Executive Summary In recent years, virtualization has become a key factor in the delivery of computing resources “on-demand”— making applications and data accessible to users anytime and anywhere, regardless of the physical and geographical location of the user or the server on which the application resides.

Many enterprises have opted for the Server-Based Computing (SBC) model, with core IT resources installed and managed centrally on Terminal Servers. The underlying platform for this is the Microsoft Windows Terminal Server operating system and “Remote Desktop Protocol” (RDP). Increasingly, however, enterprises are seeking to add value to this foundation, with an enterprise access solution which manages and facilitates the secure, on-demand access to the resources, empowering the workforce and generating cost efficiencies, business agility and many other benefits for the business.

Until recently, the only viable option for centrally managed enterprise application access came from Citrix Systems Inc. But now there is a real alternative to Citrix for Server-Based Computing. PowerTerm® WebConnect RemoteView from Ericom® Software enables companies to make a balanced decision on the solution best suited to their particular needs and budget.

Introduction Ericom’s PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView is a server-based solution enabling on-demand access to enterprise-wide applications running on Windows Terminal Servers.

By deploying PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView throughout the enterprise, Ericom customers obtain a centrally managed virtual application access environment that satisfies all the core business needs such as security, reliability, usability, performance, supportability, and cost effectiveness. These factors simplify IT processes and generate substantial cost savings.

Why Centrally Managed Application Access?

Centrally managed application access enables enterprise-wide Windows Terminal Server applications to be deployed, managed, supported, and executed from a central point on the server, rather than distributed on client devices across the enterprise. Ericom’s SBC Solution—PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView Ericom offers a full-featured SBC solution for the Windows Terminal Server (WTS) environment. PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView enables corporations to benefit from secure, centrally managed delivery of Windows Terminal Server-based applications to Windows and Linux desktops, and thin clients, including Windows XPe and CE devices. Moreover, it delivers those applications into the local desktop interface and ensures that local and remote applications share a common behavior.

PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView allows enterprises to simplify and optimize the IT infrastructure, with features and functionality that provide vast improvements over the basic WTS environment. For example, PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView’s powerful True Seamless Windows feature enables users to interact with all the windows within a single desktop regardless of whether the windows are local or remote. With effective centralized management capabilities, system administrators can centrally manage thousands of users, their configurations and connections in one location. What’s more, the right reporting tool can permit companies to assess their actual license needs, when they experience peak usage times, and whether they are over or under-licensed.



Reducing costs (lower TCO)

The limited functionality provided by many SBC solutions may cause enterprises to incur high costs and TCO, out of proportion with any benefits arising. Often this results from poor management toolsets, additional training costs, or staff costs associated with managing server capacities. PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView lowers the enterprise’s TCO and increases the return on IT investment, while addressing overall IT enterprise application access and delivery needs.

PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView’s ‘concurrent’ licensing scheme enables organizations to buy a "pool" of licenses that are shared among many users. With PowerTerm WebConnect, organizations don’t pay for what they don't use. Additional features described elsewhere in this Product Description (such as True Seamless windows) also provide efficiency/usability gains for users, further reducing support overhead.

Robust Security

Another factor driving demand in the enterprise-wide application access arena is security. Harnessing the power of the Internet has become key to remote office connectivity and application access. However, Internet-related enterprise security breaches and stricter legislation are forcing enterprise network administrators to adopt more active roles in addressing overall business system security, including the inadequate nature of security and user access control.

Uniquely, PowerTerm WebConnect includes a built-in secure SSL gateway as a standard component, ensuring that secure communications are an integral part of the access solution in the most cost effective way.

PowerTerm WebConnect can also provide access management within security frameworks powered by third party vendors like Juniper, AEP, Whale and others.

Benefits over Windows Terminal Server

PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView provides the following benefits over WTS :

Application publishing. The capabilities to publish individual applications to users or groups of users, rather than publishing entire desktops, and to publish multiple applications in a single action.



Active Directory integration. System Administrators can define applications sets according to user or group settings imported automatically from Active Directory or LDAP. This saves time and can deliver savings on license costs.

