Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends,

It is hard to believe that last year (2016-17) marked my 6th year as Head of this incredibly special institution. I believe in leading by serving, and I found that time truly flies when one embraces and engages the community you serve. As we close our 69th year of educating students to ‘learn not for school but for life’ I am honored to continue the beloved traditions and serve Powhatan with the same mission and values that have sustained us for nearly 70 years.

I feel proud of our community daily—proud of our faculty and the curriculum they have built, proud of our Board of Trustees for the work they do selflessly for Powhatan, and especially...proud of our students’ accomplishments. You may have noticed that my pride is unmistakably visible on Graduation Day.

The Class of 2017 was a group of full vigor, creativity, academic prowess, and service orientation—all merits that embody the Powhatan Spirit. Our younger students looked up to this class with demonstrable respect and admiration. As an example, this was especially apparent on Field Day when one of our 8th graders, Bailey Vogt, dazzled the community with high jump after high jump. It seemed like a proverbial ‘cast of thousands’ chanted his name to support their friend. Really...how lucky are we to be a part of this vibrant community?

And, last Fall I had the opportunity to spend time with some exceptional people who are part of the Powhatan family from long ago. We held a reunion for graduates of the Blue Ridge Country Day School—the beginning of the Powhatan we know today. More than 40 people attended, some coming from as far away as Florida and Texas, to reminisce and reconnect with old friends. A highlight of the evening was hearing them share stories in the Little Red Schoolhouse Antiques store in Millwood—the original site of our school!

I hope that you will enjoy the photos and stories from this heartwarming evening on Page 6, and further...increasingly appreciate being a part of a school community where life-long connections run so deep.

Warm wishes to all,

Sue Scarborough

September 24, 2016 was a memorable night for a special group of Powhatan alumni and the staff who organized it! Over 40 attendees from the very beginnings of Powhatan, the Blue Ridge Country Day School, came together to take a walk down memory lane, sharing their history and memories along the way.

We began our evening with a tour of current-day Powhatan, as some of our guests had not visited the new buildings in some time. Next, we hopped on a school bus and headed over to the place where it all began, the Little Red Schoolhouse. The old walls brought out many memories that were shared, including a recollection of a tack being placed on the chair of one of the teachers and playing outside in what was known as “Cowpie Stadium” – as the play area was essentially a farm shared with some cows!

Before departing for dinner, we could not resist taking a photo of the group on the steps of the schoolhouse, just like they did over 60 years ago. We shared even more stories, memorabilia and photographs over dinner, and Head of School Sue Scarborough had some questions for the group from our current 3rd graders! They wanted to know, “How did you get to school? Did you walk, drive, or ride a horse?” “Did you have posts and rails?” (the answer is yes) “Did you have Chromebooks?”

Much fun and fellowship was shared that evening, and we intend to organize more reunions. Let us know your interest! Most importantly, we recognize that without the Blue Ridge Country Day School and its students, mission and traditions, we would not be the Powhatan School we are today. For that, we are very grateful.

Celebrating the Roots of Powhatan School with a Blue Ridge Country Day Reunion!

Alumni Stories “In 1957 the Blue Ridge Country Day School moved from the Little Red School House and became Powhatan

School. This change occurred between my 6th and 7th Form. Probably in 5th Form (possibly 6th) there was a Fire

Drill, where the entire school filed into the Little Red School House Main Room. Now I wonder why the drill meeting

point was within a theoretically burning structure, but that never crossed my 5th Form mind. To provide a diversion

and allow a post-drill inspection, a fire truck had come from Berryville (this is before Boyce had a VFD). Suddenly

someone (not me, although I wish I could claim credit) looked out an open window (no air conditioning in those days)

and screamed “There’s a Fire Truck!; it’s a FIRE!” and jumped out of the window. It took awhile before Headmaster

Bob Evans could restore order. Perhaps someone remembers who the perpetrator was – I have the usual list of

troublemakers (and suspect they know who they are), but hesitate giving blame (or credit) falsely.”

– Thom Flory, Class of 1959

Alumni Stories “When I attended the Blue Ridge Country Day School,

there were not very many students, especially in the upper

grades. (During my 7th grade year the roster included only

Maisie Wilson and me.) As a result we were always at a

disadvantage when we played other schools in sports. For

one, we never really had enough students to field a proper

team and had to fill positions with younger students, and

on boys’ teams, with girls. (It must be admitted, in at least

one instance, a member from this category was far better

than any of the boys.)

After several years of establishing our ineptitude, a

parent—I can’t remember who it might have been—perhaps

as an incentive, or perhaps sympathy, or maybe sensing

a safe bet—promised to take the entire school to see the

Washington Senators play, if ever we won a baseball game.

