Landfill Gas Projects – The Mission Mission of GESS with the implementation of LFG projects in the region

Supporting the Dubai integrated energy strategy of 2030 set out by the Supreme Council of Energy and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum which aims to diversify energy sources and to preserve the environment.

Al Qusais Project – Dubai UAE large scale registered CDM Generating Power

Diversified is fuel mix Added a new energy source Reduced the need and use of diesel for daily operations Reduction of Green House gases of Over 400,000 tons of CO2 equivalent per year.

The Al Qusais CDM project alone is equivalent to reducing the environmental impact of taking over 80,000 cars off the roads.

What is a TYPICAL LANDFILL - Al QusaisLandfills are living organisms. It is the decomposition of the organic portion of the waste that produces landfill gas.

Leachate treatment

An untreated landfill has an adverse impact on the environment, it is a hazard that is a primary cause of CH4 emissions globally and is a contributor to Global Warming.

MSW 35% Organic- Waste Generates LFGHotel and restaurant waste, great gas production

Household waste in plastic bags, usually wet

Garden and park waste, decomposable

All of these waste streams have great gas production potential

Industrial waste; Plastics Wood Metals Glass Building rubble Concrete blocks

No gas production

Landfill Gas (LFG) is typically composed of; Methane CH4 50 – 60 %

vol. Carbon Dioxide CO2 35 – 45 %

vol. Nitrogen N2 0 – 20 % vol. Oxygen O2 0 – 5% vol.The 4 phases of LFG – Phase IV Methane production

Gas Collection Design and Engineering The Detailed engineering and the design of the gas

collection network that has over 25 km of pipes underground have enabled us to optimize the potential.

Al Qusais is an award winning site that has surpassed all expectations.

Phase 2 will be to extend the gas network and the development of 20 Mw power from landfill gas and the fulfillment of many years of hard work.

Dubai Municipality marks ‘green’ milestone with Al Qusais Landfill now fully powered using landfill gas

• First time that landfill gas is converted to generate 1MW electricity in the region; in line with Dubai Municipality’s vision to generate 20 MW of power from landfill gas by 2020

• Fully registered with UN, the large-scale CDM project underlines Dubai’s focus on sustainable development

• Initiative will reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions equivalent to over 400,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere

• Project development, design and construction by Green Energy Solutions & Sustainability LLC with GE’s Jenbacher gas engine deployed on site to generate power

What was a dump site, is now a well managed environmental landfill that is a source of power and pride.

Current Situation in the Region and why we should do something!!

Landfilling is still an option here – Al Qusais receives over 6000 tons of waste per day. In Europe and North America the existing landfills are a source of power as it should be here as well. The European trends are moving away from landfilling. The top methane sources are the decomposition of wastes in landfills. A new emphasis on methane would require us to get smarter about capturing methane at landfills, www.earthisland.org Earth Island Journal

Statistics show that Methane from landfills is harmful (IPCC – intergovernmental panel on climate change)

CDM and Kyoto Protocol fix the GWP – Global Warming Potential of Green House Gases – CH4 Methane (landfill gas) has a GWP of 25

We are able to reduce the impact that landfill gas has on the environment and generate power, there are no excuses left.

Climate Change – The commitment from the UAE

Climate Change – This phrase has been in the news on a daily basis. It is a doomsday message that is being relayed by everyone from Political leaders to Religious Leaders. During the last Conference of Parties (COP) 19 meeting on climate change, the UAE committed to addressing climate change from an economic, social and environmental point of view

Includes implementing commercial clean energy projects, making investments into clean technologies expanding development assistance my making clean energy accessible to all. The UAE is meeting that challenge and the Al Qusais landfill gas to power project is a key milestone as well as Solar Parks, Smart Cities applications and recycling initiatives from the Dubai Municipality Waste Department.

Power Generation Potential: Landfill Gas As per the Technical specification of GE Jenbacher:

• 1 MW supply running at Al Qusais Site, • Equipment code JGC 320 GS-B.L , • specific gas consumption is 590 Nm3 per 1058 KW generation. • = 551.4 Nm3/MW of power generation.* *This is how much gas you will need to produce 1 Mw of power

(electricity)

Al Qusais is currently flaring 5,800 Nm3 per hour of Landfill gas. With this amount of gas the power potential is 10 – 12 Mwh with the current gas collection system.

Page 10: Power Gen ME presentation Harnessing Waste Energy

Economics: Landfill Gas Power Generation

• Power generation ( Installed capacity ) = 12 MW • Annual operating hours @ 330 days = 7920 ~ 8000 hrs • PLF (Plant Load Factor) = 90% • Auxiliary consumption : 5% • Net generation : 12*8000*90%*(100-5)% 82080 Mwh

This is equivalent to setting up a 60 MW solar power project at a fraction of the cost

The lowest hanging fruit on the renewable marketsLandfill gas is a power source that can provide sustainable renewable energy. It is an important renewable energy source.

So then why are there not any other Landfill Gas Projects in this region??

Main reasons: Legislation No feed in tariff Waste management strategies

All of this has changed over the past two years and the time has come to recognize that renewable energy and alternatives to fossil fuels is necessary and a global responsibility.

Page 13: Power Gen ME presentation Harnessing Waste Energy

Zero Wastefulness – Recycling Initiatives and Waste management strategies to support sustainable growth.

Regionally there are initiatives to recycle, but recycling is in the early stages of development, which means that there is an opportunity to maximize the existing landfills and capture the energy that is stored in the high organic waste stream that is harming our environment.
