Staff picksThe wines that our staff just can't stop drinking. Even though they probably should.

SPARKLINGProsecco Superiore Asolo Extra Dry NV — Vinvita, Veneto, Italy [V] 32.50I've tasted many, many underwhelming Proseccos but this is really classy, with a smooth texture and a lovely pear & melon character to the fruit. (Julian-Constantin (Bob), KP, King's Cross)

Brut Zero Sparkling Red 2017 — Dunleavy, Somerset, England [V] 50.50We've been selling Ingrid's delicious rose for ages, and now she's made this awesome sparkling red which is dry when you first taste it and then a bunch of blackberries hits your taste buds. Wine for Turkey and Duck I think. (Clare, Chef, Marylebone)

WHITEIGP Val de Loire Sauvignon Blanc 2018 — Vignerons de Valencay, Loire, France [V] 25.00We've all seen how expensive Sancerre is nowadays. To me this is very similar and I love the mineral flavours, but there's also a ripeness which makes it great to drink on its own as well as with food. (Sara, Assistant Manager, City)

Cotes du Rhone ‘Grandes Vignes’ 2017 — Vignerons d'Estezargues, Rhone, France [V] 28.00Love this wine. It has really rich character with apricots and peaches as well as warm, winter spice flavours like ginger, cinnamon and orange peel. But the best thing is that it somehow also manages to taste fresh and therefore easy to drink (Francesco, Head Chef, Farringdon)

Papegaai White Blend 2018 — A A Badenhorst, Swartland, South Africa 30.50A lot of South African Chenins taste the same, but this a citrusy and nectarine fruit character with a bit of weight too, probably from the Viognier and Marsanne that they add. (Robert, Waiter, Marylebone)

Montsant Blanco ‘Pinyeres’ 2018 — Celler Masroig, Catalonia, Spain [V] 32.50Montsant is best known for red wines but clearly it's brilliant for white Grenache too. If you're looking for a dry but ripe white with a bit of richness, very smooth texture and loads of freshness too, look no further. (Alex, KP, Marylebone)

Pinot Gris 2017 — Kumeu River, Kumeu, New Zealand 34.00Actually I didn't know that Pinot Gris is the same as Pinot Grigio! But this has so much more flavour and ripeness that most Pinot Grigios I've had before, and I love the almost sweet character of the fruit which matches rich, tasty food. (Asare, Senior KP, City)

Chablis 2018 — Domaine de Mauperthuis, Burgundy, France [V] 39.00This is my favourite because I can taste that it is Chablis because it's not oaky and buttery and is fresh and clean instead, but there are so many other characters and flavours in this that every time I drink it I get a new sensation (Maria, Waitress, City)

Sauvignon Blanc Fume 2017 — Oliver Zeter, Pfalz, Germany [V] 46.00The oak fermentation and ageing gives this Sauvignon a deep, peachy and almost smoky character whilst at the same time you still get that grassy Sauvignon thing! (Iva, HR Manager)

Wild Boy Chardonnay 2017 — Au Bon Climat, California, USA [V] 50.00If you like ripe Chardonnay you're going to love this! And what I love about it the most is that its not dominated by oaky flavours. (Luka, Waiter, King's Cross)

ROSECotes de Provence ‘No. 2’ 2018 — Ch de Saint-Martin, Provence, France (bag-in-box) 30.00We ship this stunning rose in bag-in-box because it is much better for the environment that way, but the wine is very classy and surprisingly good to drink with meat and fish dishes (Nicolae, Chef, King's Cross)

‘Har’ Rose 2018 — Dagon Clan, Dealu Mare, Romania [V] 30.50I love the fruitiness that the grape varieties Cabernet and Syrah give to this rose, as well as the fine tannins which raises it well above most of the roses you see out there (Lucie, KP, Farringdon)

REDMontsant Criança ‘Vi Negre’ 2017 — Cellar El Masroig, Catalonia, Spain (bag-in-box) [V] 24.50This is a Crianca (spelled Crianza in Rioja) means that it is aged in oak barrels before being ready to release. The oak helps to give more structure and a touch of vanilla & spice, and the old vine fruit is dark and ripe. (Erik, Waiter, King's Cross)

Mendoza Malbec ‘Lorca Lorca’ 2018 — Mauricio Lorca, Mendoza, Argentina [V] 28.00This winemaker doesn't try to make an overripe, jammy Argentinian Malbec like a lot of others do and instead he uses his own high-quality estate fruit to make a ripe but elegant & fragrant red. (Sebastian, KP, Chiswick)