For a time things went on as usual, but one spring

something amazing happened. Some of you may recall

that some sports took place in the Burwell’s field adjacent

to the school. This was not always an ideal venue. In the

case of basketball, for example, there was a basket, only

one, I think, set up on top of a hill, and many dribbles would

carom upwards at an oblique angle, as if yearning for

the bottom. A bit beyond the hill was the playing field for

football or baseball, depending on the season. This was

bumpy, and we had to share it with the Burwell cows.

Ordinarily when we played baseball in the spring, it was

really softball, but for games against other schools we

switched to baseball proper.

Our opponent for the fateful game was Boyce Elementary,

historically our most fearsome rival. Our contests had

always featured enormously one-sided scores.

Back to the game. For some unfathomable reason it

stayed close, inning after inning. Boyce was slightly ahead

up to the final one. Blue Ridge put a couple of runners on

base. Alas, I don’t recall who was batting, but he (or she)

lifted a lazy fly to the outfield. Too bad, we thought, as the

center fielder drifted over to make a game-ending catch.

I interrupt here to remind that the playing fields were

shared with the Burwell cows, not always, but on occasion.

And there was clear evidence that cows had been there in

the very recent past.

You can guess what’s coming. After he slid in a particularly

massive and gooey cow pie and lost his balance, so

horrified and focused only on his plight was the outfielder—

he really was a mess—that all the runners maneuvered the

bases for an historic win.

And soon after, there was a bus ride to Washington”

Phillip Coffey, Associate Trustee and past parent, was instrumental during the rebuilding of Powhatan School after the devastating fire in 1988. Colleagues recall his kindness, generosity and positive spirit. Because of his love and deep commitment to our school, hundreds of students are enjoying the benefits of a Powhatan education today. He served on the Powhatan Board of Associate Trustees until his death on April 11, 2017.

Anne Wheeler, Powhatan’s amazing librarian for 31 years, passed away on August 14, 2017. Mrs. Wheeler was a fixture in our library for over 3 decades, instilling a love of reading and of

literature in hundreds of Powhatan students. She was instrumental in starting the Visiting Author Program that many generations of students have enjoyed. Her love of Powhatan and its children was unparalleled.

Dino Morgoglione, husband of former faculty member Carolyn Morgoglione and proud papa to Terri ‘70 and Greg ‘71 Morgoglione passed away on September 23, 2017. Dino was a visionary and instrumental in the growth of youth soccer in the Shenandoah Valley. He helped many Powhatan students sharpen their soccer skills along the way.

Class of 2017

This year, The Niemann Service Award goes to a student who has a passion for giving back to others, both young and old. She has been a camp counselor for Powhatan, both in Mrs. Rodway’s art classes and with the youngest Pre-K and Kindergarteners. She spent hours working for a food bank and donating money to refugee charities in Israel as well as tutoring students in Hebrew at her synagogue. This year, she spent many hours after school constructing (with the help of Mr. Royston) a free library box for the Winchester Literacy Volunteers so that people who cannot get library cards can still borrow a book. The 2017 Niemann Service Award goes to Bridget Conlon.

The Head’s Award is given by Sue Scarborough with the advice of the faculty to those students who appear special in our eyes for a specific reason. This year, two Head’s awards will be given.

The first Head’s Award goes to a student who tries her best each day to live by our school values as she interacts with her teachers and classmates. She is willing to help others, treats everyone with respect, and positively tackles any task that she encounters. In the word of one of her teachers, “this student has the ability not only rise to the top but to motivate others to work alongside her, thus rising them to the top with her”. Martina Bouder is receiving the first Head’s Award.

The second Head’s Award goes to a student who also embodies our mission and school pillars. She always seeks to improve herself, listens to others by giving them her full attention, and is honest (even in the most challenging situations). She thinks carefully about her decisions and how they will affect others and is quick to volunteer where she is needed. A quiet yet confident leader, she empathizes with others. Emma Coutts is receiving the second Head’s Award.

This year’s winner of the Nancy Talley Writing Prize truly enjoys expressing herself through the written word. Her body of written pieces throughout her years in the Upper School is impressive and her teachers are always inspired by what she has to say and how she expresses herself. The judges for this year’s prize had this to say about her essay: “This essay is genuinely funny at times, very inventive, and well-structured from beginning to end. This student took a broad essay prompt and made it uniquely her own. Congratulations to Alaina Pastore, this year’s Nancy Talley Writing Prize Winner!

This year’s Gilpin Personal Achievement Award goes to a student who, in the opinion of the faculty, has shown great personal achievement while at Powhatan.

The faculty has watched this student grow in confidence over her years at Powhatan. She has opened her heart to trying new ideas and taking risks, which has eventually led her to be a behind the scenes leader for many class activities and an open minded individual to all the possibilities of any situation. Her love for the Arts is palpable and contagious and she has earned the admiration and respect of her teachers and classmates. The Gilpin Personal Achievement Award goes to Mia Dansie.

