As engines have become moreadvanced so have the tools that areneeded to support them.

In support of its products Perkinshas launched a powerful new toolcalled the Electronic DiagnosticDevice (EDD), which will help savetime and money for end users andthe distribution network. EDD cansupport all Perkins engines exceptthe 1300 and 4000 Series.

The tool, which has the ability toread and display both active andlogged diagnostic codes andunderstand raw engine data, willreduce the period it takes todiagnose possible faults and keepengine downtime to a minimum, enabling Perkins’ distributionnetwork to continue to provideleading product support.

The fact that end users can alsoeasily use the hand-held devicethemselves means that distributorscan cut the number of service visitsthey have to make, while ensuringthat they arrive on site armed withthe correct tools for the job.

EDD demonstrates the advancesin service support and thecapabilities of Perkins’ electronicengines. The tool has been

developed to make full use of thestandard messages broadcast by theengines. It can also view low levelnetwork information and statistics,a feature not often seen in such asmall device.

Among the device’s key featuresare:

• Large key pad that can beoperated by gloved hands

• A backlit LCD display for easyreading

• Five metre diagnostic cable• Robust casing which has been

tested from a height of onemetreThese features ensure EDD’s

easy use in the field for the userwho could be operating in darkconfined spaces or extremeconditions. The tool also comeswith a years warranty to providepiece of mind should theunexpected happen.

EDD has been extensively testedon Perkins’ full range of electroniccontrol management engines. Thistesting has allowed the menustructure to be refined to ensurethat any fault can be diagnosed inminutes without connecting to alaptop.

The tool can also supportEnglish, French, Italian, German andSpanish speaking territories.• For more information on EDD

It has just celebrated its 30th anniversarybut already national distributor Secodi is

looking to the future. Started by Jacques Fetis, Secodi

immediately became a Perkinsdistributor, and over the past 30 yearsthe relationship between the twocompanies has grown.

"The partnership between Secodiand Perkins is based on commitment

and technical skills," said Mr Fetis, who in the 1990s grew the French

based company from a single workshop inNantes, to a multi-site company, increasing its geographical coverage. In

recognition of this investment andcommitment to the business Secodi wasappointed as Perkins’ sole national distributorin 2003 – the first time such a title had beenawarded to a European distributor.

While enjoying the company’s anniversarycelebrations Mr Fetis admitted he was alreadylooking ahead to the next ten years.

Keen to grow the company, which boastsmore than 240 employees, further, Mr Fetissaid: "There is still much to do. Furtherconcentration is to be expected in thedistribution field.”Picture left: Jacques Fetis marks Secodi’s 30thanniversary.

It can be used to transport flightpassengers, aircraft spare parts, cargo and catering trolleys.

The SideCat Highlifter, poweredby Perkins, is able to accommodatethe demanding needs associated withthe aircraft ground handling industry.

The innovative Highlifter is used toload freight and passengers onto anaircraft as quickly and comfortably aspossible.

The Highlifter is currently beingused at Frankfurt airport, withEurope’s biggest continental hub usingthe new SideCat XL Passenger PRMmodel to ensure speedy boarding forpassengers with restricted mobility.

What makes the Highlifterdifferent from conventional vehiclesfor aircraft ground handling is itsbase; instead of a truck chassis, theSideCat uses a sideloader.

As well as providing stability forthe vehicle and an extremely smallturning arch, the use of a sideloadermeans the SideCat doesn’t needstabilizers for the lift operation. Thismeans the vehicle’s cabin can beraised or lowered even while theHighlifter is in motion.

The sideloader technology alsoallows for the cabin to be lowered toground level next to the chassis. In allthe models, the driver is liftedtogether with the cabin and enjoysfull view of the surroundings.

This innovation in aircraft groundhandling is also helping to save timeand money, as around ten minutescan be saved on each ground serviceprocedure.

Produced by the Austrian basedCATCON technologies, the SideCatHighlifter for aircraft uses Terra

sideloaders, equipped with Perkins’1104C-44T at 74.5 kW.

With lifting heights of more thaneight metres, the SideCat can servicea variety of aircraft and help withlogistical tasks.

The SideCat model is currentlybeing used by aircraft manufacturer

Airbus on the final assembly line forits A320, to lift component partsonto the mounting dock.

The new vehicle has proven to beparticularly effective with the newgiant of the sky, the A380. Beingside-mounted, the SideCat can reachthe height of over eight metres, and

also access the aircraft’s supply door, which is positioned over the wings, without using auxiliary aids.

