GAME RECAPUNION AT DC 4-0

WINMAY 13

Philadelphia Union earned a 4-0 shutout victory over Eastern Conference rival D.C. United Saturday night in front of a crowd of 14,576 at RFK Stadium in the District of Columbia. With the victory, the Union are now unbeaten in their last four contests owning a record of 2-0-2, while outscoring their opponents 10-3 during this stretch.

The Union showed a physical presence in the first half against D.C. United. Philadelphia received two yellow cards within the first ten minutes of action. Fabinho was booked on a challenge in the fourth minute. Five minutes later Union Captain Alejandro Bedoya was also shown a yellow card.

The match remained scoreless until the 39th minute when Haris Medunjanin opened up his MLS account. After a classy build up in the D.C. United zone, the reigning MLS Player of the Week was able to find Chris Pontius, who then dropped off a pass for Medunjanin in the middle of the pitch. Medunjanin sent a rocket towards the net from outside the box that beat D.C. goalkeeper Bill Hamid to give Philadelphia the 1-0 lead after the first 45.

The complexion of the match changed drastically in the 55th minute, when D.C. United’s Luciano Acosta received a red card after a challenge on Philadelphia’s Ilsinho. Acosta was forced to leave the match, giving the Union a man advantage for the final 35 minutes.

Less than 10 minutes after the Acosta red card, the Union found the back of the net. Medunjanin added to his second assist of the night after his corner kick found the head of birthday boy Oguchi Onyewu. The 35 year old was able to beat Hamid and record his first MLS goal to give the Union a 2-0 advantage.

Philadelphia did not settle for a two goal advantage. Also opening up his MLS account was winger Fafa Picault. After Sapong won possession in the D.C. zone, it was Medunjanin who set up yet another goal. Picault received the pass and sent a shot from the 18 with his right foot and found the upper 90 to give Philadelphia the 3-0 lead. On the night, Medunjanin's two assists raised his team-leading total to five this season.

The Union found a way to add another to the scoreboard in the 88th minute to wrap up the match. Fabian Herbers sent a one-timer that snuck inside the post to secure the victory. The goal was set up by Union captain Alejandro Bedoya who sent Herbers a perfect pass. Herbers was able to one-time it and find the back of the net. The final whistle blew at RFK Stadium with the Union earning the 4-0 victory.

Philadelphia will be back in action twice this week when they return to Talen Energy Stadium. The Union will square off on Wednesday with top of the table contenders Houston Dynamo and wrap up the week by hosting Tim Howard and the Colorado Rapids.

GAME PREVIEWUNION vs DYNamoMAY 17

Philadelphia Union return to action this Wednesday when they host the Western Conference leader Houston Dynamo at Talen Energy Stadium. This will be the second of three matches in a span of seven days for Philadelphia. Kick-off for this match is set for 7:30 p.m. and will be televised on The Comcast Network with JP Dellacamera and Tommy Smyth on the call.

This will be the first and only match between these two clubs in 2017. The Union trail Houston in the all-time series owning a record of 4-6-4. Last season the Dynamo earned a dramatic stoppage time victory as Cristian Maidana scored on a free-kick in the 95th minute of the match to secure a 1-0 victory at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston. Prior to that match, Philadelphia had not lost to Houston since the 2014 campaign.

Philadelphia Union currently sits in 10th place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 2-4-4. The Union earned a 4-0 road victory last Saturday against rival D.C. United at RFK Stadium. Philadelphia received goals from Haris Medunjanin, Oguchi Onyewu, Fafa Picault and Fabian Herbers. Philadelphia is now unbeaten in their last four matches, out-scoring their opponents 10-3 in that stretch.

The key to the Union’s recent success starts with defense. Philadelphia has not allowed a goal in their last three matches. 2016 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Andre Blake registered his third straight clean sheet for Philadelphia, extending

his career-best shutout streak to 273 minutes. This is the second longest streak in MLS this season, only behind Luis Robles’ 295-minute effort for the New York Red Bulls (4/9/17 ’ 4/29/17). Blake has earned four shutouts this season and is just two shy of tying his career high set last season.

Wednesday will have MLS’ most prominent goal-scorers on display. The current Golden Boot leader Erick ’Cubo’ Torres has recorded eight goals for Houston this season in nine appearances. Philadelphia’s CJ Sapong enters Wednesday’s contest tied for third in MLS with seven goals, including a hat-trick on May 6 against New York Red Bulls.

Houston Dynamo enters Saturday’s contest with a record of 6-3-1 which is best in the Western Conference. The key to Houston’s success has been their overall dominance in Clutch City. The Dynamo own a 6-0-1 at home this season, but have struggled on the road owning a record of 0-3-0. Two of Houston’s three road losses this year have been against clubs on the east coast. The Dynamo have failed to score on the road against an Eastern Conference opponent this year. Houston is led by Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera who was previously the first head coach of the Rio Grande Valley FC Toros, the Dynamo's hybrid USL affiliate.

Kick-off for this match is set for 7:30 p.m and will be televised on The Comcast Network.
