The injector may be colocated with the Gigabit Ethernet switch in your telecom closet. Alternatively, the injector may be located remotely (near the Array). Choose the installation option that is best for you.

STEP 2 Run CablingRun Cat 5e or Cat 6 cabling from the Gigabit Ethernet switch to the injector, and from the injector to the Array. The injector requires RJ-45 termination on the cables. For the XN12 and XN16 you may need to run two cables, depending on the type of injector and/or whether redundant connections are desired (see the table on page 2).

To use the management option on a smart injector (XP1-MSI-75M, XP2-MSI-95M, XP8-MSI-70M,) you need one more Ethernet cable to connect the injector’s management port to a 10 Mb port on a network switch.

NOTE: The total Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable length from the switch to the Array must be no more than 100 m, including all cable segments.

NOTE: The Array must be connected to PoGE networks without routing cabling to the outside plant—this ensures that cabling is not exposed to lightning strikes or possible crossover from high voltage.

STEP 3 Mounting the InjectorThe injector may be located near the Ethernet switch or near the Array, whichever is more convenient for you.

The injector must be located indoors. It may be simply placed on a secure surface, such as a shelf, or you may mount it with your own hardware, using the two tabs on the outside of the injector. The 8-port Injector may be rack-mounted. Also, a rack-mount kit is available to mount two of the dual-port injectors in a rack. Contact Xirrus for information.

STEP 4 Connect Power and DataPower and data connections may be made in any order - the order of connection will not affect operation.

Connect the Injector:1. Plug the supplied power cord into the back of the injector unit and

into a dedicated AC power outlet (100 - 240 VAC).

If the unit has an ON LED, it should light up. For detailed information on the LEDs, see Managing the Injector Using SNMP.

2. Connect the installed data cable run (i.e., the cable that goes to the Array) to the injector’s OUT port. If using a second port on this injector for the XN12/XN16, connect the second cable run to a second OUT port.

3. Using another data cable, connect the injector’s IN port to a Gigabit Ethernet port on your switch. For dual XN12/XN16 connections, similarly connect a second IN port to another switch port. Be sure to use corresponding IN and OUT ports on the injector.

4. To use the management option on a smart injector, use one more data cable to connect the injector’s Management Port to a 10 Mb Ethernet port on your switch.

Connect the Array Cables (XN4/XS4):1. The Array should be dismounted at this point. Feed the Cat 5e

cable through the access opening on the Array mounting plate. For more information, see the installation information in the Xirrus Array User’s Guide, and any mounting instructions supplied separately with Array mounting hardware.

2. Connect the Cat 5e data cable from the injector to the Array’s GIGABIT POE port (older models are labeled GIGABIT1).

3. Skip to When all connections are complete: on page 6.

Connect the Array Cables (All other models): 1. The Array should be dismounted at this point. Feed the Cat 5e

cable(s) through the access opening on the Array mounting plate. For the XN12 and XN16, you may use two PoGE connections. For more information, see the installation information in the Xirrus Array User’s Guide, and any mounting instructions supplied separately with Array mounting hardware.

2. Connect the Cat 5e data cable(s) from the injector to the Array Data and Power IN port(s). Figure 3 shows the dual IN ports on an XN12/XN16. Other models (XN8, XS8, XS16) have only one IN port.

NOTE: Do not connect the cable from the injector directly to a Gigabit port! It must be connected to an IN port (on the right in Figure 3).

3. Connect a supplied short orange Cat 5e data cable from a Data OUT port to GIGABIT1 as shown in Figure 3. If using dual PoGE connections for an XN12/XN16, connect the other Data OUT port to GIGABIT2. Connect any additional Ethernet and serial cables as required.

When all connections are complete:1. Mount the Array on the mounting plate.

2. The injector’s CONNECT LED will light (green) after it senses a good connection to a Xirrus Array drawing power normally.

3. On the Array, verify that the GIG1 or GIG2 LED is on, and that the LED boot sequence begins.

4. If your injector is a non-managed model (XP1-MSI-75), installation and setup are complete. For managed models, continue to Step 5.

Connect OUT ports to GIGABIT1 and GIGABIT2 ports with short cables

STEP 5 Managing the Injector (managed models only)There are three ways to manage the injector.

XMS

We recommend managing the injector using XMS, the Xirrus Management System. Once XMS has discovered the injector and you have described the Array port(s) which it drives, XMS will be able to turn injector port(s) off and back on. This allows you to power-cycle the connected Arrays via XMS, the same tool that you use for the rest of your Wi-Fi network management. See Using XMS to Manage the Injector on page 15 for details.

SNMP

Managed injectors may be controlled directly via SNMP. See Managing the Injector Using SNMP on page 18 for details.

