3M Fit TestingThe 3M fit testing service is provided by Fit2Fit accredited personnel on the employers'
site at a day and time suitable to the employer. The scheme is a BSIF initiative
supported by the HSE which ensures fit testers can conduct a fit test to a level of
competence required in the HSE guidance note 282/28. The staff will fit test
employees on the respirator that has been issued, but also carries sufficient samples.
Safety Services
3M™ Ear Plug Fit Validation System and Loan SchemeThe 3M™ E-A-RFit™ Validation System measures the level of employee hearing
protection in just 8 seconds. Workers receive their own personal attenuation rating
(PAR) and learn how correctly inserting the right earplug increases their level of
protection.
3M is proud to offer a broad range of support and services to ensure you and your workforce are happy and confident in your choice of PPE and its usage. From downloadable posters, toolbox talks and care & maintenance guides to bookable Face Fit Testing, train-the-trainer workshops and free webinars, 3M are on hand, allowing you to focus on the most important thing, keeping your people safe.
If you are interested in receiving a quote or to simply find out more about the services on offer, please use one of the following:

Monitor Badges and Analysis ServiceOur NEW Organic Vapour Analysis Service is a simple and efficient means of
monitoring the personal exposure levels of your employees to gases and vapours.
It’s an essential first step towards achieving legislative compliance, and to choosing
the right Respiratory Protective Equipment. Visit 3M.co.uk/ExposureDetection for
more information.
3M Air Quality TestingIf you use compressed air fed respirators your air supply needs to be of
breathable quality and sufficient flow and pressure to provide
adequate protection. We can test both air quality and flow to give you
complete peace of mind.

Fit testingUsers of respirators with a tight fitting facepiece should be fit tested as required by
the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH). Respirators
with tight fitting facepieces include disposable respirators, half masks and full face
masks, including those that form part of a powered or airfed respirator.
For further information on fit testing options and support please call the 3M Helpline

3M offers a broad range of Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) for protection against gases, vapours and particulates.
Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) must be both adequate and suitable for the
work to be undertaken. Different types of RPE offer different levels of protection. To
be classed as adequate the level of protection selected must be capable of reducing
exposure to hazardous substances to an acceptable level. The RPE must also be
suitable for both the wearer and the situation, e.g. it must fit the wearer, be
comfortable to wear, be robust enough for the environment in which it will be used
and be compatible with other PPE.
There are disposable and reusable types of RPE. Consideration must be given to the
storage and maintenance of reusable types to ensure both workers and the
investment in PPE are protected. Maintenance of RPE will involve ensuring that
trained personnel are available to conduct the work, spare parts are provided and an
administration system exists to keep records.
The broad range of RPE available from 3M offers you the chance to choose the level
of protection, comfort, style and maintenance options you need to work effectively
and safely.

Selecting and specifying the appropriate respiratory protective equipment can seem daunting with so many factors to consider. With our simple three-step selection system however, it’s easy to make sure the disposable respirator you choose is offering the correct levels of protection and comfort required by your employees.
STEP ONE Which protection factor suits your needs?
FFP1 Respirators FFP2 Respirators FFP3 Respirators Speciality Respirators
Protection factor APF 4 APF 10 APF 20 APF 4 or 10
Typical applications Low level fine dust/oil or water based mists (hand sanding, drilling and cutting)
Moderate level fine dust/oil or water based mists (plastering, cement, sanding and wood dust)
Higher level fine dust/oil or water based mists (hazardous pharmaceutical powders, biological agents and fibres)
Fine dust/oil or water based mists. Options for metal fume, ozone and nuisance levels of certain gases and vapours dependent on model
Easy identification Identified by YELLOW straps Identified by BLUE straps or valve lettering
Identified by RED straps or valve lettering
Protection level can be identified by the strap colour or valve lettering
Classification explainedWhen used correctly by a wearer who has passed a face fit test, an FFP1 respirator should reduce exposure
to airborne particles by a factor of 4, an FFP2 by a factor of 10 and an FFP3 by a factor of 20.
Disposable respirators are additionally classified as R reusable, or non-reusable. R products may be cleaned,
stored and reused provided they are in good condition. Non-reusable products are intended for single shift use only.
Look for the R marking in the following pages, otherwise all 3M disposable respiratory products are non-reusable.
STEP TWO Choose a valved or unvalved respirator?
Benefits of the 3M™ Cool Flow™ Valve• Reduces exhalation effort
• Cooler to wear
• Stays comfortable for longer
• Less likely to mist up eyewear
Benefits of a non-valved respirator• Lower unit cost
• Prevents the wearer from contaminating their environment
STEP THREE What style?Choose from our Premium, Comfort or Classic ranges or a Welding or Speciality respirator for specific applications. Some of our ranges offer a cup-shaped and flat-fold respirator for your preference.
Flat-Fold

Gas & Vapour Protection explainedEN14387, the European standard for gas filters, classifies gases and vapours into the following groups, each of which are designated a standard colour coding. There are coloured bands on 3M 6000 Series filters using this coding to denote the nature of the protection that each product provides.
A - Organic Vapours (boiling point >65°C). Examples of these include xylene and toluene.
B - Inorganic Vapours. Examples of these include chlorine and bromine.
E - Acid gases. Examples of these include sulphuric acid.
K - Ammonia and its derivatives.
AX - Organic Vapours (boiling point <65°C). Examples of these include acetone and bromoethane.

3M Respiratory Protection
Complete Versatility The 3M™ Versaflo™ Respiratory Protective Systems are designed as modular systems where parts can be mixed and matched as needs and preferences change. For example, if a user of a 3M™ Versaflo™ TR-300 Turbo and 3M™ Versaflo™ S-533 Hood now requires impact protection for their head they can simply replace the hood with a helmet. If a process changes introducing a hazard that cannot be filtered the system may be converted from powered air to supplied air by replacing the turbo unit with a 3M™ Versaflo™ V-500 Regulator. This versatility allows users to adapt to changes in hazards, work practices and their personal preference.

Most 3M™ Scotchlite™ Reflective Materials intended for occupational garments conform to EN471 Level 2. In addition, they boast a range of features and benefits that meet various different requirements, depending on your work environment. In situations exposing your workforce to all manner of hazardous, unpleasant and dirty materials, you may require your reflective clothing to be thermally decontaminated or to withstand a wide range of temperatures, chemicals, smoke damage, oil or grime. 3M can help you find a 3M Scotchlite Reflective Material that entirely suits your needs. What additional requirements do you have?
3M manufactures a wide range of retro reflective materials that incorporate both glass bead and micro prismatic technologies. Whatever your requirements - we’ll be able to help.
EN471: A1: 2007 The European Standard for High Visibility WorkwearWith safety its primary objective, EN471 sets out exacting specifications for the performance of high visibility garments. The performance of the conspicuous materials to be used in “high visibility clothing” is specified together with minimum areas and placement of the materials.
Two levels of retro reflective materials are tabled within the standard with Level 2 providing the highest level of brightness. Most Scotchlite reflective materials for high visibility workwear meet and exceed the highest brightness category of EN471.
3M Reflective Materials
