Principal Notes: Dear Students, Parents and Caregivers Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa Wow what a wonderful summer it has been (if you are not a farmer)! It is with great pleasure and excitement that we welcome you to the 2018 School Year - new classes, new subjects, new friends, new learning opportunities and experiences. We extend a special welcome to all of our new students and their families, particularly Year 9 students who are beginning their secondary schooling for the first time but also to the many students from other Year levels who are joining us from other Secondary Schools within and outside of Taranaki. New Staff We are very pleased to be able to welcome four new staff members to our school. Mrs Marian Dingle takes over from Mrs Fitzpatrick teaching Spanish, she is also teaching an Accounting class. Although a New Zealand trained teacher Mrs Dingle’s first language is Spanish, this is the best of both worlds for her students. Mrs Dingle worked in our school during 2017, she has established strong relationships with our students and knows our school well. Mr Cameron Moratti is a Maths teacher joining the Maths Faculty following Mr Stanfords retirement. Mr Moratti spent time on placement at our school during his training and so like Mrs Dingle he knows our school and our students well. Ms Stephanie Julian is a teacher of English and has moved to Spotswood College after having taught at Stratford High School. Ms Julian has an extensive work history prior to teaching and will be able to enhance real life experiences for her students. Miss Marie Hunneyball has taken over from Mr Hill as our Drama Teacher. Miss Hunneyball has come to us from Sacred Heart Girls College. We are looking forward to working with our new staff members and wish them well on their new journey in our school. Powhiri It was a real thrill to have been able to welcome all new students, staff and their whanau to our kura through the Powhiri on the first day of school. Attendance at this very special occasion was huge, it was wonderful to have so much support from our Iwi Hapu and Whanau, thank you all for your support and best wishes for the year. Communication At the Powhiri and certainly through IDP interviews we stress the importance of having strong and effective learning partnerships with parents/whanau and our wider community to support student learning. The focus for this partnership is through communication with your child's whanau teacher in the first instance or any of the key people listed below: Principal Mark Bowden Deputy Principals Daryn Shaw, Martun Knaption Paula Cast, Chris Lapworth Deans Year 9/10 - Mr D Scott Year 11 - Mr J O’Keefe Year 12 - Ms J Stephens Year 13 - Ms J Cooper

Acting Principal Notes

This Academic year has started with a bang! Thanks to all of you for sending your best students to school which has made the start of the year a great one. I offer a warm welcome to all new members of the school community. We have over 150 year 9’s that have started the year and new enrolments happening all the time as new families join our community. Our roll has grown even though the Ministry had expected it to decline. I thank the Deans at Spotswood for working so hard to ensure a smooth transition to new students at our school.

NCEA SUCCESS As we turn our attention to this year, we must reflect on some successes at the end of 2017. Firstly, we are proud of our NCEA results which keep us at or above Decile 5 schools Nationally. Our Maori achievement is also well above national averages for Decile 5 schools. The school will report more on the success of our students at NCEA when the results have been finalised by NZQA.

ATTENDANCE

Good attitudes towards attendance help prevent problems Hello and welcome back to an exciting 2018, and a very special welcome to our new students and their families. I hope all of you had a fantastic break and are ready for a busy year ahead. Here are a few things that are expected of your child while attending Spotswood College. Attendance at Spotswood College is of vital importance. Regular and punctual patterns of attendance are expected of every student. Illness: If your child is too ill to attend school, this will be treated as an authorized absence. The school will expect you to contact them at the start of the day explaining their absence. You may also leave a message on the schools attendance hotline which is cleared every morning. Please leave a clear message stating reason for absence, name of student and year level. If you do not contact the school the Attendance Officer may contact you either through telephone or text message from the school. If your child is absent for 3 days or more you are required to provide the school with a medical certificate. Lateness: It is important that students arrive to school on time. This encourages good timekeeping and lessens any possible classroom disruptions. Poor attendance and persistent lateness undermines children’s education and leads them to falling behind. If your child is going to be late parents are asked to inform the school as soon as possible, or provide your child with a written note explaining their lateness. Students that arrive late to school are to report to the office for a late pass. Your child will be asked to explain why they are late, this is where notifying the school or providing notes for your child is important. Signing Out: If your child needs to sign out of school during the day for an appointment parent/caregivers are to provide their child with a written note or are to telephone the school notifying them of their child’s early departure from school. If the school does not have any notification regarding your child’s early departure, they will not be allowed to leave the school. If your child is returning back to school after their appointment they will need to sign in at the student reception where they will be given a pass to get back into class. It is always best to try and make appointments out of school time so there is less disruption for your child. I know this is not always convenient. The Early Notification System: Making sure our kids are safely at school……………. Spotswood College operate the Early Notification System. If your child has been marked absent period 1 you may receive a text message from the school notifying you that your child is absent from school. You will be asked to reply back with a brief message. This comes back to the Attendance Officer through the school’s computer system. Accurate information is of vital importance. If at any time your contact details have changed please notify the school as soon as possible. For the Early Notification system to work successfully we need accurate information. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any concerns, I am more than happy to help. Kind Regards Jenine Parkinson Attendance Officer

