ERGONOMIC

CONSIDERATIONS

FOR ANCILLARY

FURNITURE

2016

AS WORK

BECOMES

INCREASINGLY

MOBILE,

WE ASK:

2

ARE YOUR

ANCILLARY

SPACES

WORKING AS

HARD AS THEY

SHOULD?

3

CHECKLISTUse this checklist as an objective guide to

evaluate if your ancillary spaces are working

at their full potential.

This space creates an environment

which supports productive work.

• Is there a surface large enough

to support a laptop?

• Is your keyboard within easy and

comfortable reach?

• Could this space support more than

computer based work?

• Does this space offer a degree of

privacy if necessary?

This space provides table space and

storage for extra ‘stuff’.

• Are you provided a convenient

place for your bag, to avoid reach

and twist?

• Do you have an appropriate space

for reference material, supplies,

and beverages within reach?

This space promotes healthy postures.

• Does the table height align with

the seating height to allow for

a comfortable place to work?

• Are you able to see the screen

without straining your neck?

• When seated, are you in a posture

which allows you to actually work?

This space provides access to necessary

power for electronic devices.

• Do you have a power outlet within

easy reach?

• Are there any electrical cords that could

cause a tripping hazard?

BETTER

POSTURE

101

Place your keyboard at a

comfortable height to

prevent excessive

bending of the wrist

Position your feet flat

on the floor, or take

advantage of a foot

rest if available.

Support the natural

curve of the lumbar, and

avoid twisting your core.

9

10

DOES

THIS LOOK

FAMILIAR?

11

Stylish spaces

can be high performing spaces

with the right planning.

12

THE PROBLEM

Batteries don’t last forever -

leaving us looking for

a place to plug-in.

A SOLUTION

Bring new life to beautiful

lounge settings; make

power available at

convenient locations,

and offer adjustable

personal worksurfaces

for computer or paper-

based work.

DESIGN TIP

13

Pay attention

to seat & table combinations

to avoid uncomfortable spaces.

14

THE PROBLEM

Lounge seating is often

incorrectly paired with

tables that are too high

for comfortable work.

A SOLUTION

The average table surface

is approximately 29” high;

choose a seating solution

with a seat height of 18”

for user comfort.

Lower seat heights require

lower table heights.

A difference of 10-12”

between the seat height

and the table surface is a

good place to start.

DESIGN TIP

15

Even the smallest spaces

can support individual work

or impromptu meetings.

16

THE PROBLEM

In-between spaces often fail

to support productive work.

A SOLUTION

Invite workers to use

every inch of real estate.

Provide appropriate power

and table surfaces.

Make personal worksurfaces

available to support laptop

work.

DESIGN TIP

17

Some spaces

were simply not designed

for meetings.

18

THE PROBLEM

Form over function may

result in a stylish setting,

but style alone does little to

support productivity.

A SOLUTION

Style and productivity can

coexist. Just remember to

support the things that

matter: posture, power, and

personal devices.

DESIGN TIP

19

Designing the office

as if it were a residential space

ignores the fact that the office

is an inherently different kind of place.

20

THE PROBLEM

Coffee tables are meant

for exactly that – coffee.

These tables were never

meant to be a worksurface.

A SOLUTION

Place coffee tables adjacent

to lounge seating for use as

a secondary table surface.

Provide an adjustable

laptop table, convenient

power access and maybe

even a foot rest to create

a truly useful workspace.