The Injector’s Web Management Interface (WMI)

The injector has its own web-based GUI that allows you to change settings and control the unit via a browser on your computer. You must prepare the injector for discovery and management by XMS. Use the Injector WMI for this purpose.

To allow XMS to discover the injector, the injector must have a static IP address and it must use the SNMP read-write community string expected by XMS. You should also change the injector’s factory password to enhance security.

Prepare the injector for management by XMS with the following steps:

Determine the injector’s IP address

If your network has a DHCP server:

By default, the injector uses DHCP to get an IP address. The simplest way to give the injector a static IP address is for the network administrator to configure the network’s DHCP server with a reserved lease (fixed IP address) for the injector. If you have a reserved lease, proceed to “Start the injector’s Web Management Interface” on page 9.

If your network has no DHCP server:

If there is no DHCP server on the network, the injector uses its factory default IP address: 10.0.2.5, subnet mask: 255.255.255.0, default gateway: 10.0.2.1. This is the same default subnetwork used by Xirrus Wi-Fi Arrays. Use these instructions to prepare your computer to connect to the injector.

Use an Ethernet cable to connect an Ethernet port on your computer (we’ll call it the Computer Port) to the Management Port on the injector.

Next, you must change the IP address of your Computer Port, so that it is on the same subnet as the injector. Use one of the following procedures.

For Windows Vista

From the Windows Start button, open the Control Panel. Under Network and Internet, select View Network Status and Tasks. On the left under Tasks, click Manage Network Connections.

When the Network Connections window is displayed, find your Computer Port. Double-click it, then click the Properties button. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 and click Properties.

In the TCP/IP properties window, click Use the following IP address. Set the IP address to 10.0.2.6, and set the Subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. Click OK, then click Close.

For Windows XP

From the Windows Start button, open the Control Panel and double-click Network Connections.

In the Network Connections window, find your Computer Port. Double-click it and select Properties. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button.

In the TCP/IP properties window, click Use the following IP address. Set the IP address to 10.0.2.6, and set the Subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. Click OK, then Close.

Start the injector’s Web Management Interface In a browser, enter the following URL (in upper case),

http://XIRRUS-AABBCCwhere AABBCC is the last 6 digits of the injector’s MAC address (i.e., the last three octets) from the label on the unit. Do not type any colon separators.

You may use the injector’s IP address in the URL, instead of the host name.

Log in with the user name admin and the password admin.

To enhance security, change the user name and the password for logging in to the injector. The user name and password must be between 5 and 30 characters long.

1. Click Admin Management on the left of the window.

2. Enter a New Username and a New Password. Repeat the password in the Verify Password field. Click the Save button.

3. Be sure to record these new values in a safe place, since there is no way to access the injector’s web interface without them. This is the only user account on the injector.

Change IP address (if not using DHCP) or host name

If you are not using DHCP, then you must assign the injector a unique, static IP address that is part of your network. Be very careful not to duplicate an IP address that is used (or may in the future be used) elsewhere in your network.

1. Click Network on the left of the window.

2. If desired, enter a new Hostname.

3. Click the Static radio button.

4. If needed, enter a new IP Address, IP Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway.

5. Enter the IP address of the Primary DNS and Secondary DNS servers used on your network. The injector uses the DNS server to locate an SNTP time server.

6. Click the Save button.

7. Note that when you change the IP address, your connection with the web interface will be terminated. When you change any network settings, a “quick reboot” occurs (injector ports revert to their last explicitly saved state—they will not be cycled through the Off state if the saved state is On). You can restart the web interface by reentering the new hostname or IP address.

8. Once the IP address, host name and SNMP community string have been configured, the PoGE device can be discovered by XMS. See “Using XMS to Manage the Injector” on page 15.

This window manages the injector’s PoGE OUT port(s) and displays their status. Note that all ports are On by default, and rebooting restores all ports to the last saved state (or On, if no saved state exists).

You can manage a port by turning it off (no power or data is transmitted) or on, or by clicking the (power) Cycle button. This provides the ability to remotely power-cycle and reboot an Array if necessary, by turning power off and then on again. Note that for an XN12 or XN16 Array using two PoGE connections, you will need to turn off both connected injector ports at the same time and then turn them on to reboot the Array.

1. Click Port Control on the left of the window.

2. The Port Control window displays the status of all of the injector’s OUT ports:

• Off—The port is disabled.• On—The port is enabled, and is connected to an Array.• No connections—The port is enabled, but is not connected to an

Array (technically, a compliant load has not been detected). • Fault—The port has an internal problem. See “Troubleshooting

the Injector/ LEDs” on page 20.3. Click a port’s Off button to disable it; click On to enable it. Click

Cycle to power-cycle the Array by turning the port off and on again.

