Welcome to the latest issue of Power News - The Fittest Strength Magazine on Earth™.

Like promised in the previous issue we will cover more Fitness also - and even our cover is decorated with Bikini Fitness International winner India Paulino - it is not the only fitness we cover...See the 4-page report from the first Strongman Fitness® World Championships, too.

Like in the past, this spring issue is dedicated to the original Arnold Sports Festival and it´s strength & fitness events along with other great happenings we have witnessed during the first months of the year.

ASF - a festival some like and some don´t...some say, it is just a freak circus trying to make business to someone´s pockets etc...I would say that it is a lot more...it is maybe the largest strength sports happening in the world and now it also goes to two other continentals, too.

It is also a great place to spot icons of these sports, starting from the the one and only: Arnold. It is also a major economical raise for the Columbus district yearly.

Yes, the expo feels crowded and the long distances between the venues might stop someone to see all interested events...but, when you learn to use the free shuttles and plan your program well ahead with the action you want to see...you will be involved in a happening what rather can be called as strength/fitness fanatics Mekka - a place must for a visit once a year.

Along with ASF this magazine cover action from all over Scandinavia including the first (Strong) Women´s Scandinavian Championships and also we are introducing the United Strongmen® World Records,

We also introduce a man behing a camera - Ray Novak - the official photographer for American Strongman Corporation.

UNITED STRONGMEN® WOMEN´S SCANDINAVIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS 2013

Queen of the Castle™ - Sponsored by Fitnesstukku was the happening, where the winner was awarded with the title of first ever United Strongmen® Women`s Scandinavian Champion. The competition took place in the castle city of Hämeenlinna, Finland and this time the venue was Verkatehdas - a modern art & culture centre. The events were performed in theater stage and without a doubt it can be said, that it was the most premium strongman/woman contest in Finland ever.

The action started with last woman standing log lift with 10kg raises from 60kg starter. Two were above the others in this event as Annina Saine (FIN) took 80kg without any problems, but did not go further due shoulder injury. The winner of the event was Kati Luoto (FIN) with 90kg.

The second event was the deadlift for reps , where the competitors faced approx 210kg ”Flintstones”-bar and regular 160kg bar with the rule that , if you get any rep with 210, you´ll win any reps with 160kg. Again in this event two were above others, but this time Luoto (3 reps) was followed by Anki Öberg´s (SWE) 2 reps while all the others could not get the big one up.

In the third event the ladies had to run 10 meter duck wlak and then flip 250kg tire for 5 flips. Like in the previous events the top names were Luoto, Öberg and Saine.

In the pictures from left up:Kati Luoto (FIN) repping with 210kg stone-bar.Thora Thorsteinsdottir (ICE) repping with 160kg.Kikki Berli-Johnsen (NOR) in duck walk.Alina Leisiö (FIN) in tire flip.Lise Gangstad (NOR) in sack carry.

Page 5: Power News - The Fittest Strength Magazine on Earth™ #2-2013

4th event was the sack carry, where the competitors picked up 86kg Ironmind sack and carried it as far as possible with 10 meter turns. Top3: 1. Luoto, 2. Öberg, 3. Leisiö.

In the farmers hold with 2x102kg the familiar women kept the charge with a little changes between them...1. Luoto, 2. Saine, 3. Öberg.

The last event was the Atlas-Stones ranging from 50kg to the ”Monster Babe”, which is 137kg stone with 52cm diameter..made with authentic Slater Stone mold..the ”Monster Babe” was introduced at the first time in US Women´s World Championships 2012, where no-one could lift it - this time it was more nearer to get a new WR as Sweden´s Anki Öberg hauled the stone up to her lap, but missed the lift to the platform..Kati Luoto also aired the stone, but this time the ”Monster Babe” was still the Queen of stones :)

In the stones we also witnessed the some special moments, while Finland´s Alina Leisiö cutted 116kg stone in half, what caused a small jury-meeting to make up the things fairly over the event..no problems, the referees Janne Virtanen and Jyrki Rantanen made the calls and no one had complaints about the points, so all clear.Top3 in stones: 1. Öberg, 2. Luoto, 3. Gangstad.

1. Kati Luoto 7 pts2. Anki Öberg 13,5 pts3. Annina Saine 20 pts4. Alina Leisiö, 27,5 pts5. Lise Gangstad, 28,5 pts6. Thora Thorsteinsdottir, 34,5 pts7. Kikki Berli-Johnsen 37 pts

