meeting will be of great benefit to all of our members

May 12, 2017 One of our members, Bev Centellas, has been looking at our library and search-

ing for new books that would be of interest to us. She hopes to peak your interest in reading

published stories of how other people have lived through the polio epidemics, learned to be

mobile again, and had families and careers. We can be so proud of the achievers that polio

has made of all of us. We may have a few different snacks as we say good bye for the summer

and look forward to seeing each other in the fall. Take a book home for a summer read.

Please pay special attention to Page 16 of this newsletter. It outlines changes that

have been made and volunteers needed to keep our support group viable.

Cliff and Diana Kennedy were a strong presence in the group and we will miss them.

They maintained several items that must now be distributed to others.

We must come together in order to continue providing a place for postpolio people to

join for support and social.

Your help is needed so we can keep having our monthly meetings in future years.

NEED YOUR STORY

At the request of several members of the group we are asking for vol-

unteers to prepare their polio/post-polio stories and present them at

meetings. Presentations may be 5-10 minutes long. We could do 1 or

2 at each meeting if we have enough volunteers. Could be, if the sto-

ries were on paper or better yet in the computer, we can make a book

of our stories or add them to the newsletter or web site. Please con-

tact Barbara Meyers to volunteer. Use phone 352-753-2263 or email

[email protected] to reach me.

We all love to hear the stories of how each person made it through

each stage of the disease; struck with polio, lived a full life, dealing

with post-polio.

Why Listerine? You may only use Listerine as a mouthwash, but its inventors had so much more in mind.

The Krazy Coupon Lady writes: “Did you know Listerine, which was formulated in 1879, was originally developed as a surgical antiseptic and, historically, has been used for all sorts of things? It actually wasn’t marketed for bad breath until the 1970s!” And with so many helpful ingredients in Listerine — such as thyme, eucalyptus, and alcohol — it’s no wonder this product is being used in so many creative ways. Keep scrolling to see just how many surprising ways there are for you to use Listerine in your life!

Surprising Use #1: Rub It Under Your Arms Have you ever found yourself without deodor-ant at a very inopportune moment? Well, Lis-terine is great for fighting underarm odors

whenever you are in a pinch! Simply pour some Listerine onto a cotton ball and gently dab it under your arms.

Surprising Use #2: Soak Your Feet In It According to Top 10 Home Remedies, Listerine can be great for getting rid of toenail fun-gus. Simply make yourself a Listerine foot bath and allow your toes to soak for half an hour. Some even recommend mixing in a little bit of white vinegar for particularly bad cases.

Surprising Use #3: Pour It Down The Toilet It might seem like you are throwing money down the toilet, but Listerine can actually clean and deodorize your bowl. All you have to do is pour a little in and use your toilet brush to give things a light scrub. The Examiner writes, “Not only will it clean your toilet, but it will also give it a great shine and a good smell.”

Surprising Use #4: Dab It On Your Itches As weird as it sounds, dabbing Listerine on your itchy bug bites can give you some much-needed relief. Dental hygienist Carrie Ibbetson writes, “Listerine is my go-to source for stopping bug bites from itching like crazy.” She also recommends using it for itchy reactions to poison ivy or poison oak!

Page 7: POWER OVER POLIO NEWS - WordPress.com · According to Top 10 Home Remedies, Listerine can be great for getting rid of toenail fun-gus. Simply make yourself a Listerine foot bath and

7

Surprising Use #5: Wet Your Hair with It Surprisingly, Listerine was once marketed as a way to get rid of dandruff! Though it never be-came quite popular enough for this use, many (such as Mommysavers.com) suggest giving it a try. Simply massage some Listerine onto the scalp, wrap your hair in a towel, and wash it out after you’ve allowed it to do its work!

Surprising Use #6: Rub It On Your Dog Many pet owners skip expensive flea sprays and products, instead opting for a little bit of Lis-terine. This flea-fighting method is a surprising alternative to sometimes harsh chemi-cals. According to the Krazy Coupon Lady, try “mixing it with shampoo in a bath or diluting it with water and using it as a spray.”

Surprising Use #7: Put It On Your Face Many will use this mouthwash as a way to battle acne! One happy Listerine user writes in the Seattle Times: “I have tried all types of antibiotics and topical prescriptions on the mar-ket. Nothing has worked as well as applying Listerine morning and night.”

Surprising Use #8: Stick Your Toothbrush In It Just as Listerine is able to battle germs in your mouth, it can take care of the yucky germs on your toothbrush as well. Fill your nightstand glass with a little bit of the mouthwash and let your toothbrush soak. A couple of hours should be more than enough to do the trick!

Surprising Use #9: Spray It On Your Screen People might think you are crazy to spray Listerine onto your computer or television screen, but it is a great way to clean things off. Spray some on and use a soft cloth to wipe away fin-gerprints and unwanted gunk. An added bonus will be the minty smell, as opposed to the “chemical smell” often accompanying normal cleaning products.

