    Barrie was born in Kirriemuir,

    Angus, to a conservative Calvinistfamily. His father David Barrie wasa modestly successful weaver. He wasa small child (he only grew to 5 ft.312 in. and drew attention to himselfwith storytelling.

    The character of Peter Pan wasinvented to entertain George and Jack.Barrie would say, to amuse them, thattheir little brother Peter could fly. Heclaimed that babies were birds beforethey were born; parents put bars on

    nursery windows to keep the little onesfrom flying away. This grew into a taleof a baby boy who did fly away.

    adventure debuted on 27 December1904, in the stage play Peter Pan,or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up.The play was adapted andexpanded somewhat as a novel,

    published in 1911 as Peter and

    Wendy (later as Peter Pan andWendy, and still later as PeterPan).

    Barrie never described Peter'sappearance in detail, even in the

    novel Peter and Wendy (1911),leaving much of it to theimagination of the reader and theinterpretation of anyone adaptingthe character.
