John has over 30 years of progressive experience as a senior electrical engineer, working primarily in power engineering. John has worked as a lead electrical engineer covering all aspects of detailed design and construction for: combined-cycle power generation, substation design, solar, wind turbine generation, nuclear power, power transmission, and emergency power systems for NASA mission control. John has managed a variety of small and large projects, typically ranging in size from $10M to $500M in total installed cost.

PHIL DEL ROSARIO, P.Eng., Senior Process Power Generation Engineer Phil has experience in systems design of equipment components in combined-cycle power generation, including: water treatment, heat recovery steam generator, steam boiler, steam turbine and auxiliaries, steam surface condenser, deaerator, boiler feedwater pumps and tanks, chemical injections, fuel gas systems and gas turbines. With over 35 years of experience in process engineering, he has familiarity with Boiler Code Section 1 as well as API standards and recommended practices, including HRSG API 534, Steam Turbines API 611/612, and Gas Turbines API 616.

BILL KENNEDY, P.Eng., Senior Electrical Power Generation Engineer Bill’s career has spanned over 40 years, and in that time he has become an expert in power system planning, design and operation for utility and industrial power systems, power system protection and regulatory board witnessing. He has conducted multiple interconnection, transient, protection and feasibility studies that have contributed to his extensive knowledge of the electrical industry in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Bill is a published author of 15 technical papers, and was recognized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) for his outstanding contributions to the practice of power system protection and planning.

Upside’s Power Generation team shares many years of combined project experience on numerous projects, from conceptual design through detailed engineering, construction and start-up. The personnel listed have effectively executed client projects individually and together.

S. STEVEN WRIGHT, P.Eng., Senior Mechanical Power Generation Engineer Steven has over 20 years of experience in plant engineering, design, construction, commissioning, operations and maintenance. He has held key roles on power projects for both engineering companies and owner companies. Steve has provided detailed engineering of power generation facilities from 1MW to 300MW resulting in a cumulative plant design exposure of 1440MW. His areas of subject matter expertise include power facilities (particularly with major rotating equipment), steam generation and auxiliary equipment. He has first-hand experience in project permitting while working with regulatory agencies.

ZEYU FORSTER YANG, P.Eng., Senior Electrical Power Generation Engineer With over 35 years of engineering experience, Zeyu’s strengths include designing power generation P&C systems, substations, switchyard, GIS, grounding grids, lightning protection, switchgear, and power transformers. He is an expert at generator, transmission line, distribution feeder, and transformer protections. Zeyu has extensive experience in commissioning, start-up and field construction support. His professional experience includes work in intelligent relays, substation automation systems, RUT, SCADA, breaker control, auto-control of transformer OLTC with capacitor banks, and bus auto transfer.

JING GU, P.Eng., Senior Mechanical Engineer Jing holds over 30 years of experience in mechanical engineering related to the oil and gas, chemical production and processing industries. He has a working knowledge of ASME, ANSI, API, TEMA, ASTM, AISC, CISC, CSA, NBC, ABC and IBC codes. As a senior mechanical engineer, he brings experience in detailed design of various equipment, such as main power stations and emergency power stations, including gas or diesel powered turbines, diesel engines, compressors, generators and energy recovery recuperators.

JOSE AZUCENA, P.Eng., Senior Electrical Power Generation Engineer With over 40 years of engineering experience, Jose has developed technical expertise in electrical power systems. As a Lead P&C engineer, he has engineered and designed the control, protection and distribution of HV, MV and LV facilities. He has developed power system studies, system simulations, load flow, short circuit analysis, power factor correction, arc flash hazard evaluation and mitigation, motor starting simulation, modeling and evaluation of harmonics. He has experience in the maintenance and operation of substations and power stations. Jose holds a graduate level diploma in Power System Protection.

REZA MAHMOUDI, P.Eng., Intermediate Mechanical Power Generation Engineer Reza has over 20 years of experience in engineering, project management and construction. He brings lead engineer expertise to the design and installation of mechanical rotating equipment for gas and steam turbine pumps, compressors and packaged equipment. He has worked on gas turbine driven multi-stage thermodynamic centrifugal gas compression and injection (6200 Psig), and a tornado gas turbine driven multi-stage Sulzer pump for water injection (3900 Psig) and power generation. He has been involved in commissioning, start-up, operation, and maintenance of multiple types or rotating equipment.