Vin Ordinaire 2016 — Alphabetical, Western Cape, South Africa [V] 32.00You should choose this if you like Bordeaux or Bordeaux-style wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and all those other varieties. In fact I think this better than any Bordeaux I've ever had at this level! (Marcelo, Chef, City)

‘Bogan goes Walkabout’ 2017 — Mark Haisma, Rhone/Ardeche, France [V] 36.50Don't be fooled by the name. Aussie Mark Haisma has made a beautiful & elegant Syrah Grenache that taste does taste like a top Rhone red but also feels, somehow, like a Burgundy (Tom, Chef, Chiswick)

Bourgogne Pinot Noir ‘Grande Reserve’ 2016 — Mauperthuis, Burgundy, France [V] 39.00A lot of Burgundy can feel thin and too light, but this Pinot Noir has a ripe and fleshy character as well as that elegant structure that you expect from good red Burgundies (George, Supervisor, Farringdon)

Shiraz Mataro 2017 — Adelina, Clare Valley, South Australia 45.50The Clare Valley is much less known for high quality reds than Barossa Valley but in my opinion produces better, more defined reds. The vines here are seriously old Shiraz and Mataro (Mourvedre) (Ivana, supervisor, City)

Pinot Noir Reserve 2017 — Oliver Zeter, Pfalz, Germany [V] 48.50I love how surprised people are when I recommend this as it is so deep and delicious, as good as a lot of expensive Burgundies. (Ismail, Assistant Manager, Chiswick)

Lussac Saint Emilion ‘L'Egerie’ 2010 — Chateau Chereau, Bordeaux, France [V] 50.00This is amazing value. Top left bank Bordeaux (which means it is mostly Merlot) made from seriously high-quality fruit and fermented with wild yeasts. Its 9 years old but still tastes youthful (Alberto, Waiter, Farringdon)

SWEETBanyuls ‘Galateo’ 2018 — Coume del Mas, 50cl, Roussillon, France [V] 44.00Who needs Port when you can have this? Sweet, red, crammed full of ripe black fruit. Have it with chocolate or rich desserts, or with cheese. (Matyas, Chef, King's Cross)

Vin Doux 2018 — Samos, 37.5cl, Samos, Greece 18.50You can smell that this is Muscat as it is so floral and grapey. It's definitely sweet enough to match all kinds of desserts too — I like it with pear tart or other fruity desserts. (Albert, Sous Chef, Chiswick)

Page 6: Pouring great wines and serving simple, delicious · Hepcat Session IPA — Gipsy Hill, London (4.6% ABV) 330ml (CAN) 5.30 ... King's Cross) ‘Har’ Rose 2018 — Dagon Clan, Dealu

Organic and biodynamicHarmony and biodiversity in the vineyard. For our children!

SPARKLINGCremant de Bourgogne Extra Brut NV — Stephane Aladame, Cote Chalonnaise [ORG] [V] 44.50An Aligote and Chardonnay blend, aged for 15 months. There's a steeliness to the acidity, then a whole bunch of peaches come tumbling out into your mouth.

WHITERotgipfler 2018 — Johanneshof Reinisch, Thermenregion, Austria [ORG] [V] 3 37.50Rotgipfler. Not easy to say but very easy to drink. Exotic fruit and a dash of banana, balanced with mouth-puckering freshness.

‘Chard’ MMXVII Secret de Notre Terroir’ — Charles Baur, Eguisheim, France [ORG] [V] 3 38.50As the name suggests, this is a 2017 Alsace Chardonnay. Why so cryptic? Ask the authorities! Granola, baked apple, lemon rind, toast.

Muscadet de Sevre et Maine ‘Verger’ 2018 — Pierre Luneau Papin, France [ORG] [V] 1 30.50Extended time ageing on its yeasty ‘lees’ gives this class-leading Muscadet surprising depth and flavour. But it still has that awesome crisp, citrus edge that you'd expect!

Chinon Blanc 2017 — Chateau de la Bonneliere, Loire, France [ORG] [V] 3 38.00Chenin Blanc grown organically on the left bank of the Vienne River. Lemon rind and orange blossom, a touch of waxiness and sturdy acidity.

Pouilly Fume ‘Vitae’ 2018 — Domaine du Bouchot, France [ORG] [BIO] [V] 3 44.50This reminds you just how much Sauvignon Blanc can offer. Fennel, white peach and lemon aromas, with a mineral seam that energises the wine all the way to the very end, emphasising the orchard fruit and also adding layers & layers of savoury complexity.

