Thinking out of the 2D page Using Zappar: an Augmented Reality application
What is Zappar? Augmented Reality?
How have we used it in Physics lessons?
Why use Zappar?
How to use Zappar?
1. Download Zappar app on your smart device(available on both Apple & Android devices)
2. Scan a Zap Code3. Multimedia appears!
Try scanning this poster as an example:
What is Augmented Reality (AR)?
When viewed through a smart device, AR augments a real world scene by adding data / multimedia. Viewers do not need special equipment (like VR goggles), and generally maintain a sense of presence in the real world.

Having used Zappar as an educational tool for our students for the past 3 years, we have seen 3 major areas where we find Zappar helps to develop in our students:
• Being self-directed learners• Increasing differentiation in the classroom• More engaged learners
Self-directed learning
Zapcodes are printed in worksheets, and in lesson notes where students can access any timewhen they’re doing their own revision or working on their assignments at home. Aside from embedding interesting and related videos within their lesson notes, we also offer studentsa choice whether they would like to have a hint first, or go straight to see if their answer is correct, instead of only providing the final answersuch as in an answer sheet. Students have more control over their pace of learning.
Differentiation in the classroom
Students learn and complete tasks at varied intervals, and teachers will usually cater to the majority, or the class average speed. Zapparhelps both the slow students and the fast students – slower students are still able to access both hints and solutions which has already been covered by the teacher, if they were unable to process that information at that point in time when the teacher was explaining, while faster learners can access extension questions or further enrichment videos while waiting for the rest of the lesson to proceed.
Increased engagement
Let’s face it – students nowadays are already glued to their phones. Why not use that tool for learning, since it’s so readily accessible to them anyway? Students nowadays also have a shorter attention span, particularly when it comes to numbers and words – multimedia helps to capture their attention and imagination, and can often show real world linkages as well.
