UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Q UALIFIERS

LINCOLN GO ONE

BETTERL

incoln Red Imps Football Club made Gibraltar football history when they qualified once again for the UEFAChampions League qualifiers on consecutive seasons, not only did they qualify but they went one betterthan last year and managed to get past the 1st round.

First round rivals were the Andorran champions Santa Colomawhich came to Gibraltar for the first leg encounter, a very dullmatch with not many chances created by both teams endingin a 0-0 result which was not a bad result for Lincoln consider-ing they had not conceded an away goal.A week later Lincoln travelled to the Estadio Comunal DAn-dorra La Vella in high spirits to upset the Andorrans and sothey did. Santa Coloma took the lead midway in the 1st half throughIldefons Lima and took that lead to the interval. Lincoln came out in the second half in search of that away goal

which would turn the tie in their favour, and the goal camequicker than expected courtesy of Anthony Bardon and 15 min-utes later Gibs and Lincolns local hero Lee Casciaro made it1-2 and game over for Santa Coloma, and off to Denmark toplay FC Midtylland in the 2nd round.Lincoln went out looking for a good result to take home in the2nd leg and were holding well at the back with Juanse, Liamand Lee trying to get that away goal. Unfortunately the Danesmanaged to get on the score sheet with 15 minutes to go ofthe 1st half through Morten Rasmussen. Lincoln managed to

Page 17: Powerade ION4 is a registered trademark - Gibsport.gi · which came to Gibraltar for the first leg encounter, a very dull match with not many chances created by both teams ending

17

create some very good scoring opportunities but they were un-able to materialise them and at the end of the 90mins it fin-ished 1-0.So to the 2nd leg and all to play for as a goal for Lincoln wouldget them back in the tie. Lincoln came out strong and wereapplying some pressure and creating some chances whichwere very ably intercepted by the Danish defence and keeper. As the match went on the Danes began to pick up the pace ofthe game and were mounting their chances which were verywell parried by keeper Navas. But enough was enough and onthe final minute of the first half a cross was headed in by Mar-

tin Pusic for the Danes 1st goal and a 2-0 aggregate score intheir favour. The second half started with Lincoln knowing that they had analmost impossible feat of scoring 3 goals, but none the lessthey battled till the end giving the packed stadium a great foot-ball match to watch.Once again in the last minute of the game the Danes managedyet another goal through Stein Poulsen for the final 2-0 score.May I say Lincoln bow out of the competition but not withouta fight.

‘UNIQUE’SPORTSSPORTS

DAYDAY

St Annes Sports Day can certainly be called a unique Team Sports Day. Pupils are grouped according to

their ability and form teams which will only compete against others of the same level.

ST ANNE S SPORTS D AYS 2015

Page 25: Powerade ION4 is a registered trademark - Gibsport.gi · which came to Gibraltar for the first leg encounter, a very dull match with not many chances created by both teams ending

25

The school has four houses (Carmel, Fatima, Europa and Lour-

des and each year has four groups within each house. There-

fore there are 16 groups competing in each year. This

grouping encourages team work and whilst there is room for

outstanding performance, it is the team performance which is

encouraged.

At St Annes it is the underlying belief that when children en-

courage each other and work cooperatively alongside each

other, they have already triumphed. Within each group a

leader and coach has been nominated ant the children have

been taught to deliver corrective and positive feedback to their

peers.

Page 26: Powerade ION4 is a registered trademark - Gibsport.gi · which came to Gibraltar for the first leg encounter, a very dull match with not many chances created by both teams ending

26

The children were excited and cheered each other along.

There was healthy competition, and numerous records were

broken:

Adam Posso, Maraiah Davis, Arrianne Lima, Jake Ciruela, Sha-

nia Ballester, Renai Marcus, Kaylan Glynn, Yanira Pecino, Emma

Ramires, Leeroy Marquez, Destiny Butigieg, Shauna Martin,

Ayah Arrias, Dante Jimenez, Matthew Pilcher, Alexandra Igna-

cio, Liam Jessop, Kean Thorley and Jothan Sardena were all

record breakers on the day.

Team work was the key, with members motivating each other

and keeping the team spirit up. Rather than let their teams

down, there were instances of sheer perseverance and stam-

ina. At moments like these, the crown appreciated the efforts

made, urging and cheering on individual competitors. There

were some thrilling races which had the crowd on their feet!

The crowd was entertained by an energetic and colourful dis-

play of Hip Hop dancers. These young dancers had been prac-

tising their moves since January. They were amazing and the

choreography outstanding thanks to Ms Perez and Ms Az-

zopardi.

The gym display was precise and a marvel to watch. These

young gymnasts have been rehearsing since Decembers, and

have shown a lot of dedication and commitment. St Annes

are lucky to have five teachers helping to run both the tumbling

and gymnasts club: Mrs Pardo Gomez, Ms Azzopardi, Ms

Adamberry, Ms Balloqui, the main choreographer Ms Hook.

The dancers, as always elegant and perfectly synchronised,

danced to an environment song composed by Ms Guilliano the

Head of Music. The dance was fluid and beautifully inter-