ABDEL ZEIN, P.ENG., M.Eng., Senior Mechanical Power Generation Engineer Abdel is a seasoned mechanical engineer with more than 10 years of experience in steam, gas turbines, power plant designing, EPC, manufacturing, construction and commissioning. He has considerable experience with power generation equipment, Gas Turbine ISO 3977, HRSG API 534 design, condensate and demineralization tank design, API 650 storage tanks, piping design and piping codes. His knowledge of relevant industry codes, standards and specifications, specifically with respect to the power plant industry, includes: ASME B31.1, ASME Section VIII div. 1, CSA, API, ASME, ASTM, and TEMA.

INTER PIPELINE LTD.Strathcona Cogeneration PlantInter Pipeline Ltd. (IPL) is currently developing an integrated propane dehydrogenation and polypropylene plant known as the Heartland Petrochemical Complex. As part of this project, IPL intends to build a 96MW cogeneration plant.

Upside supported IPL through front end engineering design of the cogeneration plant by providing:

• Technical support to the project team during the design process, including review and input on technical documentation, drawings, contracts and other project matters;

• Process modeling for fuel gas usage and plant heat balance;

• Preliminary design review of electrical systems, cabling, pipe racks and substation;

• Evaluation of field fabricated versus shop fabricated demineralization tanks and condensate tanks, including preliminary process modeling and sizing;

• Preliminary process modeling and sizing for a temporary flare stack; and

• Class 5 estimates for an optional temporary flare stack, for the addition of turbine bypass stacks, and for optimization of pipe racks, tanks, and electrical systems.

ALTA GASHarmattan CogenerationDesign support for a 10MW power generation system utilizing Solar gas turbines. The facility interfaced generation to an existing substation. The combined cycle system utilized produced steam to enhance the gas plant process systems.

Parkland Power GenerationDesign, review and commissioning of 10MW generation system, five Finning natural gas generators, substation design review and commissioning.

APEX CORPORATIONApex GenerationDetailed design of a 575MW cogeneration utilizing two GE F7A gas turbines, two Voght heat recovery systems and one steam turbine. Provided plant layouts, P&IDs, mechanical layouts, and full EPCM support working with Stone & Webster Engineering Corporation.

COMMONWEALTH EDISONDresden and La Salle Nuclear StationsDesign changes to class 1E emergency power changes in accordance with 10 CFR 50 regulations. Upgraded protective relaying and boiling water reactor hydrogen chemistry system.

EL DORADO ENERGYGKO Sargent LundyProvided design support for a combined-cycle generation with four Westinghouse 185MW turbines and a 10MW solar panel power system. The site was located in the desert, providing challenging conditions for turbine and generator systems. Construction support and commissioning was also provided.

EPCORGenesee Power PlantReplacement of the generator GEC Alstom excitation system. This included development of engineering packages for harmonic mitigation, replacing transformer and control racks. Outage time was minimized through strategic staging.

ESSOKearl OilsandsCompleted design of a 100MW steam generation unit. Design included single lines, system utilities, power studies and follow-up on modular design and construction of system modules fabricated in Korea.

LG&E WESTMORELANDPower System StudyAssessed existing emergency power system for military facility. Reviewed existing drawings and site inspection of emergency power systems. This consisted of diesel generation, and invertor UPS systems. Evaluated 45MW power system for Stone & Webster Engineering Corporation. Provided due diligence report.

NASA MISSION CONTROLEmergency Cogeneration UpgradeScope consisted of design report to allow networking 1.5MW to 3MW generators. The generators varied from 1960s to 2000 year models. Generation was manually controlled for over 15 units varying from simple-cycle units to full combined-cycle gas turbines. The upgrade implemented full automation of all generators to start and load share. This was accomplished with Woodward governor control additions.

PETRO CANADAFort Hills OPPFront end engineering design of an ore preparation plant. This included design of the power system, including 35kV and 5kV distribution systems, design of a 20MW cogeneration unit, large electrical buildings, and substations.

SHELL CANADARemote SitesIslanded power generation for remote sites 3, 5, and 6 well configurations utilizing capstone generation units (300kW, 600kW, and 900kW units). This design utilized 80,000 rpm micro turbines.

Jumping Pound Gas PlantAddition of a 3MW natural gas generation (simple cycle), and new installation of a Cummins Waukesha unit with GE generator and 5kV switchgear.

WASCANA ENERGY (NEXEN)Hay River GenerationFront end engineering design for the Hay River Generation utilizing GE LM6000 gas turbine for plant power. Developed site plans, process flow, single line drawings and utility interface with Northwest Territories Power Corporation.
