A Message from the President

T. Franklin Fiske

W OW, what a Show! Every year, we truly doubt that the beast we have produced with a week to go will be good. And every year, it somehow gels at the last possible mo-ment. This year was no exception. I believe the key to

that turnaround this year was the Thursday night rehearsal at Grace Church the night after the Pickersgill Show. Our cast WANTED to rehearse and WANTED to get it right…. and they did.

I feel extremely fortunate to have such a hard-working, capable group with which to work for the many tasks this club requires. I did not do the lion’s share of the work this year… you did. Yes, I assigned the duties, but our membership stepped up and gave me a fine year as your President.

All my events throughout the year were enjoyable and successful. The Chairs of these events knew what they were doing. Our membership will, in all likelihood, increase by 6 or 7 by the time our next President takes over. This is a good thing. We will be awarding well over $30,000 to our Charities from our Show proceeds. This is a good thing.

So, I guess I’m saying that the state of the club is good. We will keep doing this. That is definitely a good thing. By the way, I decided not to do my thank yous to all the members who helped me through-out the year in this newsletter. I will do that at the annual meeting. Hey, we’re serving mint juleps (like the old days) and the first one’s on me! I hope to see most of there.

Have another,

Frank Fiske

ALMONER’S REPORT

Trisha Webster

We don't often have an opportunity to celebrate organ

transplantation, but Jerry Chiat celebrated his kidney

transplant of four years on May 24th. This means that

Eileen as a kidney donor celebrated her gift of life too.

Ken and Mary Ellen Groner are both having health issues now.

Marge Pearce continues her battle. It was great seeing her at the

President’s Ball and at the show!

Doris Rocklin, Art Rocklin's wife passed away May 3, 2016. Services were

held May 5, 2016 at Sol Levinson's. We send our heartfelt condolences to Art

and his family.

Harriet Waldman, Jerry Chiat’s sister, passed away 5-24-16 from renal

disease at the age of 79. She lived in California. The Paint & Powder Club

extends our condolences to Jerry and Eileen.

The Scholarship Award...

THE CHRIS BARRY HERGENROEDER PERFORMING

ARTS SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

By John Hergenroeder

A mber Parks and Taylor Rieland were the two outstanding Paint

and Powder, Chris Barry Hergenroeder Performing Arts

Scholarship Award applicants for this years show. This is the

second year for the award.

Amber is 17 years old and a dance major at The George Washington Carver Center for Arts

and Technology in Towson. She will be graduating this coming June. Amber plans to attend

community college and continue her studies in acting and dance. She started her training when

she was 4 years old and has performed in many studio competitions, workshops and produc-

tions at school.

Taylor is 21 years old and studied voice, acting and dance at Towson University. He will receive

a BFA degree this month and will to be joining the Signature Theater Company in Arlington VA

after graduation. Taylor has received recognition twice as a finalists and semi finalist in the Ken-

nedy Center American College Theater Festival Region 2 . He plays a variety of instruments,

speaks Spanish and is fluent in a number of accents and dialects. He has performed in numerous

shows and productions at Towson University.

The Paint and Powder Club awarded Amber a $1,000 scholarship for Dance and Taylor was

awarded a $1,000 scholarship for voice. Both applicants were featured in many of the numbers

in the show and put their talent on full display for all to see.

Amber and Taylor gave this years show a special spark and confidence that P&P will be able to

attract young talented performers to the shows and perhaps as members to the Club. I have

heard nothing but favorable comments and enthusiasm from both the cast and from the audi-

ence about their talent and performance. They mixed well with the cast and they really enjoyed

being part of the Paint & Powder's Annual show.

Amber and Taylor have agreed to help us find scholarship applicants for next years show and

time permitting may be able to be in the show in 2017. Taylor Rieland, John Hergenroeder and Amber Parks

...and even more about the scholarship award

By Maxine Stitzer

O ur scholarship program was mutually beneficial and the two talented scholarship students were full of praise for their Paint

and Powder experience. Amber enjoyed being "adopted" by the dance group, the chance to help teach as well as per-

form the dances and the opportunity to know the P & P dancers who told her their life stories and the role that dance plays

in their lives. Taylor thought his time was well spent and likened the experience to attending a Master Class where he could

draw on the talents and techniques of experienced performers. But it was more fun than a Master Class because he could also practice

what he was learning and bring his enthusiasm to the stage. He appreciated the light hearted approach that P & P brings to it's produc-

tions and the warmth and praise he experienced from P & P members. Taylor was able to solidify some of his thoughts about the value of

being open to experience and incorporate these into the commencement speech he was writing during our rehearsals. What lovely

young people we found!

a message from Rod...

C ast, Crew and Others,

On the final night of the show,

I said that Sunday would be our

best performance because there

would be no missed cues or mistakes on

stage. I was wrong! You all gave a near per-

fect performance on Saturday. From

my perspective, the show was almost per-

fection. Congratulations to the cast for their

hard work since March 14 when we met at

Pickersgill and I gave you your music and list

of routines that you would be rehearsing

and learning for the show.

I hope that this experience was an enjoyable

and rewarding one for everyone. You should

be very proud of the product we presented

to over 500 people last week. You should

also be proud that you contributed to the

ongoing support of the two organizations

who will benefit from your efforts.

It was a kick for me when you all got the routines down and I heard the adulations and applause from the audiences on Thursday,

Friday and Saturday. It was a pleasure to see my ideas, visions, and routines appear on stage just as I had imagined that they would.

Thank you for your patience, efforts and perseverance to give the best performance you could for Paint and Powder.

Have Another!