Beaujolais Blanc ‘Terres Dorees’ 2017/18 — J P Brun, Beaujolais, France [ORG] [V] 3 44.50From ancient Chardonnay vines, this puts a lot of Burgundy to shame. Focused, deep & intense, fresh & crunchy. A bit like apple granola in liquid form.

Trigone Blanc N18 — Le Soula, Roussillon, France [BIO] 3 39.00Bonkers but brilliant, from both the '17 & '18 vintages and six varieties & vineyards high up in the Pyrenees, Macabeu & Vermentino being the majority. Apricot & spice.

Roditis ‘Natur’ 2018 — Tetramythos, Peloponnesus, Greece [ORG] [V] 1 34.50An ultra-low intervention organic Roditis grown high in the mountains 2 hours from Athens in the Peloponnese. Apple blossom aromas, citrus & apple flavours, creamy finish.

Atma White 2017/18 — Thymiopoulos, NW Greece [BIO] [V] 2 29.00‘Blanc de noir’ Xinomavro and Malagousia, from NW Greece. SO TASTY! Buzzy, electric acidity, then the Malagousia kicks in with a floral peachiness.

Gavi di Gavi ‘Rovereto’ 2018 — Ernesto Picollo, Piedmont, Italy [ORG] 1 36.50A tangy Gavi (Cortese) which will wake you up and take you on a day trip with Mr Peach and Mrs Apricot.

Lugana 2017 — Ca Lojero, Italy [ORG] 3 38.00Made from the Turbiana grape grown around Lake Garda. Melon, tangerine, mint.

Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico 2018 — Consono, Marche, Italy [ORG] 2 30.00Yellow peach, white flowers and almond. There's a lovely roundness and depth to this wine, yet it manages to be elegant in nature, almost delicate.

Colline Pescaresi Pecorino 2017 — Marchesi Migliorati, Italy [ORG] 2 34.00If you haven't had Pecorino before, drink it now! Plenty of lemon & thyme, then you get pears, apples & lime. Then you get another glass…

Bianco IGT Puglia 2018 — Antica Enotria, Puglia, Italy [ORG] [V] 1 28.00Organic Fiano and Falanghina from Puglia with seriously impressive texture and flavour. White peach and apple, intermingling with yeasty, bready characters.

‘Loureiro Classico’ 2017 — Quinta do Ameal, Vinho Verde, Minho, Portugal [ORG] [V] 2 36.50Light and super-fresh, citrus and green apple, herbs & flowers, steely minerality and great texture. A big step up from classic Vinho Verde.

Rioja Riserva Blanco ‘Vina Tondonia’ 2006 — Lopez de Heredia, Rioja, Spain [ORG] 3 62.00Aged white Rioja and a thing of beauty. Spice, orange peel, nuts & apricot, with plenty of texture.

Rioja Blanco Tempranillo ‘Ad Libitum’ 2018 — Juan Carlos Sancha, Rioja, Spain [ORG] [V] 3 36.50Made from white Tempranillo (very rare), a savoury & spicy number with subtle melon fruit and ground nuts.

Mestizaje Blanco 2018 — Bodega Mustiguillo, Valencia, Spain [ORG] [V] 3 34.50A high impact, wild yeast-fermented organic white made mainly from the rare grape Merseguera. Fennel, petal scents, apricot, white peach & citrus pith.

ORANGECatarratto ‘Baglio Bianco’ 2018 — Ciello, Sicily, Italy [ORG] [V] 33.00Rich and full, crammed with per skin & orange rind, fragrant wild herbs and ginger. Wild yeast fermented, along with the grape skins, and unfiltered.

RED‘Pot a Cab Sav’ 2018 — Continental Platter, Margaret River, Western Australia [BIO] [V] 1 28.00Margaret River Cabernet costs a fortune doesn't it? Nah. Wild yeast fermented, unfiltered & unfined. Sweet, crunchy blackcurrants, yellow peppers, black pepper and a hint of cedar wood.

Chinon ‘Les Graves’ 2017 — Fabrice Gasnier, Touraine, France [ORG] [BIO] 1 35.00A juicy Cabernet Franc from gravel-rich soils, all ripe black cherries and crunchy tannins.

St Nicolas de Bourgueil ‘Les Rouilleres’ 2017 — Frederic Mabileau, France [ORG] [BIO] [V] 2 37.50Loire Cabernet Franc, a unique and wondrous thing. No oak is used in this cuvee, and it's all about the crunch of the tannins, the burst of the red berry fruit and the herbaceous, leafy aromas.

