The required tapping drill size is shown on thefront of this pack.Note: Spark Plug insertsutilise a pilot nose tap which does not require pre-drilling.DRILL 1Use the specifiedtap to cut the holding threadinto the cleared hole.When tapping a hole, it isrecommended to use asuitable lubricant.Note: Wire Thread insertsrequire the use of STI taps which are slightly oversize to provide the correct hole diameter.Always check that the thread and pitch of the tap are the same as the bolt you wish to insert into the finished hole.TAP 2Loosen the grub screw and slidethe collar along theinsert tool shaft sothat the tang on the insertis positioned halfway up the inserttool slot.Use the install-ation tool to wind the insert into thethreaded holeusing light down-ward pressureuntil half a turn below the surface.INSERTNote: Do not work againstthe thread direction as the tang may break off.3Lift installation tool,rotate 90 and tap down sharply to break off wirethread insert tang. Usethe tang break off tool toperform this function where supplied.SNAPNote: For spark plug andlarge inserts use long nosepliers to remove the tang.4You have succesfullyrepaired your damagedthread. The new threadis normally strongerthan the original.DONE! 5XXNote: Do not position tangat the very top or bottomof the insert tool slot.DRILL 1Use the specified tapto cut the holding threadinto the cleared hole.When tapping a hole, it isrecommended to use asuitable lubricant.Note: Wire Thread insertsrequire the use of STI taps which are slightly oversize to provide the correct hole diameter.Always check that the thread and pitch of the tap are the same as the bolt you wish to insert into the finished hole.TAP 2INSERT 3SNAP 4You have succesfullyrepaired your damagedthread. The new threadis normally strongerthan the original.DONE! 5Use long nose pliers tobreak off and removethe tang from theinstalled insert.Wind the insert fullyon to the hex driveinstallation mandrel.Ensure that the inserttang is securely seated in the tang recess on the base of themandrel.Using a suitable powertool, wrench or ratchetwind the insert and mandrel into thethreaded hole until half a turn below thesurface. Unwind themandrel from theseated insert.Note: Do not work againstthe thread direction as the tang may break off.Drill to clear thedamaged thread with a standard twist drill.Chamfer the hole with a standard countersink(82 - 100)Note: Drill is oversize to accomodate external thread. Check technicalcharts for correct drill sizes.DRILLCreate new threadusing a standard tap.Check technicalcharts for correct tapsize.Note: Use of a suitable lubricant is essential during all tapping procedures.TAP1 2 INSERT 3Screw the insert intothe threaded holeuntil slightly below the surface of theparent material.DRIVE 4Select the correct sizeinstallation tool and placeover the insert. Drivelocking keys down using several hammer taps on end of installation tool.Drill to clear the damaged thread with a standard twist drill. The new threadis normally strongerthan the original.DONE! 5Insert a tang breakoff tool and tapdown sharply tobreak off wirethread insert tang.SNAPNote: For spark plug andlarge inserts use long nosepliers to remove the tang.4INSERT 3Note: Once insert is engagedin nozzle use no downwardpressure.Unwind mandrel and placeinsert into chamber with tang towards nozzle. Rotatethe pre-winder handleclockwise to wind themandrel into the insert until end of mandrel engages with tang. Use gentledownward pressure until insert engages in threaded nozzle. Continue winding until insert reaches end ofnozzle. Place tool squarelyover tapped hole and continue winding until insertis transferred from tool toworkpiece. Rotate handlecounterclockwise to wind mandrel out of the installed insert. Free RunningProduced from precision profiled austenitic stainless steel wire wound into a helicalspiral, PowerCoil free running inserts have a spring like appearance. When installed,using any one of a variety of manual or automatic tools, they provide strong permanentinternal threads which resist heat and corrosion. Once fitted, their position is maintainedby the action of radial pressure between their coils and the flanks of the tapped hole.This pressure exists because their free diameter is larger by a calculated amount, thantheir installed diameter.Screw LockingScrew locking (or prevailing torque) inserts are of particular value in applications subjectto the effects of cyclic vibration or impact. In addition to the benefits afforded by freerunning inserts, PowerCoil screw locking inserts offer the additional security of prevailinglocking torque. This