4. To turn all ports on or off or power-cycle them at once, use the Enable All Ports, Disable All Ports, or Cycle All Ports buttons.

5. Click Save Port State (bottom right) to save the current on/off port settings. If the injector is rebooted, these saved states will be restored.

Set SNMP Community Strings

This window sets the Community Strings used by SNMP to manage the injector. These strings are used like passwords for access to devices. The read-write community string must be set to the same value that you will use in XMS for managing injectors.

1. Click SNMP on the left of the window.

2. Enter the SNMP Community Strings:

• Read-Write Community String—this string is required for changing settings and performing actions on the injector. The factory default value for the SNMP Read-Write Community String is xirrus. XMS also uses this default value.

• Read-Only Community String—this string allows you to read information from the injector, such as status information. The factory default value for the SNMP Read-Only Community String is xirrus_read_only.

• Maximum length is 30 characters for each string.3. Click the Save button.

If you wish to have the injector send SNMP traps to a specified host when the status of any port changes, please see Managing the Injector Using SNMP on page 18.

Reboot or Restore Factory DefaultsThe System Tools page contains tools for the following functions:

Reboot

The current settings are restored after a reboot, except that all ports will be set to their last explicitly saved state. If you uploaded a new software image, the injector will use that software after the reboot.

1. Click System Tools on the left of the window. (Figure 8)

2. Click Reboot. Leave the listen for field at the default (0). The listen for field should only be used at the direction of Xirrus Customer Support. The injector ports are turned off for the number of seconds specified. The following message will be displayed.

3. Rebooting typically takes under a minute. Your connection to the Injector WMI will be terminated, and you will have to start a new session. The reboot message provides a link that you may click to reconnect to the WMI:

Your device is now located at: http://XIRRUS-AABBCC

You may also access the injector directly using its IP address, as shown in the reboot message. In case of problems, you can enter the following at the Command Prompt in Windows (the command is case-sensitive):

nbtstat -R

This will clear your computer’s internal cache of previously found address mappings, forcing the new host name or IP address to be located properly.

Restore Factory Defaults

This feature allows you to restore all of the injector’s settings to their factory default values.

1. Click System Tools on the left of the window. (Figure 8)

2. Click the Restore Defaults button.

Install a new software image

The smart injector contains a system tool to perform a software upgrade. In the unlikely event that Xirrus issues a software update for the injector, please see Xirrus Customer Support for upgrade directions.

Using XMS to Manage the InjectorThe Xirrus Management System (XMS) is the recommended way to manage your network of Xirrus Arrays and injectors. You must set up the injector as described in Managing the Injector on page 7 to allow XMS to discover it. Then you may perform the following steps to start managing the injector with XMS.

Add the injector to XMS—the XMS Discovery process adds the injector to XMS’s managed devices database.

Associate the injector with an Array—tell XMS which Array(s) are connected to each injector.

Manage the injector with XMS-turn the injector on or off to save power at night or reboot the Array.

Add the injector to XMSXMS Discovery will automatically find powered-up injectors that are reachable from the XMS server’s network.

1. In an XMS client window, click Tools in the menu bar. Select Discover Devices. The Discover Devices window appears.

2. In the Discovered Devices section, see if the desired injector is listed. Its Type column will say PoGE Injector. The injector must be powered up in order to be discovered. If the injector is listed, skip to “Associate the injector with an Array” on page 16.

3. In the Search SNMP Community Name(s) section, verify that the read-write community string defined in “Set SNMP Community Strings” on page 12 is listed. If not, click Add to enter it. It is crucial that the read-write string used by the injector and by XMS match.

4. In the Search Network(s) section, verify that the subnetwork(s) containing injector(s) are listed, and that they are enabled. If not, click Add to enter them. After a few seconds the system generates a message informing you that the discovery process has started on the newly added network.

5. Discovery normally runs at scheduled times. To launch discovery immediately on a network, clear its Enabled checkbox and then click it again to re-enable it.

6. You may add an injector to the Discovered Devices section explicitly, using its IP address. Click Add at the bottom of the section, and enter the injector. If the injector is detected by XMS it is added to the list, otherwise an error message is displayed. In this case, check the IP address that you entered.

Associate the injector with an ArrayOnce XMS has discovered the injector, you must tell XMS which Array(s) are connected to it. Both the injector and the Array(s) must already be listed in Discovered Devices before you may proceed.