Cotes du Rhone ‘Petit Ours’ 2018 — Matthieu Barret, Rhone, France [ORG] [BIO] [V] 3 38.50Organic & biodynamic Syrah, wild yeast-fermented and aged in concrete vats which helps to keep its freshness & vibrancy. It is deep & fleshy with blackberries, black cherries, soft tannins & black pepper.

Cornas ‘Brise Cailloux’ 2017 — Domaine du Coulet, Rhone, France [ORG] [BIO] [V] 3 74.00Unusually for Cornas, concrete is used instead of oak for fermentation and for the 14 months of ageing. Cherry, blackberry, wild strawberry, fennel & white pepper, full tannins & serious minerality.

IGP Ardeche Syrah 2016 — Domaine Curtat, Ardeche, France [ORG] [V] 3 44.00The Syrah used for this wine falls just outside of St Joseph and so must be declassified. It is, however, monumental, with the kind of structure, intensity and purity that many Rhone producers can only long for. Expect precise red fruit, wonderful tannins and a savoury, mineral, quality.

IGP Pays d'Oc Pinot Noir 2018 — Moulin de Gassac, Languedoc, France [ORG] [V] 2 27.00An easy drinking Pinot Noir from a warm climate that not only tastes like Pinot, but is actually quite wonderful.

Naoussa ‘Young Vine’ 2018 — Thymiopoulos, Macedonia, Greece [BIO] [V] 2 32.50Young vine Xinomavro. Fragrant, medium bodied, crunchy tannins & red plums.

Naoussa ‘Young Vine’ 2018 — Thymiopoulos, Macedonia, Greece (MAGNUM 150cl) [BIO] [V] 2 69.00Young vine Xinomavro. Fragrant, medium bodied, crunchy tannins & red plums.

Rapsani 2017 — Thymiopoulos, Rapsani, Greece [BIO] [V] 3 47.00Xinomavro, Krassato & Stavroto. A forest fruit-scented, blackberry chunkster.

Dolcetto d'Alba 2017 — G.D. Vajra, Italy [ORG] 2 38.00Sensational wine, with a purity and focus of fruit rarely seen. Violets, red fruits and berries with fresh-cut grass aromas and a hint of almond.

We all love a good party. It livens up our weekends and gets us through the weekdays! But what are the rules for wine at a party? We can happily say that the rules are… there are no rules!

Below is our short guide to the wines that suit any occasion and all tastes — whether you are the party host or bringing a bottle. If in doubt, this list will help tick all the boxes.Whetting the appetite, very important. A bottle of sparkling wine is just the ticket. Break the ice with a bottle on ice! Or get those juices flowing with something light and energising for the party ahead:

Wiston Brut NV — Wiston Estate, West Sussex £32A bottle of bubbles. Always a good place to start and an English one at that made from the classic three varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. A gold medal winner that has singing freshness. Certain to get any party off to a bang! Or a pop (of the cork)!

‘Trinkfluss’ Trocken 2018 — Axel Pauly, Mosel, Germany £12.50A wine ideally named for a party: Trinkfluss meaning ‘drinking flow’. That all-important easy flow is what it's all about at a party! A light wine in body and alcohol with vibrating acidity. Excellent as an aperitif, with canapés, oysters or simply on its own. It is totally charming. Bound to please absolutely everybody.

You need something for the main course and these gorgeous wines are just right. Richer whites and reds that really shine with food and help to balance the palate:

Estate Chardonnay 2017 — Kumeu River, Kumeu, New Zealand £22.00This winery has been getting a lot of attention over the last few years, and for good reason. The complex blend of bright fruit, silky texture, acidity and creaminess makes this the ultimate food friendly wine to be paired with all sorts of dishes.

Kisi ‘Vita Vinea’ 2016 — Dakishvili Family Vineyard, Akhmeta, Georgia £23.50An orange wine from Georgia. A great conversation starter if ever there was one. Made from the Kisi (how lovely) grape fermented on the skins, creating the orangey hue, and aged in the ancient method of Qvevri (terracotta pots). Rich and lipsmackingly dry. One to have with meat or fish, it is totally versatile.

Vin Ordinaire 2016 — Alphabetical, Western Cape, South Africa (V) £14.00Nothing ordinary about this one, no siree. Rich and ripe with bright fruit and juicy notes of chocolate and menthol. A complex recipe of the great Bordeaux grapes that will create a good debate for those die-hard fans who simply won't believe it's not butter—I mean Bordeaux.