This year, because of the diligent, focused and goal oriented work of two students over their sixth, seventh and eighth grade years, we have a tie for the Associate Trustees’ Award for Academic Excellence. Both of these young people excel in many areas, but continue to put their academics first, as evidenced by their consistent high achievement and drive toward excellence. The Associate Trustee Awards for Academic Excellence goes to Ben Thompson and Bailey Vogt.

This year’s recipient of the Mahaney Memorial Cup is a well-rounded student and leader in his class. But what distinguishes him for this award is his constant and steadfast integrity in all situations, whether he is kicking a ball on the playing field, helping with a bake sale or taking a test in a classroom. His interactions with others are thoughtful and coupled with civilty because he sees the good in everyone. Because he is a loyal friend, teammate and scholar, he has earned the respect and admiration of the faculty and his classmates. The Mahaney Memorial Cup is awarded this year to Bailey Vogt.

Ethan BakerEthan is creative in so many areas! Whether sketching, writing creatively, making videos or playing the piano, his mind is always thinking of how an idea can come to life. Most recently, Ethan showcased his affinities during his Chapel Talk about developing his own YouTube Channel. He works

hard in all subject areas, but English and Science are his favorite subjects. Ethan’s teachers describe his work ethic as efficient, diligent and thorough – while always being curious. During his years at Powhatan, Ethan played soccer all three years in the Upper School and wowed us as Mr. Hannagan in Annie and Oberon and Theseus in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Beyond the walls of Powhatan, he has taken piano lessons for seven years at Shepherd University and performed in many recitals there. For community service, Ethan helps at a nursing home and volunteers at his church by playing the piano during the children’s part of the service. Ethan’s next step will be a great one as he moves on to Clarke County High School next year. He is ready for high school and will enrich his next community in many ways.

Abby BalesPositive, upbeat and always smiling, Abby is ready to take on the world! Her zest and energy for life is contagious for us all, but her personal passion is volleyball. In addition to playing on a sports team every season in the Upper School, Abby also plays on the Blue Ridge Volleyball Association

travel team. A solid athlete and strong team mate, she will be greatly missed next year by her coaches and the Athletic Department. However, Abby’s strengths go far beyond the playing fields. Her teachers describe her as a steady and thoughtful learner and reliable group mate who always does her fair share. She has written some lovely poetry in English class and her favorite subject is history. During her time off campus, Abby volunteers at the Highland food pantry. She has also helped at many Powhatan events since her arrival in fifth grade. As Abby heads off to Handley High School next year, we send along with her all our wishes for the success for which we know she is capable!

Izzy BoninIzzy is a delightful student who works very hard and puts forth her best effort each day at Powhatan. She has embraced her years in the Upper School by playing field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse with enthusiasm and commitment along with singing in the chorus and being a quiet yet respectful friend to her classmates. A lovely writer, her work reveals her inner-expressive side, creativity and sense of humor. We all enjoyed her stunning Chapel Talk about her family trip to China and her love of travel. And Mrs. Hobbs will never forget Izzy’s 7th grade essay about her love of cleaning and tidying – she was ready to take her home and put her to work! During her free time, Izzy loves to cook (I hear her chocolate buttercream cake is to die for!), play tennis and board games. She also helps to take care of three dogs and five cats – no wonder she likes to clean – she gets lots of practice!! Next year, Izzy is headed to Wakefield School where we know she will continue to blossom and shine. Way to go Izzy!!

Martina BouderWe know that Martina will be running a corporation someday – she is always on the ball – a real thinker and doer! However, she never achieves her goals at the expense of another person’s feelings – she shows empathy for all. One of this year’s Rail Captains, Martina has played sports all three seasons in the Upper School – volleyball, basketball, and lacrosse. She participated in Upper School Student Council and is a member of the Creative Writing Club where she contributes to the Powhatan Voices editorial team. Outside of Powhatan, Martina has a brown belt in Kenpo Karate and writes stories collaboratively with one of her classmates. Her real passion, though, is playing on her travel volleyball team which she has done for two years. Get ready Handley – you are getting a great volleyball player! Martina has been a CIT at Powhatan’s Summer Camp and has attended Blue Ridge Environmental Governor’s School where she has developed an interest in marine biology. Martina is ready to soar, and we can’t wait to see where she will land!!

Hayden BurkeOn a Saturday or Sunday afternoon when the weather is warm, where will you find Hayden? At second base on the baseball field! Hayden is an avid and competitive baseball player, despite the fact that Powhatan does not have a baseball team. He started playing little league baseball at age four

Page 19: Powhatan IMPACT Report...September 24, 2016 was a memorable night for a special group of Powhatan alumni and the staff who organized it! Over 40 attendees from the very beginnings

19

and has never looked back. At age eight, Hayden was the State MVP for All-Star baseball, and in 2014, he participated in the Cal Ripken World Series. And which team is his favorite pro baseball team – the New York Yankees!! But baseball is only one side of Hayden. He is a serious student, eloquent writer, and a friend to his classmates. During his Upper School years, he played soccer and basketball in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades, participated in Student Council and served as a Rail captain in fifth grade. Hayden made us laugh as Daddy Warbucks in Annie and see his serious acting side as Lysander and Starvling in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. And in his spare time, he volunteers at church and raises money for his baseball team. Millbrook High School is getting one of our best next year!