Awarded the Berlin-BrandenburgInnovation Prize, the innovativeSideCat Highlifter is set to be afamiliar sight on airport aprons, among other applications.

Perkins is set to embrace Interim and Tier 4 Final legislativerequirements with the launch of a new range of cleaner, compact diesel engines. Power News previews the range.

The range will radically changePerkins’ product line-up, building onits strength and ability to tailorpower solutions for individualcustomer needs. Significantly thenew models will allow Perkins tooffer customers greater powerdensity and compactness to suittheir precise requirements, whatever the application.

The line-up will be spearheadedby the all-new 1200 Series, whichwill extend Perkins’ Interim Tier 4product offering up to 243 kW. Thefirst engines to be introduced in2010 will be a 7 litre offering, followed in 2011 by 6.6 litre and 4.4litre products.

“Building on our Voice of theCustomer approach for Tier 3, weare continuing to developcollaborative design programmeswith customers to make sure thisnew range provides the optimumengine solution to meet Interim andTier 4 Final requirements. Extensivetechnology expertise, collaborativedesign processes and systemintegration experience alongside anunequalled global product supportnetwork will give Perkins the powerto exceed customer expectations,”says Perkins president Hans Haefeli.

“As the industry takes a hugestep forward towards a ‘low or no’emissions era the enginemanufacturer must become thesolutions provider,” added Hans.“Reducing particulate matter (PM)by 90 per cent and oxides ofnitrogen (NOx) by up to 50 percent beyond current EPA Tier 3/EUIIIA standards is a challenge. Toachieve this, the most significantchanges will include the additionaluse of after treatment systems. It iswidely expected that these will be acombination of diesel oxidationcatalysts and diesel particulatefilters.”

Tier 4 will demand significant

changes to the architecture of theengine system and Perkins isworking to provide OEM’s with atailored emissions solution through acombination of technologies whichwill change depending on powerband.

“We already have some of themost compact engines on themarket in terms of installation space. We will be leveraging this heritageand expertise to ensure that at Tier4 we have created a compactproduct range that will deliverincreased power density, improvedflexibility, better fuel efficiency and, through our collaborative work,

offer our customers class leadingpackage installation solutions,”continued Hans.

Meeting Tier 4 needs does notstop at the tailpipe. “The regulationswill also extend into the field withrequirements such as in-field testingand on-board diagnostics.

“The more complex the productbecomes, the more important it isfor you to have a sophisticated andtechnically competent aftermarketsupport network, which is why atPerkins we continue to work withour dealers to develop the strongestaftermarket distributor network inthe world,” he concluded.

Efficient, reliable Perkins poweris a perfect choice for ASV’s first “goanywhere” tracked utility vehicle.

When ASV, Inc., of Grand Rapids,Minnesota, rolled out the ST-50, thelatest “go anywhere” utility vehicleusing their patented rubber trackundercarriage technology, there wasa Tier 3-compliant Perkins 404D-22diesel under the hood.

The new machine replaces theASV SC-50 as the company’s “idealmachine for home, on the jobsite, working your ranch, grooming trailsor anything else that needs to bedone”.

Like other Perkins-powered high-performance compact track loadersfrom ASV, the ST-50 uses a provenpatented technology that has beenthe company’s trademark for the last25 years. The ST-50’s uniqueundercarriage uses 24 rubber idlerwheels that spread the machine’sweight over the entire length andwidth of its tracks.

As a result, the machine’s 4,562lbs (2,069 kg) operating weight isdistributed down to only 2.38 lbs.per square inch (16.4 kPa) of groundpressure.

That is about half the groundpressure of a person on foot. Withsuch low ground pressure the ST-50

can work productively in soft or wetground conditions which areimpenetrable by conventionalwheeled utility vehicles.

The ST-50’s suspendedundercarriage gives it the tractionand the flotation to go just aboutanywhere, and with four torsionaxels suspending the undercarriage, the ride is exceptionally smooth for atracked machine. This makes the ST-50 an ideal machine for contractorsand companies that need to beproductive year round regardless ofweather and ground conditions.

ASV is the only manufacturer oftracked utility vehicles that offersthree different track options:• Standard 15-inch (381 mm) wide

general-purpose tracks withmoderate treads for optimumoperation in the widest range ofground conditions.

• Special smooth Turf Tracks withexceptionally low-impact on themost sensitive or fragile surfacesprimarily for landscape or golfcourse contractors.