Ease of use: Remote applications can be launched using desktop icons, from the Start menu, from a built-in Web interface (the Application Portal) or via an application launcher – the PowerTerm WebConnect Application Zone.

True Seamless Windows – Remote applications behave just like local applications, giving an intuitive interface with standard navigation techniques between remote and local applications.

Application Load Balancing. Ensures optimal use of server resources and a smooth, reliable user experience.

Centralized management and control. All aspects of the user experience are defined within the centralized administration console - there is no need to visit the desktop or define any settings at the user’s desktop. Also the user interface (the RemoteView Client) can be published as an install-on-demand downloadable client.

Centralized support tools. Provide real-time support for users, from within their session. Helpdesk or support teams can respond instantly through an on-screen messaging system, even taking remote control of the user’s desktop to resolve the issue.

Support for Linux. A Linux client delivers Terminal Server applications to Linux desktops, so users can continue using preferred applications on Linux devices, e.g., Microsoft Office.

Secure communications. SSL encryption and authentication (with server certificates).

Anti-hacker protection. With RemoteView’s single port relay, you can publish information securely beyond the firewall without the need to make the applications, ports, or IPs public.

Application portal. This is an out-of-the-box web interface from which the users can launch applications in a single sign-on, see page 11.

Integration with enterprise portals such as IBM WebSphere Portal, IBM Workplace and Oracle Portal.



Implementing PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView Install Once, Centrally Deploy Everywhere

Implementing PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView is a simple three-step process:

1. One-time installation of PowerTerm WebConnect Server (performed by the System Administrator).

2. Setup of users/groups/connections, and access rights, using the Administration Tool (entities can be imported from Active Directory to accelerate this task).

3. PowerTerm WebConnect Client deployed to all client devices, either via a simple click-through URL sent to all staff (user-initiated), or via MSI (automatically installed).

At this point the user can access server-based applications alongside their local applications. The total timescales of the process depend mainly on the level of granularity required in user configuration (step 2), and the availability of Active Directory to import details in bulk. Most sites complete this within 0.5 – 2 days.

Typical scenario

The following scenario illustrates a typical PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView installation.

1. The System Administrator at the headquarters of an 800-person company installs PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView onto a central server (Linux or Windows) in 10 minutes. She is now ready to assign access rights to a group of 200 users.

2. Using the PowerTerm WebConnect Administration Tool, the Administrator creates users/groups/connections and access rights to the organization’s Windows applications on the Windows Terminal Servers, by importing user details directly from the company’s Active Directory

3. Again using the PowerTerm WebConnect Administration Tool, she publishes one or more applications and documents from the organization’s Windows Terminal Servers.



4. The administrator provides a link to the PowerTerm WebConnect Web Interface (Application Portal) from the company’s Web Server.

5. From one of the company’s branch offices, an Accounts Manager wants to access applications and services stored on servers back at company headquarters. Clicking on the Application Portal link, the Account Manager logs in to the Application Portal using his network credentials.

6. PowerTerm WebConnect authenticates the credentials with the network. If the credentials are valid, the Application Portal is refreshed with the applications which have been published for him, according to his group affiliations.

7. The Account Manager launches the application by clicking on the icon. If this is the first use of PowerTerm WebConnect, the RemoteView client is automatically downloaded and installed on his computer.

8. The published application is launched as a True Seamless Window so that it appears and behaves exactly like a locally installed application. (See the section “True Seamless Windows”.)



PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView Key Features Centralized Administration and Management

PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView’s core management functionality provides full, centralized control to IT administrators over an organization’s applications. PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView’s Administration Tool enables customization of the user environment as well as the ability to configure and monitor resource access, enabling the system administrator to closely follow users’ behavior, easily identify intruders and respond to local and remote users in need of assistance. Additionally, PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView provides an audit option, which records and stores all the connections made in a database for review at a later time.

The user’s environment can be controlled to the level of screen color, fonts, keyboard mapping or even menu display. All such parameters are controlled via configuration settings accessed through the Administration Tool.

