Concept and Idea of MEN

The Management Education Network is a „MBA in a nutshell“ providing management techniques to answer the following questions

• How will a global world change my business? • How can I manage this influence on my business? • How can I develop innovative products and services to react on theses

influences? • How can I manage the changes of internal processes and structures to meet

new market requirements? • How can I efficiently and effectively control the success and the gainings? • How can I manage a sustainable change to stay competitive?

Methods used in MEN

The Management Education Network • provides three times a year an intensive learning environment at SHMT • provides a case-oriented, cross-company, team learning • enables the participants to work on a company specific case for 1 year to apply

the management tools and techniques learnt in MEN • provides a supervision for the company specific case during the year of MEN • follows the idea of a community in which participants become part of network

that will exist for years and in which professional friendships can arise • integrates company representatives (twice a year) in order to

• get company feedback with regard to ongoing MEN • discuss strategic topics to enrich MEN out of a company perspective

Introduction

Director STI Management Education Prof. Dr.-Ing. Joachim Warschat studied engineering (special field: production engineering) at university of Stuttgart. In 1980 he was awarded a PhD with the topic "Dynamic optimization of technical and economic systems". Prof. Warschat qualified as a university lecturer with his research on "Planning Methods for just in time production and storage at optimal cost" in 1997. He is director at the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering and Human Factors. Prof. Warschat is teaching and innovation management at Feruniversität Hagen. At university of Stuttgart he is teaching project management, simultaneous engineering, and simulation technology.

Innovation Management Dr. Patrick Stähler Founder and Partner of fluidminds GmbH, Zurich Lecturer at Universities St. Gallen, Zeppelin and Steinbeis Dr. Patrick Stähler is Founder & Partner of fluidminds, the business innovators, based in Zurich and Sydney, inventor-by-chance of the business model innovation concept, forefather of the business model canvas and author of the book "Das Richtige gründen: Werkzeugkasten für Unternehmer". Since his time as an investment banker at Lazard Frères, his interest is in how technologies shape and even can create new industries and how companies can achieve über-rents from innovation. During his research at the University of St. Gallen, he found that a new unit of analysis, the business model, is needed in management to harvest the benefits from a new technology. So he published in his Ph.D. thesis in 2001 the business model innovation concept, that is widely known today. He writes regularly on his blog Business-Model-Innovation.com to this topic. The blog hast around 80.000 visitors per year. He has a mixed portfolio of work, ranging from consulting to lectureships in Executive Education at Universities like St. Gallen, Steinbeis or Zeppelin and inhouse-courses for large corporations. The topic is always on business model innovation.

Prof. Dr. Chris van der Hoven Visiting Academic Cranfield School of Management, UK & Wits Business School, RSA

Lecturer of 3rd to 5th day (1st week)

Until recently Chris was the Academic Director at Wits Business School in Johannesburg, South Africa. Before that he was a Senior Fellow at Cambridge University where he was also a research lead on the Strategic Technology and Innovation Management (STIM) Consortium at the Centre for Technology Management. Prior to that he was a senior academic at Cranfield School of Management for many years. He still supervises PhD and Masters students in the field of strategy and innovation. His interests include: Disruption theory, Strategy, leadership and dynamic capabilities, The CTO: CEO, board and shareholder dynamics, Strategic value and knowledge creation, Product technology roadmapping / visioning / scouting Strategic alignment and scenario planning, Change and innovative cultures, Customer and market intelligence Business model & service innovation, NPD / NSD and R&D processes His PhD at Cambridge University explored the role of innovation and technology leaders when strategizing or reacting to major market, technological or business discontinuities. Chris has an MBA from Cranfield and a BSc (QS) from the University of Cape Town. He has been a member of the Institute of Directors (IoD), the International Association of Facilitators (IAF) and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

Lecturer of 1st to 2nd day (2nd week)

Prof. Ing. Marco Cantamessa Professor at DISPEA - Dipartimento dei Sistemi di Produzione ed Economia dell'Azienda, Politecnico di Torino, Italy Marco Cantamessa is Full Professor at the Department of Management and Production Engineering of Politecnico di Torino, where he teaches Management of Innovation and Product Development. He has had lecturing appointments at European universities and business schools such as EPFL, SIMT, ESCP and has authored more than one hundred papers in the fields of manufacturing systems engineering and of management of innovation. He is a member of INFORMS, PDMA and the Strategic Management Society. He has been founding member of The Design Society, serving on the Board of Management from 2000 to 2005, and now part of the Advisory Board. He has served on the boards of numerous institutions engaged in entrepreneurship and technology transfer. Since 2008, he is Chairman of the Board and CEO of I3P, the startup incubator of Politecnico di Torino, which is one of the leading university incubators in Europe. From 2014 to 206, he has been President of PNICube, the Italian association of university incubators, and currently serves on its Board. More recently, he has been nominated non-executing chairman of Neva Finventures S.p.A., the corporate venture capital arm of the Intesa Sanpaolo Bank, and of Compagnia Valdostana delle Acque S.p.a., a leading green energy company in Italy.