• Extreme Terrain Tracks for use invery wet or snowy conditions, when extra traction is needed. This is a new 16.5-inch (419 mm)wide track that offers moreflotation than the standard track

and has extra-deep treads foradded traction over the worstground conditions. The Perkins 404C-22 powers a

hydraulic pump that supplies fluid tothe ST-50’s hydrostatic drive system. It is a normally aspirated diesel thatproduces 50 hp (37.3 kW) and 105ft-lb (143 Nm) of torque to give theST-50 a maximum speed of 11 mph(17.7 kph) and the ability to carry4,000 lb. (1,814 kg) on the cargobed and tow 5,000 lbs (2,268 kg).

The ST-50 differs from othertracked vehicles by using a steeringwheel rather than levers or ajoystick. It also has a unique QuickShift foot pedal to control forwardand reverse output of the two-speedhydrostatic drive. A certified Roll

Over Protection Structure (ROPS) isstandard, along with hydrauliccontrol for a dump box and/or snowblade.

Perkins industrial OEM accountmanager Sumhr Swopes said: “Witha vehicle designed to literally goanywhere, an efficient, reliable,easily-maintained engine is absolutelycritical. ASV chose the 404D-22based on the engine’s reputation andASV’s experience with Perkinsdiesels used in other products lines.

”The 404D-22 shares features likesingle side maintenance access andan extended, 500 hour maintenanceinterval with the other engines ASVuses,” she said. “It also meets EPATier 2 and European EC Stage II offhighway emissions standards.”

Focusing on thePerkins brandA series of interactiveconferences led by Perkins’product support team have beenheld in the Middle East.

Held at Kanoo UAE and KanooBahrain, the conferences wereattended by those who work withthe Perkins brand.

Throughout the event delegateswere given an overview of Perkinsand its strategy followed bypresentations and workshops onareas including organisationalstructure, technical queries, partsand engine orders. AlanBloodworth, business manager forthe Kanoo group said theconferences had been a success.

“We have already started to seeimprovements in the day to daybasic process enquiries. Feedbackfrom those attending has beenextremely positive and a majorstep towards consistent messagingand education across allpersonnel,” he stated.

Additional conferences will beheld in the Middle East next year.

Perkins plans forWuxi opening A year after plans to open a newfacility in Wuxi, China, tomanufacture the 400 Series enginewere announced, Perkins ispreparing to open the plant.

The facility in the Jiangsuprovince of China, will be officiallyopened on Thursday November27, to coincide with this year’sBauma China exhibition.

Perkins president Hans Haefeliand key members of the WuxiNational District will be there towitness the first 400 Series comeoff the line. The facility willproduce engines alongside Perkins’plants in Peterborough, Stafford,Curitiba and Griffin.

“This new facility will make the400 Series engines more readilyavailable for original equipmentmanufacturers with operations inChina and the Asia Pacific region,”said Mr Haefeli.

Perkins powers McCormick tractorsMcCormick has taken the opportunity tointroduce some performance-improving features toits popular ‘CX’ and ‘MC’ models while switchingover to engines that meet the latest ‘green’ exhaustemissions standards.

The mid-range tractors are popular withlivestock, mixed and arable farmers alike for theirstraight-forward specification, reliability andspacious driver accommodation.

The ‘CX’ range is progressively moving to enginesto Euro 3a / Tier 3 emissions standards, with twomodels available first - the CX90 T3 at 83hp, whichsucceeds the current CX85, and the CX110 T3 at101hp, which replaces the CX105. Perkins’ 1104D-44T engine is fitted to these models, with theCX110 having the addition of an inter-cooler to

further improve turbocharging efficiency.McCormick’s MC four cylinder model has also

be upgraded, with Perkins’ 1104D-44T engine usedagain. Tuned and equipped for the latest emissionsstandards: a cooling system to increase the densityof incoming air is now used for the turbochargingsystem on all three models, while the highest-powered version changes from standard to high-pressure common rail fuel injection.

The net result is that all three models have morepower – the MC105 T3, which replaces thecurrent MC95 is up 12 per cent at 101hp, while theMC115 T3, replacing the MC105, gets eight percent more power at 110hp. The new MC130 T3,replacing the current MC115, has 126hp; a sevenper cent increase on its predecessor.

Powerful mix: McCormick’s new rangeis powered by Perkins’ 1104D-44T engines.

