India’s nominee to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) Dalveer Bhandari (70) was re-elected to fifth and the last seat of world court after Britain withdrew its candidate from the election.

Mr. Bhandari received 183-193 votes in the General Assembly and secured all the 15 votes in the Security Council after separate and simultaneous elections were held at the UN headquarters in New York.

This is the first time since the ICJ was established in 1945 that there will be no British judge in ICJ. Bhandari is fourth Indian judge to be elected to ICJ after B.N. Rau, Nagendra Singh and RS Pathak.

Shubhangi Swaroop became the first-ever female pilot to be inducted into the Indian Navy. She will soon fly Maritime Reconnaissance aircraft. She is native of Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh.Swaroop who has been appointed in the Naval Armament Inspection (NAI) branch will now undergo pilot training at Dundigal Air Force Academy, Hyderabad which trains pilots of Indian Army, Navy and the Air Force.Besides Swaroop, Astha Segal from New Delhi, Roopa A from Puducherry and Sakthi Maya S from Kerala also created history by becoming country’s first women officers at Naval Armament Inspection (NAI) branch of Navy. They were among 328 cadets who passed out from the Indian Naval Academy's first batch of female officers.

India’s wrestler Ritu Phogat (48kg) clinched a silver medal in the Under-23 Senior World Wrestling Championship at Poland. She won silver medal in 48 kg category.

She entered into final by defeating Bulgarian Wrestler Selishka in Quarter finals and Chinese Wrestler Jiang Zhu in the semi-final. In the gold medal bout (in the final match), she lost against Turkish Wrestler Evin Demirhan and stand in second with a silver medal.

Previously, she won gold medal at the Commonwealth Wrestling in Singapore in the 48 kg category, bronze medal at the Asian Championships. She also won National championship, which was held Indore.

Actor-playwright Girish Karnad was on 19 November 2017 conferred with Tata Literature Live! Lifetime Achievement Award 2017 for his outstanding contribution in the field of theatre at the eighth edition of the Tata Literature festival held in Mumbai, Maharashtra.A Rhodes Scholar, Mr Karnad was born in 1938 and studied philosophy, politics, and economics at Lincoln and Magdalen colleges in Oxford between 1960–63, earning his Master of Arts degree in philosophy, political science and economics. He has been composing award winning plays and films for over five decades ever since. He is recipient of Jnanpith Award, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri awards.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has been conferred the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development for 2017.The award jury, which chose the 85-year-old economist and politician for the award, was chaired by former President Pranab Mukherjee. India’s Manushi Chhillar (20) was crowned coveted Miss World crown for the year 2017 at a glittering event in China, ending 17 years of drought for India at the international pageant. Priyanka Chopra brought home coveted title in the year 2000.The winner of 2016 title, Puerto Rico’s Stephanie Del Valle passed on her crown to Ms Chhillar. Miss England Stephanie Hill was first runner up and Miss Mexico Andrea Meza was second runner up. Around 108 women from across world participated in 2017 beauty pageant.Chhillar is the sixth Indian to win the coveted crown, which was first won by Reita Faria back in 1966. Aishwarya Rai had bagged the title in 1994, followed by Diana Haydon in 1997, Yukta Mookhey in 1999 and Priyanka Chopra in 2000, the last for India.

South Africa’s Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters (22) was crowned Miss Universe at pageant held at The AXIS theatre at Planet Hollywood casino-resort on the Las Vegas Strip. The runner-up was Miss Colombia Laura Gonzalez, while the second runner-up was Miss Jamaica Davina Bennett.

With this she becomes, second South African to win this crown after Margaret Gardiner who had won Miss Universe 1978.

Ninety-two contestants from around the world participated in the decades-old competition. This year’s edition had the most contestants ever, including the first ever representatives of Cambodia, Laos and Nepal.

World NewsChina launches world’s first fully electric cargo ship

China on 14 November 2017 launched world's first fully electric cargo ship in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province. It is the first ship in the world to use lithium ion battery. It was manufactured by the Guangzhou Shipyard International Company Ltd. The ship will be mainly used to run in inland section of Pearl River for carrying coal for generation of electric power.It is 70.5 meters long and has battery energy of about 2400 kilowatt hours which is the same energy of 40 new energy cars. It can run 80 kilometers after being charged for two hours. Its highest speed is 12.8 kilometers per hour, and there is zero emission of waste gas pollutants.

Scientists have developed the world’s first artificial intelligence politician, SAM that can answer a person’s queries regarding local issues such as policies around housing, education and immigration.

The virtual politician was created by Nick Gerritsen, a 49-year-old entrepreneur in New Zealand.

The AI politician is constantly learns to respond to people through Facebook Messenger as well as a survey on its homepage. It may help to bridge the growing political and cultural divide in many countries

Science & TechnologyBrahMos cruise missile successfully test-fired from Sukhoi-30 MKI for first time

Brahmos ALCM, which weighs 2.5 tonnes, is the heaviest weapon to be deployed on India’s Su-30 fighter aircraft. It has a range of 290 km.

BrahMos is a joint venture between India and Russia and named after the Brahmaputra and Moscowa rivers.

The world’s fastest supersonic cruise missile BrahMos was successfully test fired from a Sukhoi-30MKI fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force for the first time.

The missile was gravity dropped from Su-30MKI from its fuselage and two-stage missile’s engine fired up and was propelled towards the intended target in Bay of Bengal.

The mission will rely on special parachute to slow spacecraft down as it enters Martian atmosphere at over 12,000 mph (5.4 kilometers per second). The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) successfully tested supersonic landing parachute that will be deployed in its Mars rover mission set to launch in 2020.The Advanced Supersonic Parachute Inflation Research Experiment (ASPIRE), mission’s parachute-testing series was launched on 17.7-metre-tall Black Brant IX sounding rocket for evaluation of ASPIRE payload performance.

JPSS-1 lifted off on a United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. It is first multi-day weather forecasts satellite in NOAA’s series of four, next-generation operational environmental satellitesThe satellite will improve weather forecastings, such as predicting hurricane’s track and will help agencies involved with post-storm recovery by visualizing storm damage and the geographic extent of power outages.

This marks an improvement of three spots as compared to previous year’s rank.The annual IMD World Talent Ranking covers 63 countries and assessed methods countries adopted to attract and retain talent. Through Saubhagya Web portal, every State can fill in the current status of progress of electrification works which will enable accountability for the State utility/ DISCOM.It offers a feature on village electrification camps and in line with that, DISCOMs will organize camps in villages for facilitating instant filling up of application forms and to complete requisite documentation to expedite release of electricity connections to households.

During the meeting, a comprehensive review was undertaken to measure the progress and examine steps taken by the police and civil administration for women's safety.The Safe city plan will serve as robust emergency response system and provides police-verified public transport will come into place. In the meeting, it was decided that police and municipal corporations of these metropolitan cities will frame plan of action.The plan will be forwarded by respective State Level Committee headed by Chief Secretary of the state. Later it will be then assessed by Steering Committee headed by Home Secretary, which will make suitable recommendations.

The Union government has initiated the process of formulating comprehensive 'safe-city' plans for women in eight metropolitan cities of the country. It will be implemented in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Lucknow, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Decision in this regard was taken Steering Committee meeting under chairmanship of Union Home Secretary.