is achieved by the action of one or more polygonal grip coilspositioned within the insert s l ength, which exert radial pressure on the male thread.Each grip coil consists of a number of tangential locking chords which protrude insidethe minor diameter of the normal free running coils. As the male thread passes throughthese grip coils, the locking flats are displaced thus exerting radial pressure orprevailing torque on the male thread. The flexibility of wire thread inserts helps to compensatefor pitch and flank angle errors, inherent in normal tapped holes, and significantlyenhances the load bearing capacity by deflecting the residual forces into a helicalhoop stress which is dispersed into the wall of the tapped hole. This enables thedesign to be confidently based on the bolt strength utilising smaller and shorterthreads even when used in low strength materials.The high tensile coils of a wire thread insert undergo a diameter reduction duringinstallation. The outward spring-like force of the coils locks the insert into place.Each coil can flex independently to contact the greatest amount of parent materialthread surface. The outward spring action of the insert holds itin place.Wear ResistanceThe combination of material hardness and the brilliant surface finish of wire threadinserts creates internal threads in which wear due to thread friction is virtuallyeliminated. Galvanic action within the thread assembly isreduced, increasing the life of the fastening assembly.Galvanic corrosion is most significant form of corrosion affecting inserts and fasteners.Galvanic corrosion occurs when dissimilar metals are in contact in the presence of anelectrolytic solution. All metals exhibit different degrees of activity or nobility and canbe arranged in a galvanic series of increasing activity. Gold and platinum are most noblewhile zinc and magnesium are most active. The most common electrolytic solutionencountered is ordinary water. Seawater or salt spray is more damaging because of highconcentrations of dissolved salts.The best way to preclude galvanic corrosion is to use similar potential metals andeliminate the electrolyte conductor. The active stainless steel of PowerCoil wire threadinserts are not passivated. This minimizes the possibility of galvanic corrosionoccurring when they are installed in aluminum or magnesium parent materials.Some additional precautions for reducing galvanic corrosion are:1. Su utilizacin es efectiva al utilizar materiales ms delgados o msligeros sin sacrificar la dureza de la rosca.Los insertos protegen las roscas originales contra posibles fallos de perdida de hilos,perdida de medida, corrosin o desgaste. La corrosin galvnica aparece cuando metales distintos estn en contacto enla presencia de una solucin electroltica. Todos los metales tienen grados diferentes deactividad o nobleza y pueden arreglarse en series galvnicas de actividad incrementada.El oro y el platino son los ms nobles, mientras el zinc y el magnesio son los ms activos.La solucin electroltica ms comn encontrada es agua ordinaria. El agua de mar o spraysalado es ms daina por la alta concentracin de sales disueltas.La mejor manera de prevenir la corrosin galvnica es usar metales potencialmentesimilares y eliminar el conductor electroltico. El activo del acero inoxidable usado en lasroscas de los insertos Power Coil no est pasivizado. Esto minimiza la posibilidad de queocurra corrosin galvnica cuando se instalan en aluminio y magnesio o materialessimilares. Algunas precauciones adicionales que deben tomarse en cuenta para prevenir lacorrosin galvnica son:1. Aislar los tornillos de los electrolitos. Esto puede hacerse a travs de encapsulado o sellado.2. Especficamente usar insertos recubiertos de cadmio. El acabado en cadmioproporciona una barrera contra la corrosin. Adicionalmente, el acabado en cadmiotiene propiedades lubricantes que minimizan el roce cuando se usan tornillos de aceroinoxidable.3. Aplicar pastas o compuestos inhibidores de corrosin al tornillo. Esto incluye alsellador zinc cromado (MIL-P-8585) y el sellador estroncio cromado (MIL-P-23377).Nota: Las pastas aplicadas al inserto helicoidal entre las roscas y el agujero puedencausar perdida de la tolerancia propia. Por lo tanto se recomienda aplicar la pastasolamente al tornillo y no al inserto. Si el sellador cromo zinc es aplicado al agujeroroscado debe rebajarse y aplicarse escasamente. El inserto debe instalarse mientras elsellador esta aun hmedo.4. Dar una pelcula de lubricante seco como el disulfato de molibdeno en los insertos,proporciona una barrera secundaria contra la corrosin.5.