The most typical way to grow anengine business is to get your engineinto a lot of different OEM machinesand follow up with extensiveaftermarket service and support.

But to further develop its enginebusiness in South America, Perkinshas taken that strategy and given it atwist. Five years after setting up itsown engine plant in Curitiba, Braziland two years following theestablishment of its new distributionnetwork, Perkins Motores do BrasilLtda. is looking to use wall-to-wallproduct support to ultimately driveincreasing engine sales.

“In the end, this business has gotto be about product support,” saidAntonio Costa, parts and distributionmanager for Perkins Motores doBrasil. “In the beginning when welooked at developing our dealernetwork, we focused on productsupport instead of engine sales. Youoften see it the other way around.

“But we went this way because ifyou have a strong base of productsupport, you are better able to havea structure for engines sales.”

Perkins engines have beenworking in South America fordecades, both through imports andthrough engines built by licensees, primarily MWM International. Thelicense agreement between Perkinsand MWM was ended in 2005, two

years after Perkins established itsown engine operations in

Curitiba. The 30,000m2Curitiba plantincorporates assembly, paint and test facilitiesfor the company’s1000 and 1100 seriesdiesel engines.

The followingspring, PerkinsMotores do Brasil

launched thebeginnings of its new

distribution network, again focusedon service and support. “The firstthing we did was reduce to onedistributor per country,” said Costa.“We used to have two, three orfour in some cases and werealized that the productsupport responsibility neededmore critical mass. Thedistributors need investmentsin training, tooling, partsinventory and they have tohave the business to be ableto make such investments.

“I’m not saying that ourproduct support wasn’t good whenit was a licensee responsibility,”Costa added. “In fact, our licenseesdid good work. Perkins has builtabout two million engines in thecountry and MWM has more than250 distributors in Brazil. When weterminated that license contract, wesaid now we’re going to take care ofeverything ourselves, but we knewthat was a big challenge.

“So we looked at the market, wedid surveys to understand thecustomer’s perceptions, buyingcriteria and all sorts of things beforewe put together our organization. Now after two years, we can see it’spaying off.”

In Brazil, the largest marketsegment in the region, the Perkinsnetwork is headed by masterdistributor MDPower, whichoversees a network of servicedealers and parts dealers.

“We had to put together anorganization that enabled goodproduct support for every engine, even the ones produced bylicensees,” said Alfredo Filho, servicemanager for MDPower. “It doesn’tmatter where the engines camefrom or how they came here, wehave got to be able to provide all ofthe support the customers need, wherever they are.”

The focus on product support iscrucial to customers such as TerexLatin America. Headquartered in thegreater Sao Paulo area, Terex LatinAmerica is responsible for sales andsupport of the company’s aerialwork platform (AWP), construction, crane, roadbuilding and miningequipment throughout the region.

The new Sao Paulo facility, opened in 2007, isspecifically focused on theAWP and cranebusinesses. AWPs are an

especially key segment asTerex accounts for roughly

70 per cent of the market inBrazil with its Genie machines.

Its dominance in that sector iseven more remarkable in thatTerex manufactures its machines in

the U.S. and imports them to Brazilfor distribution throughout theregion, mainly to rental companies.

“The problem in Brazil is if youdon’t have local manufacturing, it canbe very difficult to compete,” saidClaricio Silva, Terex product supportdirector of Latin America. “This goesback when the market was closedyears ago and people were resistantto buy imported products becausethey worried about whether youcould provide parts. Plus if youproduce in Brazil, there are financialadvantages provided by thegovernment – a good interest rate.

“Importation costs are reallycomplex in Latin America. If youbring things in from the U.S. toBrazil or Argentina, the customerwants to know, how do you supportit? Do you have the parts, are they inBrazil? If they’re in the U.S., howlong is it going to be to get themhere? And do you have peopletrained here to help me if I have aproblem?”

It is on the training side thatPerkins emphasis on service pays off

for Terex Latin America. “We offer alot of training to our customers inthe rental companies,” said Silva.“We have training one week amonth and as we have a goodrelationship with Perkins, what wedo is spend three days talking aboutthe Genie machine and then for twodays, people from Perkins comehere and talk about the engines. They teach our customers how tomaintain their machines and do smallrepairs.

“Our customers like it becausewith Perkins doing it, they know best.We like it because Perkins helps uswith that training and provides all ofthe materials we need.”