Mendoza Malbec ‘Lorca Lorca’ 2017 — Mauricio Lorca, Mendoza, Argentina £11.75You can't go wrong with this one. A well-known variety and excellent value. The grapes are grown at high altitude, helping to keep that all important freshness. A real crowd pleaser. A safe bet to keep your guests happy… but will you ever get them to leave?

Douro Tinto ‘Drink Me’ 2017 — Niepoort, Douro, Portugal (magnum) £30.00Double the quantity, double the fun that's what we say! Getting out a magnum has that great ‘wow’ factor. And even better when what's inside is simply delish! This is a typical big blend from the Douro Valley. We're big fans, and so will the other guests be.

Bourgogne Pinot Noir ‘Grande Reserve’ 2016 — Mauperthuis, Burgundy, France £19.50This is a real charmer and ticks the box for something classic. Heartbreaking to share, so make sure to open more than one bottle. This has excellent quality pure fruit with a touch of smokiness. Elegance through and through.

It's time to indulge. You're almost finished and looking for a little something sweet to go with cheese and dessert. Look no further!

Madeira ‘The Atlantic Rainwater’ NV — Barbeito, Portugal, 50cl £15With the promise of this at the end you won't even mind missing the last tube. A cracking balance of citrus, dried fruit and savoury salinity. Named ‘rainwater’ in commemoration of a Madeira once shipped to Baltimore diluted by the rain while sitting on the dockside. And so, by sheer accident, a lighter style was born. Big believers in combating climate change this bottle was brought over by sailboat all the way along the Atlantic from Madeira. Pair it with both cheese or dessert. But so good you may want to keep it for yourself…

Sauvignon Blanc ‘Sweetheart’ 2018 — Oliver Zeter, Pfalz, Germany, 50cl £16.50Sweetheart. A term of endearment highly fitting here, both for the wine itself and the person who brought it! The fermentation was stopped in the middle leaving low alcohol and natural sugars that make this lusciously sweet but with a freshness that has you reaching for a top-up. Perfect with desserts, especially a lemon or apricot tart.

All of the above wines and more are available to buy direct from the wine shop or online for delivery anywhere in mainland UK. These are also great options for an event in one of our private rooms where we can pour them for you!

No more boring parties!Easy guide to wine everyone up

Five vintages of Rodney & the HorseWhat we've learned so far

Charlie Young and Brett Woonton (owners of Vinoteca) teamed up with renowned winemaker Darryl Catlin creating the first vintage of Rodney & the Horse back in 2014. Two wine types were launched, a dry and super-drinkable Riesling and a rich and intense Shiraz, both developed in the Clare Valley, South Australia. Below is a little look-see at these gorgeous wines, some background into the inspiration for the label, how each vintage has developed from the original concept and how the winemaking philosophy has changed over the years.

We managed to grab Charlie and ask him a few questions:

How did Rodney & the Horse come about?Brett & I are big fans of Clare Valley Riesling and we decided that we'd love to make one for Vinoteca.

We talked to our friend Darryl in South Australia and told him what we were looking for — a ‘classic’ Clare Riesling with both ageing ability but also drinkability when young — and he went out and found a great vineyard for us. He made the wine in his winery in Adelaide hills with wild yeast fermentation and 3 months on lees (unusual for Clare Riesling) which was designed to flesh the wine out a little as Clare Valley Rieslings can often be hard to appreciate when young.

We shipped our first consignment of 2014 Riesling at the end of that year and it was a great success. The next year we thought that a Shiraz would be a good idea and Darryl was able to source fruit from the same grower and the same vineyard area. He made an

equally expressive wine with bags of personality, and was able to match our brief of it being unashamedly Aussie in nature but without the jammy sweetness or oak that you find in some examples. We wanted freshness, dark fruit and again, drinkability, and we were delighted with the result. When creating our brand, Brett and I knew that it would be a wine sold exclusively in our wine bars and shops but we didn't want to label it Vinoteca. For us, wines are all about where they come from and who made them, so we came up with a cryptic name and made a strong reference to its provenance on the back label as well as naming Darryl who is, after all, the person that made the wine what it is.

Why Rodney & the Horse?Brett calls everyone Rodney. So that's easy, he became Rodney. And when we met while working for Liberty Wines, Brett noticed that I eat like a horse and so my nickname ‘The Horse’ was born.

What about the label? Our friend Julia Miranda created the labels and has subtly evolved the design over the years.

Have you learned anything from vintage to vintage?Charlie: Climatic conditions in Clare can vary significantly, and Darryl reads the fruit each year beautifully and allows the wine to shape itself in different ways. The differences in the vintages are clear, with each wine not an identical generic model.