Surprising Use #10: Toss It In The Trash Powerful garbage can odors can make your kitchen smell absolutely terrible. But before you throw any garbage in the bag, put a Listerine-soaked paper towel in the very bottom. This will keep things smelling fresh and minty!

These unexpected uses of Listerine may seem strange, but if they can make your life better or easier, why not give them a try? From: Marion Schoeller

From taking her stand as a six-year-old poster child for polio, to pub-lishing a national magazine devoted to disability issues, Cyndi Jones, Revelle ’74, has spent her life fighting for the rights of people with disabilities. Many who devote their lives to social justice can point to a definitive moment when the need to stand up to inequality became saliently apparent. Not so many can say they experienced such a moment at the age of six, but for Cyndi Jones, Revelle ’74, a first-grade classroom would prove to be her first touch with the harsh reality of discrimination.

Jones contracted infantile paralysis, or polio, at the age of two. As a young girl in St. Louis, Mo., she was selected to be the March of Dimes poster child in the re-gion. Jones remembers the excitement of being the young girl on crutches wav

ing from parade floats and fea-tured on local billboards. Throughout the 1950s, hers was the smiling face meant to open people’s eyes to polio. Yet when the organization’s mission moved from polio fundraising to vaccination, just the reverse occurred—Jones’ eyes were opened to the pre-vailing attitudes that she and other people with disabilities faced.

11

An insensitive tear-off vaccination voucher featuring six-year-old Jones set her on a course of lifelong disability rights advocacy. “I was in class and a new poster was being distributed,” Jones says. “They used a photo of a couple of kids running through a field, then a photo of me in a party dress. Over their picture it said ‘THIS,’ and over my picture it said ‘NOT THIS.’ I wanted to crawl under my desk.” Jones went home that day with an acute sense of being wronged, and more importantly, the resolve to do something about it. “I told my mom that the March of Dimes cannot use my photos anymore,” she recalls. “That’s when I realized how society viewed disability. That’s when I be-came an advocate.”

What reads like a tragic instance in the life of a young girl would only be Jones’ first brush with the social injustices she would spend her life fighting against. Upon moving to San Diego, Jones was not admitted into her neighborhood school, but was bussed across the county to a school for children with disabili-ties. This was before legislation such as PL 94-142 and Section 504 prohibited discrimination, and Jones acknowledges the opportunities afforded to her even before Section 504 passed in 1973. “UCSD didn’t have to accept me, either,” Jones says. “I’m lucky that I was already enrolled in college even before I had the right to attend.”

Even though she was admitted to UC San Diego, a lack of accessibility and ac-commodation at the time ultimately took a substantial toll on her education. Us-ing crutches to navigate a growing campus in the 1960s was not easy. “I always had to choose my classes based on where they were located, not who was teaching them,” Jones says. The distance from her dorm to educational facilities proved to be a major obstacle; her inability to travel to Geisel Library—then known as the “not-so” Central Library—impacted the quality of her classwork. “It was exhausting trying to make it to classes. I was always late, and I was tired by the time I got there. But back then, the sentiment was ‘If you can’t do it, you can’t do it.’” Finally, during her senior year, she faced a nearly impossible circuit in order to take courses required to complete her degree in biology.

Page 12: POWER OVER POLIO NEWS - WordPress.com · According to Top 10 Home Remedies, Listerine can be great for getting rid of toenail fun-gus. Simply make yourself a Listerine foot bath and

12

“I had to take three core classes that were back-to-back. The first was in Revelle 2722, the second over in Muir, and then back to 2722. I really couldn’t do it on crutches, so I asked the dean if she could hold all three classes in Revelle. She said, ‘Well, that would involve moving 500 students,’ and I replied, ‘Yes, and they would probably love you for it!’” Her request ultimately denied, Jones had no other option but to put her studies on hold. She left the university that quar-ter, six courses shy of graduating.

“Not having my accommodations met was just a fact of life in those days,” Jones says. “And it hardened me in understanding that you have to fight for what you want.” After a stint teaching public school in the Watts area of Los Angeles, Jones eventually would return to finish her coursework and earn her degree in biology with a minor in religious studies in 1974. But the understanding she de-veloped, along with the will to fight, would soon prove to have as much rele-vance in her professional life as a formal education.

13

As publisher of the disability-focused Mainstream Magazine, Jones was invited to the White House (above) just prior to the signing of the Americans with Disa-bilities Act in 1990. Soon after graduation, Jones was faced with a unique opportunity incidentally afforded to her by the very discrimination she faced in her elementary school days. “When they sent us all to a special school, they didn’t realize they were giving us the opportunity to organize and later create change,” she jokes, refer-ring to the old friends who contacted her to help launch Mainstream Magazine, a California-based publication devoted to disability issues. Jones joined the mag-azine’s staff and started out doing anything the magazine required, from fund-raising to design and editorial work, all in an era before computers changed eve-rything.