Bridget ConlonA blend of her own style and intelligence, Bridget is a leader in her class. Arriving in sixth grade, she quickly won the admiration of her classmates and embraced Powhatan as if she had started in kindergarten. An advocate for social justice, Bridget uses her poetry and essays to promote civil

rights and acceptance of others. Devoted to her faith, she recently completed her bat mitzvah by reading an entire passage of ancient Hebrew text from the Torah (which went well beyond the Rabbi’s expectations)! But would we expect anything less from Bridget? Here at Powhatan, Bridget’s days are filled with being a Post Captain, volleyball, lacrosse, Student Council, Mathcounts, participating on the winning STEM team at the Foxcroft competition, and playing Annie in Annie. Beyond our campus, she plays travel volleyball, is building a free library box for the Winchester Literacy Foundation, and enjoys reading and writing. And here is a fun fact about Bridget – while living in Hawaii, she took hula dancing lessons! Being a Founders Scholar at Highland will be her next step – but we know that the sky is the limit for Bridget!

Emma CouttsEmma has a smile that would brighten the darkest night! Helpful and positive to all those she encounters, Emma is an important presence in her class. During her Upper School years, Emma played field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades along with

competing with the cross country team for two years. A formidable competitor on the Mathcounts and STEM teams, Emma used her talents in these areas to support her team mates and win recognition for both teams and Powhatan during competition this year. But math and science are not her only interests because if given

some free time, Emma loves to read and write. Taking mission trips with her church and learning karate round out Emma’s days after homework and Powhatan. Emma’s teachers feel she models Powhatan’s pillars and mission, and we know she will continue to heed those lessons as she heads to Clarke County High School next year!

Mia DansieInspired by the books that she reads, Mia is extremely creative in so many areas – reading, writing, and the arts! We all saw a great example of Mia’s innovative side when she recently choreographed and taught the eighth grade dancers for Grandparents Day. Mia has been quite active in the Upper School – playing volleyball and lacrosse, participating in the dance program, being Vice President of Student Council, and joining the Creative Writing Club. During her own time, Mia enjoys playing the piano, dancing, and taking voice lessons with Ms. Davis. She also spent a month at the Arena Stage Performing Arts Camp in Washington, DC. To help others, Mia was a counselor at Powhatan’s summer camp, assisted with Winter Tuesdays, and gathered holiday items for homeless people. And Mr. Legge will really miss your baking creations!! Mia, your teachers and I have watched you grow and blossom so much over the last few years and now we know you are ready to take on the world! James Wood High School get ready – Mia is on the way!!

Ben DilzerHumble and strong, Ben is a calm presence in his class. We all enjoyed his dry sense of humor when he presented his Chapel Talk about Monty Python and “always looking on the bright side of life”, which Ben does in his interactions with others – he is a loyal friend to all his classmates. Soccer has been Ben’s sports passion at Powhatan, but he also played some basketball and participated on the cross-country team. He has shown us his leadership skills by getting elected as Student Council President this year and helping Powhatan with our Rummage Sale. Beyond the school day, Ben has been a Boy Scout since first grade and currently holds a rank of first class with aspirations for attaining Eagle Scout. He plays the piano and has taken violin lessons for three years. To help his community, Ben has been a Powhatan Camp Counselor, worked at the Millwood Food Bank, and is a member of St. Bridgette’s of Ireland Catholic Church. Clearly, he is a well-rounded young man! So it is off to Clarke County High School next year where we are sure we will continue to hear great things about Ben!

Eli DunphyAn active and involved member of our community since kindergarten, Eli shines in athletics. He participated on the soccer and lacrosse teams during his sixth, seventh, and eighth grade years and played basketball in sixth as well. Eli’s coaches report that he is a dedicated and hard worker,

always willing to help a team mate or younger student. Beyond Powhatan’s courts and fields, Eli is an avid cyclist, recently biking over six hundred miles for a charity event. Additionally, he competed for and won a spot on the National Shooting Team for boys his age in Ireland, which required many practice hours and focus on his part. What really makes Eli a very special member of our community is his kindness to others. He often stays after school to help a teacher and has been found helping our grounds crew with numerous tasks. He is welcoming to new students and is a friend to younger students on the playground. We will all (especially the Head of School!) miss his outgoing smile and warm handshake. Georgetown Prep will be lucky to have Eli next year!

