In terms of revenue, the metal construction and mechanical engineering indus-try is the state’s second largest manufacturing sector after food production: more than 10,000 employees generate some €3.3 billion in annual sales.Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is home to several major companies in this indus-try, such as the Hydraulik Nord Group headquartered in Parchim, Nordex AG, Mecklenburger Metallguss GmbH in Waren (Müritz), and Liebherr-MCCtec GmbH in Rostock, as well as Eisengießerei Torgelow GmbH. The Malaysian Genting Group has also recognized the state’s outstanding locational advantages and is having its cruise ships built at the shipyards in Wismar, Stralsund, and Rostock-Warnemünde.In line with global trends, the “Regional Innovation Strategy 2020 for the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern” includes the development and use of new technolo-gies as one of its key elements. This strategy defines priorities for the promotion of research, development, and innovation – from applied science at the state’s academic institutions to market introduction.

Mega wind energy with NordexNordex ranks among the most technologically advanced suppliers for megawatt-class wind turbines. In Rostock, the company builds its Generation Delta, the fourth generation of its proven multi-me-gawatt platform (with the N100/3300, N117/3000, N131/3000, and N131/3300, which was developed for the German market). The joint company Nordex and Acciona Windpower has installed over 18 GW of wind power capacity in more than 25 markets and cur-rently employs over 4,800 people. The Rostock facility is part of the company’s global production network, which also includes plants in Spain, Brazil, and the US, with another soon to be added in India.

Liebherr (Rostock facility)With its approx. 1,500 employees, the Rostock plant of Liebherr, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of construction equipment, enjoys global market access, literally right in front of the factory gates: at its facility, located directly on the quayside of Rostock’s Baltic Sea port, the company has been developing and producing ship, mobile harbor, and offshore cranes since 2005. This location offers invaluable logistical advantages for the worldwide distribution of these cranes and other large equipment, such as reachstackers and components for container cranes.Founded in 2009, the Liebherr Academy Rostock provides a plat-form for sharing the company’s practical expertise with the region through vocational and continuing training, as well as courses for professionals and managers. The Academy also helps prepare young, skilled workers for entering the employment market.

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is not only located centrally on the main north-south and east-west routes through Europe, but also has its own seaports, which provide direct access to global markets. Internationally competitive companies in marine equipment, shipbuilding, precision and special-purpose machinery, automotive, aerospace, and offshore wind energy industries play an active and pivotal role in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Over the past several years, they have proven themselves worthy competitors in a wide range of industrial sectors. Many of them are global market leaders.

In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, research, development, and practical application go hand in hand; the Liebherr Academy Rostock is a shining example of this approach.Another high-caliber, joint research project in the state is the collaboration between the company Mecklenburger Metallguss GmbH (MMG) and scientists from the Frau-nhofer Application Center Large Structures in Produc-tion Engineering (Fraunhofer AGP), which cooperates closely with the University of Rostock and the company Ingenieur- und Maschinenbau GmbH (IMG). This pro-ject was set up to investigate various application scenarios

for robotics. The first objective was the use of a large robot to drill high-precision marking holes on marine propellers for ocean-going giants. Modern laser measurement tech-nologies enable this huge robotic system to maintain an exceptionally high level of precision. Thanks to this inge-nious combination of technologies, the project has been a great success for all partners and now offers an excellent basis for further R&D work.

with the company Forschungs-GmbH Wismar, which offers a variety of services, including the organization of cooperative projects connecting companies with students of the dual program for mechanical engineering. The Hochschule Wismar also offers advanced training programs for em-ployees from the metal construction and mechanical engineering industry.

Applied research is embedded in the guiding principle of the Fachhoch-schule Stralsund University of Applied Sciences: “understanding reality – facing challenges – creating future.” The University actively promotes in-ternational scientific cooperation, fosters close relationships with industry, and sees itself as a partner for small and medium-sized companies in the region of Vorpommern. Mechanical engineering students gain real-world work experience and have excellent career prospects after graduation.

The agency mv4you was founded to help meet the growing demand for highly qualified professionals and managers. It provides information for individuals who would like to live and work in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, helps compa-nies meet personnel challenges, and offers a full range of employee-recruitment services. The agency partners with ministries, business associations, chambers of industry and commerce, employment and economic development agencies, organisations, and initiatives of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

The metal construction and mechanical engineering industry of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has been cooperating closely with universities and other research institutions for many years. Innovations and scientific breakthroughs are turned into production processes and commercial products instead of collecting dust in the “ivory tower.”

» By making research an important priority of our bu-siness-development strategy, we have become the world market leader for marine propellers. Our collaborati-on with scientific institutions and involvement in joint research projects form the backbone of MMG’s R&D work. This approach enables us to stay a step ahead in meeting our customers’ requirements and keep our pro-pellers on the cutting edge of innovation worldwide. «