Enhanced Security

PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView’s comprehensive security features support enterprise-level security measures. Features include built-in support for an SSL Gateway, so all connections from the client to the Terminal Servers can be encrypted, making them secure across public networks. (Microsoft Terminal Server does not provide an SSL Gateway, and other SBC solutions offer a secure gateway server only as a stand-alone server).

Application Publishing

PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView’s application publishing simplifies remote applications deployment by delivering to the user’s local desktop only the applications they are permitted to use. These applications are accessible from the Desktop or Start menu exactly like locally installed application.This feature, in conjunction with True Seamless Windows, gives a familiar look and feel to the desktop and improves the overall user experience.

When publishing applications the administrator can browse any Terminal Server in the cluster. The administrator can also specify which Terminal Server will be used by the applications (see Load Balancing below for more information).

The unique Multple Application Publishing feature allows several or all the applications on a Terminal Server to be published in a single operation. This



makes the process of getting an installation up and running especially quick and painless.

PowerTerm WebConnect also supports content publishing and URL publishing, so that any resource can easily be made available to the appropriate users and user groups.

Load Balancing

PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView provides highly scalable Terminal Servers and Application Load Balancing capabilities. When a user launches a published application, PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView allocates the best server available, based on customizable balancing criteria (CPU utilization, memory and active sessions, with automatic Terminal Server discovery).

By optimizing server connection sessions, PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView ensures the optimal user experience whilst preventing server overload and downtime, and improving productivity and workflow.

Integration with Directory Services/LDAP

PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView maintains its own database of users and groups, but can integrate with any LDAP-compatible directory server to import user definitions, such as Microsoft Active Directory, Novell eDirectory and IBM Tivoli Directory Server. Using LDAP, the System Administrator can import the existing network configuration rather than having to redefine the configuration. Moreover, PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView can also identify a user for authentication even if they have moved between OUs (Organizational Units). This adds another security layer to the system; if the network user is disabled, then the PowerTerm WebConnect Server will not allow them to log in to the system.

PowerTerm WebConnect does not require administrative privileges in the Directory Service. Also, the Directory Service schema is not modified in any way.




True Seamless Windows

With RemoteView, remote applications on the Terminal Server are fully integrated at the desktop level, delivering ‘True Seamless Windows’. Server-based applications behave on the local desktop just like local applications. By delivering and integrating the remote application rather than an entire ‘virtual’ remote desktop, users are able to work more productively and intuitively. No awkward navigation and scrolling techniques, no additional learning curve and none of the frustration inherent in non-seamless Windows applications.

Many SBC solutions claim to provide seamless windows over RDP, however they typically fail to correctly integrate remote windows into the local desktop. PowerTerm WebConnect is unique in providing True Seamless Windows. True Seamless Windows provide numerous features such as: proper interlacing with local window even when there are multiple remote windows within a single session, support for topmost windows and notification window, correct ALT+TAB behavior and more.

Remote Desktop Support

PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView includes SupportView – a remote Helpdesk support feature offering secure, remote access and control over a user's entire desktop for either training or real-time troubleshooting.

With the Windows native client, SupportView provides a pcAnywhere®-like capability with several further advantages: there’s no need for pre-installation on the client or user configuration, and SupportView is both firewall-friendly and extremely fast.

Another unique advantage of the solution’s remote desktop support functionality is its ability to handle dynamic IP addresses. Even if users are behind firewalls, use DHCP, or connect via one of the Internet Service Providers (AOL, MSN, Earthlink, etc), they can still use the solution’s remote desktop support function. With PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView, system administrators can eliminate pcAnywhere® - like applications, associated support costs and the required firewall configuration changes.

Remote desktop support is valuable for PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView users, and also anyone else on a Windows PC connected to the network. For example, if a user in Tokyo experiences a problem with entering an order, a supervisor in New York can take session control and guide the user on how to correct the problem. This “follow the sun” support can reduce user downtime in the event of problems.