Mason EllisSince her arrival in second grade, Mason has shown us a thirst for knowledge and a quest to push herself ever forward. In other words, Mason is not a passenger, she is certainly a driver when tackling any task. Mason adores riding and takes every opportunity that she can to be on a horse.

Owning her own horse “Imagine That”, Mason has been riding for eleven years – dressage, jumping, and cross country, and she shared her passion eloquently with her Chapel Talk about Pony Club. Mason enjoys other sports as well, including volleyball and lacrosse. She showed us her acting skills by portraying Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and one of the orphans in Annie. To help her community, Mason has worked at the foodbank in Millwood and volunteered at various horse shows. Next year, Mason will be heading to Clarke County High School where she will wow her teachers with her boundless energy and her go-getter attitude.

Lily EnglandLily’s teachers use words such as responsible, reliable, and an excellent student to describe her work ethic at Powhatan each day – with perfect attendance for all of her years at Powhatan!! A team player both in athletics and academics, Lily works collaboratively with others and

simultaneously puts her best effort into all that she does. During her years in the Upper School, she played field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades, with lacrosse being her favorite sport. To nurture her creative side, she has taken ballet, pointe, tap and jazz at Vostrikov Academy since first grade and Suzuki violin since she was four years old. She is also a member of the Shenandoah Valley Youth and Chamber Orchestra. In her free time, Lily is a referee for BRYSA soccer league and volunteers at Braddock Street United Methodist Church which she attends regularly. Lily heads to John Handley High School next year, and we can’t wait to hear what her next endeavors will be!

Cullen HorowiczCullen and sports are the same word and at Powhatan, even though we don’t have baseball, swim, or football teams, Cullen managed to avidly play all three sports outside of school AND participate in Powhatan’s basketball and lacrosse programs. A strong Post captain, he gave his all to lead his group in the friendly competitions throughout the year, and in the classroom, he was motivated and responsible – always prepared for class with his assignments completed well and on time. In Cullen’s sports life beyond Powhatan, he has participated at both the local and national level in swimming, basketball, football, and baseball. For two years in a row, he received the Mark Aaron Johnston Football Player award of “Outstanding Character and Effort”. Cullen’s football team won the National Title in 2015 which led Cullen and his team to be recognized on the Senate floor at the Capitol Building in Annapolis, Maryland, and most recently, Cullen played at the national level in the elite baseball Triple Crown Tournaments. Next year, Cullen will head off to Jefferson High School where we are sure he will continue his sports accomplishments.

Leo HowerddAn assiduous student, Leo is an important member of this year’s eighth grade class. Always ready to laugh with a friend, he is known for his keen sense of humor and his ability to make those around him feel upbeat and happy. Leo has spent his sports time in the Upper School playing soccer and basketball, with soccer being his favorite sport. That is evidenced by his participation on the Winchester United Travel Soccer team beyond his school day at Powhatan. Additionally, Leo has taken Karate for three years. For community service, Leo has helped with set up for the New Family Picnic and been an Upper School helper for Winter Tuesdays. And in his spare time, he heads for the Sportsplex to (guess what?) – play soccer! Next year, Leo

21

will be heading to John Handley High School, and we send along with him all our wishes for the success of which we know he is capable!!

Mia IngramLeading by quiet enthusiasm and example, this year’s eighth grade class has been positively influenced by Mia. Teachers use words like “unfailingly polite and responsible” to describe Mia’s day-to-day attitude toward her classmates, teachers, and classwork. And although Mia

may seem quiet, her mind is not. She is always thinking and working to solve any type of problem that she encounters. During her time in the Upper School, Mia played field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Her passion is dance, and for nine years, she has taken jazz, hip hop, ballet and tap dancing. Additionally, Mia has played the viola with the Shenandoah Valley Youth and Chamber Orchestra for three years. Mrs. Bryant fondly recalls how Mia has been a mentor to the younger string students at practices. In addition to serving on Student Council, Mia volunteers at Girls on the Run Races, Healthy Families in Winchester, and Powhatan’s summer camp. Mia will be heading to Mercersburg Academy next year where we know she will continue to shine.

Annie MartindaleProfoundly creative, Annie sets the bar high for creative expression in eighth grade. With her favorite class being art, she enjoys drawing and sculpting both at school and in her free time. But Annie is far from being one dimensional! During her time in the Upper School, she played volleyball, basketball, and

lacrosse for sixth, seventh, and eighth grades with her favorite sport being volleyball. She has also achieved a purple belt in American Kempo Karate where she has quickly moved up from white belt to yellow belt to orange belt and now purple belt - all since January 2016! Additionally, she participates in the Origami Club at school. Annie enjoys giving back to the community by volunteering at the Barns of Rose Hill and being an Upper School helper for Winter Tuesdays. Looking forward, Annie is very interested in taking classes in art, photography, and graphic design. Clarke County High School will be her next step, and we know they are getting a wonderful and creative addition to their school.

