Intheyear2009PoznanUniversityofTechnology(PUT)iscelebratingits90thanniversary.BeingtheheirsofsuchnobleinstitutionsofhighereducationasHigherStateSchoolofMechanicalEngineering,HigherStateSchoolofMechanicalandElectricalEngineering,orSchoolofEngi-neering,wehavepermanentlywentdowninthehistoryofourcityandregion.

Ourmottois:“thinkingaboutthefu-ture–wedonotforgetthepast”,andthisishowwearetryingtocreatetheimageofPoznanUniversityofTechnologyasauni-versityreferringtotraditionandsimultane-ouslybeingmodern,opentothechangesoccurringaroundus.

DuringthepastninetyyearsPoznanUni-versityoftechnologyhasbecomeapowerfulandtrustworthyuniversity,enjoyingprestigebothintheacademicenvironmentandthecirclesofeconomiclife.Itiscomposedof9facultieseducatingnearly20thousandstudentsstudyingatBachelor,Master,PhDaswellaspostgraduatelevels.Thefacultieshave19rightstoconferthePhDdegreeattechnicalaswellaseconomicsciences,and12rightstoconferthedegreeofassociateprofessor,whichmakesPUTauniversityofatechnicaluniversitystatus.

Untiltheendoftheyear2008,almost75thousandpeoplehavegraduatedfromouruniversity.Ourgraduatesconstituteanimportantgroupofpeoplewithtechnicaled-ucation,andmanyofthemhavecontributedsignificantlytotheeconomicandcivilizationdevelopmentofPoland.Owingtotheknowl-edgeacquiredatouruniversity,thegradu-atesofPoznanUniversityofTechnologyareabletocombinetheorywithpracticeandimplementinnovativewaysofthinkingandactioninlife.

ItwasinDecember2008thatoneofthebiggestconferencesintheworld–TheUnitedNationsCli-mateChangeConferenceCOP14washeldinPoznan.Thescientificinstitutionalandtechnicalinfra-structuregivesPoznantherighttonameitselfacitybasingitsdevel-opmentonknowledge,whichhasbeenrevealedinthesymbolpro-motingthecity.


Thereisapositiveatmospherefeltforculturalactivityandvariousformsofsociallife.Everyonecanchoosesomethingforthemselvesfromtherichofferofcinemas,theaters,museums,galleriesandclubs,restaurantsandpubs.InPoznan,thereareinternationaltheaterfestivalssuchasMal-ta,Masks,OffCinemaortheInternationalYoungAudienceFilmFestival“AleKino”.Thename“alternativetheaterheart”haspermanentlyclungtothecapitalofWielko-polskaregion.Thecityisalsonamed“themusiccapitalofPoland”intouristguide-booksbecauseofboysandmen’schoirsthatareactivehere,TheHenrykWieniaw-skiInternationalViolinCompetitionheldhereevery5years,activeareAgnieszkaDuczmalChamberOrchestra,theGrandTheater,ThePolishDanceTheater.Ac-cordingtotheratinglistpreparedbytheeditorialofficeofPrzekrójweeklyinJune2009,PoznanisthemostfriendlycitytoliveinPoland.

Poznanplacessporthighintherank-ing.Footballismostpopularwiththeresi-dentsofPoznan,andLechFootballClubisknownforthebestandmostdevotedsupporters.ThemarathonrunwhichhasbeenorganizedinPoznanbelongstothebiggestmassracesinEurope.Poznanisoftenchargedwiththeorganizationofprestigioussportingevents,includ-ingonesofEuropeanandworldranking.Thankstotherowingrace-trackonLakeMalta,whichisoneofthebestintheworld,thereareworldrowingandcanoe-ingchampionshipsorganizedinPoznan.In2012PoznanwillbehostingthebestEuropeanfootballersduringtheEuroCup.

Thebeginningsofhighertechnicaleducationdatebacktothe20softhe20thcentury.In1919,duringtheWielkopolskaUprisingthePeople’sLeadingCouncilfoundedHigherStateSchoolofMechani-calEngineering.Itsfirstprincipalwasan

engineer–MrWiktorMaćkowiakandthefirstfewfreshmenstudentsalreadybegantheireducationinSeptember.In1929theSchoolwasrenamedHigherStateSchoolofMechanicalandElectricalEngineeringbecausetwofaculties–MechanicalandElectricalEngineeringbegantofunction.

SincetheSchoolcameintobe-ingPoznanresidentsundertookef-fortstotransformitintoauniversityofatechnicalrank.In1921adocumentwasissuedinTechnicalNewsenti-tled“TheMemorialontheIssueofEstablishingaTechnicalUniversityinPoznan”.Yearsofeffortprovedfruit-fulin1937–theMinistryofEduca-tionformallyapprovedestablishingPoznanUniversityofTechnologyintheacademicyear1940–1941.Un-fortunatelytheoutbreakoftheSec-ondWorldWarbrutallydisturbedthepreparations.