Darryl: I have learned to be patient and to trust my gut. I now spend more time in the vineyard tasting the grapes to get the timing right, which in turn helps make the wine what it is today.

Getting it right in the vineyard, reducing yields and finding the right picking time helps to make a good wine and ultimately less intervention in the winery. All we need to do is watch it ferment and decide on when to press it to barrel.

Charlie & Darryl: But the best thing? We love drinking them.

The wines themselves and what we have to say about them:THE RIESLING:

2014: A brilliantly balanced Riesling hitting a real high point after four years in bottle. Grassy, toasty aromas mixed with ripe pear and citrus fruit, then the intense flavours rear up and grab your tongue, delivering the hits of sweetness and pockets of juicy freshness with pin-point accuracy.

2015: Packed full of white and yellow fruit, bordering on the tropical, with an underlying ripeness and toasty richness which is all brought back to earth by brilliantly fresh, citrus-like acidity. Like eating key lime pie on a fantastically sunny day, then jumping into an ice-cool river!

2016: A serious Clare Valley Riesling, settling itself in for the long haul. Spicy, intense Manuka honey-like aromas,

then a dry apple and melon hit with lime pith for texture.

2017: Super-focused with flavours and aromas of lime, melon and elderflower. There's a little sweet hit of fruit which pops in your mouth, then it's all about mega-pure citrus, a crunch of zest and properly dry and zippy finish. This vintage is the most full-bodied version so far because of the weather pushing back the picking date allowing more time for juicy maturation of the grapes.

2018: Light, almost delicate, with deep mineral character and a ripe, grapey burst at the end. Lime features heavily here, yet there's a softness that makes this feel almost Germanic. It's so fresh and so easy to drink, yet this will keep going for another 10 or even 20 years.

THE SHIRAZ:

2015: Plush and generously ripe fruit with equal bursts of red and black berries, yet a very focused and supportive tannic structure which allows it all to stand up, breathe and circulate. The spice is here, but in the background, allowing the fruit to take the podium.

2016: Everything is ramped up with this punchy red but all perfectly in balance making it high impact and highly drinkable. Fields of wild herbs, mainly thyme, with super-grippy tannins and zippy acidity.

2017: Piles of plump plums, sweetly ripe and dark but backed up by a wave of fresh acidity. There are plenty of supporting tannins here but they're soft and ripe and are happy to sit back and let the fruit do the talking.

2018: Perhaps the most focused R&H Shiraz yet, with plenty of dark & firm berry fruit depth yet somehow making it feel medium bodied and in no way heavy. This lightness of touch allows the tannins to pop and crunch and the acidity to accentuate a fabulous purity.

The 6th vintage of Riesling has just been bottled, and the 5th vintage of Shiraz is finishing its 9 month ageing period in old French oak barrels. We're excited to try them soon!

Vinoteca had the great pleasure of recently visiting Renegade and meeting its founder Warwick Smith. An urban winery in the heart of our very own city, nestled in the railway arches of Bethnal Green.

You might ask — what about the grapes? These have been sourced from carefully selected vineyards around Europe as well as from the heart of England. When you consider it, there's actually no need to be near the vineyard these days. We're lucky to be living in an era that the grapes are close enough to be transported to the winery at temperature to keep them fresh for when the time is right to process. In fact, what a treat as a London consumer, to be near the winery for a change and to enjoy the upside of a locally-made product.

When asked about their philosophy, Warwick explained that, when they started three years ago, they were asking the grape growers themselves how they envisioned the end result. But Renegade soon realised that they wanted to develop distinct wines their way.

We've caught them at a very special time during their experimental phase… creating a fascinating portfolio of premium wines and pushing the boundaries while they do so.

Here at Vinoteca we have two of Renegade's fine drinks: Bethnal Bubbles and the new ‘Rahul’ Unfiltered Bacchus. Both incorporating English grapes sourced from Herefordshire.

Bethnal Bubbles 2017, Renegade, England £5 (200ml can)This little rebellious beauty proved to be a triumph at the Wine Car Boot in King's Cross in July. 100% Seyval Blanc from Herefordshire. It isn't strictly a wine but instead an ‘aromatised wine-based drink’. Bethnal Bubbles is an English Sparkling that had a ‘tea bag’ full of the finest premium hops (often used for American Pale Ale) lowered into it and left to soak and ‘aromatise’ for a week. Followed by the second fermentation in the bottle. The result is a cloudy, unfiltered sparkling that smells like a good beer and tastes like cloudy lemonade (and beer)! And if all of this wasn't ‘renegade’ enough...they have now made the Bethnal Bubbles in an accessible 200ml can which still allows the fermentation process to continue. No need for the big commitment to a bottle. This wine is made to drink now. Just grab a cold can, crack it open and let the revolutionary in you savour the taste.