Bianca McNeelyA student who speaks up for what she feels is right and fair, Bianca is a truthful friend to her classmates. When asked what she will miss most about her Powhatan experience, Bianca confidently answered “my teachers”. And I know her teachers will miss Bianca’s keen mind and open-minded thinking! During her time in the Upper School, Bianca played volleyball, basketball, and lacrosse for sixth, seventh, and eighth grades with volleyball as her favorite sport. She also participated in Student Council for seventh and eighth grades. She was a strong stage presence this year as Theseus in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and she directed all the choreography for the play. Always willing to help, whether it is on the bus or creating a video to honor a teacher, Bianca has received several Powhatan Blues for taking the extra step to assume additional responsibility whenever needed. She is one of those unique individuals who can be an up-front leader and also lead behind the scenes. In either role, she is able to do a great job. Her next step – Foxcroft – and who knows all the possibilities!!

Wynn MorrisAlthough arriving in fourth grade, it is as if Wynn has always been a part of this class. A voracious reader and expressive writer, he is able to communicate in witty and clever ways that surpass his age and experience. Wynn has been a formidable and strong competitor on the court and fields. He played soccer, basketball, and lacrosse all three years in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades and competed on the cross-country team for seventh and eighth grades. Soccer and lacrosse get his vote for favorite sports. This year, Wynn served as the Speaker for Student Council and helped with Powhatan’s summer camp. Beyond Powhatan’s campus, Wynn volunteered for Art at the Mill and played travel soccer for six years. Outgoing and fun to be around, we will all miss the spark that Wynn brings to school each day. As he heads off to Clarke County High School, we wish him all the best and know that he will continue to be a positive influence and leader in his class.

Ryan MuellerNot a day goes by that Ryan does not ask the question “What if….”. He loves to ponder BIG ideas and guides us all to think about and discuss all areas of science and history. Over the years, Ryan has truly enjoyed all the scientists who have visited Powhatan – from the man who studied tornadoes to

Page 22: Powhatan IMPACT Report...September 24, 2016 was a memorable night for a special group of Powhatan alumni and the staff who organized it! Over 40 attendees from the very beginnings

22

astronaut Mark Kelly, to most recently, a Powhatan alum who is studying theoretical physics at Harvard – Ryan always had a question or two for each – a perspective that no one else had thought of. Ryan led the Posts as a co-captain this year, and he participated in soccer and basketball in the Upper School. He has also participated in tennis tournaments, and he hopes to go out for the tennis team when he gets to high school. Ryan eloquently played Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream but he also thoroughly enjoyed working the light booth for the play. Next year, Ryan will head to John Handley High School where there are more BIG ideas to ponder – who knows what answers he will discover!

Alaina PastoreQuiet and original, Alaina is a strong presence in her class. Along with her academic work, she played field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse for sixth, seventh and eighth grades with field hockey being her favorite sport. Her coaches describe her as self-motivated, disciplined and

able to work purposefully without direct supervision, all hallmarks of the mature young student athlete that she is. Always willing to lend a hand to others, Alaina’s good nature and positive attitude make her a true pleasure to be around. Alaina’s favorite subject is history where she is an ace reader and secure analyst but she has a strong work ethic in all academic subjects. Her volunteer commitments have been to help with events at The Barns of Rose Hill and be an Upper School helper with Winter Tuesdays. Alaina heads off for Clarke County High School next year where the sky will be her limit!

Emma PellEmma shines on so many levels! First, an accomplished equestrian, she was ranked in the top twenty pony riders in the country. Winning multiple awards including Best Pony Rider for the Mid-Atlantic Region, Small and Medium Pony Champion in Maryland and Virginia, and qualifying for the Pony

Equestrian Finals for Maryland and Virginia are just a few of her accomplishments. Most recently, she qualified and hopes to be selected for a junior team that will represent the United States at an International Competition this summer in New York. Second, Emma played field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse for all three seasons in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Third, Emma always kept up with her academics by working ahead and keeping up with assignments – no easy feat with all she does beyond the classroom each day! Finally, Emma shares her love of riding with younger students by helping with summer riding camps. Her knowledge and experience help new

riders bloom. Emma is off to Foxcroft next year – and perhaps down the road – a veterinarian! Whatever path she rides, we know it will be successful.

Sophia PettlerArriving in seventh grade, Sophia took on the challenges of moving to a new school with grace and dedication. Consequently, we have all enjoyed watching her develop into a strong and confident student. Sophia jumped right into our sports program, playing field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse in seventh and eighth grades. We will never forget her winning smile as she made many baskets for her team – the fans loved her enthusiasm and joy for the game and it showed her calm, poised and unflustered attitude under pressure – intangible skills that have great value and will serve her well in life! She was also a class representative to Student Council. Sophia has danced jazz for four years and has played on the Winchester United Travel Soccer team. In her free time, she helped at Powhatan’s camp and enjoys hiking. Next year, Sophia heads off to James Wood High School. We know she has just begun to blossom – so who knows where this next phase of her education will take her!!