Single Sign-On

The PowerTerm WebConnect Server can authenticate users, transparently, based on their domain authentication, and automatically forward these credentials to the Terminal Server, depending on the network security configuration and policy. Using this approach, PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView eliminates user frustration commonly associated with repeated log-ins. PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView is fully integrated with Microsoft’s Active Directory, providing support for single sign-on to Windows Terminal Server applications.

PowerTerm WebConnect Server

The PowerTerm WebConnect Server runs on Windows or Linux as a native application, is highly scalable, tested, and proven to support thousands of concurrent users. The server supports two modes of communication: Gateway Mode and Direct Mode. The difference between the two is how the client communicates with the Terminal Server after the client has logged on. In Direct Mode, the client communicates directly with the Terminal Server, and



not through the PowerTerm WebConnect Server. In Gateway Mode, the communication is routed through the PowerTerm WebConnect Server to the Terminal Server.

Access Modes: Gateway & Direct

PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView clients maintain a constant connection to the PowerTerm WebConnect Server (functioning either as a ‘Gateway’ or in ‘Direct mode’) to download configurations and scripts, and to enable real-time administrative control. Moreover, a PowerTerm WebConnect Server can run some sessions in Direct Mode and others in Gateway Mode. This allows the administrator to achieve optimal performance and scalability while maintaining system security.

There are several advantages to Gateway access as a method: it enables the traffic to the server system to take advantage of the security features, in particular SSL encryption of all traffic, and it avoids the need for a Terminal Server’s IP address to be visible beyond the firewall. It also provides an enhanced Session Reconnect feature which is useful for remote access over “bad” lines and is particularly useful for mobile and remote users, enabling interrupted sessions to continue from the point of interruption.

Direct mode places a reduced load on the PowerTerm WebConnect Server, therefore offering maximum performance and scalability. Also, the clients are able to operate with published Terminal Server applications even if they lose connection to the PowerTerm WebConnect Server. As a result, there is no single point of failure to the access architecture.

PowerTerm WebConnect Administrative Tool

The PowerTerm WebConnect Administration Tool provides centralized administration of PowerTerm WebConnect users. The tool can be used to add and configure users, groups and connections, all from one central location. It permits real-time monitoring for session information, including time, location, and duration of sessions and reporting of all connections into the Terminal Servers. Administrators can also manage sessions and centrally control access permissions. Moreover, the IT department can centrally terminate any session of any user, giving IT complete control over usage, access and configuration.



Technical Highlights Enterprise-Class Scalability

The PowerTerm WebConnect Server is designed for extreme high-scalability and throughput. A single PowerTerm WebConnect Server can support thousands of concurrent user sessions (actual number of sessions may vary based on server and network hardware and configuration).

Load test results proved PowerTerm WebConnect Server’s ability to handle more than 3,000 thousand concurrent user sessions on a Windows 2000 Server with dual 2.4Ghz Pentium 4 CPUs and 2GB RAM.

Failover

PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView supports multiple backup servers. In the event that a primary WebConnect Server is shut down, or fails, any number of backup servers will take over in its place automatically. Designed to avoid loss of services, this feature ensures that users will have robust uptime to maintain user productivity. A failover server license is required to use the failover mechanism, but there is no need for additional client licenses since all the servers participating in the system utilize the same client license pool.

Session Reconnect

Particularly useful for mobile and remote users, Session Reconnect automatically resumes interrupted user-sessions when PowerTerm WebConnect is running in Gateway Mode. Session Reconnect enables interrupted sessions to continue from the exact point of interruption, so there is no loss of work or data, and saving the user from repeating the laborious process of logging in and data re-entry.

Thin Clients

Ericom's PowerTerm WebConnect is installed on thin clients supplied by many of the largest thin client manufacturers, including Wyse, VXL and many others.

PowerTerm WebConnect RemoteView for Thin Clients features a small footprint, support for Windows XPe, Windows CE, and Linux-based Thin Clients, and support for Windows 2000/2003/2003 x64 Terminal Servers.