! During this time of year where the Spring is coming to a close and the Summer is just around the corner, what is everyone thinking about? Summer vacation, getting out of school, and of course the pool scene and looking aesthetically pleasing to the eye. As far as the latter is concerned, in our industry, what is the purpose and what is the price that these means are achieved? Even a more pressing question is simply put in one word, and that is “why?” Would it be for contest purposes, to get another person to “like” them for how they look on the outside, or is there another underlying reason that varies from individual to individual?! One thing that must be addressed is the signs that we miss. In addition, not only the signs that are missed, but the crashes that occur. I am not talking about crashes in energy, but in a more figurative sense such as a car crash. Whether it be to slow down on a goal or if there is a stop sign that one has missed, how easy is it for these things to slip whenever one doesn’t have a strong support network around them? I am sure that no matter how long someone has been in this industry or has wanted to accomplish a goal of this type, there are way too many “car crashes” that have been occurring. Furthermore, in wanting to make sure that one’s goals are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time Stamped), sometimes we get a bit overzealous in wanting to reach too far too fast. In doing this, we do not catch the yield signs, stop signs, or even the school zones in which we need to do a little bit more research in what our goals truly mean. And in neglecting these “signs”, this can lead to some type of “ticket”. Not only can this lead to a ticket so to speak, but this can actually lead to death.! Coming alongside someone, such as in the fitness industry or even in the medical field, is all about responding to the call of duty. I have no certification whatsoever, which may be a blessing in disguise, regardless if it is the Hippocratic Oath or the ACE Code of Ethics. What I am getting at is if one sees a “car crash” alongside of the road, that person is obligated to help in some way, shape, or form. If that person just keeps passing by crashes, then what good is their respective standard that they agreed to uphold? This may backfire on me, but this is what a whole slew of big corporate gyms are guilty of, which is a reason why I know it is a blessing that I do not have a certification yet. However, in being blessed to have my foot in the door with a fitness company that holds themselves to the highest of standards, I know that they are holding me very accountable to making sure that I respond accordingly to the “car crashes” that occur on a daily basis. Even though it took two whole years of finding a fitness center that I could plug into due to the love for this industry, the last thing that I did was speed through the signs and paid attention to why “crashes” were happening.! I would like to give quick thanks as well as encouragement. First, I would like to thank the company called Equinox that has made room for me in their family, for when it is time for me to receive my certification to personal train clients that I keep helping and keep learning new things. And last, I encourage my fellow United Strongmen and Strongwomen to pull over whenever they see a “crash” and respond to the call of duty and help however they are able to. Have a great and safe Summer season.

Arnold Sport Festival,

Maybe the biggest happening in strength/fitness industry in the world...nearly 200 000 spectators over the weekend, around 20 000 athletes in over 40 events + enermous amount of booths in the actual expo.

It is a strength/fitness fanatics Mekka, where you just need to travel once every year.

Along with the numerouns top of the line championships competitions you have the rare opportunities to meet and see in action the the great strength legends like Magnus Ver Magnusson and Ed Coan...does someone need an introduction, who they are?

But it is not alone World Championships, legends and big sales for the companies working in this genre...it is also a place where hundreds of young ahtletes are (maybe starting) their competative career in events which may be totally different that we see here..cheerleading, table-tennis etc..a lot more than just iron game...even thought that is the game there. And it is also the channel for new/old events to step out big time - like the Highland Games did this year.

Strongman Fitness® World Championships 2013

Women under 150lbs (68,2kg) and Men under 175lbs (79,5kg) are the new Strongman Fitness® classes created by American Strongman Corporation and competited around the globe.2013 was the time for first World Championships and later this year there will be also the first European Championships, too (read more on page 29).

In these first World Championships the hosts were little cruel as Kirsi Järvi from Finland was the only non-american in the finals, but maybe next year the europeans will raise more as the event is getting more popular on that side of Atlantic Ocean also.

The whole 3 x World´s competition (Strongman Fitness x 2 classes + Amateur men) were held on the same time, so the total number of athletes was over 70 and they all did the same events in the qualifications as well in the finals.Naturally the weights were different for each class.

The events were: Axle reps, Yoke & drag, DL medley and loading & wheelbarrow for the qualification and Giant DB, Husafell and Stone for reps in the finals.

In women´s class one was over the others as Alanna Casey won 4/7 events and in all others except yoke/drag she was was 2nd (yoke/drag 5th). Yoke/Drag was won by Janne Grandalen-Flo, Deadlift Medley Maya Winters and Stone over the bar by Kimberly Baum.

In men´s class Travis Lucas did the same - won 4/7 events while in other events he surrendered a little more, than Alanna did in women´s class. Husafell was won by Brandon McDonald, DL by Shane Jerman and Yoke & Drag by Jon Alderson. In the photo below, the only European in the finals - Kirsi Järvi (FIN) in the stone lift.

Arnold Amateur Strongman World Championships 2013

Arnold Amateur Strongman World Championships is already legendary ASC competition, which is organized in Arnold Sport Festival..Each year the winner of the competition is getting a spot to the Arnold Strongman Classic and so far the names like Hafbor Björsson, Mike Jenkins and Adam Scherr have done that step. For 2014 the step belongs to Mihail Shivliakov, who after many years of improvent took the victory this time with superb 15,5 pts difference before Lou Costa. In the competition there was 41 competitors, so it was clear that there was no room for mistakes in the qualification events if you were willing to go to the top10, which were the ones continuing to the finals day.Mihail did solid work and stayed inside of top4 in each event thru the competition - except in the last event, where the situation was already clear.See the full results on next page.

Arnold Strongman Classic 2013

As usual Arnold Strongman Classic had a stunishing field of competitors fighting about some of the biggest cash prizes in strongman circus. The competition was shrugged down to four events and as usual some of them were heavier than ever...maybe even too heavy as in the stone lift we had to witness three competitors hurting their biceps.

In overall there was new king of the competition as Lithuania´s Vytaulas Lalas edged out Brian Shaw. It all came down to last event, where Shaw was not able to do the required reps for the win. Brian suffered biceps injury in 2012 competition and after some setbacks he´s coming back stronger..maybe a re-run in WSM with Lalas?Above Lalas winning the Austrian Oak. Left (above) Shaw fighting with the Giant DB.Letf Misha Koklayev always putting on a great show.

Mark Felix demonstrated once again, why he is one of the greatest deadlifters in the history by hauling up this (shirtless) Hummer Tire - deadlift of 1122 lbs. And there was plenty of space for more.

Both days were their own competitions and the first one was won by Andrew Durniat and on the second day was won by Mike Burke.