Bell RowanBell is very talented in all areas of our program. Her teachers know she is a hard worker, committed to her studies. When Bell is not working hard in class, you can find her on the playing field. She played field hockey and lacrosse in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades where Coach Nelson commended her for her competitive spirit and the ability to calmly handle adversity. Additionally, she played lacrosse on a travel team called 3D Lacrosse. Bell enjoys skiing and was on a local ski team for three years. Bell’s picture would not be complete without highlighting her talents in music and drama: beginning with her invitation to attend Interlochen summer camp for three years. She rocked as Miss Hannagan in Annie and brought Hermia to life in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. We will all never forget her Chapel Talk about her family’s journey through her dad’s illness and the beautiful song she sang at the end. Bell is heading off to Holderness School next year where she will put her heart and soul into every challenge she meets – just as she has done at Powhatan!

Ben ThompsonDemonstrating a responsible, dedicated, and reliable work ethic, Ben is an excellent student in all subject areas, but his favorites are math and science. Ben started participating in Mathcounts in fifth grade, carrying on as team captain and member of two regional Powhatan first place teams which

went on to compete at the State level. He also won first place individual winner at Regionals this year. A competitor in the Virginia Math League, Ben was first in his class for 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. For three years, he was the school’s Geography Bee winner and participated in the school’s Spelling Bee for four years – this year earning the runner-up position. Ben played soccer, basketball, and lacrosse in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades and also served on Student Council. Beyond Powhatan, he has played Clarke County Little League baseball and basketball since kindergarten, additionally sharing his love for these sports as a coach and umpire. In what little spare time he has, Ben does service work through Grace Episcopal Church. Get ready Clarke County High School! Ben is coming to make a difference!!

Rose UranWith a positive attitude and love for life, Rose is a sought-after friend in her class. When Rose arrived at the beginning of sixth grade, she was not a new student for long as she quickly became a joyful member of her class – a testament to Rose’s outgoing personality and ability to get along

with others. Rose’s teachers report that she puts forth effort when she encounters challenges and perseveres to always do her best. As she has matured over the last three years, we have watched her abilities blossom in many positive ways! Beyond the walls of the classroom, Rose enjoyed playing volleyball, basketball, and lacrosse in Upper School. She volunteers at the Millwood Food Pantry and is a teacher helper at her Hebrew School. She also took piano lessons for four years. The faculty will miss Rose’s unique characteristic of being fun-loving or serious – depending on what the situation calls for at the moment. We send her off to Foxcroft next year with all our best wishes and hopes for every success.

Bailey VogtThere simply is no stopping Bailey. Whether running down the soccer field, preparing for a challenging test, or mowing his grandparents’ lawn, he always gives his best. As a Rail captain this year, he inspired his group to victory, yet did so with integrity and thought for others’ achievements – ever a team player. We will never forget his effort at the high jump on Field Day. We all cheered for him as he jumped higher and higher and higher, coming close to setting a record for the school! Socially, Bailey is a friend to all and a person you can count on. Academically, he works extremely hard to continually better himself in all areas of the curriculum. Beyond Powhatan, Bailey has played soccer in Loudoun County since he was four years old. Most recently, he made the Olympic Development Program for Virginia and will travel right after graduation to New Jersey for the Region 1 ODP tournament. Next year, Bailey heads off to Woodgrove High School where he will add so much to their school – that is – if they can keep up with him!

Molly YoungAlthough Molly is last alphabetically in her class, her achievements put her much farther toward the head of this eighth grade group. Since kindergarten, Molly has grown into a strong reader and writer – and an extremely able student. Hard working and dependable, she is comfortable working alone or with a group – always cool, confident, and easy-going. Molly has played volleyball, basketball, and lacrosse in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. But her true love is swimming, which she has done since fourth grade. Currently, she swims on a team in Winchester that competes against teams from other states. As she moves on to high school, Molly will continue her passion for swimming at that level. Molly also enjoys ballet, which she takes at the SCAA. In her free time, Molly helps with Vacation Bible School at Christ Episcopal Church in Winchester and is an Upper School helper for Winter Tuesdays. Next year, Molly heads off to John Handley High School where she will continue to be a strong contributor to that community, just as she has done at Powhatan.

Congratulations Class of 2017!

1. After graduating from Powhatan in 1960, you had incredible academic success at Concord Academy, Bryn Mawr College, and the University of Pennsylvania. Were there any particular faculty members from Blue Ridge Country Day who inspired your educational journey?

