Pastor Bill Bryan, Narrator:Greetings. We are from Abingdon Baptist Church. Welcome to our Community Christmas Carol Sing-Long -- a Park, Porch, and Sidewalk Sing, a project of singers across the country to “fill the night with music and light!”

This year has been a difficult one in so many ways. As the classic Advent hymn says, “O come, Thou Dayspring, come and cheer, our spirits by Thine advent here.” We hope our music and light in this nighttime of our lives will cheer your spirits and will be part of binding ”all people in one heart and mind.”

Sing “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”

Narrator: The beloved song “O Come, All Ye Faithful” invites us to come to Bethlehem and behold the Christ child. But in this time of pandemic, we will remind you in the midst of this song that it isn’t advisable to come and behold… too close!

Sing “O Come, All Ye Faithful” AND “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear”

Narrator: In the classic carol “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” it is the hamlet of Bethlehem that is small. But in this next carol, we sing about a tiny thing that has changed so many lives this year–a virus. In this carol, we thank all those people who have put their lives on the line to bring relief and help, and we remember that every little tiny thing we can do to help someone’s suffering is really a big contribution to our communities.

Narrator: As a expression of gratitude to our front-line healthcare workers - here in Abingdon and around the nation -

Let's blow our horns and flash our headlights.

Now let's sing the classic carol we know and love:

“O Little Town of Bethlehem,”.

Narrator: The next song has a birthday this year! “This Little Light of Mine” is 100 years old! That’s one hundred years of encouraging us to let our light shine, especially in the midst of hard times. This song was a powerful witness during the Civil Rights Era and we would like you to join us tonight as we “fill this night with music and light” and commit to continue the work to make the world a better place. You can do this most safely by singing with sign language .

Sing “This Little Light of Mine” AND “Go Tell It on the Mountain”

Narrator: One of the most beloved moments of Christmas Eve is when we gather together, light our candles, and sing “Silent Night.” We will not be able to pack our churches and sing safely together this year so we want to give you that opportunity right now to be surrounded by light and love and remember that “calm and bright” is the way that this world is meant to be. Let us do all we can to offer this to a hurting and weary world. Let this be our prayer.

Sing “Silent Night” AND “Joy to the World”