In1945TheStateHigherSchoolofMechanicalandElectricalEngineeringwasreactivatedandrenamedSchoolofEngineeringwith3faculties:TheFacultyofMechanicalEngineering,TheFacultyofElectricalEngineeringandTheFacultyofCivilEngineering.Effortswerestillcon-tinuedtoestablishatechnicalschoolofhighereducationinPoznan.TheOrgani-zationalCommitteeofPoznanUniversityofTechnologywasformed.Itformulatedaproperappealandplansofaction.Scarceindependentacademicstaff,theconditionofroomsdemolishedbythewarandthelackoflaboratoryfacilitiesweredifficultobstaclestoovercome.

In1953theSchoolwasenrichedwithanewbuildinginPiotrowoStreet,whichwasabuildingtohousetheFacultyofCivilEngineering.InthesameyeartheFacultyofAgricultureMechanizationwassetup.Whoeverremembersthosetimesempha-sizesthattheprofessorsandstudentscre-atedaverygoodatmosphereforworkandstudy.Thestudentstookprideinthepos-sibilityofstudyingintheirmothertongue,andjoyfullyworecrimson-darkredcapswithabluerim–thesymboloftheSchool.

TheactivityofPoznanscientificenvi-ronmenttosupporttheestablishmentofatechnicaluniversitysucceededin1955whenthedecisiontotransformTheSchoolofEngineeringintoPoznanUniversityofTechnologywasmadebytheMinisterofHigherEducation.TheUniversitytookovertheinfrastructureoftheSchoolofEngineering–itsfacultiesandinter-facultyunits.In1968anewfacultywassetup–theFacultyofChemicalTechnology.In1970thestructureoftheuniversitywasreformedandInstituteswereintroducedtoreplaceChairs.

Thesubsequentyearsofexistencebroughtaboutexpansionoftheuniversityandenlargementofitseducationaloffer.Thecreationofnewfacultieswasacceler-atedafterthechangeswhichoccurredinthecountryinthe90s.In1997theFacultyofTechnicalPhysicswassetup,in1999theFacultyofArchitecture,in2001TheFacultyofComputingScienceandMan-agement,andin2006theFacultyofElec-tronicsandTelecommunications.

universitybecauseofahighlevelofteach-ing,supremeandhighlyskilledacademicstaff,andthepossibilityoffullrealizationoftheirscientificandnon-scientificinter-estsandafriendlyatmosphere.


RobotSumo–aneventpromotingscienceandeducation

Tremendouspossibilitiesofrealizationoftheirintellectualinter-estsareprovidedtostudentsbyresearchgroups.Atpresentthereareover50ofthemactivewithintheuniversity.Theeventswhichat-tractcrowdsofstudentsbothfromPUTaswellasfromotheracademiccentresdeserveparticularattention.Theyinclude,amongothers,JobFairorganizedbyEngineers’Promo-tionCentrewiththeaimofhelpingyoungpeoplecontactemployersandgetagoodstartatthejobmar-ket.Aninterestingeventpopular-izingscienceistheannualRobotSumocontest,whichhasbeenlongrelatedtotheresearchgroupofAu-tomaticsandRoboticsCybAir.


PUTundergraduateshavebeensuc-cessfulinprestigiousinternationalcom-petitionsforyears.Themostspectacularwereprize-winningplacesintheCSIDC(ComputerSocietyInternationalDesignCompetition).Sincethecompetitionorigi-nated,studentsfromPoznanhavebeenintheveryfinals:thefirstprizewonin2001and2004,secondin2002and2005,thirdin2000.ThebiggestmedialpublicitywasgivenbythevictoriesofInformationTech-nologystudentsintheworldprogrammingcontestImagineCuporganizedeveryyearbytheMicrosoftCompany,andthestudentssucceededduringthefinalsin

ProgrammingContestImagineCupinJapan(2005)

Japan,Korea,FranceandEgypt.Thelat-estsuccessintheImagineCupcontestwaswinningthefirstprizebytheteamfromPoznanwithstudentsfromPUTinSuzanneMubaracContest(theFirstLadyofEgypt).

AlsosuccessfulwerethefinalsoftheworldAeroDesignContest–California2009indesigningandbuildingplanes(eighthplaceintheworld,firstinEurope).


Ourstudentsalsowonthefirstprizeintheinternationalprogrammingcon-testknownasChallenge24inBudapestin2005aswellasGRIDCONTESTinFrance.

Ourstudentssucceedinbothlocalandinternationalarchitecturecontests,theproofofwhichwaswinningthefirstprizeinthecontestHouseofGlassorganizedbytheglassmanufacturerPiklingtonandthejournalArchitectureTodayin2003.

PUTstudentsalsoqualifytothefinalsofotherworldchampionships,e.g.EUContestforYoungScientists–Paris2009.


Itwasintheyears1999/2000thatECTS(EuropeanCreditTransferSystem),whichisthebasisforthestudentexchang-esbetweenthebestuniversitiesinEuropewithintheframeworkofLifelongLearningProgramme–Erasmus(previously:Socra-tes-Erasmus),wasintroducedbytheUni-versity.Intheyears1999–2008over1500studentsofPoznanUniversityofTechnol-ogymadeuseofit.

