happen to us when we’re truly seeking to follow Christ?” Many aspects of suffering baffle us. They make little or no sense to us at all. The truth is, we must trust God whatever comes our way.

Suppose that Ruth’s husband had never died. She would never have known Boaz as a kinsman-redeemer and never have been brought into the line of ancestry to Christ. Suppose that Job had not suffered so many ca-lamities. We would not have had the marvelous book that bears his name. Suppose that Joseph had never been sold into Egypt and never been able to minister life to his beleaguered family. Suppose that David had nev-er suffered at the hands of Saul. Many a great Hebrew hymn would have gone unpenned. Some of Paul’s great epistles were written from prison. Suppose that Jesus had refused to go to Calvary. Suffering is one of the consequences of the Fall. The thing to do “when sorrows like sea billows roll” is to trust God anyway! And keep doing all of the good we can. (John Phillip, Exploring The Epistles of Peter)