More than fifty years after my graduation, I still remember the names of teachers who introduced me to the wonders of art, language, literature, math, and science. Mr. Oxenham loved English—Shakespeare in particular—and directed my classmates and me in productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Twelfth Night. I played Peter Quince in the former; it was the first and last time I wore an itchy burlap sack on stage. I also recall Mr. Evans, our headmaster and geography teacher, giving me less than half credit for a map I drew of the United States. Experiencing that early failure taught me an important lesson about resilience and perseverance, a lesson that has stayed with me for decades.

When I became the 28th president of Harvard in 2007, Mr. Evans—and some of my other teachers from grade school, high school, college, and graduate school—traveled to Cambridge to attend my installation. I will never forget seeing them in the audience and feeling so grateful for the part each of them played in shaping my earliest experiences in the classroom.

2. All you have accomplished in your career has undoubtedly inspired countless women and girls. We are proud to say that our female students are bright, articulate, and driven. If you had an opportunity to lead an advisory group with some of our upper school students, what guidance would you offer as they go out into the world?

I would encourage them to resist easy answers. For example, to say that there is one—or even a handful—of gender-based leadership styles underestimates and oversimplifies individuals. In my mind, the most successful leaders, be they women or men, adopt approaches that feel authentic to them. They understand their strengths and use their experiences and insights to guide their decision-making. Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King, Jr.—great men who led differently. Jane Addams, Madeleine Albright, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf—great women who did the same.

There are as many ways to lead as there are to live. But when I was named President of Harvard, the press was very keenly focused on my being a woman. At the press conference announcing my appointment, someone asked me about being “the woman President of Harvard,” and I responded, “I’m not the ‘woman President of Harvard.’ I’m the President of Harvard.” I didn’t want to be put in a special box.

Then something I didn’t expect started happening. I started getting mail, a lot of mail, from girls around the world and from their parents, messages about being able to imagine this particular future, about being able to do anything. I realized how important it is that I recognize and embrace the symbolic force of my appointment.

Alumni Spotlight: President Drew Gilpin Faust ‘60, Harvard University

25

I would also encourage young women in the upper school to share their experiences with girls in the lower school. Women look to other women for models that work and for affirmations that their aspirations aren’t too outsized, and girls grow confident when they see women making decisions, owning achievements, and succeeding in leadership positions.

3. In your installation address as Harvard University President, you said:

“A university is not about results in the next quarter; it is not even about who a student has become by graduation. It is about the learning that molds a lifetime, learning that transmits the heritage of millennia, learning that shapes the future.”

Your words reinforce Powhatan School’s motto: “We learn not for school, but for life.” Could you comment on the importance of developing a love of learning?

People often ask me when I first dreamed of becoming president of Harvard, and the truth is that I would never have guessed that I would lead one of the world’s greatest universities. The love of learning I developed at Blue Ridge and Powhatan and elsewhere helped me become more curious about the world and about my place in it, and education has played a remarkable role in my life. It opened doors for me that I never knew existed, made me bolder than I ever thought I could be, and helped me realize that my future is my own. It is an extraordinary gift—and one worth celebrating and preserving.

This research was used to help the company gain a more comprehensive understanding of their competitors and their expansive market opportunity.

In 2013, Powhatan created The Lamp Society to thank and recognize the generous donors whose bequests and planned gifts continue to enhance and expand the mission of Powhatan School that ‘we learn not for school but for life’.

Powhatan’s educational success rests on each of us sustaining its financial success. Every generation, from the beginnings of Blue Ridge Country Day to the Powhatan School of today, has a critical responsibility to help provide the shoulders, the direction and the support for those generations that follow. Planned gifts are a way to secure our organization’s future, expand our programs, extend our mission and reach a greater number of students than ever before.

For more information on joining this esteemed group of supporters, contact Amy Sluss in the Development office. (540) 837-1009 or [email protected]

Why I joined The Lamp Society. My son Benson, ‘16 was very fortunate to have attended Powhatan, and we have always been proud that he is a Powhatan graduate. The excellent education Powhatan provided has enabled him to thrive at Woodberry Forest School, and I expect later in college. Our family has a long history of attendance at Powhatan from its founding, and Benson currently has 5 cousins attending the school. It is heartwarming to see Powhatan succeeding in its endeavors and to be at the forefront of the area’s schools

I was motivated to join The Lamp Society since my financial resources were limited during my son’s attendance at Powhatan. I gave to Powhatan each year, but not as much as I hope to one day. So, I included a bequest to Powhatan for a percentage of my estate. Including Powhatan in my long-term plans was a way to reconcile my ability to give with my desire to give.

Having made my commitment far in advance of when Powhatan may ultimately receive it, I designed it to be flexible but consistent in its core purpose: to make Powhatan a continual part of my philanthropic plans. I knew I was planning well in advance, but I also knew my desire to contribute to Powhatan wasn’t going to change. So why not make those plans now?

By including Powhatan in their estate plans, donors, through gifts of all sizes, can continue to touch the lives of many Powhatan students.

– J. David Wiedemer, Past Parent