And Silva believes it also has animpact on sales of his machines.“The customer has a choice andbecause of what they’re doing here,90 per cent of the machines webring to Brazil have a Perkinsengine,” Silva said. “Every month Isend a report to Perkins with theserial number of the machine andwhere it is so they can be ready tohelp support that customer.”

Of course nearly all productsupport efforts are only as good asthe local service operations and herePerkins has gone to great care toalign itself with high qualitycompanies. A case in point isSorodiesel, a service dealer inSorocaba, Brazil.

Founded by Francisco Carnelos in1976, Sorodiesel is an authorizedservice and parts dealer for Perkins, among others. The companymaintains a staff of 70, many ofwhom are highly trained in enginediagnostics, repair andremanufacturing.

“Our strength is the catchphrasewe have on the wall,” said GilbertoTezoto, commercial director atSorodiesel. “It comes down to hardwork, quality and honesty. That is

the DNA of our company.“We have good machines, good

technicians, we use good technicalinformation and we use originalparts. So when we get a job, we cando a good job and take care of thecustomer.”

For example, when the companyembarks on an engine repair, eachengine immediately gets a Sorodiesel“identity” traceable through thecompany’s computerized workorder system as well as a plate thatis affixed to each engine.

In determining the work to bedone, technicians not only do acomplete inspection of the engineand its components, but it alsodocuments its workphotographically. Those photographsare included in each quote that issent to the customer before thework is undertaken.

The company has over the yearsinvested extensively in machiningcapability, which allows it to performa variety of repair and rebuildingactivities.

“We can do almost anything weneed to do in-house,” said Tezoto.“We’re very self-sufficient. We alsospend a lot of time on training. When you have people who knowhow to use all of the tools, you cando a better job for the customer.”

That kind of dedication from theservice dealers that interact mostdirectly with the customers is whatPerkins had in mind in setting up itsnetwork. And it’s got the companyoptimistic about the future.

“We can say that after two years,we have achieved all the goals weset,” said Costa. “Now we can go tocustomers and say you should buyour engine for your machine becauseyou know we can give you productsupport.”• This article appears courtesy of

Power News: What is remanufacturing?

Andrew Wright: In its simplest formremanufacturing takes a dirty, used bit of core (acomponent) and restores it to an as new orbetter than the original specification. For example,

we can take a fuel pump made six years ago andmake it to the latest design specification.

This remanufactured part will perform as goodor better than the original product.

Power News: Why is remanufacturingbecoming so important?

Andrew Wright: With emissions tiers changingevery three to four years, remanufacturing willbecome an important service solution for manyend users. This process will help keep partsavailable; especially once products are phased out. It’s also a cheaper alternative for the customerwho wants a reliable, cost effective servicesolution for their engine.

Power News: Are there any environmentalbenefits?

Andrew Wright: Remanufacturing is a no wasteprocess, as we’re taking material away fromlandfill and recycling it. Currently 70 per cent ofthe material used in the original manufacturingprocess is recovered: a figure that is increasingall the time, with 85 per cent of the energyfrom the original process also being preserved.Remanufacturing is the ultimate form ofrecycling.

With new emissions regulations being introduced every few yearsPerkins’ Power Exchange Programme is working hard to ensure endusers have easy access to parts for their heritage engines.

Keen to be able to provide its customers with quality parts forheritage and phased out products, Perkins’ remanufacturingprogramme utilises years of experience to offer end users a fast, costeffective service solution which is also environmentally friendly.

Power News caught up with Power Exchange product group managerAndrew Wright at the European Remanufacturing Centre atShrewsbury, to find out more about the programme.

A cost-effective solutionPower News: When is a piece of coreremanufactured?

Andrew Wright:: Generally it’s when a part hasfailed or has completed a certain number ofhours / miles.

Power News: What is the difference betweena new part and a remanufactured one?

Andrew Wright: There is no difference between anew part and one that has been remanufactured.Every part is taken back to the original designintent and tested to the original tolerances, and allcome with a 12 month warranty. A remanufacturedpart performs the same and looks the same. Theonly difference is the cost to the end user as theremanufactured part is more often than not 60-70per cent of the cost of a new equivalent part.

Power News: What can be remanufactured?

Andrew Wright: The range of core which can beremanufactured is continually growing but itincludes oil pumps, short and long engines, lift

pumps, cylinder heads, crankshafts, conrods, compressors, alternators and turbochargersamong many other products.

Power News: How does the Perkins PowerExchange Programme work?

