• 2008: Phoenix City Council adopted a mandate to reduce

greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to 5% below the 2005 levels

by 2015.

• 2009: 2005 GHG Inventory for city operations completed

– GHG emissions projected to rise 14% if the city did not take appropriate

action

• 2012: Inventory update found that Phoenix already surpassed

the 5% reduction goal

– Phoenix City Council adopted a new goal to reduce GHG emissions to 15%

below 2005 levels by 2015

2015 Goal: 15% Reduction

• Employee commuting emissions are dominated by gasoline

in both 2005 and 2015.

• 2015 accounted for bus and light rail which was not

reported in originally 2005. However, bus commuting miles

have been backcasted for 2005.

2015 Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Reduction Report

sustainabilitysolutions.asu.edu

Thank you to city of Phoenix employees, residents and

business owners, who are on the ground supporting the city’s

efforts and who are working toward reducing their own

greenhouse gas emissions. It may seem like we have a long

way to go, but as this report proves, we can make a difference.