TheprocessofteachingatPoznanUniversityofTechnologyissupportedbyfinancialinstrumentsfromEuropeanStruc-turalFunds.AspectacularexampleofitistheprojectnamedEraInżyniera(Engi-neer’sEra),withinwhichtwonewspeciali-zationshavebeensetup:aircraftenginesandaircrafttransportation.

“Cantamus”MenChoirofPUTTheFolkDanceGroupofPUTcalled

“Poligrodzianie”,whichpresentsauthenticfolklore,hasbeenpresentinthememo-riesoftheresidentsofPoznanandalmostthroughoutthewholeworldsince1973.Thegrouphasperformedduringnumerousfolkfestivalsandmeetingsofcultureassocia-tions.TheyoungdancersandsingershavebeenhostedbyPopeJohnPaulII,themay-orofNewYorkCityandgaveconcertsforthebenefitofUNESCO.Achievingnumer-oussuccessesbothinPolandandabroad“Poligrodzianie”becameasupremeflagshipoftheuniversity.The“CantamusChoir”,whichishighlyappraisedbyexperts,whoseachievementsincludeseveralhundredcon-certtoursabroad,recordingsfortheradioandtelevisionistheprideoftheuniversity.AlsohighlysuccessfulisthemixedChamberChoir“VolantesSoni”.Itsrepertoireincludessacred,folk,andmodernmusicaswellasGregorianpiecesinnewarrangements.

ThestudentRadio“Afera”

Theuniversityhasaverysuccess-fulstudentbroadcastingstationcalled“Afera”,oneofthethreeofthistypeinPoland.Theradioprogrammeismainlypreparedbyateamofourstudents.Theradioassetsincludeinformationaboutstudying,culturallifeofPoznanandlotsofgoodmusic.“Afera”cooperatesinandpromotesnumerousculturalevents.

TheAcademicSportingUnion,whichhasbeeninexistencesince1919,takesprideinnumerousachievements.Thestu-dentsbelongingtoittaketophonoursinPolishChampionshipsofTechnicalUniver-sities,PolishChampionshipsofSchoolsofHigherEducation,andAcademicCham-pionshipsofWielkopolskaregion.OwingtothisPUTwasawardedsecondplaceintherankingofthemostpro-sportuniversi-tiesinPoland.Intheyears2006–2008,

theBasketballClubofPoznanUniversityofTechnologywasundertheauspicesoftheuniversitybecauseoftheconcernaboutthefutureofPoznanbasketball.Atpresent,theclubplaysintheextraleagueunderthename:PGBBasketPoznan.Untiltoday,abasketballteamofstudentsisverysuc-cessfulinthesecondleaguegames.

Computingscienceplaysaverydistinctiveroleattheuniversity.TheacademicstaffofPUTmadeadistinc-tivecontributiontotheopeningofaSupercomputer-NetworkCentre,whichworkedout,interalia,the“Pioneer”project–realizationofthePolishopti-calinternet,i.e.hightransfercomputernetwork.

Achievementsofscientistsandstu-dentsofcomputersciencearewell-knownthroughouttheworld.TheirknowledgeandcommitmentarehugepotentialofPoznan.

PUTstudentsmakeupmorethan14%ofallstudentsinPoznan,being

asignificantincomecreatorandacitydevelopingfactor.Ourgraduatesbecometheintellectualeliteofthecity.Whatisalsoimportantisthelocationpotentialoftheuniversity.ThelocationofPiotrowoCampus,andtheLecture-ConferenceCentreinparticular,createsopportunitiesforPoznantoenliventheareaattheRiverWartaandintegratethemintoPoznan’sspace-functionalstructure.Itwillbepos-sibletoconnectthisareawiththemainmunicipaltouristroutes.TheLecture-Con-ferenceCentreofPUTisanobjectservingthewholeacademiccommunity.

contributetotheorganizationofPoznanFestivalofScienceandArt.Theyarehelp-fulwithsportandculturalevents.TheNightofScientists,whichhasbeenorgan-izedbyouruniversitysince2007,provedimmenselysuccessful.EachyearthisEu-ropeaneventgathersovertenthousandpeopleatPUT.Theopportunityofbecom-ingacquaintedwiththearcanemysteriesofscientificresearchdescribedinaninter-estingwayisafascinatingexperienceforboththeyoungandtheelder.

PoznanUniversityofTechnologyislocatedinfourpartsofPoznan.TheRector’sofficeandtheHead-quartersoftheuniversityarelocatedinWildaDistrict–at5MariaSkłodowska-CurieSquare.PartofthefacultiesareinStrzeleckaandNieszawskaStreets.Mostfaculties,however,havetheirpremisesontherightbankoftheRiverWarta,atPiotrowoandBerdy-chowoStreets.Academicstaffandstudentshaveac-cesstolaboratories,lecturehalls,studentdormitoriesandsportsgrounds.