Andrew Wright: The programme has beendeveloped over a number of years and is a simpleprocess that ensures the customers’ productivityis maintained. The customer orders aremanufactured part, receives and installs it intheir engine, and returns the old part to us.

Power News: Is the Perkins Power ExchangeProgramme only applicable to Perkins’heritage products?

Andrew Wright: No. The programme supports theheritage models such as the 3.152 and the 4.236,but it’s also up to date with the 1000 Series andfrom early next year it will cover the Tier 3 fuelinjection system, 1100 Series, 700 Series and the400 Series.

Power News: What has the response to thePower Exchange Programme been like?

Andrew Wright: There has been a great responsein North America and Europe, particularly in thepower generation and agricultural sectors. Peoplehave immediately latched onto the benefits –namely the product looks the same, works thesame, comes with a year’s warranty and ischeaper. We’re currently promoting theprogramme in South Africa and the Middle East, and will launch it in Asia, India and Russia earlynext year.

Power News: How do people find out moreabout Perkins Power Exchange Programme?

Andrew Wright: Information on the programme isavailable from Perkins’ distribution network andon www.perkins.com.

Growing presence

For the fifth consecutive yearthe Moretti team has clinchedvictory in the Italian TractorPulling Championship’s pro-stockcategory.

Powered by Perkins’ 1006.6Tengine, generating nearly 1,000horsepower, the tractor beat offcompetition from the likes ofCNH and John Deere amongothers.

In addition to Perkins’ power, the passion and technical solutionsused by the Moretti Brothersensured they took the trophy in2008.

Engine reliability and thetractor performance throughoutthe season, kept the Moretti teamin first place, ensuring yet anothersuccessful year for the Italianteam.

Five in a row in Italy

A fantastic 60 years as a Perkinsdistributor was recently celebratedby Fred Rasmussen.

The Danish distributor invitedPerkins representatives to help itcelebrate its special anniversarywith a meal in one of Denmark’soldest restaurants, The Old Inn,built in 1683.

Situated in Odense Denmark,Fred Rasmussen’s relationship withPerkins started in the 1940s whena Perkins engine was installed intoa Triangel Bus chassis. Over theyears Rasmussen developed itsknowledge and experience withthe Perkins product, and in 1965 it

secured the franchise for RollsRoyce diesels. The company’srelationship with Perkins wasreinforced again when Perkinsacquired the Rolls Royce Dieselbusiness in 1984.

The additional acquisition of theDorman Diesel engine business byPerkins in 1994 further cementedthe partnership and expanded theproduct range available to Danishcustomers.

One of Perkins’ first distributorsto achieve Level 3 status in 2005,Perkins was delighted to help FredRasmussen celebrate this significantachievement.

Rasmussen passes60-year milestone

Service history: Representatives from Fred Rasmussen and Perkins outsideThe Old Inn where the team enjoyed a celebratory meal.

Busy times: Jaz Gill, Perkins’ generalmanager for the Asia Pacific is excitedby the future business opportunities.

Their challenge is to really attack theexport market and our expertise ishelping them achieve this goal. Youonly have to look at the likes ofSunward, the construction equipmentcompany, to see how it is benefittingfrom its dealings with Perkins.

Power News: What are regionalOEMs looking for from Perkins?

Jaz Gill: Obviously the product has tobe right, together with the technicaland product support. However, whatwe do find as important is the way weconduct our business dealings. Mutualrespect plays a key part in ourbusiness relationships and also theunderstanding that personalresponsibility is taken very seriouslyby employees of customercompanies. We are very aware thatone cannot undermine or show scantregard for this sense of personalresponsibility. Another fascinatingaspect is the tremendous thirst forknowledge that customers have andit’s important to reciprocate. Theyrealise that they are facing manychallenges and are keen to learn howwe can help.

Power News: What challenges doesPerkins face?

Jaz Gill: There are a number of areaswhere we’d like to make progress. The Chinese domestic marketrepresents a significant challenge butone we believe is surmountable withthe 1100 Series scheduled to beginproduction in Wuxi in 2009. We alsowant to do more work on presentingPerkins’ full range offering to the AsiaPacific region in general. From the400 Series to the 4000 Series there isan engine solution available for all andany applications; it’s our job to make

sure that the Perkins’ brand isassociated with that sentiment and is‘top of mind’ amongst OEMs. To thatend we are doing trade shows, localPR and business seminars. Presentlywe are involved in about 50 projectswith OEMs so the message seems tobe getting through!

Power News: What kind of demandsdoes this make of your time?