Rahul 2018, Renegade, England £22 (750ml bottle)New on the Vinoteca list this season is the 2018 ‘Rahul’. An unfiltered white wine made from 100% Bacchus, a white variety suited very well to Herefordshire's soil and climate. We're fortunate to be able to stock this wine that has a tiny annual production of 1,200 bottles. The whole bunches are rubbed over chicken wire which gently de-stems the grapes. Once pressed, the juice is wild-yeast fermented on the skins and left for 120 days in a concrete and fibreglass Qvevri, a lemon-shaped Georgian pot used for the entire winemaking process. When you open a bottle you will taste elderflower, white peach and orange zest, while being dry with a soft tannic texture from prolonged skin contact. The wine is slightly cloudy, extremely complex and very aromatic. Make sure to try this on your next visit to Vinoteca.

When not at their own fine establishment of Vinoteca, Brett and Charlie have been known to enjoy a tipple elsewhere. Big fans of great wine and tasty grub, they have put together a very special list of their favourite wine bars both in London and abroad that they highly recommend to visit:

Vindinista Wine Shop and Bar, 74 Churchfield Road, Acton, London W3 6DH This is a tiny wine bar and shop with a big attitude near where I live, run by Paula and Mike who have crafted a well thought out wine list which you can take out or drink in at their bar. There's always something entertaining on by the glass as well as cheeses and charcuterie to soak up the booze. The service here is knowledgeable and friendly with a great neighbourhood vibe. This wine shop is ideally located for me to pick up a bottle if I'm caught short.

Quality Wines, 94 Farringdon Road, London EC1R 3EAGus Gluck runs this excellent wine bar, who incidentally was one of Vinoteca's managers a few years ago. You're never bored with Gus's well curated 200+ wine list, which are all available to drink in. The list is very weighted toward the natural style, but always on the right side of funk. Plenty of wine by the glass available and some well-chosen beers. There is also a short menu of QCH classics and dishes based around produce from their shop. QCHWB is located 49 metres from the Vinoteca head office — dangerous!

All Wine Bars lead to VinotecaBest wine bars by Brett & Charlie

Willi's Wine Bar, 13 Rue des Petits Champs, 75001 Paris, FranceMark Williamson opened this wine bar in 1980 and it's still going strong. Most people believe the name ‘Willi's’ comes from Mark's surname, when in fact it is named after a dog called William Foster Simpson Browing III. Odd but true. Willi's has always championed reds & whites from the Northern Rhone Valley in France — Cote Rotie, Cornas, Hermitage, St Joseph, Condrieu, St Peray — way before they became superstar and super-expensive. Willi's is an informal, friendly space with a long bar and a dining area in the rear, situated in between the Palais Royal and what was the old National Library. If you're not drinking a Syrah from the Rhone, you could just as easily be sampling a Mosel Riesling, a Loire Chenin Blanc or a Washington State Pinot. And the food is superb. Francois has been the head chef for 30 years! I'd kill for his guinea fowl with wild mushrooms.

Juveniles, 47 Rue de Richelieu, 75001 Paris, FranceOne of the best, if not the best, Wine Bar/Restaurant/Wine Shop in the universe. Small, cosy, stripped down, always packed, the experience is invariably immersive — customers balance glasses and plates on stacks of boxes when there are no tables, and plates of food or cheese are passed along the room from guest to guest until they reach the intended recipient. The little open kitchen at the back, now run by founder Tim Johnston's son-in-law Romain, bangs out food at an impressive rate. Andouillette and Haggis with neeps & tatties (and a shot of single malt Whisky deposited in the middle) have now been replaced with Romain's superb, seasonal, unfussy cooking, with produce sourced directly from local farms and top suppliers. Tims daughter Margaux runs Juveniles in an irresistibly elegant, friendly and effective way. But if you like some good old-fashioned British piss-taking, then Tim will oblige. Oh, almost forgot, the wines here are brilliant, accessible, affordable and exciting.

Le Verre Volé, 67 rue de Lancry, 75010 Paris, FrancePerched near the Canal Saint-Martin in the 10th district, this is, quite simply, a brilliant Natural Wine Bar. Conspicuously informal, the staff will serve you in ripped jeans and t-shirts, inked-up to the nines. Yet there's no question of slackness here — service is attentive, friendly and helpful. All of the wines are produced without the use of any chemical products, with intervention during winemaking and sulphur additions kept to the absolute minimum. The wines are chosen carefully, nothing stinky or mud-like here, only focused and massively expressive, hugely drinkable lovely things. And an enormous plate of black pudding with baked apple here is one of the best things I've ever eaten.

