YOUR MEMBERSHIP MATTERS
Everyone wants to be part of a winning team. We also want to be
part of a team that keeps winning. And one of the best ways to
keep your momentum going is to celebrate your
accomplishments. One way to do this is by having award
ceremonies to commend great work and spark competition. Our
accomplishments, big or small, are all done with NAWIC energy
and passion.
Over the last few months we have worked hard on several of the
school competitions, scholarships, golf tournament, membership,
WIC Week and Industry Appreciation Night. During this time we
have recognized some very deserving individuals and met some
great people and potential members.
As we continue to grow and seek out new endeavors, I hope you
all know that it is your individual contributions that matter. We
couldn’t be who we are without each of you as part of this
organization.
Finally, I hope that you plan to be part of what the futures holds for
Richmond Chapter 141. What doors will be opened for our
organization? What new opportunities are on the horizon? I hope
that each of you is inspired and standing beside me as we strive to
get to that future together.
I hope you all have a wonderful summer! Relax, Life is Beautiful.

The critical workforce shortage our industry predicted some time ago is happening now, and AGC Virginia has taken the lead to address this issue. With the economy improving and the number of new projects increasing, AGC Virginia’s member firms are looking to us to help them fill immediate and future job openings.
As a result of this important member and industry need, workforce development is a primary focus area for our association at the local, state and national level.
AGC Virginia will coordinate with other construction industry employers to work together with all the state government groups, including the Department of Education to continue to move these principles forward.
• Work toward having a coordinated statewide strategy • Increase overall state funding to support Career, Technical & Agricultural
Education initiatives • Provide the highest Quality Training and Education in commercial
construction • Consistency of the graduates regardless of institution • Align skills training with the job opportunities • Support Work-Based Learning with employment opportunities • Increase number of students directly transitioning from high school to the
technical colleges

HEALTH & SAFETY: LOTO
Have you heard of lockout/tagout (LOTO)?
When a machine — electrical, hydraulic or mechanical — can
unexpectedly engage during service and maintenance, the action of the
device must be blocked. Electrical sources must be de-energized and locked
in the off position to prevent injuries from hazardous energy. Without such
a block out or lockout, workers can be killed; they can be electrocuted or
crushed; and they can lose fingers, hands and arms.
Simply turning off a machine isn’t enough if
there’s the potential for someone to turn it on,
the potential for a short in the switch to
restart power, or the potential for a sudden
energy burst. Locks (for lockout) are the first
line of defense for those who are involved in
maintenance, repairing, cleaning, servicing and
adjusting machinery.
Warning tags (for tagout) supplement the use of locks. Participate in all
LOTO training and refresher programs offered by your employer. Learn
safety procedures for any new piece of equipment. “Behind every successful
woman is a tribe of other successful women, who have her back.”
I would like to thank everyone for all they have done for me and
my family. This has been a difficult time for us and you will never
know how much all your love and support has meant to us. I am
reminded everyday of just how special NAWIC is to me. Thank you
again.” Love, Wendy McQuiggan