Jaz Gill: It makes for a pretty hecticschedule! For instance last month Itravelled to the UK twice, attended adistributor forum in Thailand, went toKuala Lumpur, Perth and Sydney tosee distributors and customers. The

fact is that we are never closed forbusiness, it really is 24/7, simplybecause of the differing time zones. When China’s asleep I can be talkingto Peterborough and vice versa.

Power News: So do you get tospend any time in Singapore?

Jaz Gill: Yes, I try not to travel twoconsecutive weeks so I have time tocatch up with things here. Luckily wenow have a 25-strong team acrossAsia to keep things running smoothly.

Power News: Thanks for your time.

“Without doubt Chinawill play an enormousrole in developing ourbusiness.”

EUROPE

page 16 Perkins Power News

Power News: Can you give us anupdate of Perkins’ activities in the AsiaPacific region?

Jaz Gill: Well one thing’s for sure, weare very busy. Perkins’ presence in theregion has grown visibly as we seek togrow engine sales and move towardsmanufacturing engines in China. Withoffices in Beijing, Shanghai, HongKong, Japan and Australia, as well asSingapore, we are now well placed towork with local OEMs.

It is interesting to note that thespread of business has changed overthe last couple of years as ourpresence has increased. Previouslymany of our engines were earmarkedfor electric power generationapplications, but now there is a fargreater emphasis on general industrialapplications; in other words there is abetter mix of business.

Power News: Do you expect thattrend to continue?

Jaz Gill: Almost certainly. Demand forPerkins power is increasing as OEMsrecognise that they can deal with uslocally and that we can providesupport in their territory.

Engine sales have increased by 200per cent in the last four years andthere’s every indication that this willcontinue. When the Wuxi facility inChina comes on line this month, it willhelp fuel engine sales growthsignificantly.

Power News: Clearly China has amajor part to play for the Perkinsbrand in this part of the globe?

Jaz Gill: Without doubt China willplay an enormous role in developingour business. We have committedsubstantial resources to re-establishingour credentials in the country. Theinvestment in the Wuxi factory, theappointment of Lei Shin Hong andWestrac as distributors to supplementthe presence of Elco, means that weare in a good position to help ChineseOEMs.

Power News reports on a Canadian OEM whose trackedvehicles have become the machine of choice for customersin a variety of market sectors.

Tracked vehicles have a uniquecapability to traverse soft surfaceslike sand, mud, and snow where aperson would literally sink.

The secret is spreading theweight of the vehicle and payloadover a large area, which minimizesthe amount of weight the surfacehas to support.

Camoplast, Inc. of Granby,Quebec has taken advantage of thisprinciple to build a thrivingbusiness in tracked off-roadvehicles. Their extremely lowground pressure, combined withvery favorable horsepower toweight ratios made possible byhigh-efficiency diesel powertrains, have made Camoplast’s Go-Tractunits the vehicles of choice for agrowing list of industrial, recreational, government, andmilitary users.

“An average man walkingproduces a ground pressurebetween five and seven psi”reports Camoplast’s sales andmarketing director, ChristianMartin. “A fully-loaded Go-TractGT-1600-HY with a 16,000 pound(7,257 kg) payload weighs 34,216pounds (15,519 kg) with a groundpressure of only 3,85 psi (269g/cm2).

“Our Go-Tract GT-1200-HYdoes even better,” he said. “Fullyloaded it weighs in at 23,850pounds (10,818 kg) but has aground pressure of only 3.03 psi(213 g/cm2), between about halfand one-third as much as a man –and that’s carrying a 12,000 pound(5,443 kg) payload.

“Those figures are the reasonGo-Tract vehicles are found insome of the world’s mostinhospitable places carryingpersonnel, aerial devices, drillingequipment, digger derricks, fuel, and virtually everything else people

need to survive and work in hostileenvironments,” Martin added.

“They can be found supportingeverything from mineralexploration and power lineinspection to back country searchand rescue operations all over theworld”.

In keeping with their intendedroles, Camoplast Go-Tract vehiclesare rugged, no-nonsenseworkhorses. They feature a one oroptional two-person cab, a tough, stable walking beam suspension, solid road wheels, and durablerubber tracks with steelreinforcement.

Available safety and comfortoptions range from outside mirrorsand rear washer/wiper installations,to cab air-conditioning, brushguards, and remote controlledspotlights.

