GO 386: ENTERTAINMENT 4E Friday, January 1, 2010 The Daytona Beach News-Journal Ten To Watch in 2010 H appy New Year, my devoted Fanboy readers. 2009 was a great year in pop culture and 2010 is aiming to keep the ball rolling. With that in mind, I thought I’d give you guys a little heads up on the year to come. Here’s 10 folks to watch for in 2010: 10. Jerry Seinfeld: After returning to TV in 2009 on HBO’s ‘‘Curb Your Enthusiasm,’’ the comedy legend will return to NBC this fall with ‘‘The Marriage Ref.’’ Yes, it’s reality TV, but ‘‘Ref’’ sounds promising. A panel of comedians weighs in on battles between normal couples. ‘‘After nine years of marriage, I have discovered that the comedic potential of this subject is quite rich,’’ said Seinfeld. 9. Bob Costas: It’s an even- numbered year which means it’s time for the Olympics, winter this time. And the two biggest stars of the season for NBC will be the city of Vancouver and Bob Costas, who seems to shine during every Olympiad. 8. Cast of ‘‘The Expendables’’: On Aug. 20, Sylvester Stallone will star in ‘‘The Expendables,’’ a film he is also directing and co- wrote. The movie about a team of mercenaries headed to South America to overthrow a dictator could have one of the greatest action casts of all time. Here’s a sampling: Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, UFC star Randy Couture, the WWE’s Steve Austin, ‘‘Dexter’s’’ David Zayas, Mickey Rourke, Danny Trejo, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Wow. 7. Steve Carell: Comedic superstar Carell will not only continue his role on NBC’s ‘‘The Office,’’ he’ll star in three films this year: as a bored husband to Tina Fey in April’s ‘‘Date Night,’’ as the voice of an evil genius in July’s animated ‘‘Despicable Me’’ and as a guest in July’s comedic ensemble film, ‘‘Dinner for Schmucks.’’ 6. Jackie Earle Haley: Haley has been acting since 1972 and was most remembered from his days with ‘‘The Bad News Bears.’’ That is until ‘‘Watchmen’’ was released in 2009. That role will pay off in 2010 with four starring roles including a turn as horror icon Freddy Krueger in April’s reboot of the ‘‘Nightmare on Elm Street’’ series. 5. Michael Emerson: February will bring a close to ABC’s uber-hit ‘‘Lost’’ and Emerson, who plays baddie Benjamin Linus, expects to play a major part in it. 4. Liam Neeson: It’s hard to top playing the god Zeus in a March remake of ‘‘Clash of the Titans’’ but Neeson sure will try as Col. ‘‘Hannibal’’ Smith in June’s ‘‘A- Team.’’ I love it when a plan comes together. 3. Mia Wasikowska: Viewers of HBO’s ‘‘In Treatment’’ may know Wasikowska as the troubled Sophie, but for the rest of us, the 20-year-old actress will soon be known as Alice in director Tim Burton’s take on ‘‘Alice in Wonderland.’’ 2. Cast of ‘‘Kick-Ass’’: Based on the popular comic book series, ‘‘Kick-Ass’’ has been building more buzz in fanboy circles than any film in recent memory. Nicolas Cage, Mark Strong and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (‘‘Superbad’s’’ McLovin) join virtual unknowns Aaron Johnson and Chloe Moretz in this tale about ‘‘an unnoticed high school student who decides to become a superhero even though he has no powers, training or meaningful reason to do so.’’ 1. Jay Baruchel: A couple of years ago, writer/director/producer Judd Apatow decided to take someone he enjoyed working with from his days in TV and make him huge. Now, Seth Rogen is a megastar. This year, another Apatow protege is in line for a push. He’ll start things slow in March with ‘‘She’s Out of My League’’ but will turn up the heat as the lead voice in the animated ‘‘How To Train Your Dragon.’’ But Baruchel’s breakthrough performance will come in July when he co-stars with Nicolas Cage in the live action Disney film, ‘‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.’’ [email protected] Accent writer Tom Iacuzio scours the pop culture uni- verse for the latest in enter- tainment news. Fanboy can be found online as Fanboy 2.0 at go386.com/fanboy Tom Iacuzio FANBOY COSTAS Karen Ballard Among the people Fanboy is keeping an eye on for the upcoming year: Sylvester Stallone who headlines an impressive-sounding action-film cast in ‘‘The Expendables,’’ which he directed and co-wrote. What are your chances, and which card in the closed hand is the key? North has an awkward response on the first round. A two-club bid is likely to lose the heart suit and to respond two hearts on such a shabby suit is unthinkable. Since the void in partner’s suit is a liability, North compromised by bidding one no trump. That worked well and the excellent heart game was reached in quick time. If trumps are 2-1, the contract is cold. South’s key card is the eight of clubs. That guarantees no more than two club losers no matter how the suit breaks. Declarer ruffed the second diamond and cashed the ace of hearts. When both defenders followed, declarer drew the remaining fang, then ran the eight of clubs, losing to East’s jack. The diamond return was ruffed, dummy was entered by trumping a spade and the ace of clubs was cashed. Next a club was led for a ruffing finesse. Had it lost, that would have been the third and last trick for the defense. But when East turned up with the king of clubs, the contract is home with an overtrick. Should you adopt the same line at duplicate? There are some possibilities for 12 tricks if the ace of spades is guarded no more than twice. But that entails some risk to the contract, so we think you should play it the same way as at rubber bridge, putting the contract above overtricks.
