Power

Hydrogen’s Power practice specialises in sourcing mid to senior level professionals with scarce, in-demand skills for the UK and European new build, outage and upgrade power generation landscape, including biomass, W2E and nuclear projects. Listed on the London Stock Exchange, Hydrogen is a global specialist recruitment business placing professionals in over 70 countries worldwide. Our joined up global practices operate from a network of offices across the UK as well as Asia, Australasia, EMEA and the Americas.

We place over 200 highly skilled, senior level power specialists a year. Our clients typically fall into one of two categories: energy providers and contracting companies. We find engineers for both who are experienced in construction, outage/maintenance, overhalls and conversions. Typical roles we work on include, but are not limited to:

> Commissioning experts > Contract managers > CSWIP welding inspectors > EH&S managers / advisors > Mechanical / electrical / C&I engineers > Planning engineers

> Plant operators > Process engineers > Project managers > QA / QC managers / engineers > Safety case engineers / authors > Site managers

> We proactively map the UK power landscape, constantly adding to our candidate pools. This means that when roles become available, we are able to present clients with a short list of pre-screened candidates that won’t be available anywhere else, sometimes within hours. We can then quickly mobilise these individuals or teams

> Our candidate pool is unique. We understand that businesses such as yours prefer to hire highly-skilled local residents and returning nationals as opposed to costly expatriates with visa implications. We represent large numbers of expats who have worked across the global power regions and who are looking for a return home to the UK. For these candidates, remuneration is no longer their key driver; they are looking for a UK-based role which fits with their lifestyle requirements

> We build long-term relationships with our candidates, often working with them for years. Many work with us exclusively to find them their next global move. Because we carefully match candidate to client, and offer comprehensive post placement care, we have a high candidate retention level

Why our clients and candidates work with us?

Power

I have found Hydrogen’s Power practice to operate at the highest level, providing quality personnel and staying in contact with myself (the client) and their contractors without becoming an irritation. They have visited this site several times, speaking in person to contractors, making themselves available at all times and not hesitating to respond to any difficulties they may be experiencing. A most professional company.” Steve Goodwin Boiler subject area manager REU Project

Case studiesAlstom: Number 1 commissioning supplier for UK and Europe

RequirementH&S and QA / QC inspectors required onsite for the biomass and eco storage projects commencing in 2012.

SolutionHydrogen met with Drax’s head of procurement, head of HR and heads of engineering in December 2011 to receive the project overview and initial role specifications. Immediately, our extensive network of qualified H&S and QA/QC professionals came into play, allowing us to quickly identify a pool of suitable candidates with relevant project experience, who were immediately available. Our network of engineers across renewable and green technologies ensured we were able to deliver the required experience despite is sitting outside of standard thermal projects.

OutcomesWe quickly made three placements: a quality engineer to oversee outage work, a H&S advisor and a quality inspector. Highly flexible, these specialists have become Drax’s ‘eyes and ears’, overseeing the work of the onsite contractors on both day and night shifts. To date, we have placed five contractors onsite to assist the project in line with our client’s requirements and Drax’s hiring managers are confident in our ability to deliver across future phases of the project.

Drax Group plc. Coal to biomass conversion - Drax power station, Selby

Requirement When Alstom Power Systems and Alstom Power Service merged in 2009, they had a large number of global projects on their order book. The simultaneous commissioning of such a large volume of sites resulted in one of the most significant and complex recruitment and staff mobilisation programmes of 2009/2010.

Solution Alstom’s existing recruitment partners were experiencing difficulties in finding the exact skill-sets required to complete these projects. The roles required included highly specialised electrical engineers, HRSG, BOP and WSC engineers and CCGT / CHP operators.

Our consultants took time to fully understand the culture of the company, the technical and commercial skill sets required to match the specific job specifications and the personal attributes required. Subsequently, we successfully placed 85 contractors, many of who have either remained at Alstom following contract extensions or have been relocated to other projects around the world following the completion of their original contract.

Outcomes Our quick response, surety of international and local supply, and value-added service has saved Alstom time and money. Their PSL has been reduced from 72 to 8 and for every 1.3 candidates we put forward for interview, one is offered a position. Having successfully proven our commitment to service and delivery excellence, Alstom officially awarded Hydrogen PSL status in August 2009 and since this time we have become their No.1 supplier.

E-on: Ratcliffe on Soar - major boiler outage / SCR upgrade projects

Requirement A senior boiler construction manager initially had a need for a quality engineer to come in and represent Eon during the night shift of the 2010 boiler outage. Due to the shortage of permanently employed engineers at Eon willing to work on nights they needed our services to help provide an immediately available, qualified engineer.

Solution Having a thorough understanding of the main contractors working on the outage project we knew we had to find someone that was familiar and capable of working with and controlling a specific large contracting company. Through our constant networking with specialist engineers we were recommended three individuals who suited the role well and were immediately available.

Outcomes Within two days we organised for the client to interview the three candidates. After the first candidate was interviewed the client decided that he didn’t need to meet anyone else and that the individual would suit the role perfectly. The candidate lived locally to the project and was able to start on the following Monday.

The project work happening at Ratcliffe is due to go on until 2014. Because the client was very impressed with our ability to quickly find such a suitable candidate he recommended us to his colleague managing the SCR upgrade project. We now have four quality engineers working at Ratcliffe in total covering both of the major projects. Two candidates working on nights and two working on days.

EDF: CIT West Burton CCGT projectRequirement We have been working with EDF-CIT since 2009, placing specialist candidates onto EDF Energy’s new build 1300MW CCGT power station project in Lincolnshire.

For their first UK-based CCGT project, they required English speaking technical engineers to represent them on site during the construction and commissioning phases of the project. Our consultants worked closely with EDF-CIT to gauge their requirements in terms of skill-sets, cultural fit and technical ability.

Solution We have sourced and secured a total of 15 long term placements since the commencement of the project, transitioning them into the project seamlessly. Examples of candidates placed include: HRSG erection supervisor, nightshift lead piping supervisor, electrical erection supervisor, lead electrical commissioning technician, turbine centre line supervisor, mechanical and electrical contracts manager and lead shift commissioning operators.

Outcomes In December 2011, the project suffered a major setback when, due to the particularly cold weather, one of the HRSG units cracked causing major structural damage. We were quickly able to source a piping and HRSG specialist to assist EDF-CIT with the dismantle and rebuild work performed by the specialist contractor brought in to do the repairs.

We continue to act as a trusted supplier of key personnel to help drive the project to completion.

Whilst many recruiters are location focused, Hydrogen believes the best way to deliver service to its clients and candidates is to base our offering around these practices, which cover both Technical & Scientific (Power, Mining, Oil & Gas and Life Sciences), and Professional Support Services (Business Transformation, Finance, Legal, Trading & Advisory and Technology). By being practice led and using the latest technology we provide our clients with global visibility of the best candidates.

We invest in building strong relationships with candidates over the long-term, not just when they are actively looking to move.