Prof. Dr. John Glen Senior Lecturer in Economics Cranfield School of Management, UK Prof. Glen specializes in teaching micro economics, industrial organization and is the author of several books relating to competition policy and deregulation. His teaching at Cranfield School of Management has contributed to the electives on Economic Perspectives on Globalization, Advanced Macroeconomics Economic, Economics of Organizations and Strategy and Quantitative Methods. Prof. Glen has recently completed a sector risk assessment for a European Bank. He is currently researching the impact of Regional Development Agencies on Local Government Economic Development Strategies (sponsored by UNISON), He is also an advisor to the London Development Agency and the Greater London Authority. Prof. Glen recently provided advise to the English Football Association on television rights negotiations for FA cup and ‘Team England’ television rights. Prof. Glen also holds a number of Non Executive directorships. Prof. Glen has a BSc in Economics from the University of Wales and an MSc in Economics from the University of Salford.

Prof. Richard B. Dasher Director, US-Asia Technology Management Center Consulting Professor, Stanford University At Stanford University, Dr. Dasher has directed the US-Asia Technology Management Center and held Consulting Faculty appointments since 1994. From 1998 – 2015, he served concurrently as Executive Director of the Center for Integrated Systems, which was widely regarded as a model for industry-funded university research. His research areas include regional and national innovation ecosystems, open innovation and innovation management, and the impact of selected new technologies on industry value chains and their dynamics. Dr. Dasher also maintains an active management consulting practice, currently serving as advisor to startup companies, business accelerators, and venture capital firms in Silicon Valley, China, Japan, S. Korea, and Thailand. From 2004, Dr. Dasher became the first non-Japanese person ever to join the governance of a Japanese national university, serving on the Board of Directors of Tohoku University and continuing on their Management Council through 2010. He now also serves on review panels and advisory committees for government S&T programs, such as the Canada Excellence Research Chairs program (CERC), the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), the Thailand Institute for Scientific and Technological Research (TISTR), and Japan’s World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI).

Finance and Accounting Prof. Dr. Zacharias Sautner Professor of Finance Head Finance Department Frankfurt School of Finance and Management gemeinnützige GmbH Zacharias Sautner is Professor of Finance at Frankfurt School of Finance & Management. He also heads the Finance Department at Frankfurt School, which is - with 20 Professors - one of the largest German research department in finance. He was previously Associate Professor of Finance at the University of Amsterdam and, prior to that, Research Fellow at the Saïd Business School of the University of Oxford. Zacharias Sautner does research in the area of corporate finance, especially on corporate governance, executive compensation, and bankruptcy. His research was published in leading international journals such as the Journal of Finance, Review of Financial Studies, or Review of Finance and has been presented at leading international conferences such as the AFA, WFA, and EFA. He teaches in the corporate finance, corporate valuation, and corporate governance. He has won various awards for his research and teaching. His expertise is frequently cited in newspapers such as Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Financial Times or Die Zeit. Zacharias Sautner holds a PhD in Finance from the University of Mannheim and studied at University of York and Berufsakademie Stuttgart.

Managing Strategic Change

Prof. Dr. Ron Sanchez PhD in Technology Strategy, MS in Civil Engineering, BS in Architecture and BS in Humanities and Science from MIT and an Executive MBA (with honors) from Saint Mary’s College of California.

Ron Sanchez is Visiting Professor of Management at Copenhagen Business School (Department of Industrial Economics and Strategy) and National University of Singapore. Prior to these positions, Dr. Sanchez was Professor of Strategy and Technology Management at IMD (International Institute for Management Development), Lausanne, Switzerland.

Before joining IMD on July,1 1999 Prof. Sanchez was a Visiting Professor of Management at the Copenhagen Business School (1998-1999); Associate Professor of Management at the University of Western Australia (1996-1998); Assistant Professor of Policy and Strategy at the University of Illinois (1991-1996); Visiting Professor of Strategic Management at Ecole Supérieure des Sciences Economiques et Commerciales (ESSEC). Prof. Sanchez was also a consultant in establishing joint ventures and product development collaborations between U.S., European and Japanese firms.

His research interests include theory and practice of competence-based strategic management; Modularity in product, process, and knowledge based architectures; knowledge management and strategic organizational learning; options theory in strategic management and strategic flexibility.

Required Presentations: Transfer Workshops / Final Presentation

• Transfer Workshops will take place at the end of each week • The objective is to prepare a short (!) presentation rolling up the subjects of the lectures

of the week focusing on the participant’s company situation • Templates with questions will be provided • At the beginning of the 2nd and 3rd the results are presented to the group (max. 15 min

including questions / discussion)

Transfer Workshops at the end of 1st and 2nd week

Final Presentation at the end of 3rd week • The Final Presentation will be held at the end of the 3rd week. It should not take more than 15

minutes. The audience consists of MEN participants and representatives of the participating network companies.

• The presentation should show an adoption of the lessons learned out of the 1st and 2nd week applied to the specific situation of the company (or department / unit) and your MEN key findings.

• The results of the transfer workshops can and should be re-used for the final presentation • Usually, templates based on company’s individual CI are used • The topic or at least a (preliminary) headline should be defined at the end of the 2nd week • Ideally the presentation should be finalized before the beginning of the 3rd week.