Spotswood College Students attended the New Zealand Age group Beach Volleyball championships at Mount Maunganui. Keegan Joe and David Jeffrey (2017 student), won the U19 men’s title 2-0 over North Harbours Keenan Hodge and Tana Milton. This was a great result, as in 2017 they nar-rowly lost the final, so were able to finally capture the title in 2018. In the woman’s U19 final Spotswood’s Libby Houghton and Hikaru Han lost 0-2 to Tamara Otene and Brittany Alison-Carnie (Auckland). They played good volleyball and were unlucky not to come away with the gold. In the U17 boys section North Harbour again prevailed over Spotswoods, Neme Faga and Aaron Hone (NPBHS), to force the Taranaki pair to a silver medal. In the U15 boys section Spotswood new year 9 students Rylee Houghton and Juraj Krajci gained a bronze medal for Taranaki. Vertical Horizon Peer Support Camp. Thursday 8th February saw 32 Peer Support Leaders (and Ms Cooper) head off to Inglewood to experience all that Vertical Horizon has to offer. I think it is fair to say that every student who went was pushed to their limits in one way or another - physically and mentally. But dare I say it, there was a lot of fun and team-building and character-building along the way. The first morning's activities were centred around getting to know the members of our peer support group. After lunch were the outdoors activities, involving problem-solving, teamwork and communication - from building a bridge, crossing the lake and making a campfire. Then it was time for dinner - a really "special" occasion. The evening was spent watching a film which modeled to us inclusivity and compassion - both essential qualities required for leadership. Day 2 had an early start, followed once more by problem-solving, team activities; raft building, code cracking, tent pitching. This was followed by a hearty brunch, clean up and home sweet home. I do not want to give too much away......suffice to say, some of us were pushed to our limits but Vertical Horizons is a valuable experience, allowing us to go above and beyond what we ever thought possible.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

WOW … we are buzzing here at Spotswood International with twenty one new enrolments to start the 2018 school year. These students from Brazil, China, France, Germany and Japan join our four returning students from 2017.

This first half year we are part of a group of NZ schools hosting students from Pernmabuco, in the north, west region of Brazil. We are fortunate to have five lovely students in our programme Beatriz, Assucena, Karla, Pedro and Matheus. This trip is a huge’ leap of faith’ for these young people and we know they are being supported and cared for as they begin their timetabled classes.

We were very proud of our International students who were part of the haka powhiri welcome to Mr Kawabata, Principal of Hatsukaichi Senior High School. The performance and formal welcome to our school was a very special occasion for us all!

Yesterday twenty International Students took part in the TSSSA Beach Volleyball tournament at Ngamotu Beach … these events are the best possible way to make new friends, have fun and really show our ETU values in action. We also aim to have teams entered in the Sunday night games coming up.

Thank you to all our school whanau – teachers, buddies and Year 12 & 13 friends for helping our students ‘find their way’ in this very new environment …. we can see by the smiles on their faces that Spotswood College is beginning to feel like home!

Vocational Pathways—Te Waka Huarahi National Success After a busy and exciting start to the school year I thought it would be a great time to stop and reflect on some of our most recent success in the department. Over the summer break we were informed of the following results.

Wiki Rewa - New Zealand Certificate in Youth Work - Level 3

Emily-Rose Longstaff - National Certificate in Early Childhood Education - Level 3

Azaria Court , Gaby Cole and Jaxon Madden all received the National Certificate in Recreation and Sport - Aquatics (Swim Education ) Level 3 and SNZ Swim Teacher Award.

A National Certificate gained while still at school is a great achievement and comes on the back of a dedicated, hardworking and reflective approach by the students mentioned. We wish them all the best in their future endeavours and thank them for their outstanding representation of the Spotswood College Vocational Pathways Department. We also had two students gain excellent marks in University papers they sat last year through the University of Canterbury.

Josh Thompson received and A- for his MATH 199 paper - Advancing in Mathematical Sciences

Jonno Clarges received a B+ for his HIST127 paper - American History Awesome work and we are pleased to have been able to support these students in the challenges they set themselves. Upcoming Events in the Vocational Pathways Department March 7