While low ground pressure letsa Go-Tract traverse terrain a manliterally cannot walk across, it’stheir outstanding power to weightratios that ensure peakperformance under the mostchallenging operating conditions.

The power comes from a 6-cylinder Perkins 1106D turbo-diesel configured to deliver either193 bhp (144 kW) and 624 ft. lb.(846 Nm) of torque in the GT-1600-HY, or 157 bhp (117 kW) and473 ft. lb. (641 Nm) of torque inthe GT-1200-HY.

The engines drive Sauer-Danfosspumps which feed Sauer-Danfossmotors connected to Bonfigioliplanetary final drives. Each track isindependently microprocessor-controlled to provide vehiclesteering.

“Considering the kinds of placesthese vehicles spend most of theirtime, reliability and ease ofmaintenance are both critical,”Martin continued. “And so is the

availability of service and spareparts literally anywhere in theworld. Those are all reasons whywe settled on the Perkins diesel topower the GT-1200-Hy and GT-1600-HY vehicles.”

Marc LePage, Perkins Quebec &Maritimes development manager, said: “The 1106D family is a well-proven design that’s in service allover the world.

“It has standard features likesingle-side servicing, and a 500hour service interval that make itideal for tough, demandingapplications like Camoplast’s.”

The engine is U.S. EPA Tier IIIand E.U. Stage IIIa emissionscompliant, another factor that isimportant to Camoplast.

“Many of the all-terrain vehiclesin the fleet today are nearing theend of their useful lives,” Martinnoted.

“The Go-Tract series and ourother vehicles represent the nextgeneration of this technology, andthat includes both improved cross-country performance, and greatlyreduced emissions.

“Our goal is to tread lightly onthe ground, and have a minimumimpact on the environment,” headded, “and Perkins power is oneof many ways we will achieve thatgoal.”

Versatile performers: Camoplast’sGo-Tract off-road vehicles are rugged,no-nonsense workhorses capable oftraversing soft surfaces like sand, mud and snow.

Hard work, design expertise and engineering excellence arejust a few of the words you could use to describe Dieci’sapproach to developing a new product.

From its Italian headquarters inMontecchio Emilia, Dieci hasproduced a classic rotoscopictelehandler which is already provingto be popular with customersaround the world.

The Pegasus 50.21 telehandler isone of the company’s most popularrotating machines, sitting midway inthe product range which offers 16-25m in boom lengths.

In addition to its excellentmanoeuvrability the Pegasus has arotating turret, enabling the user toreach areas impossible to accesswith traditional machinery.

Thanks to its 360 degree rotationand use of four stabilisers whichmake it particularly stable, thePegasus’ sturdy boom has a uniqueload capacity and precise movement, even at maximum extension, enabling a large work area to becovered from a single position.

The machine utilises a CANbussystem which uses four transducersto monitor the load, along withlength and angle sensors to governthe extension and the height of theboom. This information iscontinually monitored andcompared with the data saved insidethe onboard controller to preventencroaching into a dangerousposition.

The entire Pegasus range is fittedwith Perkins engines with the 50.21model powered by the 1104D-E44TA rated at 106kW at 2,200rpm.

Riccardo Bisi, now a consultant atDieci after 35 years as the

company’s R&D manager explainedwhy Perkins had been chosen.

“Everybody was asking for Perkinsbecause it has a worldwide servicenet that customers can rely on. It’s avery important agreement for us,and is one more thing that helps ussell more machines,” said Riccardo.

Perkins engineers were also onhand to support the Italian OEMwith last year’s changes to thePegasus range, carrying out detailedchecks on the cooling system andthe hydraulics.

“Another bonus is that Perkinsdeveloped the engine for customersonly, and not for itself, like a truckproducer, so the service-net is muchmore customer-orientated,” statedRiccardo, adding that enginereliability, low fuel consumption andreduced noise levels were alsoimportant factors.

The redesigned Pegasus has alarge, fashionably styled cab, providing increased room for theoperator, greater visibility and areduction in noise levels.

To support the needs of itsworldwide customer base the rototelehandler has a powerful heatingsystem, a feature which has provedparticularly popular across theScandinavian markets.

The boom on the Pegasus 50.21,which smoothly soars 21 metresinto the air, has a five tonne liftingcapacity, and is easy to maintainthanks to its three section chain-linked design.

A wide range of accessories from

baskets to winches are available, supported by a quick attachmechanism.

With a growing share of themarket and production levels fortelehandlers continuing to increase,Dieci is looking forward to a brightfuture.
