In an effort to streamline the process of scheduling worship leaders – Acolytes, Lectors, Interces-sors, Chalice Bearers, and Ushers – a new form has been developed for parish members who are currently involved in these important and rewarding ministries, as well as any members of the community who would like to get involved in what is, for some, transformational and a spiritually enriching experience.

Turn to page 8 and you will fi nd this new handy dandy Lay Ministry 2011 Update Form that will be used to schedule leadership of our summer services. Please fi ll it in and return it to the Parish Offi ce.

If you have not experienced one of our summer “beach services”, you are in for a real treat. Let us start by explaining that it’s not exactly on the beach, but in a lovely park overlooking the beach. Starting Sunday, June 19 and running through September 4, the service starts at 9:30 am at the Maple Street Park on Sheridan Road in Winnetka. It is just south of the Church On The Hill. Here is a Beach Service Primer that will ensure a great experience:

1) It’s B.Y.O.B. or C.. You should bring your own blanket or chair. 2) Always a good idea to bring bug spray. 3) The shade can be chilly. (We do live near Chicago. You know...colder by the lake.) Bring a sweater or sweatshirt. 4) The dress code is no code. Shorts and a t-shirt are most appropriate. 5) Mrs. Clemmitt & Mrs. Missy provide songs, Bible stories and art for children.

If you happen to attend when a baptism is planned (July 17 and August 21), you have hit the jackpot. At the appropriate time in the service we gather at the shore of Lake Michigan for the Thanksgiving Over The Water and the clergy carry the candidate into the water. Very exciting. Hope you can join us.

You are welcome to join the group when you can as they will be discussing a different mystic each week. Copies of the book have been ordered through the Book Stall in Winnetka. You can stop by and pick up and pay for a copy. If you are interrested or have any questions, please call Jeanne Stewart at 847-446-2850.

We did it! We read the whole Bible! On Sunday mornings throughout this past program year, children, youth and adults followed “The Story” from start to fi nish. We kicked the pro-gram off on Sept 12 with God, Abraham and Sarah, Joseph, Moses and many more beloved Bible characters joining us after the 9:30 service. We met nearly every Sunday to discuss nearly every book of the Bible and the characters joined us once again for a fi nal parish wide celebration on May 22.

Now we look forward to a new program year. In September, we will begin a more focused look at the New Testament. We will follow the Revised Common Lectionary – the 3-year lectionary which assigns our Scripture Readings for Sunday morning services (the Episcopal, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian and Catholic Churches among others follow this lection-ary). On Sunday mornings after the 9:30 service, the children, youth and adults will take a closer look at the morning’s New Testament lessons. The Adults, led by fellow parishioners, will follow Living the Good News, a curriculum produced by Church Publishing. We are excited about this curriculum which incorporates discussion, prayer, art and music into the sessions. The children and youth will also study the New Testament using age appropriate curriculum, including Let the Children Come, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, Godly Play and Feasting on the Word.

We will continue to offer small groups during the week to discuss how we live our faith in relationship to Scripture. Join us in exploring The New Testament in our new program year starting in September!

It could be as simple as buying six gallons of milk or a more involved role in serving a meal to a very grateful and needy group of people - whichever works for you! We provide a meal on the 2nd Tuesday and 4th Saturday of each month, so feel free to complete our sign-up form or just email us with dates/roles you’d like to have. Thank you!

Twenty-three young people from Christ Church joined with others from across the Evanston Deanery to meet with Bishops Jeffrey Lee and Victor Scantlebury in the Chapel at St. David’s Episcopal Church prior to their Confi rmation service on May 21. Bishop Lee engaged the Confi rmands in conversation about baptism, confi rmation and what the two rites mean for those going through them and for the church as a whole. At 11am, the service began, and the Confi rmands, their sponsors, clergy and choir processed into St. David’s Church. Bishop Scantlebury, who will retire at the end of June, was the preacher.

As families and supporters of the young people came forward to join the bishops and spon-sors in the laying on of hands, another successful year of our Confi rmation program came to a close. Many thanks were extended to the Reverend Graham Smith and the fi ne folks of St. David’s, whose hospitality provided both a beautiful liturgy and a wonderful reception. The Confi rmands received their own Books of Common Prayer with book plates signed by Bishop Lee as a remembrance of the occasion.

The 2010-11 program was led by the Curate, Jim Harrison and Elizabeth Clemmitt, coordi-nated by Missy Harrison and received support from the rest of the clergy and many parents and other members of the Christ Church community. Plans are being made and meetings are being held for the 2011-12 classes. Confi rmation is open to rising 8th graders and older members of Christ Church. Interest in, and questions about, Confi rmation should be directed to Jim Harrison at 847-446-2850 or [email protected].

This is the warm up for the Youth Choir trip toCanterbury, England.

Join us. A great way to hear the wonderful music the choir has

been practicing all year.

On July 11, we will meet at 9 am in the McClain Room (note the earlier time!) to discuss Anne Murrow Lindbergh’s classic, “Gift from the Sea.” There is a fi ftieth anniversary edition available, but feel free to bring any edition. Sometimes classifi ed as inspirational literature, the book presages many of the themes in a certain genre of popular literature: simplicity, solitude and caring for the soul. “Gift from the Sea” has sold over 3 million copies and has been translated into 45 languages. July 11 offers a chance for inward focus. Join us.