Graceburn Wineroom, 11a Green St, Healesville, Victoria 3777, AustraliaMac Forbes is a winemaker and proper all-round lovely bloke, based in Healesville in Victoria's Yarra Valley. He's obsessed with ‘patches of dirt’, and uses what he calls old-fashioned wine making to produce a range of wines which are all about the vineyard that they are produced from. You'll see a massive difference between his Coldstream Pinot and his Wesburn Pinot. Both are light and fragrant yet deep and intensely complex. In Mac's awesome wine bar and bistro Graceburn, you can choose any one of around 150 of his wines of all vintages, including the unique RS Rieslings, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet. There's a bunch of delicious funksters too such as Pinot Meunier, Nebbiolo and a few ‘Pet Nats’. You'll eat really well here too. Snack on local cured meats and cheeses, or seasonal dishes from the kitchen. Oh yes, just remembered that he has a huge list of wines from other producers too including France, Austria, Germany, Italy, Portugal…

Go soft!Low & alcohol-free alternatives to wine

The fact that you are currently looking at our WINE list may lead you to believe that we're pretty fond of the stuff — and you would be absolutely right! Our devotion runs deep… HOWEVER we're just as thrilled about all the exciting alternatives. The ‘low or no’ alcoholic drinks are shaking up the drinks industry with more and more of us abstaining. Whether you're saying no to alcohol all year or just for Sober October, we want to know that there's something exciting to turn to. Soft drinks in the past have always been, let's face it, rather uninteresting, overly sugary, mass-produced and reminding you of what you drank as a child. But no more! We can now confidently sit at the grown up's table and shout about these ‘adult’ soft drinks!

Not only is it a healthy option but no one really needs that groggy feeling in the morning after one too many. With these drinks you're joining the party (and feeling pretty smug the day after). Similar to wines, we finally have some drinks free of alcohol to pair with food. Small, artisanal producers are creating magic and these below are some that we want to rave about.

Unfiltered Lager — Lucky Saint, Bavaria (0.5% ABV) 330mlA lot of love has gone into the making of this beer. Unlike most low alcohol beers that try to brew at minimum ABV, this is fully brewed and the alcohol then removed. Which means all of the personality of a great beer but not the alcohol, what a win! No filtering equals no compromise on character. It gives us a larger mouthfeel and a texture that is creamy and unctuous. When poured it's got that great head we're looking for and to taste it is zippy and packed with citrus fruit. Everything to restore you after a hard day's work.

Real Kombucha ‘Dry Dragon’ (0.4-0.5% ABV) 330ml‘Dry Dragon’— a dangerous name for a dangerously drinkable drink. So called for the green tea found in China's Zhejiang. Adding yeast (or ‘Scoby’ as the Kombuchian converts like to call it) to the tea, they allow it to ferment. Bringing us a light, slightly tart, thirst-quencher with an extremely low alcohol content, a quantity that our bodies naturally metabolise… it is therefore classified as a non-alcoholic drink. Flavours of grapefruit and sweet lemons combined with a straw-like character for comforting complexity make it perfect for all-day drinking or paired with a tasty meal.

Riesling Grape Juice ‘Freeling’ 2018, Schloss Vollrads, Germany (0% ABV) 750mlSchloss Vollrads winery, masters of the Riesling grape and all its wonders, bring us ‘Freeling’. A sparkling juice that will have you celebrating with the rest of the table. Unfermented, so zero alcohol, and loaded with a grapey character balanced out with the all-important acidity that has made Riesling one of the most noble varieties of the world and that has us gagging for a top-up!

Æcorn AperitifsWe are excited to be welcoming the new Æcorn Aperitifs! This is the sister branch of the celebrated Seedlip. We have been enjoying pouring Seedlip's non-alcoholic gin for some time and are now keen to make more cocktails that are totally alcohol-free. The trend of aperitifs has exploded in the world of cocktails and we don't want anybody missing out. With these new vermouths we'll be able to pour all sorts including a non-alcoholic Aperol Spritz and what is now being called the NOgroni! As the name of the range suggests, the vermouths are made from British acorns, which act as the bittering agent, combined with the unfermented juice of English wine grapes and a variety of botanicals from all over the world. Chemistry, artistry and terrific taste buds have fused here to create something really special, and darn tasty!