“It was all on carbon-based type,” she remembers. “If you touched it the words would smear, so we had to use hairspray to stabilize it. So much of the process was manual; publishing was truly hands-on in those days.”

But Mainstream was far more than words on paper. In the days before email, the magazine was an important means of organizing and informing the public when the fight for disability rights was at a fever pitch from the ’70s through the ’90s. “Our magazine was a connection for people to be aware and get involved,” says Jones. “We created some of the change and we kept the movement mov-ing.” Jones admits there was a blurry line in being a disability rights journalist and disability rights activist; during a time when legislation was being passed yet there was little enforcement to see it through, covering the many sit-ins, marches and protests eventually meant participating in them as well.

Jones would eventually become publisher of Mainstream, and she freely high-lights the role her education played in running every aspect of the publication. “Revelle teaches you to be a renaissance scholar,” Jones says. “When you’re a small publisher within a staff of only five, you have to be able to edit, hire and fire, do the books, understand advertising and sales and think of stories people would be interested in reading about. I needed the skills to keep all those balls in the air, and the Revelle renaissance philosophy was important in prepping me to do that.”

14

Allowed just one question for President George W. Bush during a private meeting with media, Jones went off-script with the op-portunity. As Mainstream’s publisher, Jones was a key influencer of not only public opinion, but public policy. Leading up to the signing of the Ameri-cans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Jones and other disa-bility journalists were invit-

ed to interview then President George H.W. Bush. With each reporter allowed just one question, Jones went off-script from a prepared question to instead ask about improving collaboration between government agencies with regards to disability issues. Hers was one of the only questions to get a significant response from the president, and the result four years later was a book-length report ti-tled Enabling America. “They had gone through all the committee work, all the research, and had come out with the book. That was the answer to my ques-tion.”

Jones was then invited back to the White House signing ceremony for the Amer-icans with Disabilities Act on July 26, 1990. With last year marking the ADA’s 25th anniversary, Jones and three other individuals were featured in a com-memorative exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution highlighting leaders of the disability community and honoring the collective effort to ensure equal oppor-tunity and prohibit disability discrimination.

15

Along with a career pushing for broad change in na-tional policy, Jones also strove to help others on a much more personal level, one that would bring her back to UC San Diego more than 30 years after she had to halt her studies. In 2004, Jones developed What’s Next?, a mentoring program that brought to-gether young people with physical disabilities and paired them with adult mentors with similar limita-tions. “We wanted these kids to see how someone facing their particular challenges could succeed,” Jones says. A summer residential component of the program brought mentors and mentees to the UC San

Diego campus for a week, where hands-on tips were shared for strategically nav-igating the 1,200 acre university. Jones attended UC San Diego well before the ADA legislated disability accommo-dations. Today UC San Diego continuously works toward better accessibility, with projects like the new path on Peterson Hill. | Photo Credit: Brennan Romer-il, Marshall ’11 Jones views this sort of personal outreach as integral to perpetuate what she’s spent her life fighting for. “The activist work lays the foundation for the personal work,” she says. “Unless people utilize the access, it disappears. If we don’t get jobs, if we don’t go to college, it will go away.” Be it through impact in the political arena or a personal touch to find the strength within, Jones believes that success for people with disabilities is suc-

cess for people in general. The fight is never over, and according to Jones, it’s a fight that all should take part in. “Everyone will be disabled if you live long enough,” says Jones. “When you do something for disability rights, you’re really doing something for yourself.”

NEW STRUCTURE OF POPS

With the loss of the Kennedy’s we have had to look at the structure of the support group.

We would welcome any member who would come forth and take the position of ‘Leader’.

In order to unburden the position of “Leader” for the last 2 years 5 members volunteered

to find programs for each meeting and be the leader for the meeting they arranged. A

couple of new positions were added to enhance the group Keep In Touch Don Suttle uses

the phone to keep in touch with our members and Care and Concern Susan Keeaton

sends cards to our members when appropriate.

With those folks in place the job of leader became one of making sure all the ends are tied

up for each meeting. However Diane and Cliff still held on to a few record keeping items:

Name tags/ bring to meeting and make new as required, need a volunteer for this duty.

The list now exists in a computer file with directions on how to make new tags.

New member folders/ prepare folders with PPS information enclosed ,for first time

attendees (Don and Jo An Suttle have asked to have this responsibility)

Lists of members/ addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses. All kept on spread

sheets in the computer we will call this position Secretary. We are looking for someone to

take this position. This person would need some computer knowledge of spreadsheets.

Kay Mosure has accepted the position of Publicity Chairperson

Please look into your hearts and see how you can help keep the group alive and well. Any

small task that you can do will help everyone. Barbara

It takes dedication to keep the POPs group together, provide infor-mation along with interesting meetings. Our goal is to maintain a friendly welcoming atmosphere for all polio survivors and their caregivers, family And friends.