If you are a bit confused by mulitple opportunities to read with us this summer, it is because for the fi rst time we have TWO book discussion groups. The “Gift from the Sea” is on July 11. “Enduring Grace” is on Thursday mornings. See page 2 for details. Happy reading.

Sharing The Word with Each Other(Becoming a Church School Leader)

Christ Church has spent this year enjoying The Glory Story. This has been a parish-wide event. The youngest and oldest among us have been journeying through the Bible together. This has been a great gift…to share in that journey together. We will continue on that journey in September with a special focus on The New Testament. One way to experience this journey is to volunteer to lead a church school class.

We promise to give you everything you need to be prepared to lead, including class outlines and lesson plans. Classes arenormally lead by a team of teachers, so you are not responsible for preparing the lesson every week…phew. We also promise that you will learn a lot…usually from the very people you are leading. Another benefi t of being a church school leader is the chance to get to know the terrifi c people that are on our Christian Formation team. This is a great group of youth and adults that love to share The Word with others.

Here is our formation schedule: The youngest children (three years old through second grade) meet in their classrooms for music and sacred stories during the Liturgy of the Word. These children then join their parents in church at the Peace and stay forCommunion. Then people of all ages meet for approximately 45 minutes following the 9:30 Eucharist, usually from 10:45 – 11:30. Our high school youth will follow a somewhat different schedule. They will meet on Sunday evenings throughout the year and have opportunities for service projects and fun events at other times. All of our church school programming begins in Septem-ber and concludes in May.

Interested? Want to learn more? Complete this form and place it in the Box marked “Church School Volunteers” in the New Cloister. Contact Missy Harrison, Director of Children and Youth Ministries with any questions at 847-446-2850 or email [email protected].

Our Dear, Dear Friends:

After three weeks of packing, loading, driving, unloading, and unpacking, Bev and I are trying to come up for air long enough to say how much we love and miss you. Where can we possibly begin to thank all of you for our last weekend together? As I said Saturday night at the farewell party, Christ Church is distinguished by its generosity, and the Prevosts have been the benefi ciaries of that generosity in ways too numerous for adequate expression of our gratitude; nonetheless, here goes:

On Saturday night, April 30, the Great Hall was truly transformed: beautiful and beautifully arranged fl owers, new drapes for the mezzanine, welcoming entryway, attractive tables, chairs, and tablecloths, a kitchen cleaned and painted from top to bottom, all spoke to the effective and enthusiastic planning of that event’s committee. The food was simply delicious, much of it gluten free. The “New With Ned” posters were a huge surprise and a bit challenging for us to take in all at once. (They are propped up in our new basement/rec room for more leisurely perusal!) The conversation and Spirit were so supportive, and particularly inclusive of Elizabeth and Mike, Marnie and Matt.

“The Purse”, however, just took our breath away. That so many contributed so much and that we’ll now be able to fully address sooner rather than later the needed work on our new home in Worcester, MA, brought us a joy and sense of relief which will sustain us for years to come.

On Sunday morning the Spirit of celebration and surprise continued. Celebrating the Eucharist for the last time as your Rector was so poignant, and the gifts we then received were thoughtful, touching, and, with one exception, totally unexpected. Richard Clemmitt’s composition of the Benediction came as a complete surprise and was even more so by virtue of the text, which I had also independently chosen and had had printed in the Bulletin for my fi nal blessing (the Sneaky Holy Spirit at work again!). The music was exquisitely beautiful, and we can’t wait to hear the recording of it and of the entire service.

Betsy Fowle’s greeting on behalf of former assisting clergy; the Lost Boys of the Sudan singing a hymn in Dinka; a Magnifi cat/Annunciation Triptych painted by Kristin Koepfgen’s aunt; the book of Church School photos since 1992 presented by Missy Harrison; the album of cards and letters from family, parishioners, and friends, presented by Ginny Packer; a lovely painting of the Rectory with small copies thoughtfully made for our girls were all received with true appreciation. The unveiling of the photographic portrait was not a surprise since I had sat for it downtown, but the cop-ies generously provided for our girls and for us were! Further, the plaque which was presented, naming “The Prevost Cloister” where apparently the portrait will reside, has great meaning for us and for Christ Church because it represents the transition from old to new that the cloister physically and symbolically embodies. What a wonderful honor!

Saturday night and Sunday morning were true celebrations, largely owing to the hard work of the Transition Committee, chaired by Joanne Hudson and Lawson Whitesides; the Wardens, the Staff, and, we understand, over 120 volunteers. Food for the Prevosts and for the movers miraculously appeared the following week. The sensitivity, thoughtfulness, support, and creative energy of all involved in arranging for our farewell was so evident. That kind of love never ends, just like God’s love, just like our love for you.

We would like to share with you the prayer that we said at bedtime every night with our girls, and as a fi nal blessing at their weddings. It seems appropriate here as our prayer for you:

“Watch over thy children, O Lord, as their days increase. Bless and guide them wherever they may be, keeping them unspotted from the world. Strengthen them when they stand; comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall. And in their hearts, may Thy peace, which passeth all understanding, abide all the days of their lives, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”

May God continue to bless and keep you.

All our love, in Christ,

and
