Refrigeration units work as a seriesof cycles. This automated activitymaintains the required storage temperature with alternatingstarts and stops. On/off air cycles typically run for aminimum of 12 cycles per hour and, in some open displaycases, up to 20 cycles per hour.
Today’s refrigeration units monitor circulating airtemperature in order to decide when to switch on and off.However, because air temperature naturally warms far morequickly than food temperature, these systems work harderthan necessary to maintain stored products at the righttemperature. This, in turn, leads to excessive electricityconsumption and undue wear and tear on your equipment.

Here’s an analogy to the comparison of a “before”and “after” retrofit: Drive a car in the city for an hour,then drive the car on the interstate highway for an hour.
Either way, the driving timeis the same. The cityversion is filled with lots ofstop and go driving, a hotterengine, and low gas mileage
for a shorter distance. The interstate highway scenarioenables the car to run cooler and farther with fewerinterruptions and better gas mileage. The same holds truewhen using POWERCUBE. The compressor runs coolerwhile consuming fewer kilowatt-hours (kWh) ofelectricity by having fewer starts and stops. Most
compressors have a 4-to-1 ratio,meaning they draw four times
as much electricity instarting up in comparisonto continually running.Because start-ups use fourtimes more power (i.e.start-up usage of 16 amps,versus run usage of 4amps), considerable energysavings can be achieved.In addition, the moreefficient refrigeration cycle
leads to a more efficient unit,which then leads to a colder storage area. Consequently,the thermostat can be adjusted to a slightly higher set-pointtemperature for further substantial energy savings, withoutcompromising food safety, shelf-life, and quality.
Although the POWERCUBE cycles last longer, theirfrequency can be reduced by as much as 80%. Forexample, a Dairy Case air cycles 3 minutes on, 2 minutesoff, which equals 12 cycles per hour. With thePOWERCUBE fitted, the cycles change to 8 minutes on,7 minutes off, which equals just 4 cycles per hour. Thisequates to a 66.7% reduction in starts and an 11.1%reduction in total run time.

The Value of Longer On-CyclesConventionally, thermostats start and stop compressors as temperature of air
changes between set-points. Since air temperature varies quickly, this generatesnumerous on/off cycles (typically 3-minute cycles), each individually without
having very much net cooling effect on the foodtemperature. However, with POWERCUBE fitted,
on-cycles typically run for 8 to 10 minutes,resulting in a positive food temperaturereduction, since the food is cooled moreeffectively. Longer cycles take advantageof the food’s thermal inertia. This leads tomore efficient use of the refrigerator

The Value of Longer Off-CyclesWith POWERCUBE installed, longer off-cycles allow pressure equalization
between the high and low pressure parts of the refrigerant system. This results ina “softer” start from an overall cooler system, which keeps the compressor frombeing unnecessarily tripped by an unbalanced or high pressure status. In otherwords, low amperage clean starts obtain maximum efficiency more quickly, whichprovides more energy savings.
