Dublin airport has connections to
hundreds of destinations – this
allows the attraction of footloose
industries especially in the IT
industry as their imports and
exports may be light but expensive
goods eg Intel uses Dublin airport.
The opening of Terminal 2 will
increase the possibility of growth.
Irish News
Media uses the
motorways to
transport their
papers to all
parts of the
country
Ease of access – easy imports
and exports – avoid city
congestion
Companies are
attracted to export
their goods to Britain
and the wider
European markets
The counties of Kildare
and Meath provide beef,
cereals and dairy for the
manufacturing industry Much of the barley
grown in the GDA
is used for the
brewing industry eg
Guinness Kepak group in Meath
employs over 900 people in
its meat production plant
using animals from the GDA
and it supplies beef, lamb
and pork to Dublin’s 1.2
million population
Human Advantages for the location of
industry
Industrial estates on the
outskirts of Dublin attract
industry – these are serviced
sites – are close to motorways –
avoid the traffic congestion of
city centre - ‘Forward
factories’ being built –
These are ready to use
factories with everything
supplied for the companies to
move into to start production
immediately – eg Parkwest
(along the M50)
Also attractive as workers live
nearby in housing estates
M1,M4, M6, M7
The construction of the M50 has allowed factories to
locate outside the main city areas away from the traffic
congestion of older industrial areas within the city.
Wages in the
GDA are 10%
above the EU
average and this
provides a market
for manufactured
goods.

Highly qualified graduates also
attract medical production
industries eg MGS
Manufacturing group Leixlip.
Other products include contact
lenses, diabetes injections and
hospital ventilators
Eg carpets
and furniture
produced in
Navan, Co.
Meath
The government has attracted industry by
offering incentives- low corporation tax of
12.5% - companies can keep a larger % of
their profits than in EU countries
The IDA offers grants and loans to
companies to set up in the GDA eg Mafic
Ireland ( a company with its headquarters in
Luxembourg) to set up in Kells Co.Meath
As a result of this the GDA
now has become a world
leader in the following
production industries
IT – eg Pulseway - Dublin
ICT -
Software Companies –
Microsoft, Sandyford
Ireland – Right Place – Right Time