1. From the Tools menu, select PoGE Management. The PoGE Injector and Array Port Mapping window appears.

2. Click the Injectors tab and find the row for the desired injector. The row shows the number of ports on the injector. Note that the icons

indicate ports that are available for connection—injector ports

that are not yet associated with an Array port. If a port already has an association, then the connected Array port is displayed.

Click the icon for the port that you want to associate with an Array. The mapping dialog appears.

3. Find the row for the desired Array. Click the “unused port” icon for the Array port that is connected to the selected injector port. The PoGE Injector and Array Port Mapping window (Figure 11) shows the new connection.

4. To delete a connection from XMS, click the blue for that port. To view the associations by Array, click the Arrays tab.

Manage the injector with XMS1. Open the XMS client’s Resources > Arrays window. To display

the PoGE Status column, click the Column Selector button at the upper right of the Array Throughput graph. PoGE Status displays the status of injector ports connected to an Array:

• On—all PoGE ports are supplying nominal power to the Array. • Off—all connected PoGE ports are off. • Fault—if a problem is detected on a PoGE port, the type of

problem is indicated. • NA—no PoGE ports are associated with the Array (see page 16). • blank—Array model does not support PoGE.

2. Right-click the desired Array. Select PoGE Injector from the drop-down menu. The following options are displayed:

• Power On - turn on power and data transmission on the injector port(s), thus supplying power and data to the connected Array

port(s). If the injector port(s) are already on, transmission will not be affected.

• Power Off - turn off power and data transmission on the injector port(s). The connected Array port(s) will not be powered. If the injector port(s) are already off, they will not be affected.

• Power Cycle - turn all connected injector ports off and then on again. This reboots the Array.

3. Select one of the above operations. You will be asked to verify that you wish to proceed. The status of the operation will be displayed.

Managing the Injector Using SNMPManaged injector models may be controlled directly using SNMP. The MIB is available at support.xirrus.com.

These are some frequently used MIB OIDs:

port1Ctr: this read-write integer turns Port 1 on (1) or off (0).

Ports 2 to 8 (if present on the injector) are controlled with port2Ctr through port8Ctr.

port1Out: this read-only integer shows whether a load is connected to Port 1 (1) or not (0). Ports 2 to 8 (if present on the injector) are shown in port2Out through port8Out.

port1Status: this read-only integer shows the status of Port 1.

• on (0)• notConnected (1)• fault (2)• off (3)• na (63) (not applicable, port does not exist)Ports 2 to 8 (if present on the injector) are shown in port2Status through port8Status.

snmpTrapCommunity: the community string to use when sending SNMP traps. (Read-write string, maximum 32 characters)

username: this read-write string sets the user name for login. (5 to 30 characters)

password: this read-write string sets the password for login. (5 to 30 characters)

reboot: this write-only integer (0 to 255) reboots the injector, setting the poll time to wait for TFTP.

portStateSaved: this read-write integer shows whether there are unsaved changes to port1Ctr through port8Ctr—notSaved (0), saved (1). To send a command to save values, write a 1 to this OID.

The following OIDs may all be queried and changed via SNMP, however the changes require a reboot to take effect and to be reflected in SNMP GET results.

dhcpStatus: this read-write integer enables DHCP usage (1) or disables it (0).

ipAddr: this read-write IP address sets the IP address of the injector.

Troubleshooting the Injector/ LEDs

Load detection sequence after error detection

After the LEDs blink, the injector continues trying to detect a valid load. Thus the LEDs will continue to blink until the correct load is applied. If there is an open circuit connected to the output RJ45 port then the LEDs will not blink, but the unit will continue trying to detect a valid load.

If the Array does not power up:1. If the injector’s ON LED is off (XP1 only), check that its power cord

is plugged in and check the 100-240 VAC power source.

2. If the injector’s FAULT LED is on or blinking, this indicates an overload, or that the device at the other end of the OUT port is incompatible with the injector:

• Ensure that the data cable from the injector is plugged into the correct Array port, as described in Step 4. On 4 port Arrays, this is the Gigabit POE (or Gigabit1) port. On all other Arrays, this is the Data and Power IN port—not an Ethernet or Gigabit port, and Gig1 or Gig2 must be connected to the DATA OUT port.

• Ensure that the total of the length of all cables to an Array port is no more than 100m.

• Try a different Array, or try the Array with a shorter cable closer to the injector to verify whether the injector is good.

3. If no LEDs are lit on the front of the Array, the Array does not have power. Check that the injector’s ON LED is lit. If not, see Step 1 above. If the injector’s ON LED is lit, but CONNECT isn’t:

• Check the connection between the injector and the Array.• Ensure that the total of the length of all cables to the Array is no

more than 100m. • Try connecting the array directly to the injector using a short

segment of Ethernet cable.• Swap the Array with another unit, if possible.
