WHO USES CIGARETTES? 46.2 million US adults have used
cigarettes as of 2001. This is 22.8% of all adults in the US. 25.2% were men and 20.7% were women.
24.0% were whites, 22.3% were African Americans, 16.7% were Hispanics, 32.7% were American Indians and Alaskan Natives and 12.4% were Asian Americans.
27% of those people 18 to 24 years old were current smokers
As of 2002, 22.9% of high school students were current smokers and White and Hispanic students were using the most cigarettes.
WHAT CHEMICALS DOES IT CONTAIN? There are over 4,000 addictives in cigarettes
including tobacco. DDT - An insecticide that was eventually
banned Acetone - This is usually found in nail polish
remover Butane - You can find this in your lighter fluid Cyanide - By now we should all know that
cyanide is a very deadly poison Ammonia - Used to clean your home and the
smell is awful and overpowering to the senses Benzene - This product can be found in
synthetic rubber and also used to make dye products
Arsenic - Another deadly poison that is often used to kill rats
Formaldehyde - An embalming fluid and teens often use it to get high
Naphthalene - Mothball ingredient Nicotine - Nicotine was a poison that was once
and may still be used to kill roaches
WHAT ARE THE HEALTH RISKS? Each year in the US, 440000 people die from
tobacco use. 1 out of 5 deaths have to do with smoking. Cigarettes kill more Americans than alcohol, car accidents, suicide, AIDS, homicide and illegal drugs all combined.
Smoking a cigarette causes at least 30% of all of the cancer deaths. Smoking cigarettes causes cancers of the lungs, voice box, oral cavity, throat, and esophagus. This can also cause cancers of the bladder, liver, kidneys, and causes some of the different types of leukemia.
About 87% of the lung cancer deaths are caused by smoking. Lung cancer is one of the hardest cancers to treat. Although, it is also very preventable.
Besides lung cancer, smoking can also cause heart disease, bronchitis, emphysema, stroke and pneumonia.
